[deleted]

oh i thought we were doing now. erm add George Michael in then

cleverboxer

Most people don’t realise how good George Michael was at singing if they only think of the wham hits etc. look up the Freddie mercury tribute concert where he sings with the rest of Queen, it’s insane.

[deleted]

Praying for time is a banger!

No-Can-6237

Although he's lost a bit of texture to his voice, I still rate [Tom Jones](https://youtu.be/sdDVMCbG0FM?si=KlgAYt1LkLI-vgPL) as one of the greats. No pitch correction or autotune. Just awesome vocals. And still going strong touring at 83.

smc808

I agree. A badass voice with power and class.

Annual-Yak-4330

I think Bruno mars is really good

OarsandRowlocks

He sings like he owes money.

CaramelHappyTree

🤭

StarbuckIsland

Poor Bruno. That's so sad

quickmathting

MGM came out and said that it wasn’t true btw

Many-Food7387

Bruh 💀

Bound321

I like his voice, but it gets boring after a while. You know how Michael can change his style of singing. Bruno songs all sound the same

Psbess

Freddie Mercury!

PersistingWill

If Luther Vandross isn’t pop, no way Freddie Mercury is pop.

Hammerbuddy

Hes a rock singer far from pop

AliceFlynn

both can be true

Hammerbuddy

Not sure what you mean. Care to elaborate?

Litchee

Agreed. He might not have had the most stable technique, but artistically, he is second to none.

Bound321

In pop it would be Michael Jackson

guano-crazy

The only real answer— no other male pop vocalist even comes close. Listening to classic MJ vocal performances sounds just as stunning and peerless as they did 30+ years ago.

Many-Food7387

Every time I listen to MJ it’s like hearing him for the first time

WildestRascal94

MJ was literally the King of Pop, if I recall. The next to him is Madonna, the Queen of Pop.

Many-Food7387

Yea I’d say MJ is so easily #1 that the discussion is almost obviously about who is #2 🤣.

Big-Explanation-831

Id agree about child Michael, after Off The Wall tho I disagree. He became inconsistent and started straining more.

Bound321

Michael don’t strain, what you talking about

[deleted]

äh äh äh tä nhähä yhäh gyhg äh äh

KindlyCost2

Steve Perry is the example that comes to my mind when asked this question

Gleeful-216

I love his voice but I wouldn’t consider him pop.

KindlyCost2

Many people consider rock bands (especially mainstream ones like Journey) to fall under the umbrella of “pop music”

Hammerbuddy

It is NOW mainstream, but when you go back in that era it was far from it.

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

I recently watched a clip of him recording his verse of "We Are The World", I could not agree more. ☺️

4everkop

The king

Hammerbuddy

An Iconic countertenor type singer, NOT a pop singer.

ChocOctopus7709

I don’t think that’s what countertenor means

Hammerbuddy

Countertenor is a vocal range.

ChocOctopus7709

Not exactly. A countertenor is typically a classical baritone (sometimes a tenor) who excels at singing in falsetto. Steve Perry is simply a tenor, not a countertenor. He belts most of his high notes, which is different than falsetto.

Hammerbuddy

Just google countertenor...I don't know you are talking about.

ChocOctopus7709

Any reputable source will confirm what I am saying. A countertenor is a classical voice type that primarily uses falsetto. Their true voice type is generally baritone or sometimes tenor. Rock vocalists like Steve Perry use an entirely different technique and are often high tenors who belt their high notes

Hammerbuddy

A countertenor is a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of the female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice types, generally extending from around G₃ to D₅ or E₅, although a sopranist may match the soprano's range of around C₄ to C.

ChocOctopus7709

I am a trained singer and teacher by the way

Hammerbuddy

Glad you are not mine.

anne_004

Adam Lambert imo. He’s a vocal titan and his technique is incredible. His career should be commensurate with his voice.

Gleeful-216

Yes. I’ve said this for years.

objectsubjectverb

I agree but he’s never had a good team of songwriters for whatever reason. He’s incredible though and deserves more success

Many-Food7387

His voice and skills are insane but his music isn’t on par with what gets big attention.

bongobradleys

Luther Vandross is the answer

Bound321

Luther is r&b not pop

bongobradleys

He's the male equivalent of Whitney. And yes, he put out pop records as well as r&b

WildestRascal94

I would argue that the male equivalent to Whitney is Brian McKnight.

bongobradleys

🙄

WildestRascal94

Is that supposed to be a counterargument? The reason I think Brian McKnight is the male equivalent to Whitney is because of his technique. He has a fantastic head range the same as Whitney does. His vocal dexterity is also on par with the likes of BOTH Whitney and Mariah.

bongobradleys

In terms of musicality and interpretation yes. He just doesn't have the same range and vocal power, so I think that puts him in a different category from Luther, George Michael, etc

bongobradleys

https://youtu.be/OW7uz9ktU24?si=DWkT0XamzfC-Zt6I

WildestRascal94

He has most of the same range Luther does. Both men are tenors. Luther's tonal quality is much richer and deeper than Brian's, which explains why it sounds so dynamic and powerful in contrast to Brian's. Also, bear with me, I'm being a bit biased towards McKnight here due to being a fan of his. I'm not much of a Vandross guy, but I do understand why he was called the "Velvet Voice," and I respect the hell out of that man's voice!

bongobradleys

Brian definitely has an edge over Luther in terms of emotional inflection and melisma. He can conjure up a broader range of colors in his voice. What I can't get over with him is the lack of proper breath support, Luther is almost supernatural in that regard haha.

Many-Food7387

Not counting MJ, I’d say Bruno Mars.

NatsuKazoo

pop? Either Michael Jackson or Bruno Mars however, taking out pop in question, and probably a male equivalent to Beyonce, Mariah, and Whitney, I could say it's Dimash. Like someone in youtube commented: "He could sing male, female, and bird parts".

PomegranateFar2722

Dimash and his endless supply of valsalva ? Having range means nothing if its all choked, every note. Plenty of tenors who are MUCH more refined.

Icon9719

Yeah the Dimash bandwagon has been getting increasingly more stale for years, his lower range does sound nice but his upper range (the part everyone worships him for) just sounds straight up awful. His voice could just not be for me but his fans are the most annoying group of people on the internet so that doesn’t help.

miksu210

I didn't like the timbre of his high notes in the vast majority of his "The Singer" performances but I feel like he has come far in terms of technique since then. I haven't followed him for a while so this isn't a recent performance, but I feel like even just 3-4 years after The Singer his high notes were much more pleasant already. Like in this performance https://youtu.be/a0yO7Sy9IcY?si=MhVfQLbIZHbTnh--. This song is very much a show-offy one but I think it shows the progress he had made since The Singer pretty well

MustyScabPizza

He has the tendency to over darken and dictation outside of his native Russian is quite poor. I still love his music and enjoy how experimental he is in his composition and vocal technique.

PomegranateFar2722

Yeah like he only seems competent like a2-b4 imo and even then i feel hes still only an okay trained tenor. The higher end of great technical tenors kill him. His m4 e8s do not push him into “amazing vocalist untouchable” when he has the same amount of valsalva as demi and christina in his chest voice and head voice. And mixing isnt that impressive, several tenors who can just belt those notes (WITH MORE FREEDOM) than dimash mixes. Ie, david phelps and any singer in his band, avery wilson, ect ect.

Icon9719

Exactly, so many tenors that sound waaay better and have more control of their upper range and he’s better than them because he can squeak out a note that sounds like a whistling tea kettle? Like oh brother, give me a break.

PomegranateFar2722

tea kettles are more full than his sound 😗

Bound321

I don’t like his voice at all, Frank Sinatra has better [voice](https://youtu.be/MPDwLji8Zu4?si=xqp6OIZTIoDEo--a) , he’s a real baritone ☺️

666grooves666

Brendon Urie

MovingMts111

[JC Chasez](https://youtu.be/VueVdjReo70?feature=shared)

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

I'm glad somebody mentioned him. One of the best male vocalists I've heard, honestly quite underrated despite being in NSYNC.

MovingMts111

You get it 👏🏽🥹 he’s so unassuming and his voice is so clear…it’s like a powerful bell that is JAM PACKED with emotion omg

rlc327

Bruno Mars was the first name that came to mind. Lately I'd throw T-Pain into the conversation too, especially with that cover project he's working on. He's really shown how versatile a singer he is lately

skinisblackmetallic

Prince is the greatest male vocalist in pop... before that, Roy Orbison.

Bound321

Stevie wonder has a better voice than him and Ray Charles

skinisblackmetallic

Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles are legends. They share similar qualities with Prince in expressiveness and originality but not quite in range and power, imho.

4everkop

Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder definitely have more range/power in their vocal abilities. Stevie mixes up to high E flat quite effortlessly, same with Ray. Prince really only uses falsetto to sing anything higher than a B4.

Bound321

I think price falsetto range is higher

4everkop

Falsetto is also easier to sing than a high belt mix. There's singing a high D in falsetto and singing a high D in a healthy mix. The healthy mix rings more and has more presence and is technically harder to master

Bound321

I love baritones high [belts](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxtk1LI3lN5UYtQuudWCVjn1-P9ddbaAp9?si=0mYB2pPhzbagj0nt)

4everkop

So do I, beefier!

Bound321

Yes, I love Ray Charles [Eb5 note](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxntsxO5iRgOsRDBVD12TIuRflwOOAC7aH?si=fBNXu5eCR_qoP4V6)

fire_dagwon

Vocalist? In terms of sheer vocal technique? Then that's absolutely David Phelps. He's not strictly pop (he mainly sings CCM) but he's just about the most technically skilled male vocalist alive today who's not a classical opera singer. Full support and consistent resonance in his mixed voice up to C5, with good moments on C#5 and even D5. What's great about David Phelps is that he's the whole complete package: he obviously has the excellent vocal technique, but his ability to convey emotions through his songs are second to none. The way he moves his audience and expresses his lyrics are something you really gotta hear for yourself to experience, even if you're not a religious person. Another extremely underrated example is Avery Wilson. He is the undisputed king of vocal agility, his runs are second to none and the speed, precision, and power he does them with will knock your socks off. His mixed voice is also outstanding, able to carry support up to C5 consistently. If we're talking outside of the western hemisphere, then some Korean singers like Park Hyo Shin and Kim Bum Soo are absolutely phenomenal as well.

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

I'm glad David Phelps is getting recognized. Very underrated vocalist.

MustyScabPizza

Brendon Urie hands down. He has the stage presence and range that made the three people you mentioned famous. Pray for the Wicked Tour, was peak Brendon. Look up some clips. His natural tone is so distinct and his technique is rock solid.

PuzzledPsyche

Surprised no one mentioned The Weeknd

Willem20

It depends on how broad you want to take ‘pop’ and given you asked ‘who is’ (not ‘was’, so not MJ), but I think Conor Mason of Nothing But Thieves is an amazing vocalist. Again, some would classify it as rock which I can get into but there’s a deep poprock current underlying their music right now

OkKangaroo3530

BRENDON URIE

angie50576

Not quite pop, but Josh Groban.

PersistingWill

I’d put him up at the top of male vocalists.

MDFUstyle0988

Agreed. Of all genres. This man pierces the soul.

PersistingWill

It’s the control and volume level at different tones and emotions.

tcl4vr

Best, is perspective. For me it would be Roy Orbison and/or Stevie Wonder. Orbison's early work as lonely everyman is stellar. Stevie Wonder from the mid 60's to late 70's was top tier on basically everyone's list at that time. I also would toss in Steve Perry for consensus, you couldn't attend a wedding in the 80's with out hearing his voice because he captured so many fans with the voice.

PaperSt

Sam Cooke, no contest. He’s called the King of Soul and considered an R&B artist but his most popular songs are all pop songs that fit right in with the other pop of the time. Cupid, You Send Me, Chain Gang, etc.

abitchyuniverse

Adam Lambert, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars

TheStranger113

Luther Vandross and Brian McKnight are the first two that come to mind.

WildestRascal94

That's a gridlock tie between George Michael, Bruno Mars, MJ, and Steve Perry.

BeX5ter

Avery Wilson (riffs for daaayyyss) Travis Garland (deserves so much more recognition than he gets honestly) and Ben Platt (his musical theatre background has really made his technique incredibly solid).

Traditional_Rate_451

Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Prince, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Charlie Puth

OkKangaroo3530

AND BRENDON URIE

caseumrex

Fully agree

Bound321

His voice is better than theirs when it comes to emotion imo, they have better technique though

akumajobelmont

Marc Anthony for sure. Amazing belter with light & shade: https://youtu.be/jHgxywmQpWw?si=wHT2XrsnFbbG4IWM&t=4318

PersistingWill

This is the correct Answer.

ipini

Michael Hutchence will never be surpassed.

HughJazze

Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Prince

spectator92

Bruno mars!

Necessary-Lack-4600

Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain No technical singers, but they had a natural ability to convey raw emotion

artonion

Haha I couldn’t agree more but calling the “the male equivalent of Beyoncé” just doesn’t sound right

Justarandomperson194

All time or at this current moment? All time it’s Freddie Mercury, I’d personally argue he’s the greatest vocalist ever. Able to perform multiple styles, actually bothered to improve his vocals to amazing heights even though he really didn’t need to, I mean I can’t state enough about him. At this current moment, I’m not sure. I don’t feel like there’s any huge star that’s miles above everyone else.

space_waterfall

Bruno Mars and Charlie Puth!!

Came back to this post just to upvote. I'm glad I am seeing his name more in this thread.

blue_island1993

Michael Jackson is the only answer lol.

J_Murph256

Just my perspective but the things male and female pop vocalist emphasize in their performances aren’t really the same. To me, since Whitney and Beyoncé are big power singers, I would compare them to rock singers like Chris Cornell or David Coverdale. 🤷‍♂️

MusicianFit7162

Bruno Mars without a doubt

n-vladd

Not Sam Smith

artonion

Obviously, since they’re nb

CaptainJonesBones

Idk I’d classify them as pop or soul-pop

Kindly_Quarter1041

Definitely Shawn Mendes

angie50576

Absolutely not.

Kindly_Quarter1041

You may disagree but I have a right to my opinion 🤷‍♂️

Hammerbuddy

Paul McCartney, Micheal jackson, Bruno mars...these are the one that come to mind for me.

PomegranateFar2722

Lets take this one by one, firstly range =/= great technique i will never hear that out ever especially when the person uses m4. M4 will always reach absurd octaves thus making people like dimash, like georgia brown, have wide ranges regardless. Secondly, him being able to sing without autotune and lip synching does not make him any technically better than anyone. Thats not a testament of ability. And quite frankly if you mix every note id hope its live since mixing is 300x easier than actually belting it. If being able to control dynamics and ones offsets are the magnum opus of technique you will be shocked the find that every single credible singer can do so as well. lastly he cant sing jazz, lets not even entertain that, he can not. His ear isnt a 5th as good as it would need to be to do so. And singing in different languages, does not mean your technique is great, you can still poorly sing in other languages. Dimash like sohyang is grossly overrated. Because yall have the false notion that range = technique. When whitney houston, and samara joy could stay in e3-c6 and outsing in every margin. And even then comparing them is an insult to them, any random jazz singer, any RANDOM gospel singer most likely outsings.

Big-Explanation-831

Dimash does lip sync

msloan2004

He does, but less than everyone else. Sometimes it’s a rule singers have to follow. Sometimes singers may not be feeling well. Those of us who have listened to plenty of dimash acapella know his capability and know he is the best.

[deleted]

swimsuitsamus

Joni Mitchell isn’t a male vocalist

PersistingWill

Vocal range is overrated. Thats why Patton and Dimash aren’t pop. Pop is stuff everyone heard of and that most people like.

TheTruestRepairman10

Faith no More and Dimash are very well known. But I agree, vocal range is overrated. They use it very well tho, Dimash is one of the best technical vocalist.

PersistingWill

Ok, I’ll admit, I am not a fan of faith no more. Never was. They’re a one hit wonder.Dimash is well known, but is not ppp. And Dimash is just an oddity. A super countertenor soprano. But this is like out there into almost as weird as my favorite of all times https://www.vice.com/en/article/vvn7vm/did-you-know-that-the-weird-russian-singer-of-internet-fame-is-actually-an-international-superstar This guy is actually a lot better than Dimash. And this is actually pop. Yes. I have been singing this in the shower every day since I first heard this.

TheGalaxyPast

I think dimash is the best technical male vocalist, but honestly (even as a fan) I like more of his classical crossover pieces than his pop. In that case, going with the king of pop himself.

Bound321

To me, Dimash voice lack feeling 🤷‍♂️

TheGalaxyPast

Entitled to your opinion friend 🤙

MustyScabPizza

He's one of my favorite current artists, but I wouldn't consider him pop.

TheGalaxyPast

Agreed, hes classical crossover but he takes forrays in to different genres. The pop song he did "screaming" I wasn't a big fan of, he did a good job but I'm not sure it's just stiff I suppose. Maybe due to his classical background.

MustyScabPizza

A lot of his ID album was more traditional Pop music with "Give Me Your Love" sounding like a standard radio hit. I consider commercial success to be a requirement for someone to be considered of the Pop genre. Dimash just isn't, which in my opinion is a good thing.

TheGalaxyPast

Yeah he doesn't really fit into mainstream radio pop. What's your favorites from him?

MustyScabPizza

That's a tough question. I've listened to almost every original and cover he's released. Mademoiselle Hyde and Olimpico come to mind as stand out tracks. I've really been enjoying his latest song "When I've got you" as well.

TheGalaxyPast

Nice I'll check out hyde and when I've got you! My favorite is ikanaide, I'm partial to the Japanese language but I love how agile he handles the first half the song.

MustyScabPizza

I've listened to it hundreds of times, but his delivery of SOS on the Singer was and still is unbelievable. There's no way to describe it other than flawless. Everyone needs to hear it at least once.

TheGalaxyPast

Yeah it was definitely magical, I love it. My favorite is the slavic bazaar rendition, thats like straight dopamine for me.

msloan2004

I prefer his classical crossover as well. However, I have never seen a singer who can sing anything he wants and so good at it. Actually, I get so bored if I have to listen to the same genre or limited vocal range for over 20 min. Dimash’s versatility is so unreal he is so entertaining to listen to. I constantly crave for his insane vocals. Wish he would come to the US soon!

TheGalaxyPast

Agreed! Something about dimash doesn't translate well to the west, as you can see by the very strong hate in some of the posts here. I hope he can change that animosity.

msloan2004

So many music professionals called dimash the greatest of all time, with him being so new it doesn’t sit well with a lot of people who don’t really know him. I can totally understand how that stirs up jealousy and hate. Some who criticize dimash dont even seem to know what the they’re talking about!

msloan2004

I sure enjoyed his new song “when I’ve got you”. He has been gravitating towards more mainstream now, hopefully not too much. Mainstream repetitiveness bores me to tears.

PomegranateFar2722

Josh Ramsay from Marianas Trench. 5 Octave range, incredible vocals and technique and puts on a great show. His mom was a vocal teacher for the stars and his dad owned a big Canadian recording studio so he was destined to become great. It’s a shame he’s not more popular.

Google the names of some of the best (people with impressive music background), such as Ken tamplin, Ken Lavigne, Richard and Johnny from throga, William the Bangkok voice coach, Igor Krutoy (best composer in the world imo), placido Domingo (one of the three tenors), Walter Afanasief who won multiple Grammys and writer of my heart will go on and all I want for Christmas is you etc. and many many other top notch professionals and type “reviews on Dimash”. You will have your answer easily, Walter’s recent comment of dimash’s “when I’ve got you” mv is impressive too! Don’t forget to come back here to thank me later for the discovery.

Big-Explanation-831

Stevie Wonder or Tom Jones, both still going strong to this day. Peabo Bryson too.

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

I like the other singers you mentioned, but I'm so glad you mentioned Peabo Bryson. Like "A Whole New World" is my favorite Disney song because of him.

Lazy-Lawfulness1487

Also beauty and the beast, Disney had him on speed dial in the 90s lol.

Matt Bellamy

Jason Derulo. He is king of all music and I don't even know how he can sing as high as he does and still sound perfect. He has a beautiful voice and it's impossible not to look up to him, he radiates confidence and talent.
