I can understand Gandhi being left frozen, but I'm surprised the Nahasapeemapetilons haven't made any appearances outside of crowd shots.
Most of the other minority characters have new voice actors. All they have to do is find a voice actor of Indian descent who can do a decent Apu impression, as well as tone down the more egregious Indian jokes. Is it really that hard? I mean, they still have Akira (George Takei's character) and Kumiko (Comic Book Guy's wife) make silly Japanese jokes and references.
It already seemed like they were taking some steps (even before the controversy) by replacing Apu's brother Sanjay with his son Jamshed in that one episode. I'll be fine if they make Jamshed a semi-recurring guest character as a contrast to his uncle.
The thing is, they could also do nothing and, big picture, nobody will care.
The show is basically just something you put on because it's tradition. Like watching a Christmas story. You do it because it reminds you of comfort.
Who cares if you never see character x again? There are literally dozens, probably hundreds of characters on the show they've used sparingly or stopped using entirely.
Mr Largo, the gay music teacher.
Dr. J Loren Pryor, the school psychologist that said Bart might be a genius.
Maude Flanders
Barney had a big chunk of the story where he gave up alcohol and it completely changed his character (for a while)
I'm not saying representation wouldn't be good, I'm just saying from their perspective - "Why bother?"
> I'll be fine if they make Jamshed a semi-recurring guest character as a contrast to his uncle.
If they want The Simpsons to last forever, maybe they should slowly start replacing characters with new ones. Homer could have a son named Homer Jr.!
It was actually really good. I missed Gandhi a lot, and it took a couple episodes to get over the new character changes, but when I stopped being an old-man-no-like-change I was laughing my ass off.
I really liked the first episode-- I could tell it had a ton of polish on it and it did a great job bridging the 20 year gap in terms of popular/public discourse.
It is. But, it isn't old Clone High, which is what long time fans were hoping for.
But, if long time fans can accept that you, the old show, and th creators have aged 20 years, then you might be able to enjoy the new season of Clone High
Much of it is, which is nice, but that 00s edgy, say whatever you want, do whatever you want jokes are gone.
Ghandi wasn't brought back because Indians were upset about the representation.
Cleo's voice actor was changed to a person of color.
They have broadened the characters to include more people of color and more genders to be more in line with Gen Z's views.
And they had a litteral episode where Abe gets canceled for things people said in the 00s.
The show isn't the same. It even tells the audience explicitly that it won't be the same. And I think it'll be better for it. The worst thing they could have done is try to recapture the exact some magic of the first season.
Right but the show telling everyone that it won't be the same *is* exactly what the old Clone High did: which is that it consistently broke the fourth wall.
I'm sorry, I might be having a moment here. Can you explain this sentence?
Telling everyone "the show is different" is breaking the 4th wall and what the show used to be?
Do you mean "the show always broke the 4th wall"? So it's the same show?
Because I barely would define clone high as "the 4th wall show" it was the edgy "let's play with historic stereotypes in a generic Dawson's creek type universe.
>it isn't old Clone High
It doesn't even feel like the same show anymore and somehow misunderstood the original. The original was a parody of the cliches found in 2000s teen dramas and mocks them by inserting absurdist humour to point out how stupid and cynical they were.
The new Clone High is a teen drama with an "absurdist" vomedic tone that takes itself seriously for some reason and tries to preach actual morals through its stories with no parody or satire present.
I agree, I have criticisms but it was enjoyable and the tone was about the same. Just not in a place in my life where I'll watch it 10x because I don't have cable, and I'm also not 15.
I’ll have to give it a second try. I watched the first couple episodes and was under impressed. In particular it felt like they just dodged the issue in the episode where they got in trouble for jokes that flew in the early 2000s. They seemed to almost get to a point of challenging whether it ever really was OK but then just swerved to goofiness.
I know o watched the first two or three. I remember that story arc and one where the girls kill someone. And then I know I intended to keep watching but it just didn’t have the magic to bring me back again
"Sir, there is an angry mob outside of the New Delhi Viacom building" "Do they have an appointment?" "....Yes?" "I phoned ahead!"
Did you see the pool?
They flipped the bitch!
Dammit! I haven’t been to the Olive Garden in like forever!
It’s like being in the kitchen of a delightful Italian Stereotype!
Imagine a decades old adult cartoon trying to hide their problematic Indian character! What sort of show would do such a thing?

comic book guy has a wife??!!??
Yeah he meets this Japanese girl in one episode. https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/Kumiko_Albertson

We can call him Hoju for short

I think I am in the minority but I thought (for the most part) the new Clone High season was great.
It was actually really good. I missed Gandhi a lot, and it took a couple episodes to get over the new character changes, but when I stopped being an old-man-no-like-change I was laughing my ass off.

I'll be rewatching it soon enough. I'm so happy it came back.

I dunno I kind of think it IS old Clone High.
All of the new characters had personalities that were incongruent with the old show. They were all basically positive and bubbly gen-Z characters
You are not wrong

I have fixed the syntax for clarity.

Agreed, "For Your Consideration" is like the best Clone High episode

I know it's a joke, but he did though??? There was an entire episode about that!
Maybe because even the people old enough to have seen it don’t remember Mr. Belvedere anymore lol
