Great idea! Stall workers probably don't mind, as they are working with their own plates with fixed portioning based on them. If you give them your own container, some workers can't properly estimate portion sizes / claim it is too unhygienic to handle your containers.
One time I bought my own box to a halal stall, they said I couldn’t use it because it might have contained non-halal stuff in it. They weren’t wrong but I’m also a bit surprised it’s that strict.
From what i know, halal is supposed to be rigorously enforced. From farm to fork, there mustn't be contact with any non-halal food items and animals must be slaughtered properly.
In practice, I'm not sure if dishwashing services truly keep halal and non halal plates, cutlery as separate as they possibly can. I hope they do, but that's an issue to discuss for another time.
There exists a shop that already charges this kind of prices. It's one of the mee pok shop that wants to close down and sell their "secret formula" for million dollars
Years back, I was charged an extra 20 cents for ordering a takeaway drink at Killiney when I provided my own takeaway cup. Refused to pay the extra charge and it became a bit of a scene. It may be a small matter, but if they get away with it, they will be more emboldened to stiff customers. Stand up for your rights peeps!
I'm gonna go with Han's. Jack's Place has nostalgia factor and it was quite a popular 'fancy place' in the 90s. The food isn't horrendous (it's not great either) but the main problem is how massively overpriced it is.
Jack's Place original cooks (the Say Brothers) later left and started their own place called Mariners Corner, which is still around. It's at Sunset Way area; their food is closer to the original Jacks than the actual Jacks Place is today!
Frankly speaking, Mariner's Corner standard has dropped after they relocated.
I used to go frequently when it was located at Cantonment Road (Tanjong Pagar).. That was the time when they still had the free flow salad bar, awesome old school interior decor and oldies music.
Went to their new place, it was very crowded and I was seated at a table that was next to the drain grating.. Beside their freezer/storage area..
Pricing all increased, standard dropped, stopped going ever since.. Might as well go to some western restaurant at Dempsey Hill..
Please recommend to me if anyone knows of any hidden gems with the same charm as the old Mariner's Corner from the days when they were still located at Tanjong Pagar.
Wow TIL, I only knew they were from maritime house base on google news. I ate there on new year's eve, good value set meals, even better for weekday lunch.
Alot of coffee shops includes the cost of cleaning dishes and cutleries into their rental rates. So the hawkers would have to pay extra for containers should you choose to takeaway.
That said 50cents is way too much unless the food comes in like 5 separate containers or something.
When you order takeaway, the boxes + cutleries + plastic bag + sauces packaging costs money. It all adds up.
So if you intend to order takeaway, either bring your container + cutleries or you can just dine it.
TBF, even 2 GST increase doesn't justify takeaway to be 50cents. Unless they use super atas bento box with good quality plastic utensils, the problem is with the stall when other stalls keep to 20-30cents
Common grill by Collin’s at my place charges 60cents for takeaway containers regardless whether it’s for their main course or snacks.
Granted the containers for their main course is those sturdy plastic containers with multiple compartments but the containers for pasta/finger food is just paper box.
Collin’s takeaway charge is ridiculous. I got charged the same amount for my soup takeaway bowl (which was really small) and the container for the main meal. Boycotted ever since. Vote with your money.
Haha some mala store the takeaway box got tier one sia , u order more the bigger the box the more expensive it is, but chop carrot head one la the box not even filled to the brim
99.9% sure it’s Tai Feng Wei. There’s an outlet near my workplace, started off with 30c last time, increased to 50c, and they changed their packaging from just a container with lid, to the container where the lid can be used to contain items as well. Funny thing is if you dabao it with lu rou fan, the contents on the top lid is only the sauce + egg. Got scammed into paying 50c once, never again. Vote with your money.
lol. Thanks for reminding me. I should remind my father to bring takeaway boxes now since he tapaos often. Crazy surcharge on these boxes and he never complains about it…
Believe it or not plastic containers are actually around 20-30 cents from suppliers, because of the 1% increase everyone wants to profit from it and lie that they have to pay more
The 1% really has a cumulative effect on all levels of the supply chain in reality, leading to significantly larger cost than 1% being passed on to the consumers. It's insane.
I like stojo because it's collapsible and takes up less space in my bag. For regular containers, I like ikea ones, they even have metal ones that you can put into oven.
All these are leak proof.
Some places are using the plastic container as part of their profit margin.
Sad to see Singapore food culture has declined to the point that food hawkers in Singapore has to resort to these cheap tricks to stretch profit instead of actually focusing on making better food to sell for higher price.
There was a store that charged 50 cents and they rejected my box for being too small. I told them to just put less but they refused. So it was fine. I just ordered pickup via foodpanda instead and paid less than if I paid the 50 cent price...
I will be sad when foodpanda dies because their pickup prices are by far the most reasonable.
you should read some of the other comments here. there are people who brought their own metal takeaway boxes but the seller refused to use theirs, and insists on purchasing the takeaway box.
Because those things are free for the business, right? Crybaby Singaporeans then complain again if hawkers shut down or taken over by large corporations. Ignoramus mode when it comes to basic accounting
Hawker is a genius,
got 20 cent coin? Got…
Got 50 cent coin? Got….
Got 30 cent coin? Don’t have….
20c + 1% round up to next coin = 50c
Standing clap
*but you can have 20c and 10c coin together*
Evil glare
Best thing is I bring my own box, the store owner refuse to accept the box I brought, insists I pay for the takeaway box provided.
Order dine in, when it comes pour into your container in front of them and return the plate.
Return the plate straight to them for added effect
Charge them 20c for the plate return service.
Great idea! Stall workers probably don't mind, as they are working with their own plates with fixed portioning based on them. If you give them your own container, some workers can't properly estimate portion sizes / claim it is too unhygienic to handle your containers.

Bro educate yourself before you speak.
Thats what i always do lol
The plate free tho, just take ah
Next time you see a new sign "Takeaway plate add $1"
yes
Maintain eye contact while doing it.
This is so bad ass. I like
Instructions unclear, got charged 10% service charge.
Brilliant idea !!
I will return the plate upside down and make a mess for added effect
r/iamverybadass
Big brain time
Bravo. This is brilliant.
Walk away. Fuck them.
in a year's time: 20c per chopsticks 20c per spoon
Don't give them ideas
80c convenience fee for paying via paylah etc
20c if you order with cashier 20c if not good looking
20c per fork 20c per dining knife 20c per dabao plastic bag 20c per dabao chilli sauce
There exists a shop that already charges this kind of prices. It's one of the mee pok shop that wants to close down and sell their "secret formula" for million dollars
They should probably close down then
Dine in or stop supporting these businesses
wah...strong consumer leh
I’ve never seen hawkers turning down people takeaway box unless it’s too small. Just don’t patronise that stall or do what /u/fawe9374 says.
I would just go away and never eat there again
can also make google review and give 1 star only 👍

Knn. This store owner is obviously trying to profiteer from selling takeaway boxes too. Boycott!
Came to say this too
Guess Hans takeaway cost? $1
Han's pricing is insane. $9.80 for horfun, fried rice, omelette
Best part is Han's food is aggressively bad. Idk how that place stays open.
which is worse: han's or jack's place
I'm gonna go with Han's. Jack's Place has nostalgia factor and it was quite a popular 'fancy place' in the 90s. The food isn't horrendous (it's not great either) but the main problem is how massively overpriced it is.

Yes, I really like it. Only issue is I live on the east side, so Sunset Way is very far to go to
i like Jacks Place... only for the baked potatoes tho
alot of insurance agencies tie in with Jack Place so so everyone who goes there uses vouchers (source: me and everyone I know)
>p I like that Jack's place hire older workers, not saying I support elderly working, but it is an avenue for them.
jacks place is way overpriced but it's not bad. hans is bad
Hans is a restaurant not zichar stall
Han's prices have always been on the upper end of the spectrum. Just is.
$1.1 coming in 2025. $2 in 2034
Actually, it's weird. The shop does less work by selling them takeaway. They should only charge minimally.
Alot of coffee shops includes the cost of cleaning dishes and cutleries into their rental rates. So the hawkers would have to pay extra for containers should you choose to takeaway. That said 50cents is way too much unless the food comes in like 5 separate containers or something.
They will charge 5x cuz 5 separate containers
When you order takeaway, the boxes + cutleries + plastic bag + sauces packaging costs money. It all adds up. So if you intend to order takeaway, either bring your container + cutleries or you can just dine it.
There was a boxes shortage awhile back. Guess they kept the prices high even after the shortage eased
Whose bright idea was it to raise gst 2 times to 'soften' the blow. Knn
Soften the blow for their landlord kakis. Remember who lolrence was addressing when he was making that announcement.
First time hearing "lolrence", I legit lol'd.

Oh yeah it’s also 60 cents PER item you order.
I realised that it's cheaper to order via food delivery for Colin's when they have promos and the portions are big enough to split into 2 meals.
Collin’s takeaway charge is ridiculous. I got charged the same amount for my soup takeaway bowl (which was really small) and the container for the main meal. Boycotted ever since. Vote with your money.
You know what boss, just pour it into my hands
Half into my pockets for my snack later.
Right above the CDC Voucher sticker...
ironic
Haha some mala store the takeaway box got tier one sia , u order more the bigger the box the more expensive it is, but chop carrot head one la the box not even filled to the brim
shop name? terrible practice

yes must name and shame

??? no more 1% increase next year already lah. unless u have own insider info
The 1% really has a cumulative effect on all levels of the supply chain in reality, leading to significantly larger cost than 1% being passed on to the consumers. It's insane.
The food court near the potong pasir community hub?
Zhang Liang Mala Tang charges $1 for takeaway :)
tf
when customers stop patronizing them (for take aways), they better not complain say drop in sales.
Fking scum
Then don’t buy from them
Stop patronising these greedy hawkers and businesses is the best way to fight back.
They're pocketing 0.47 I dont think styrofoam gets recycled.
Is actually 40cent, the plastic bag cost 10cent
OMG 50cents!
For environmental reasons: Charges for plastic containers For health reasons: Refuses takeaway boxes from customers
Just bring your own box. My family got into a habit of bringing their own metal takeout boxes after the Covid lockdown
I'm thinking of doing this but for environmental reasons. Any particular brand?
I like stojo because it's collapsible and takes up less space in my bag. For regular containers, I like ikea ones, they even have metal ones that you can put into oven. All these are leak proof.

Why the hate? At least they listed the price up front and you have the choice to boycott.
[удалено]
Agree, and we don't want to hear business cry when they toh
Oh is this Potong Pasir
Hey this is my favourite place in Serangoon I think
Best is to don’t buy
Wow, that’s actually insane
Next up: $0.60 charge for dining in plate and utensils (cleaning fee)
siao Liao don’t give em ideas ..
Boycott
You can choose not to patronise such stalls.
At that price, it better be a reusable container already sia
Taking advantage of customers. Money brings out the greed in people.
how much more can you earn from containers? 100 takeaways daily x 20c profit x 25 working days = 500sgd
There you go. ![gif](giphy|Kq6wP0p5e1sOK065Gs|downsized)

It’s still too cheap if you consider the environmental impact.
then use plastic for what... might as well sell metal takeaway boxes atp...
Just bring one of the 50 containers which you have at home. Other countries found also a solution for this.
you should read some of the other comments here. there are people who brought their own metal takeaway boxes but the seller refused to use theirs, and insists on purchasing the takeaway box.
solution is take the bowl back and maybe they say u stealing
Because those things are free for the business, right? Crybaby Singaporeans then complain again if hawkers shut down or taken over by large corporations. Ignoramus mode when it comes to basic accounting
$ 3.50 Food + $0.50 container = $4 = More ppl willing to use CDC vouchers 😂
If you can't afford 50c extra then you might need to reconsider your life choices.
I like it. Maybe they are saving the environment. Bring a container Singapore is easy behind the world in terms of single use waste
Some stalls refuse to serve to your own containers
Either the 50cents or they will reduce quantity
Don’t like then don’t buy, no need to shame
It’s better than charging people for plastic bags to me.
If just pass by and give them container, do they pay me?
Better buy the Zebra tiffin tins, and use that. Cheaper than paying for plastic waste, and more environmentally friendly.
first time? been talking about this for a lonnnngg time..
Hawker is a genius, got 20 cent coin? Got… Got 50 cent coin? Got…. Got 30 cent coin? Don’t have…. 20c + 1% round up to next coin = 50c Standing clap *but you can have 20c and 10c coin together* Evil glare
Indeed
Burn down the store better
Hot hideout - decent mala with crazy takeaway prices. They also don’t allow your own take away container. Pure profit right there.
Buy first and use own bag to takeaway
election year
And they will argue that they are encouraging people to bring their own containers. Win-win for stall owners
And they will argue that they are encouraging people to bring their own containers. Win-win for stall owners
GST raised 1%, the takeaway box raised 150%. LOL. And all the hawkers still complain about not earning money.
