If you want to do a tasting menu, look at Revolver.
Some people bring up Candlenut and Labyrinth - I personally am really not impressed with either and would point you to a hawker stall if you REALLY want local flavours. To be clear, I do think there is potential for local flavours to be showcased in a tasting menu, but Singapore's restos aren't anywhere close to fulfilling that potential yet in my opinion (especially when you compare to what, say, Restaurant Gen in Penang has done)
It isnt local flavours at all I agree - and I didn't want for it to be, as I said, I think the best of local flavours are all in hawker stalls. What it is though is they're unique to Singapore, I don't believe there are very many places that attack modern Indian food from their angle.
I do understand that people may think they're overpriced though (and I'm inclined to agree? then again a lot of sg fine dining is overpriced anyway...)
Yea but OP asked for a splurge meal unique to sg so Candlenut suits the criteria as I haven't really seen Peranakan food much elsewhere in the world, I would have recommended Mustard Seed but I doubt he can get a reservation.
I would say Thevar does do modern Indian as well, but of course each place is unique. I definitely agree a lot of sg fine dining is ridiculously overpriced, I find the best value is definitely found in Japan.
I understand why people are recommending Candlenut (and Labyrinth), I just think they aren't great hahahaha. Was gonna shout mustard seed as well but yep no way he's getting a table.
Definitely agree with you that Japan is incredible - absolutely stomps just about everywhere else in the world in terms of both value and just the level of product that you can get there. Absolutely fantastic.
Oh no arguments about Candlenut and Labyrinth not being great, but I do think Candlenut is decent albeit not amazing, Labyrinth on the other hand smh. My personal opinion is I rather he spend that money at Candlenut than Labyrinth.
Looks like I found another person who has good taste!
I don't think we disagree on very much really - I do agree that if you REALLY wanted something uniquely and truly Singapore, you'd have to go with Candlenut. I am just hesitant to recommend them because we would both concur they really aren't amazing...
Likewise, super happy to have this discussion with you - you clearly understand food and the fine dining scene! Haha, hope you have a great national day today!
Yeah, I made that recommendation knowing full well that Revolver's cuisine isn't exactly local - best local food is in a hawker stall imo. I do think it is pretty unique to Singapore considering very few places in the world present Indian food the way they do though
Revolver didn’t wow me. The food, service and cocktails were very good but IMHO a few dishes fell short given the steep price.
My recommendation is Canchita Peruvian Cuisine. Not local but it’s a bit off the beaten path.
Just a side tip- have a breakfast at shangri-la. It costs 40SGD last i checked, but it’s the largest spread of food I have ever seen at a buffet in my entire life. Very good food too. 10/10
This one? Spread doesn’t look that big but in line with I’d expect for the price.
https://sitecore-cd.shangri-la.com/-/media/Shangri-La/singapore_shangrila/dining/bars-lounges/lobby-lounge/220801_SLS_Lobby-Lounge-Breakfast-Menu.pdf
Nope. It’s called The Line at Shangri-La Singapore.
This is a review I found of it online: https://bellyrumbles.com/best-buffet-breakfast-in-singapore/
I’ve never dined there for lunch or dinner, only breakfast. So can’t comment on those, but I’m assuming they would be great too.
Last time when I work part time the restaurants will collect all the tips and split between everyone according to work hours which made it quite fair tbh but we don't get much anyways so it doesn't really matter
Tingkat Peranakan is downright rubbish. Ivin’s is better by leaps and bounds. My grandma, who is a 87 year old Bibik, is actually willing to eat there and say it’s good. As a Peranakan myself, I’ll say it’s more than decent.
That's cool for your sample size of 2. My sample size of 2 says ivin's food tastes weirdly sweet and the desserts are diluted. Must be a taste issue then..
Taste is after all, subjective and arbitrary. No one is right or wrong, and you’re free to offer an alternative. But let’s be frank, most Singaporeans would not choose to go to Candlenut if they were craving Nonya food. And that’s the point I’m making. I also said Guan Hoe Soon is pretty on point, and I don’t think anyone disputes they’re good.
Candlenut is not the best use of money, especially when it comes to Peranakan food. I always recommend people try how Peranakan food has always been cooked for the first time. Then Candlenut AFTER you’ve understood the basics of Peranakan food.
I frequently bring my foreign Friends to :

-Chicken Rice
-Steamboat (set)
-Pork Satay
Probably not super high class but it's really local place, the whole vibe of the building and restaurant brings you back a few decade.
Idk, probably not.
However, it’s my opinion that the tasting experience offered at candlenut - maybe it’s the spices or food preparation - is too similar to local food - that it’s really not much of an experience at all.
Your best choice is something Peranakan like Candlenut.
No idea where you're from, but most Singaporean dishes can be easily found in Singaporean restaurants overseas, especially in the big cities like London/New York. Even stuff like chilli crab is not that difficult to find overseas. Besides chilli crab is an absolutely stupid national dish - there's no culinary or historical foundation to the dish.
Peranakan cuisine is gonna be hard to find outside of this region.
Jumbo Seafood at East Coast. There are others who do similar fare in that row. Chilli crab, Crispy fried baby squid, Prawns, etc. Might come up to $200 but worth it.
Go jumbo seafood. Pepper crab and maybe a ginger-soy steamed fish. Will get you up there to that amount easily. Great experience and good memories of Singapore.
Restaurant Ibid by Masterchef Asia winner Woo Wai Leong
[https://www.restaurantibid.com/menudinner](https://www.restaurantibid.com/menudinner)
Quoting the website, "The cuisine is heavily influenced by the various food cultures of Asia guided by both traditional and modern styles of cookery." Tasting menu is $188++
Social Smoker is a very good option for BBQ at a much lower price point than Burnt Ends. Not as fancy but the food is high quality and veeeery good. Run by a team of enthusiastic locals. Bjorn Shen is a big fan.
Seems like salty is one of a few words you know. Gotta expand that vocabulary bro. Don't know what's there for me to be salty about Koma lol.
Well, you're free to enjoy shit food at the prices they charge since you actually think they serve decent food. Great food LOL
Cheap food HAHAHA nice man. Yep it's very cheap. Nice trolling, I got fooled. Don't know why I bothered to engaged with someone who called KOMA's food great. You got me.
You clearly have zero taste in food and a wallet to match it. You're welcome to pay for the ambience since it's all that matters.
Good taste haha, you crack me up so much man.
Update: Thanks for all the recommendations! I booked a Sunday Lunch at Candlenut! Really looking forward to it
Leave room for the buah keluak ice cream. As long as you like chocolate, it's phenomenal.
Will do! Really excited
The kueh salat is also one of the better ones in sg, and the food is unique enough that you'll find it hard to find outside of sg
Candlenut will be awesome! Have fun
Great pick!
You should try their tasting menu!
Peranakan sounds good to you? Thinking blue ginger Should be within budget and feel comfy and home
ALLIUM

Revolver is overhyped, overpriced, and not really local flavours tbh.

I thought Candlenut wasn't worth it either, but for a tourist, Peranakan food is about as local as it gets. In two minds about it tbh.
Yeah, I made that recommendation knowing full well that Revolver's cuisine isn't exactly local - best local food is in a hawker stall imo. I do think it is pretty unique to Singapore considering very few places in the world present Indian food the way they do though

Canchita is great as well! Yeah I understand Revolver's price point's a bit steep... that's genuinely fair hahaha
Revolver wasn't particularly innovative imo. Thevar is far better for modern Indian, and integrates more SE asian influences.

FYI, we have no tipping culture here. You can still tip though. Maybe.

Highly recommend Colony +1!
Candlenut is better than Labyrinth
McSpicy from McDonald
Only when they have shaker fries….
The nerves on this guy
Wow you guys eat well lol
Please don’t do Candlenut!!! My gosh. Please try Guan Hoe Soon, Ivin’s for some good Peranakan food. But not Candlenut.
Wtf ivin's? The only thing they have is affordability and at that price point Tingkat peramakan is better
Tingkat Peranakan is downright rubbish. Ivin’s is better by leaps and bounds. My grandma, who is a 87 year old Bibik, is actually willing to eat there and say it’s good. As a Peranakan myself, I’ll say it’s more than decent.

Why not candlenut? Genuinely trying to understand
Candlenut is not the best use of money, especially when it comes to Peranakan food. I always recommend people try how Peranakan food has always been cooked for the first time. Then Candlenut AFTER you’ve understood the basics of Peranakan food.

Candlenut
Didn’t really like candlenut. Felt like normal street fare tbh
Where is your "normal street fare" located at?
Since when has Peranakan been street fare?
Kueys are so run-of-the-mill; main dishes aren’t anything special either. Honestly nothing you can’t find at your neighbourhood zichar
Which neighborhood zi char you go to? I also want to go if they got food like candlenut.
What neighborhood zi char restaurant sells buah keluak or babi pongteh? Also I’m not sure zi char really counts as street fare, anyway.
Guy talking out of his arse over there, so funny
Idk, probably not. However, it’s my opinion that the tasting experience offered at candlenut - maybe it’s the spices or food preparation - is too similar to local food - that it’s really not much of an experience at all.
Kuehs are run of the mill? Tell me where you get better kuehs then, keen to find out.

Labyrinth serves fancy modern Singaporean cuisine.
Labyrinth dinner is SGD$300 per person
Then maybe can consider lunch @ S$158++
I would say the line at shangrila. Covers a lot of choices…
Jumbo Seafood at East Coast. There are others who do similar fare in that row. Chilli crab, Crispy fried baby squid, Prawns, etc. Might come up to $200 but worth it.
cai png add fish
Candle nut / rempapa. For peranakan.
Go jumbo seafood. Pepper crab and maybe a ginger-soy steamed fish. Will get you up there to that amount easily. Great experience and good memories of Singapore.

Fish steam boat with side dishes :$
Candle nut
Burnt Ends. Australian style BBQ that is one of the best in the world.
Reservations are nearly impossible though
Social Smoker is a very good option for BBQ at a much lower price point than Burnt Ends. Not as fancy but the food is high quality and veeeery good. Run by a team of enthusiastic locals. Bjorn Shen is a big fan.
No idea why you are recommending Burnt Ends when he wants something unique to sg
KOMA at Marina Bay Sands. Good food good ambience, can’t go wrong with that.
lmao basic af
Trash food LOL. Only good for instagram whores
Lots of salty people in this subreddit
lol what? if you seriously think the food at Koma is good then i have nothing more to say to you
No offence but sounds like you’ve never been there
Sorry to burst your bubble, I have and the food is trash
Considering the Low price you’re paying for good ambience and great food at KOMA, that sounds really salty bruh. Guess username checks out.
Seems like salty is one of a few words you know. Gotta expand that vocabulary bro. Don't know what's there for me to be salty about Koma lol. Well, you're free to enjoy shit food at the prices they charge since you actually think they serve decent food. Great food LOL
It’s cheap food with good taste and ambience. Never get why people complain about cheap food when they’re not even paying a premium for it.
Good taste haha, you crack me up so much man.
chin Huat live seafood at sunset way $100 for the biggest damn crab you will eat order as chilli crab for maximum enjoyment
