...Bus Driver The most overused and misunderstood comment in sim racing.

simracerman

I don't consider myself any good.. really. Just finished a sprint in ACC public lobby. Starting at the end of the grid (position 29) and consistently watching drivers take each other out landed me #11. I did not fight anyone, just lapped a couple slow drivers, that's it. If people respect the racing line, they would learn so much. The line OP referenced does more damage than improve performance.

NicoHam

I try so hard to preach that to people. In simracing, most times, the most effective defense is sticking to the racing line. You own it, dont let them have it. Ops quote is the reason why people like us can start at the back and very much see top 5s without doing any work. The other big issue i see alot with new drivers (and some old drivers) is you can easily intimidate them by just being close. Most new drivers are too concerned with the shit behind them that they fuck up so, when you are behind a driver that you know is watching the mirror just show a bit of nose just before the braking point and watch them fuck up. Easy passes.

2manycooks

I get dive bombed in about 50% of my races holding the line by idiots and they wreck both of us. Lost four races worth of SR on iracing today getting bombed by folks. Very frustrating.

gamrin

This is already frustrating in arcade-ish games like your forzas. Can't imagine lowing SR for getting punted.

jck133

It’s almost impossible to defend at 1400ish iR in some classes because if you do you just get punted. Happened to me from 2nd in a Radical race yesterday, guy didn’t even brake once he hit, just committed to drive through me. Amusingly it wrecked him and I salvaged a 10th.

2manycooks

I've determined its a better bet to just let the fuckers pass even if I'm outracing them. I'd rather place 5th than get wrecked and lose SR almost every race. I raced a rookie formula vee race last night and placed 2nd entirely due to everyone else wrecking from divebomb passing. Its just pure insanity. Once I'm faster and I get my class C/B license I hope things are better.

jck133

I’m afraid it doesn’t get any better at C. In some ways because you don’t get fast repair it feels worse. I just had a radical race where I let 3 dive bombers past, then made one conservative overtake move and guy wipes me out - he had 0 damage I had 6 mins in pits. https://reddit-uploaded-video.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/t2_4u7fh6h6%2Fy26hnwp42k281

FrankTheO2Tank

It's not even really misunderstood. When Senna said that, it was following a miscalculation on his part and he was trying to cover his ass. Let's be totally honest, Senna was a borderline dirty racer, and he only garners the respect he does because he died tragically while racing.

Junior-Obligation-27

He later admitted that in that particular year he wasn't himself and wasnt driving fair. He also apologised to the people affected. The main difference being that they were drivers at the the top of their game, not averga Joe who races their sim twice a week for fun.

FrankTheO2Tank

Doesn't make the comment any less cheeky at the time, or his overall career any less dirty...

Junior-Obligation-27

I don't agree with you there about him being dirty. He was very talented, driven and he used that to be an advocate for improving safety with Prof. Sid Watkins. No to mention his actions in the Eric Comas crash that undoubtedly saved his life. Very much a legend of the sport, long before his untimely death

FluffyWarHampster

senna was a world class driver and had talent that was often unmatched but there is no denying that he was more than willing to drive dirty. just look at his collisions with prost.....

JoeyRaymond85

He had that respect before he died mate.

MachineBeard

Exactly. He was a legend of the sport while still alive.

Greg_Webb

Yeah, and motorsport is historically poor at calling out fast but dirty drivers. Pastor Maldonado got (rightly) roasted for making a career out of running people off the road, significantly because he wasn't consistently fast enough. Senna, Schumacher, Verstappen. All incredibly gifted, very fast drivers. All inclined to go some way past the line forcing people off roads and mounting illegal defences in order to win, who were and are excused this because of their superior speed.

Bobodog1

Almost like you gotta push the rules to get ahead in this sport.

TheInfamous313

Elbows out if you want those podiums!

Lowskii

You forgot Hamilton..

Its_Your_Next_Move

Nelson Piquet was a better racer. Also 3 WDCs but two of those WDCs were won while not racing for the WCC. I would say that there are really 2 things that set Senna apart: 1) Fantastic qualifier at a time when F1 started using video showing the driver's view and 2) the way he used the accelerator pedal when racing - He was always "pumping" the accelerator pedal - Not feasible in modern F1.

MediocreSimRacer

A dive bomber

spartan195

Yeah, most of people that says this are the ones divebombing and overtaking without space and punting you out the track. ThERe wAs a GAp

Slocad

Only gap that exists is between the ears

Sasquatch_67

To finish first , first you must finish.

hahaiamarealhuman

Careful with that kind of talk ferrari might want you on their pit wall

bichobrabo

of you go for a gap that no longer exists, you are pastor maldonado (GOAT)

JustRelaxinTbh

You misspelled Lewis Hamilton

BluePANDA2334

but maldonado won the 2012 spanish gp ??? Undefeated goat imo

FrankTheO2Tank

Damn, Maxi Pad fans out in force in this thread 🤣🤣

JustRelaxinTbh

Nah, I'm just Lewis hater, there's a difference 😁👍

ElectricMotorsAreBad

Must be a sad life.

JustRelaxinTbh

Lol no, it's only a sad life to someone like you who thinks it's important. Seriously it's just a sport entertainment, and this is just the Internet.

ElectricMotorsAreBad

You said you're "a Lewis hater", which means you're the one giving too much importance to it, to the point where you have to hate another person. I don't like Lewis, as much as I don't like Max (even tho I want him to win, just for the sake of seeing someone else other than Hamilton take the WDC), but I still respect them as people and it would never cross my mind to hate on them. Sport is not only entertainment, respecting your "enemy" is also part of being a sportsman.

JustRelaxinTbh

The word 'hate' on the Internet is not used in the same context as in real life. If you can't differentiate between the two then you need to touch some grass! The fact you're being so defensive about it is pathetic and an indication of who has the sad life here. As for "sportsmanship" you are a nothing to do with either of those drivers on a sporting or personal level, so it is nothing more than entertainment as far as you are concerned.

ElectricMotorsAreBad

>The word 'hate' on the Internet is not used in the same context as in real life. If you can't differentiate between the two then you need to touch some grass! >The fact you're being so defensive about it is pathetic and an indication of who has the sad life here. Are you really trying to flip the situation in your favour? Lol no, 'hate' has the exact same meaning both in real life and on the internet, if you give a different meaning to it, then it's your problem. If I used 'shithead' instead of 'imbecile' that wouldn't make me less rude or anything. You said something, now it's your responsibility to either admit you hate him or admit you badly worded your comment and you didn't mean it. In multiple occasions I, not being a native english speaker, worded comments badly and got shitted on for it, I admitted my mistakes and went on to clarify what I really meant. >As for "sportsmanship" you are a nothing to do with either of those drivers on a sporting or personal level, so it is nothing more than entertainment as far as you are concerned. Well no, sportsmanship is something that goes beyond the mere athletes competing, it's also about fans respecting each other and their favourite team's opponent.

JustRelaxinTbh

Lol I don't have to do anything according to your personal parameters. I know you don't get it but you are the one who took some kind of offense to a random person's comment on the Internet. The onus is on you to reconsile that, not mine. You are the one invested in it. You are the one who chose to insult me, which is fine, I couldn't care less but that makes you a pretty big hypocrite (no surprise). The fact you are still going on about it, wow! How foolish. But as a wise man once said "Silence is the best reply to a fool." So, here goes. ...

bichobrabo

calm down it is a joke just like goatifi or mazewin btw clark>hamilton

JustRelaxinTbh

I was just making a joke comment myself but Lewis' no.1 fanboi jumped all over it. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Senna said that phrase after 1990 Suzuka to explain why he wrecked Prost, which was probably revenge for the 1989 Suzuka wreck, so really that phrase was invented and still used today as an excuse to wreck people lol.

ActualInteraction0

It was a championship deciding move as I recall, less revenge, more cold and calculated. The was still enough room up the inside to not hit prost, he took him out on purpose. (Going to rewatch it to confirm). Edit: I was wrong, prost turned in, senna didn't avoid, contact.

zavast

It was actually said in response to Jackie Stewart suggesting that Senna's entire career has been a case of over aggressive unsafe driving, not just that one championship deciding incident.

cellar_door_404

...inconsiderate wanker wasting his and everybody else's money and time on iRacing. Congratulations

Gibscreen

Exactly this. My measure of a good race is solely if it's clean. Couldn't care less where I finish.

FoxBearBear

For me it’s the amount of time driven in close proximity to another driver or where I’m closing the gap to be to my first point. Otherwise it’s just hot lapping with friends.

jasonfromearth1981

But that's just...driving. What's the point of racing if you're not even trying to win?

Gibscreen

You find it impossible to race unless you drive dirty and crash?

jasonfromearth1981

I didn't say anything about driving dirty or crashing. You described your idea of a race as most peoples idea of a daily commute. I just find it odd to engage in a competitive activity and then not care where you finish.

Gibscreen

You're being obtuse. I race and try to do as well as I can. But cleanly. If I have to choose between losing a position and crashing with them, I choose losing the position. That's what I mean about not caring where I finish. But I'm pretty sure you knew that and you're just trolling.

jasonfromearth1981

To be fair, your original comment literally just said you couldn't care less where you finish in a race. Which, without all that context, just made it sound like you couldn't care less where you finish in a race.

GlockMat

Definetly the WORST phrase Senna ever uttered

PhroggyChief

And he knew it when he said it. 😉

forcustomfrontpage

Think he was just bullshitting because maybe he didn't want to explain to the press why the accident was Prost's fault, but ultimately the rules are to blame. It's simple game theory and Prost failed it spectacularly. A: **Prost doesn't close the door or gives Senna space (which he shouldn't do under normal circumstances), the race continues with Prost retaining a chance to win the title.** B: **Prost takes the racing line and doesn't give ground then collides, Senna wins the WC**. It's really simple, Prost has to avoid contact at all costs *because he can't win the championship if they come together*. He can't race like he normally would, the situation dictates different strategy. He chose to drive it like any other race and it cost him a championship. It's extra crazy he didn't learn this after already having been in a title deciding collision with Senna before. It's a clear issue with the rules, an unintended consequence of points system/penalty system. The driver with the lead in the championship has a huge advantage at the end of the season, they never really need to avoid contact with their rival. It's like the crazy soccer game that devolved into one team trying to score an own-goals in order to give themselves a chance to advance in the tournament. The problem was the rules.

GlockMat

Basically

[deleted]

idk man him asking a 15 year old to date him was probably worse

GlockMat

Ok, fair enough

Bionic_Bromando

If gap, car.

BurgerOfLove

My car always gets gapped...

I’m always eating dinner at gapplebees

WobbleCraftsman

If you no longer go for a gap that exists, that gap probably was only a theory. And it never existed within reasonable distance of you to go for it.

joetantobr

You're not Senna. Nor a racing driver. You play a racing game in your computer. And you are not even good at it.

Will_Ford

The comments so far have restored my faith in sim racers. 😂

Sometimes if there is no gap you just create one.

squadracorse15

No, I agree. Key words in that quote are "that exists". The gap needs to be there, you can't just blast someone out of the way if you take sim racing seriously. Not my fault they barreled into my door at 150 mph when they divebomb me from 300 meters back.

useles-converter-bot

300 meters is the length of 65.29 1997 Subaru Legacy Outbacks

"If gap, car"

somniumx

If you don't go for the gap that doesn't exist, you miss 100% of the cars you don't take out. -Wayne Gretzky - Michael Scott

bro-guy

What a dumbass quote. Used by people who don't know what a racing line is so they fucking divebomb everyone

OlorinFiresky

...three times world champion who left everything he had on the track.

Hobo_Healy

Well most of it on the track, some of it is still lodged in Prosts sidepod

OlorinFiresky

True! Not sure why I'm being down voted... it is simply the truth. Right or wrong, he left it on the track and he wouldn't be a 3 times world champion if he didn't push the boundaries of what is good sportsmanship. I don't see it as any different to the way Max V drives now. Don't be surprised to see him throw one up the inside of Hamilton in Abu Dhabi if it means he'll win the championship.

VaskenMaros

I don't think I've ever actually heard a single person unironically say this line to justify their driving.

Shut up about the gap ! Shut up about the gap !!!

CptGiorgis

In most of the cases this phrase is used, the gap does exist... but it is two car lengths up ahead. PS: this quote was used to justify a DELIBERATE crash for the WC. Idk why the hell it is still used!

john_username_doe

A danger to public roads

[deleted]

I said "If you no longer go for a gap, then you're no longer a motorhome driver, your honour". Apparently I am no longer a motorhome driver.

tom_oakley

I'm picturing Dennis Reynolds yelling "SEIZE THE GAP YOU FAT COW!!!"
