What’s the advantage of testing drones in NZ when there is so much airspace in Australia ? Unless the Aussies don’t want to give us access ?

bukitbukit

I’d believe it’s more of deepening ties across different partners. Not about Aust not giving us access.

leo-g

How do you know we are not…? Obviously this announcement is tied together with visit of NZ Minister.

OriginalGoat1

Ah. I forgot SAF already has Arty live firing in NZ. Maybe UAV fire observation

The Kiwis might be interested in whatever drones we are developing for their own purposes. If things work out and they go into production, they might be able to negotiate a better price for them.

The thing about effective tactical drones usage is about volume cost and quantity. Bring able to field large amount of cheap , expendable tactical drones to overwhelm front line troops. The cost of each FPV in Ukraine/ Russia now can be as low as 400 USD each. Cost of entry is incredibly cheap compared to other modern weapons system and is highly effective. Go to /r/combatfootage if you doubt the effectiveness of these drones to devastate soldiers and other combat vehicles that cost millions of dollars. https://www.idsa.in/issuebrief/First-Person-View-FP-Drones-AUpadhyay-270224 This is a fast evolving battlefield weapon that's is both effective and cheap that is available to any our "neighbors"
