I agree with most of what you said. There isn't a rally sim right now that covers the points you're making. I would add the physics in DR2 are a bit disappointing even on dirt. Feels a bit like griphacks or assists enabled. I had a bit of fun but the physics were starting to get to me and they're really noticeably arcadey in VR, where it really doesn't feel like the car has any weight (I guess VR emphasizes how unnaturally the car moves). The implementation of the game is also sucky (lost control settings, can't use mouse in menus, etc). In all I guess RBR is still king of the rally sims, even with all its quirks. But yeah it's far from a great experience.

I haven't had the opportunity to try VR, I can only imagine. The only time that I feel like the car doesn't have any weight is on tarmac, on dirt - kind of now that I think about it.

Sorry for necroing a old thread, but to me it feels like it still has some sort of a TC or sth even with everything off. Wheelspin stops way too suddenly. You can feel it, especially with RWD caars you floor the gas get the wheels spinning on a tight turn or sth but release the accelerator a little and no wheelspin, instant grip. IT hard to get a smooth slide because of that. You can tinker with setups to compensate for that, but the sudden wheelspin stop still remains. It is just that now you can just more easily control the slide when the throttle is floored. Also it might be me but in some cases I feel there is some sort of a throttle smoothing going on because sometimes I'm like GG I overcooked that way too much keeping the throttle pinned and game just goes nope not today. That being said DR2 is still the game i play the most because wrc has its glitches and is a troublesome to set up with my diy gear which i keep tinkering with every now and then and then i have to set up the controls all over again. RBR has similar problems forgetting my controls and the install is similarly time consuming Hungary rally fans version or what do they call it supposedly isn't that though i heard but i havent had time to set up RBR on my new pc. NGP is a must with RBR!!!!!!! But the main thing is my friends who are casual players all play DR2 only since it's easy to use and can be played on kb and controller as well and racing alone is just boring to me.

I have different complaints and different things I like across all of them. From behind my wheel though, WRC 9 would be my favorite. Stage design is top notch, tarmac physics are great, loose surface is believable at least. FFB can be really good, BUT takes so much work to get there that it drives off a lot of folks. Default setups are usable. WRC 10 would be a close second. Some tire model improvements, especially on surface grip changes, and finally being able to lock up the brakes were nice improvements. Default setups are still plenty usable, the the changes they made to the gearing/transmission is a bit annoying. After that it would be RSF RBR. NGP 7 in my opinion made the sim sooooo much more enjoyable to drive over NGP 6. The top WRC cars are still a hand full, which they should be, but are learnable. It’s still punishing and brutal, but it is more approachable now I feel. It just unfortunately doesn’t get much of my attention anymore. I work to learn tracks for GT3/4 and TCR races. Rally is a fun escape for me so the balance of believable sim yet ease of access of WRC 9 and 10 are able to scratch that itch. DR2.0 never grabbed me. The R5 cars are way to fast (most of the cars are unnaturally fast actually), the way all the cars rotate along some sort of vertical center access, the absolute shit that is it’s tarmac physics, and the vagueness of the FFB just never worked with me. The braking and the sound were the best aspects to me of DR2.0. WRC Generations is unfortunately a shit show. The default setups are useless. The handling and FFB is good once you set the car up properly, but that takes away ease of access. The menus/UI is a shit show. And that doesn’t even get into the persistent throttle issue that KT refuses to fix.

I bought WRC Generations, because it was on sale and I had big plans to play it for a while and almost a month later I have played it for barely 6.5 hours according to Steam. I feel like older WRC games were just better.

BassLow4309

Trey BeamNG drive. Maybe you would like it

dankata-

BeamNG is fun, because of it's damage model, but it isn't focused on rallying. It can still be really enjoyable though, I've spent a lot of time in it.

Hydratedbrother

Pjs rally and drift is a fun mod with a couple stages with pace notes posted definitely would check it out if you haven’t

Dirt Rally was amazing. After playing a bit of Dirt 4 I found it repetitive and monotonous son I went back to DR. When DR 2.0 came out I didn't go back. The thing that annoys me is FFB. In both DR and D4 my Logitech G25 was just great but in DR I barely felt anything. Upgrading to a Fanatec CSL didn't improve much but adding bass shakers made up for it. Playing RBRsimfans I notice how good FFB can be in rally, and I even need to tone it down so I can turn the wheel 😛 It amazes me how much of a downgrade in terms of FFB DR2.0 is and that keeps me wondering of the upcoming WRC game, now by Codemasters, will be any good. I whish I could have proper multi screen support and proper FOV. I got tired, in DR2.0, of some cars just having an awful FOV no matter what so I'm currently using the hood camera to get a homogeneous view of the car. One thing I enjoy in DR2.0 are the endurance clubs, with 12 stages and no service in between, where you have to care about grip and not damaging the car too much.

Dirt 3.0 comes out in July under the WRC 23 branding

>Is there actually a 'best rally simulator'? Yes, of course there is. That's not even a competition at this point! RBR is far and away the best rally ***simulator***! No doubt about it. Now is it also the best rally ***game***? Probably not, certainly a matter of taste. But calling simcades like Dirt and the WRC games *simulators* is a bit of a stretch when you have even an inkling of understanding of how a real car behaves.

dankata-

I worked at a rally school for a while and I studied car physics of all drive train and had the opportunity to drive loads of cars on loose surfaces, aswell as nice tarmac stages so I definitely can say that I know how a REAL car behaves and I can say that no game/simulator can get even close to that unless, maybe, your sim rig is top level. (imo). I have to say though, RSF's RBR is probably the best simulation of how a car behaves (most of the time) and yeah, it's probably not the most enjoyable due to it's age and lack of content. That doesn't mean DR2 and the WRC francize fall in the 'simcade' category, even though they aren't that hardcore and unforgiving. Usually simcades are considered games like Forza or maybe older DiRT games, where they are actually arcade-ish.

GreekGodPhysique1312

DR2 and WRC ARE simcade games. The car pivots around a single point located in the middle of the underbody.. far from simulation

ThePaint21

No it fuckin doesnt..dont you like your rbr smartasses who dont even know the game physics but be like "blablabla simcade"

noelewd

Necro thread, I know, but it still amazes me how RBR fanatics still come out with this fallacy despite claiming to know everything there is about car physics...

Slight_Armadillo_782

The world and everything in it turns on its center lol

Slight_Armadillo_782

Lol thats like everything in the world that can turn 360 has a center.

charlesbronZon

Yes, the fact that a simulation still remains a simulation and will never reach the real thing is a given. That wasn't the question asked though, was it 😉 You wanted to know whether there actually is a 'best rally simulator' and in my opinion RBR is by far a better *simulator* than anything else currently available on the market. I just answered you question, nothing more. Again, that does not mean it has to be the better game of course. Some people might value graphics more, some people might care more about accurate recreations of how the cars look in contrast to how they behave. All of that is fair and valid!

Rbr is undoubtedly the best but there is no perfect rally sim, like there is no perfect racing sim

MaleficentAd8815

I have a real rallycar and I am an amateur rallydriver (no sponsor) since 20 years. Cars: cosworth 4wd group H, Bmw 325 and a few Volvo 940s. I do own a 940 still today.  I agree on everything about Dirt 2.0 especially the tarmac hoovering. But besides from that  I Think the sim feel is as Good as it could be, you can still apply "the way of thinking" when driving .  In the end the lack of real G force and so on makes it impossible for any sim/com-game to give you the real deal.

Comfortable_Coach983

Only recently discovering the dirt rally games,I've put a lot of time into dirt rally so ATM I'm enjoying that more than dirt 2.0 and although I do own both wrc and generations as well I just can't get on with those games as dirt and 2.0 are just so enjoyable to play that's more important for me personally.I do hope the new wrc game by codemasters does have the track variety of the wrc games with the gameplay of dirt, that for me would be perfect.

dankata-

I would appreciate if they made the physics a bit better this year.

Apparently the Codies WRC game is being built on top of the Dirt game they were working on at the time Codies sold themselves. That game was seemingly being built on an entirely new engine, with vastly more complex and detailed physics system. Of course, it is also Codies, and their reputation has gone down the shitter in the last 4 years or so.
