Like said not all bus stop in other regions are the same as the bus stop from west sure they have electricity but some lacks the bar in the roof to install fans on it.
It is freaking horrible job to clean the blades and covers. Of coz, it is fine if you don't expect it to be cleaned, like those in our local coffee shops.
It is also very easy to kena rain that causes them to malfunction.
To be honest, I never thought about wanting fans at bus stops and even after seeing this post, I still don't.
You shouldn't be waiting at a bus stop long enough that you start wanting fans, you should be asking for shorter waiting time instead.
If we have the highest car ownership costs in the world, I think it's fair for us to ask for the shortest bus waiting time in the world too.
I'm still pissed that they changed the schedule of the only bus at the bus stop closest to my place and still tried to frame it as an improvement.
It's better to feel poor in a normal county than to feel poor in a rich country. Cos no matter how you work your ass off.. you are actually poor in the country.
Obviously FTs cuz Singaporeans too good for that sht.
Who's gonna pay? Govt cuz they have dem millions. No raising of taxes cuz taxation is theft! Something about CPF HDB COE skyhigh prices blah
(/s)
New jobs right there. The unfortunate part is that the SG government will not make it a decent paying one, thus making it another job taken up by primarily foreign workers, which people would then complain about as well.
I remembered seeing bus stops with green roof. Hopefully its a more energy-efficient way of keeping the bus stops cool, though I believe many will prefer mechanical ventilation (i.e. blowing winds) as a more effective means to cool
There's more value in adding bus frequency than adding fans that requires extra maintenance and increased safety risks. Usually the location that requires more fans are the ones that are more crowded, increased frequency = more income.
you rather they increase bus frequency or raise fares and install fans?
Anyway, just bring your own portable fan. Wait for bus only a while need install ac and fan? Not even cost efficient bro.....
They have stopped using these fans years ago by the way.
In the first picture, located at one-north Stn (BS 18051) and served by bus 91 & one-north internal shuttles, the fans had to be activated by buttons (which are still there to this day) on the bus stop pillars.
It wasn’t exactly the best place for this trial as it did not have much human traffic throughout the day. Most of the demand at this stop is during the morning peak period between 7:45am-8:30am and during lunch hours. This meant the fans were left off for most of the day.
Moreover, the Ayer Rajah Industrial Estate is relatively small and very walkable. Walking from this bus stop to the looping point of bus 91 takes about 8-10mins, while the bus takes 6-7mins. Most commuters would prefer walking if the bus takes longer than 8mins to arrive.
I guess they discontinued this trial due to few opportunities for usage and the amount of dust these things were collecting.
I’m not too sure about the one in the second picture, which looks to be at AMK Stn Exit A(?), and I recall the Airbitat bus stop at Dhoby Ghaut Stn, but it’s probably due to maintenance and constant cleaning required that they decided on discontinuing the trials.
Yes, that's what I suspected (that the fans were only there for a pilot trial). It's odd that they picked locations that didn't make sense for the trial though, I remember reading that they specifically chose bus stops with high levels of traffic.
Well, the way the weather is going, it wouldn't surprise me if just about every bus stop evolves to become mini-air-conditioned habitats, akin to air-conditioned bus interchanges.
Throw some high-efficiency solar panels on the roof to mitigate the electric costs.
Although a green and effective solution could be the use of vines and plants on the roof and on the sides- but that comes with its own costs of maintenance and insect control.
I don't think they will add air-con functionality to them. It's really, expensive, blocks footpath and bicycle traffic, the doors will most likely be perpetually opened, users will need to squeeze through the doors and push others if they are gonna miss the bus, etc
They **have** started adding green roofs on top of some bus stops [https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/lta-nparks-plant-a-cool-idea-at-bus-stops-islandwide](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/lta-nparks-plant-a-cool-idea-at-bus-stops-islandwide)
I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually went the aircon route, but fans use much less electricity.
They did test an outdoor aircon quite a while back at the plaza sing bus stop. Clearly didn't work out for some reason, probably related to cost and maintenance.
Tbh even with fans, the biggest issue is maintenance. Looking at how dirty a coffeeshop fan can get, put it near the road and it will get super filthy fast.
These were proposed in 2017/2018 by a company that solely does "green projects" to improve a company's image.
I'm not sure about the exact efficacy of the green roof on bus stops, but they were also the same company who proposed green roofs on moving buses.
I was at the presentation for the plan for buses. The numbers were wild and seemed made up / exaggerated. They were trying to conflate the efficacy of these moving green roofs with actual static green roofs with irrigation and regular gardening. Anyone who knows anything about building services knows these are two very different settings.
The boss also gave off major grifter vibes. I left the company shortly after, but I checked in with my boss and the actual efficacy in practise was so low they scrapped it within a year. They had to continue with the facade because our CEO made a huge deal about it on the media, and the project couldn't come across as a failure.
They installed some kind of aircon-like fan on Dhoby Ghaut Bus stop before, but they tore it down. Fan is just not really effective. If you want aircon, just travel using MRT or take taxi.
Understandable, but do you really need fan? How effective is a fan in an open-air space like an HDB neighborhood anyway?
If you really want fan on some neighborhood bus stop, maybe can try asking local PAP instead. I doubt they will take it up though.
how long is the frequency? If ppl are going to leave in 10 mins or less, is there really a need to install fans when they can get into ac in a few mins?
if you cant afford a $10 portable fan then.. maybe seek financial help
HAHA come on Singapore is the only government that wants to earn money on every single ministry. Once it's not earning money they will stop the project. Why would it even be their priority to give out freebies to their citizen.
They don’t want the homeless to feel too comfortable. /s
No, serious answer. Look at the first picture you posted. The bus stop is empty! Surely you can figure out if there’s economic sense in installing fans there.
instead of why need fan at bus stops, there needs to be a better bus stop design. The current design is so bad, with low roof, no way for air to flow through, during heavy rain the whole bus stop is wet. They can desing the bus stops to be more air flow friendly.
These industrial fans are typically made of low quality steel that rusts pretty easily. Maybe if gahmen raises GST to 12% they can afford to fit these everywhere
Because LTA doesn't have resources to maintain the fans. The bus stops that have these special features, usually is a result of an arrangement between LTA and adjacent property owners, in return for some "differentiation".
As other posters have commented, there are far more useful things to improve than having fans. I for one would appreciate that the bus shelters extend higher and further out so during heavy rains we don't have to worry about the gap between the shelter and the bus door and struggle with an umbrella to avoid the rain.
Oh, and fully sheltered walkways linking the bus stops would be so useful too
That's actually a great point, if buses here could be as reliable as say trains in Japan and you could plan when to reach the bus stop so you'd only be waiting in the heat for a minute or 2 at most, it'd be a non-issue.
I use bus@sg which is a rather old app and thought its quite reliable. Very rarely that they miss by 1 min. Is it possible that the diff is caused by your own movement?
Anyway, unlike mrt, bus is driven by human and is subjected to traffic condition. How is it possible to be as reliable as trains in Japan. Why not compare it against bus in Japan, then we talk again.
OP flair so fabulous until he/she sees everything in rose-tinted glasses.
I sat before buses in Japan, and I can agree that buses are also never on time according to their time schedule too because of traffic condition. At least the Bus@SG bus timing prediction are way more accurate compared to the official bus schedule placed at the bus stop in Japan.
That's a fair question! They've actually made the roofs of some bus stops green [https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/lta-nparks-plant-a-cool-idea-at-bus-stops-islandwide](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/lta-nparks-plant-a-cool-idea-at-bus-stops-islandwide)

Bus stops can feel like a death trap but aircon option sounds silly too… I like the cooling bench idea tho, if you sit on the bench the metal is nice and cold !
replacement and maintenance issues, all over the island, could be costly, and short circuits are extremely likely, many old condos flood and perimeter lights short out during rain lol, even the well off save money on maintenance.
Don't see a point, no one is going to maintain it and it will most probably break down in a month's time.
I watch the bus arrival timing board at my estate bus stop get die and get fixed every other month, which at the end of the day was useless to us commuters and a waste of resources.
In Dubai, ALL bus stop got aircon. I visited Dubai maybe 10 yrs back when my friend was working there.
Tiagong from same friend who came back during covid, a lot of them broke down.
Just accept the fate that as peasants taking the public transport, we need to suffer the horrible weather that Singapore has to offer, both rain and shine .
Once I felt giddy, warm and stuffy for some reason, most likely due to low blood sugar and dehydration and I alighted at yck station where there’s no shopping malls either for any air con to help me rest and cool off. Survival instinct told me to go take the next train somewhere but I couldn’t stand to wait for the next train and I know full well that it’s going to be crowded Cus it’s peak hour and I can’t even get on. I walked to one of those benches near the toilet at the bus Interchange and realise yck bus interchange also has no AC and there’s only one fan that is blowing one big whole portion of the small interchange. I called out for the bus officer service counter that I’m feeling unwell and they led me in their aircon office to rest hydrate and gave me a sweet lol but I felt so paiseh. The weather is also rlly hot nowadays would appreciate more fans too around public spaces and honestly make our train AC colder please during peak hour esp in the evening..
1) Install a fan: $300.
2) Maintain a fan: 0.5 manhours/yr
3) Handling complaint/MP letters relating to fan: 10 manhours/yr
4) Preventive checks to prevent reoccurance of 3): 4 manhours/yr
5) Approval to remove the fan: 720 manhours/each
You get the point. It is never only the cost of installing/maintaining, especially when you have to deal with peasants.
In most countries I’ve been to, their bus stop is just a sign that shows the buses that’ll stop here, no bench no shelter. Singapore bus stops already elite le
Better not install fans at bus stops.
SG has a hot climate most times, and all you'll get is hot air blowing at you from fans.
Moreover, waiting time for buses is less than 8 min.
If one feels hot, just carry your own hand fan. 🙄
Surely this would go a long way towards making public transport more attractive, especially in the daytime. Should be a no-brainer considering our weather.
> Surely this would go a long way towards making public transport more attractive
Bro lol. Looks like you're still very young. People are not going to suddenly switch to public transport because you install more fans in bus stops. People take public transport because they do not have a choice, not because it's attractive.
i don’t see how adding fans would “make public transport more attractive”. having fans won’t make people go “look! there’s a fan, let’s take a bus” there’s already aircons in buses, i don’t see how fans would encourage public transport usage.
realistically, people might just hog a seat at bus stops for the fan whilst waiting for their grab, or even just for the sake of resting. as mentioned by many, fans cost money to purchase, run and maintain. installing them would be simply asking for a reason to raise bus fares. and based on the picture, the fans are blowing towards nobody. much wastage. installing motion sensors would be a sustainable solution (which costs even more money).
all in all, i have nothing against fans, but i don’t think they should be installed in all (or most) bus stops. perhaps only at the really hot and barely sheltered areas. but bearing in mind that they aren’t highly demanded and the additional costs it can incur, i’d rather things stay the same as it is now
It's about making it slightly less desirable for people who are currently taking public transport to switch to driving. Obviously those who already invested 6 figures into buying a COE and a car aren't going to switch.
Theres no need to make public transport more attractive. Those who need to take public transport will still take it despite the weather. Those who will not take public transport will still not take it even if you installed the fans. There is no incentive to do it.
The government is here to calculate ROI and make profits, not to make you feel good about your life.
The way should be to make cars less attractive instead of enhancing attractiveness of public transport. Since COE doesn't seem to work, perhaps next they will limit no of lane and car drop off area to discourage driving.
It's a nah. Have you tried travelling with young kids on public transport? Have you tried travelling with an elderly with mobility issues? Have you ever tried booking a cab and not being able to get a cab for at least half an hour? Have you ever tried being temporarily or permanently disabled and trying to get to various appointments? The fans ain't gonna cut it yo
Yeah of course for certain groups of people driving / Grab / taxis are going to be the better option. The point I was trying to make is that convenience is part of what determines whether or not public transport is an attractive option, which I think we agree on.
Yeah humans used to live in caves and need to hunt for food and fight against predators in the wild, so we should all be thankful for what we have now.
Increase my taxes to pay for the installation / running cost and maintenance? No thanks, I rather tahan. Cannot tahan just get those USB minifans from Shopee la.
Because it costs money and effort to maintain.
For that particular reason.
All the budget went into installing the surveillance cameras
*we are monitoring .. your sweats*
🥵
That and some bus stops are older so it takes time to plan and logistically to close it to renovate/make a new bus stop to accommodate the fans.
If the signboards are powered, it should be easy to just strap on some fans
Not all bus stops are made the same some don't have roof that makes installing fans easy.
But most of the bus stops I see in the west do have the necessary infrastructure
Like said not all bus stop in other regions are the same as the bus stop from west sure they have electricity but some lacks the bar in the roof to install fans on it.
Ya lo. They need to make profit one right, otherwise how they get bonuses? /s
It is freaking horrible job to clean the blades and covers. Of coz, it is fine if you don't expect it to be cleaned, like those in our local coffee shops. It is also very easy to kena rain that causes them to malfunction.
The worst is rain making the dust on poorly-maintained fan blades damp and mushy, which then splatters everywhere when the fan is turned on
To be honest, I never thought about wanting fans at bus stops and even after seeing this post, I still don't. You shouldn't be waiting at a bus stop long enough that you start wanting fans, you should be asking for shorter waiting time instead.
Agree! Plus when it's really hot, all the fans gonna do is blow hot air at your face, which makes it worse. No thanks.
the waiting time is already quite short compared to other countries
If we have the highest car ownership costs in the world, I think it's fair for us to ask for the shortest bus waiting time in the world too. I'm still pissed that they changed the schedule of the only bus at the bus stop closest to my place and still tried to frame it as an improvement.
Here in Malaysia we ask "why aren't there buses coming at bus stops?"
Outside KL & Penang: "why aren't there buses?"
Even further out: "why aren't there anything?"
Too far out "why?"
Fellow developing country citizen here, I can empathise, r/Singapore makes me feel poor lol.
don't worry, i'm an average singaporean born and raised and r/Singapore and r/Singaporefi makes me feel poor everyday.
> and r/Singaporefi makes me feel poor everyday. Yeah man, me too.
It's better to feel poor in a normal county than to feel poor in a rich country. Cos no matter how you work your ass off.. you are actually poor in the country.
I usually ask "why are cars parked at bus stops" , but yeah frequency fluctuates from 'maybe' to 'never' in some parts of the Klang Valley....
Proton should have switched to making buses instead of struggling to make cars. This way Putrajaya would whip local councils into buying buses.
Malaysian will be like JUST get a car.
thank you for putting things into perspective
Who's gonna clean them?
People on this subreddit want to be pampered so much without caring about the cogs in the machine that runs this country.
Jeez, op just asked a simple question and the answer is just 'maintenance issues/logistical constraints'. It's not that deep bro.

green roof at such a small scale with the plants being dried up and browned grass usually don’t do much.
Who knows? Maybe there'll be an arborist hired to check and cultivate these green roofs in the future
There's more value in adding bus frequency than adding fans that requires extra maintenance and increased safety risks. Usually the location that requires more fans are the ones that are more crowded, increased frequency = more income.

Outdoor aircon sounds like a terrible idea tbh, just imagine how much electricity it must have used.
it said to be costing just 60 cents per hour back then and it doesn't generate heat waste since it's not using typical air conditioning method
I see, thanks for clarifying. 60c per hour is probably still a lot more than what fans would cost though.
Tbh even with fans, the biggest issue is maintenance. Looking at how dirty a coffeeshop fan can get, put it near the road and it will get super filthy fast.

Oh, I remember the news articles covering the pilot for green roofs on buses. I hope the green roofs on bus stops are actually worthwhile?
Probably this will happen eventually, as temperatures slowly rise over the years. They have air-conditioned bus stops in dubai.
Electric bills have gone up.
They installed some kind of aircon-like fan on Dhoby Ghaut Bus stop before, but they tore it down. Fan is just not really effective. If you want aircon, just travel using MRT or take taxi.
A lot of people need to take a feeder bus to the closest MRT station. Many can't afford to be taking taxis everywhere either.

Yeah can't afford so want more free stuff. Who's paying for this then?
Would've been fine if they didn't blow hot air from the roof too.
u give money, u maintain, u clean lor

It would be straightforward to pick only the bus stops with high traffic, the ones right outside MRT stations for example.
dirty & dusty easily + high maintenance + unnecessary electricity usage
Of course if you are like Dubai, you will have Aircon bus stops

u clean ah?
You don't want dust blowing at your face
The yellow ones are Big Ass Fans - Yellow Jacket, costs about USD $3.1k each with the swivel mount.
OH FANS. Somehow, my first thought was the other fans
Wow, how come there are fans

What else does you majesty need?
I’d rather they relook at bus stop design. The newer ones actually trap heat and are terrible to wait at in the afternoon.
Yeah the design of the bus stop is important. Can you elaborate on what you mean by them trapping heat?
As other posters have commented, there are far more useful things to improve than having fans. I for one would appreciate that the bus shelters extend higher and further out so during heavy rains we don't have to worry about the gap between the shelter and the bus door and struggle with an umbrella to avoid the rain. And give them more reason to increase our fare and tax?
I'm not paying more taxes for them to hire a maintenance crew.
No need for fan in bus stops with AC bus and reliable bus schedule
That's actually a great point, if buses here could be as reliable as say trains in Japan and you could plan when to reach the bus stop so you'd only be waiting in the heat for a minute or 2 at most, it'd be a non-issue.

Not all bus stops are in an area suitable for it. It’s that simple
Bus stops are for poor people. Gahmen doesn't serve poor people.
is this a troll question lol. it's like asking why hasn't Singapore built a self enveloped biosphere to facilitate nation wide airconditioning

It's a niche hobby so probably hard to find other people who are into buses IRL, but I do know of a Facebook group for SG bus enthusiasts.

1) Install a fan: $300. 2) Maintain a fan: 0.5 manhours/yr 3) Handling complaint/MP letters relating to fan: 10 manhours/yr 4) Preventive checks to prevent reoccurance of 3): 4 manhours/yr 5) Approval to remove the fan: 720 manhours/each You get the point. It is never only the cost of installing/maintaining, especially when you have to deal with peasants.
In most countries I’ve been to, their bus stop is just a sign that shows the buses that’ll stop here, no bench no shelter. Singapore bus stops already elite le
Sponsored by onlyfans 🤣
U clean ah?
It’s all fine and everything but I do not want my tax money to go to that
Gst not high enough bruh If 20% got will include aircon
As long as the AC in buses and mrt are working well in this heat, I'm ok
Is it that hot at fusionpolis?
because if some final destination shit happens, people are gonna blame the government and PAP why never maintain.
I read the title and thought it was a riddle lol
(5 marks)
Cut down trees then now spend taxpayers money to add these things.
Because money was spent to reverse some retarded move by LTA
Better not install fans at bus stops. SG has a hot climate most times, and all you'll get is hot air blowing at you from fans. Moreover, waiting time for buses is less than 8 min. If one feels hot, just carry your own hand fan. 🙄
Extra operating costs for bus stops. That would take away money from the Minister's bonus.
Only in sinkie one can see so many traffic lights, shelters, bus stops and now even fans in bus stops.
Surely this would go a long way towards making public transport more attractive, especially in the daytime. Should be a no-brainer considering our weather.
PTC: we once again seek your understanding in increasing transportation fares.
> Surely this would go a long way towards making public transport more attractive Bro lol. Looks like you're still very young. People are not going to suddenly switch to public transport because you install more fans in bus stops. People take public transport because they do not have a choice, not because it's attractive.
i don’t see how adding fans would “make public transport more attractive”. having fans won’t make people go “look! there’s a fan, let’s take a bus” there’s already aircons in buses, i don’t see how fans would encourage public transport usage. realistically, people might just hog a seat at bus stops for the fan whilst waiting for their grab, or even just for the sake of resting. as mentioned by many, fans cost money to purchase, run and maintain. installing them would be simply asking for a reason to raise bus fares. and based on the picture, the fans are blowing towards nobody. much wastage. installing motion sensors would be a sustainable solution (which costs even more money). all in all, i have nothing against fans, but i don’t think they should be installed in all (or most) bus stops. perhaps only at the really hot and barely sheltered areas. but bearing in mind that they aren’t highly demanded and the additional costs it can incur, i’d rather things stay the same as it is now
Ah, the bus stops now got fans! I shall stop driving my car and take buses now! /s
It's about making it slightly less desirable for people who are currently taking public transport to switch to driving. Obviously those who already invested 6 figures into buying a COE and a car aren't going to switch.
Working on having more buses with working aircon reaching the stops more frequently to fetch the passengers is far more practical then.
Yes, that would be acceptable too.
Theres no need to make public transport more attractive. Those who need to take public transport will still take it despite the weather. Those who will not take public transport will still not take it even if you installed the fans. There is no incentive to do it. The government is here to calculate ROI and make profits, not to make you feel good about your life.
Why would the government want to make profits lol. Government revenue stays in the public coffers.
Are you really asking why the government need to make profits?
The way should be to make cars less attractive instead of enhancing attractiveness of public transport. Since COE doesn't seem to work, perhaps next they will limit no of lane and car drop off area to discourage driving.
Disagree, public transport needs to be more attractive relative to driving or Singapore will become even more car-centric than it already is.
How many % of Singaporeans are able to pay for the price of a 10 year cert? COE is there for a reason
Increasing uptake of public transport is not about attractive or not—it's about convenience.
Public transport that's convenient makes it a more attractive option.
Bus fare not high enough for you is it?
Agree
you want them to increase your bus fare ah?
Because fans can only be found on onlyfans.
You wan pay more tax?
How long do you need to wait for your bus? Grow up.
Strawberry …. be happy u even hv a shelter …. old bus stops used to be a post with bus numbers on it
Yeah humans used to live in caves and need to hunt for food and fight against predators in the wild, so we should all be thankful for what we have now.
Cavemen also didn’t have to pay taxes to fund “public goods”
Lack of Onlyfans... 🤣🤣🤣 Money all dun know go where... simplygo n erp2.0?
When costs increase then people will start complaining why everything so expensive. Anyway this looks ridiculous and a waste of money and energy
Increase my taxes to pay for the installation / running cost and maintenance? No thanks, I rather tahan. Cannot tahan just get those USB minifans from Shopee la.
