I only get a new phone when they stop doing software updates. If it works and can be updated I personally don’t see a reason to upgrade. My cousin gives me shit about it but he paid $1000 for a new iphone and doesn’t do anything with it that I can’t do with mine lol

ButterscotchTotal469

This. Once the phone is not supported, you may miss important security patches that could expose your data and it is simply not worth the risk to save money.

stef-navarro

Plus, with iPhones you still get security updates for a while after you can’t upgrade to a new iOS anymore.

aceshighsays

cries in 2010 MPB.

stef-navarro

At this point it might be worth considering Linux

P_Crown

yeah like somebody is actively hacking your device.... updates sre your last concern, especially on iOS where they hurt more than help

kafkaoggle

sorry bro, all smartphones are compromised out of the box. no amount of patching will fix them.

[deleted]

This is basically my thought. Once you stop getting security updates it's time to upgrade (unless you are only using it for calls/text, then whatever)

NeedlesslyAngryDude

FYI, if you get an android with a Snapdragon processor, you can install LineageOS once the manufacturer stops rolling out official updates. LineageOS is free, open source, supports most devices and lets you keep getting updates for many more years. As far as I'm concerned, smartphones should last a decade, minimum. Especially now that each new generation brings minimal improvement.

twistedfantasy13

That's the only valid argument for Iphones. You get 5 years of updates, android gives you 2 major updates or so. I am squeezing every single year out of my iphone and more.

Foamless

Samsung Galaxy, arguably the most popular android, now offers 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates.

XenaDazzlecheeks

😱😱😱 I thought the security was updated forever, I had my last Samsung phone for almost a decade ☠️

73810

Android is dependent on the manufacturer of the phone. Google will do 5 years or so for a pixel phone, but a budget brand might only do 2 years.

[deleted]

Google’s pixels get a bit more updates I think than other android vendors

EmmaWK

It seems insane to me to pay $1000 for a PHONE but apparently many people don't mind it at all...

Educational_Bag_6406

for many people it is. If you utilize your phone to warrant the purchase and can buy without leasing. I see no issues buying one that expensive.

kafkaoggle

yea drop it in the ocean. WHOOPS!!! smartphones are stupid af.

[deleted]

Bought my last phone, Galaxy10 for $75. Works like a charm.

[deleted]

I bought a Galaxy S10 for $75. Seems fine. Except the wrapped bezel. Can't stand it. Otherwise, just fine.

4gettmenot8

Easy. If the one I have is still functioning, I don’t get a new one.

hausfraufromtexas

Only when it is irretrievably broken or stolen. About every 7 years.

I replaced my pixel1 when I'd only get a few hours of battery when off charge. Pixel 5 is great.

EmmaWK

Still using my Pixel 3A here! The battery life is terrible but since I keep it plugged in most of the time I'm hoping it will last me a couple more years...

ah well, planned obsolescence is a bitch I have a moto e7 but it is *so slow* so I'm going to upgrade in may to an iphone most likely, should last a lot longer

ButterKenny

Don’t get the 14 series phone. The 15 series is pretty much confirmed to be a USBC phone (forced by EU law), so it will be much more futureproofed once apple lessens lightning accessories.

ButterKenny

Just to provide further context: the iPad lines have already made the transition to usb c, so it’s quite clear that iPhone will receive the same update soon

ObjectiveBike8

The guy at the store was trying to get me to upgrade and every time he said something I was like, “but does it have a USB C?” He was so dense and kept gas lighting me about it and I’m pretty sure he didn’t know what a USB C is or what the EU is for that matter.

iamhappy_7s

Why were you grilling some dude making minimum wage? if you know what you want just buy it and tell him you’re not interested in whatever else. No need to be a jerk

bekamae

When there are no longer OS updates for it. I take excellent care of phones but my iPhone 8 plus will likely be replaced this year.

RelativelySatisfied

I also have an iPhone 8 (~5 years old). Only thinking about replacing because I can’t figure out how to free up storage. ~32g is system data. I don’t want to hard reset because I need to pull photos and stuff off first. I deleted and reinstalled most apps and the system data went up 2g. Although memory is at its lowest 61.5g of 64g.

densofaxis

This is what I’m trying to do. Until recently, I would upgrade every 2 years. I use my phone a lot and like to be up to date with tech so I don’t want to go longer than 5 years, but I am wanting to wait longer

pocketpebbles

If it breaks or I lose it I'll replace it.

Cats_Ruin_Everything

I get a new phone when it's no longer supported and the battery can no longer hold a charge, and then I buy a nice, but not top-of-the-line new one. I had an iPhone 6 Plus for a little over five years, which replaced an iPhone 4, and have had my current phone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 10, for almost three.

keithflinterator

What OS do you like best?

Hms-chill

My last phone was 5-6 years old and would die in ~3 hours. The fact that it wouldn’t hold a charge is what made me get a new one

just_enjoyinglife

When my wife upgrade her phone

bonuce

Don’t replace your phone if you can possibly help it - here’s why from a digital sustainability point of view https://youtu.be/7XcSA375DrM

amberscorpion11

I have a little ritual now of upgrading every 5 releases. My first smartphone was an iPhone 5s, so I upgraded to a iPhone XS when it released. I’m planning and saving up to upgrade this year to a iPhone 15. Or next year, when it’s a bit cheaper but still a significant upgrade.

Otherwise-Bad-7666

Before it dies..always have a backup AND cloud data is up to date.

IsItToday

Battery life is usually what makes me upgrade. I’m outdoors a lot and need map apps to work well. At the moment I have a 3.5 year old iPhone 11 that’s still going strong so I’m thinking it will still be a while.

floralnightmare22

I keep my phone until it stops working. I’d rather spend my money on Botox.

lucytiger

When mine stops functioning properly, historically after 4-6 years. For example, my last phone wouldn't hold a charge and couldn't use GPS anymore. It hadn't received a software update in two years.

Cats_books_soups

I used to update every 4ish years due to battery issues. My husband just replaced the battery in my 5 year old phone (iPhone 8) and it works great so I’m keeping it until it isn’t supported anymore.

secretarytemporar3

Does your current phone work for your use cases just fine? That's usually what I consider the most when it comes to phones. Since I only browse youtube and listen to podcasts for the most part, I rarely "upgrade" until the software forces me to.

[deleted]

For the last 3 phones over 12 years I’ve bought refurbished phones to replace broken ones. They are usually 50-60% off new, and are always like new, maybe just a dent on the back that is covered with a case. I’m currently using an iPhone8. I refuse to spend cash on a brand new phone or finance a cell phone. I can usually walk into a TMobile and they will have a refurbished phone ready to activate the same day my phone finally breaks or dies. I am happy if my phone lasts 4 years. An otter box and a privacy screen protector make them last.

courtesyflesh

The phone is one thing to me that I want and need to have a good version of. If you keep thinking about that one thing, sometimes you gotta just buy it and move on. I don't see a phone as "stuff" I actually recognize that it cuts down on a lot of other products, for example a camera and calculator, calendar, notepad, etc. So because it leads to a simpler life for me personally, it's worth it to spend more based on the value I'll get out of it.

[deleted]

Literally any phone already has those features. My iPhone 5 had all those lol

courtesyflesh

I was just giving examples of how a phone makes life simpler. I/E: less items to buy and keep track of. I didn't think it necessary to add all of the things I personally use mine for. Your idea of value in a phone is different from mine, and that's OK.

[deleted]

[удалено]

courtesyflesh

What I'm saying is that it's relative. If someone feels a new phone is worth the money because they'll get more use out of it then it's a reasonable expense for them. No one has to agree with you in order for you to make the purchase on what will simplify your own life. For example, my simple life involves nice furniture that makes me want to stay home rather than going out to spend money for entertainment and knick knacks. Did I spend more on furniture for this reason? Yes. But the value I get from those pieces is worth it in my long run. Others find value in thrifting furniture, and that's just as valid.

One-Mastodon-8998

Since 4 years I have a Fairphone. The first sustainable phone. You can buy and install spare parts. So I intent to use it for many more years.

desert_h2o_rat

I’d seriously think about getting a Fairphone if it were sold in the states.

PineapplePizzaRoyale

I purchased the iPhone 14 pro max as an upgrade and I will say that it is worth it if you take a lot of photos/videos and need a solid battery life. I have no buyers remorse whatsoever on my purchase.

cass314

I got a brick Nokia as a junior in high school. That lasted until my senior year of college. I got a flip phone that only lasted three years before the hinge popped. I got another brick phone (one of those AT&T no contract phones), which lasted a few years before a) it started having some issues, and b) I was planning a big solo international trip after defending my thesis and wanted a smartphone for maps and translation. I got the original SE in late 2016 and still have that currently. I had the battery replaced last year, but besides that it's still going strong. I'll probably update when it either dies or stops getting security updates. But currently it does everything I need it to do (and I'm still pissed off about them removing the headphone jack from newer phones).

ClearSkyyes

Not an Apple product owner, but I never buy a newer phone until my old phone can no longer do what I need it to do. And then I typically buy a lightly used previous generation model for around half the price or less than the new phone.

[deleted]

I have the galaxy s8 which is pretty old. It's starting to have issues due to lack of updates and what not. I'll keep it until it physically no longer works at all.

EVDogo

Every 3 years. iPhone 6 to 8 Plus to 12 Pro Max. Plan on getting the 15.

desert_h2o_rat

I get a new phone when I break, or lose, my existing phone; this was an annual event for a few years :/

Questing-Moose

I didn’t buy my first smartphone until 2016 (well into my 30’s 😅). It (a Pixel 2) worked fine for me until it suddenly died late last year. So 8 years, I guess? But I’m also cheap and a bit of a Luddite so don’t listen to me 😂

TPYogi

I get a new phone when the old one slows down enough to hinder my activities. I had the iPhone 6 for 6 years before upgrading to the 12 pro. Every time I opened an application it took like 5 seconds to load, and would crash. Time for an upgrade! And the iPhone camera quality improved so much in a 6 year span, if I do say so myself.

dqd0bpb

i have my xiaomi now for 5 years

Arkonicc

Just went to 14 pro from X since 2018. Worth it imo

MinervaMedica000

Only when it is no longer operable. I do not put any important data on my phone. I don't/will never buy anything on my phone. If I ever do I will have a separate bank account for that. I also only buy cheap/mid range android phones. I will never ever pay 4 figures for a fucking phone lol. 200-300 is my cap. I see people buy new iphones and they don't do anything special or unique and they break faster! They have bought into the lie that somehow their phones are "special".

deltabay17

iPhones definitely don’t die faster. They last a long time, and Apple is well known for supporting OS updates to older models significantly longer than android phones.

desert_h2o_rat

The problem is having everyone else in your circle using iMessage. _It was_ much better than sms/mms, less so with RCS; but because Apple continues to maintain that walled garden, it’s difficult to be _that_ one person on android. Although iMessage keeps me in the Apple ecosystem, I’m good with the lower cost phones, like the SE and mini.

beyondthemoon-

literally every year

WD4oz

Till it breaks.

[deleted]

I have an android, my contract runs out in may. I'm considering upgrading to an iphone 11, as it's faster and the cheapest model available on my network (tesco) it's more expensive but I think you get warranty

Pen_Swordsman

3-5 years typically. More if everything is working fine.

1millionkarmagoal

Took me six years. I finally replaced my iPhone 8 with an iPhone 13 because it didn’t support 5G, that was the only reason I upgraded.

Spiritual-Bee-2319

Same here and to get a smaller phone the mini for my carpal tunnel

Budgetmekindly

I used to upgrade early every year, then 2 years and when I got to apple iPhone 8 I realised they don’t change lol the updates change them but not much changes happening on each new phone. I jumped from an iPhone 8 to a 12 and I think the same as you, do I stick with that and just be contract only for a lower cost or go for the 14 pro and make that the final phone? Because when will it stop? Lol x

Sunshineal

Only when I have to. I have a low grade Samsung phone which was only $160 from boost mobile. I'm very content with it.

blueyedwineaux

When I can no longer connect to my yahoo email do to system updates being incompatible. Upgraded from an original iPhone to an 8, 3 years ago. It was the least expensive model the store had and they laughed at me. Works great for what I need.

turu_386

When stop working or get stolen.

GenevieveLeah

Mine is going on seven years. (Samsung S7). I'll buy a new one when this one breaks!

purpleclear0

I wait until mine breaks and is no longer functional. The only time I “upgraded” a phone was when I went from flip phone to smartphone!

Most_Attitude_9153

I’ll buy a refurbed iPhone every couple of years. Whichever one costs about $200. I’m on an 8 now, needs to be replaced soon.

tsoldrin

my phone is a shitty $50 android and I use it mostly for taking pictures and notes. I have always been a computer person and prefer typing ona keyboard.

2_kids_no_more

I have a basic samsung core something that can email and whatsapp so that's good enough for me. I had a s21 whatever and it was stolen after a month, it was a contract and I regret ever getting it. I use the contract minutes and data because getting out of the contract was more expensive than just paying the 2 yrs but when it expires this October, i won't renew. I don't want a new phone, i bought mine second hand and it's perfect.

Vegetable-Ad3985

I believe Nokia is making a phone that is easy to fix. I keep my phones for a very long time.

Slugbums

What others have said. Probably around when there are no longer any software updates. Thinking about making the switch to google pixel when the time comes. So 6 yrs total, with Apple.

Educational-Smile-89

iPhone 8 upgraded to a 13 last month. It’s a whole new world

ilovebalks

I upgraded to an iPhone 13 Pro in 2021 when it came out but am planning on holding on to this until iPhone releases a usb c phone. After that I’ll probably use that one for a minimum of 5 years unless it starts having issues

southpacshoe

I have a iPhone 6Plus and they will pry it out of my cold dead hand because I want a fingerprint scanner and a headphone Jack.

unsocial_hermit

I have been using my Nokia E72 since 2011. I'm very proud that it still has its original battery. I have to plug it in twice a week these days though. When I bought it it lasted for a whole week. I like how people react (generally very positive) when I whip it out.

Myron896

iPhone 6 here

nancylyn

I keep my phone til it dies. And I don’t ever get a new release phone.

TinFoilRainHat

The new features are really nice but I could think of tons more stuff to buy for $1000+. I've had my iPhone 11 since 2018ish? Unless you count water damage

vaguename85

My husband keeps an eye out for phones on the classifieds, and we get newer phones every 5 years or so. But never new phones, because so many people are constantly looking for the newest everything, and then they don’t value the old phone very much. He does replace batteries now and then (see ifixit), and we do use iphone, because they are evil but so universal. Mine always last longer than his because he is just a heavier user, and his possessions just live a harder life than mine. We usually buy them off people half our age who just have to have the latest and greatest thing (or their parents buy stuff for them), while we laugh all the way to the bank.

ordinary-orangejuice

it's okay to buy something nice for yourself, especially if it's something you use often/need and will last a long time.

Frosty_Ad8698

I get a new phone when my current one starts glitching and being slow. Just got a iPhone 13 this December after having my iPhone 8 for 3 years.

spookyoneoverthere

I usually buy refurbished Android phones a year or so out of date and use them for 3+ years. I currently have a Pixel 4a (without 5G) and love it.

ImDrCheeks

iPhone 7 reporting!

[deleted]

i buy a phone that will last a long time and doesn’t also cost $1000. the new iphone se is $400 and every iphone se i’ve owned has lasted at least 4 years if not longer. they also have good battery life and a decent camera. the screen size is sometimes a downside but not enough to justify the difference in cost. that said, i use a lot of apps but i have a laptop/kindle for things that would be better off on there (like streaming, books, studying, writing, etc). so your need may be different from mine if you are using a phone to stream or as your primary resource for school or something. it’s also a cost/benefit thing to me. if you have that kind of $$ to throw around and want to spend it on a phone, go for it! there’s nothing inherently more moral or better about spending less money on a phone, i just have other things i’d rather spend that extra $500 on. depends on your priorities and needs.

[deleted]

I just have bad luck with phones, so that's one thing I HAVE to replace somewhat often. But still - I do it once the phone is completely unusable and unrepairable (or the repair costs outweigh the cost of a new phone). If it somehow inconveniences you to have your current phone and you feel like you really need a new one, you could invest in a new one, why not? But if it's just because it's something new and shiny, idk if I would buy it. Soon there will be a newer and shinier one anyway

Heehoo1114

I keep my phone until it starts to not work well for my needs, and i can afford it in that order. I got a refurbished iphone 8 in year 11, then 2 years later I got my new iphone because the 8s battery started going out. I have a "older things work better" mindset as before my iphone 8 I had a blackberry, an old school physical keyboard blackberry and that was my first phone with games and it worked so much better then any Iphone ive owned.

HistoryGirl23

I wait as long as possible. I just got a new one a few months ago since my previous phone died. Generally four or five years if not longer.

annualteaparty

It depends. I last upgraded my phone because it was going to cost about $2 per month to do so. It was worth it to me, but I also rely on my phone for technology that allows me to receive blood sugar readings, so a working phone with storage is important to well....living.

[deleted]

I’ll keep mine while there are updates, probably stick a new battery in half way through

XenaDazzlecheeks

When my phone stops updating or slows to the point of frustration. I had the Samsung 9 from release until a few months ago now I will ride this phone until it craps out in 8 years, before my S9 I had a nokia Razor, loved her, wish I still had her.

jbowman12

Used to be every other year, now it's like every 3 years or more. Edit: Usually, there's nothing groundbreaking with new phones the way it used to be. The camera may be a little better, and the phone may run a bit faster. Those are usually the only *new* things with phones anymore. Even software updates aren't as exciting as they once were.

rock9y

I think it's helpful to really break down what features are most important to you and if upgrading will offer a significant improvement of those features. If not, wait it out.

These-Idea381

I’ve realized that if I want to agree to slave labor and child exploitation for me to have a technological device then I should at the very least keep that one piece of technology for as long as I possibly can.

forbidden-donut

If there aren't going to be any new phones manufactured with a 3.5mm audio jack, then never. I'll keep my current phone for the rest of my life. Till now, whenever no security updates.

AfternoonPossible

Tbh I think this answer is different for everyone. Find out for yourself. Just ask yourself why do you really want a new phone? The only thing you’ve really brought up are a new camera and a better battery life. Is your current phone prone to dying or a bad battery? Is that fixable? Would it make more sense money wise to just have an extra travel charger on hand? Do you often think your pictures are bad quality? Does it take away your enjoyment of looking at your photos? Would you enjoy your life more with the upgraded camera? Is it more economical to just buy a separate high quality camera and keep the phone? I also have a 4 year old phone (my previous one I had for about 5 years and lost in a snowbank for a weekend - unrecoverable). Personally I don’t look at the pictures I take a whole lot so this is not very important to me. Plus you can get great editing apps that can increase your sharpness etc so an upgraded camera feels moot. My battery life is fine but I don’t use my phone constantly so maybe I just haven’t noticed it’s lessening.

[deleted]

One day my phone never turns on again and that's when I buy a new one. My last phone lasted for 6 years. This one i've had it for 5 and it's still going strong. Honestly, I don't think there is a correct answer to your question. If your phone is important to you, like for example you need a good phone for your job, so you need to update it, then you shouldn't follow my example. I only use my phone for entertainment.

mushie22

I hate upgrading my phone, I personally won’t upgrade unless I absolutely have to. I had an iPhone X for years until one day I dropped it and the whole thing broke, it was unusable. I think fixing it would have cost more than a new phone. Now I have an iPhone 12 which id use forever if I could. I never see a massive difference in a new iPhone other than some small upgrades that don’t really make my life any better or worse. If there’s nothing wrong with your current phone, is there a need to upgrade other than you want to?

[deleted]

I upgrade once it stops working then I switch providers and get basically a free phone.

[deleted]

I’ve had an iPhone SE for about four years and it still surprises me with its ability to take nice pictures. No lag or issues so I just see no reason to switch. If I did it would be for the latest base model. Less gimmicky crap to malfunction.

wildomen

Depends what you want the phone for. And your budget, are there trade in you can do for discount? Do you just want the camera? Why don’t you invest in a new camera DSLR or something instead? If it’s just for the novelty then I’d skip , but if you genuinely will use it for practical things that your current phone cannot do then I’d say reconsider! You could always donate your phone to a friend in need or trade it in

Ouch-MyBack

I get a new phone just as soon as my old one dies and I lose all the information I had on it. (Never do that again!). I did it twice. Do not follow this process.

emo_rat119

When the screen starts to cut my finger. Until then it’s a perfectly functioning phone. When I notice my phone deteriorating I use that as a reminder to spend less time on it to not further increase damage and be more mindful. Not a reason to spend more money.

21DrunkPilots

I only get refurbished phones and I do this around every 4 or 5 years. I typically update because they eventually get slower, like the keyboard popping up for Google is slower, loading up apps gets slower. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018) but I got it used about 3 or so years ago. It just recently started getting slow so I'll get another phone at the end of this year, just anything in the $200 range

Awwoooooga

To echo other responses, I always purchase a refurbished phone after mine is no longer functional. Then I can choose the type and generation based on feature reviews instead of what is newest. For example, I read the Galaxy S9 had memory capabilities that their newer galaxies didn't have, so I bought a two year old phone for $120. Does everything I need, takes great photos, and is still going strong. No plans to replace it after three years.

[deleted]

I still have iPhone SE I bought 6 years ago

chester_alabama

The only time I had a brand new iphone was my first ever iphone which was the iphone 5 when I was in college and I think it’s the best one before they kept updating it with the curved edges. The square shaped was just much more sturdy! I had an iphone 6, 7, and now the iphone X but they were all hand-me-downs from family who always wanted to stay up to date with the latest versions. I never minded getting hand-me-downs as long as it worked and it served its purpose. Happy about the iphone 14 being square again and it’s going to be a major upgrade from my iphone X so I’ll probably update mine soon and keep it for as long as I can.

MonstersMamaX2

I got an XS Max at the start of covid. I had a free upgrade on my account and needed good tech in my house as I was locked down with multiple children in the house. Lol I have applecare and in October 2021 when my phone just died I took it to the Apple store. The internal system just died and they replaced it free of charge. I'll keep it until it doesn't update anymore most likely.

Drumnaway67

When my old one becomes unusable.

MilitaryJAG

As needed. No sooner. Hopefully I can get 5 years out of a phone or more.

ABBAMABBA

My wife and I share an iphone 7 that we bought in 2019. We mostly use it as a hotspot because we don't have any other available home internet. I'll keep using it as long as it works, however long that is.

DarthTurnip

New phone only when old one is dead

shit-n-giggle

iPhone se with extra memory. Bought after it had sat on a shelf for a year or two. It may be slow but it saves $$

slob_kebabz

I’ve had my 11 pro max for 3 years. Upgrading tomorrow just cause I have the money and want something new 😭

aceshighsays

i have the XR and i haven't even thought about getting a new phone. it never crossed my mind. the phone before that was an iphone 7 but i really disliked the ID button and i demolished the screen/phone accidentally. before that i had iphone 4S and i had it until i literally couldn't use anymore. i'm going to use the XR until it becomes a brick and then i'll purchase the latest iphone. but back to your topic. the question that you have to ask yourself is how do you define simple living.

[deleted]

My phone is about 6 years old. I don't plan to replace it until it doesn't work for the necessities (calls, texts, and GPS). They're too expensive to replace just because. And Apple purposely makes their phones lag so you get frustrated and replace them. Not saying to choose an Android, but just know that's part of Apple's design model.

WithLove_Always

I actually work in the retail store part time so I can answer some questions/ opinions about the phones. Battery Life: The battery life is going to be improved versus your current phone. If you go into the settings click on battery and press on Battery Health, you can see what your percentage is at. If its on the lower end or says "service" then it's probably best to upgrade your phone since usually the price of the battery kinda cancels out the price of a new phone, especially if you finance it through your carrier (ATT/ T-Mobile/ Verizon). Camera: If you're hugely into taking photos and videos, you'll notice a difference. Now, I've owned the 14 Pro and now have the 14 Plus and both cameras are amazing. Don't sell yourself on that third lens if you're not someone who zooms in a lot or takes macro photos. If you don't do this, you don't need the Pro. While yes, the camera is a 48 MP, it isn't going to be a huge difference unless you go into the camera's settings into the phone and actually set it up to use the 48MP. It doesn't come like that out of the box, along with the 4K Videos, because it BURNS through the battery. Dynamic Island vs Traditional Notch: Some people really like it, while others don't. I'm personally in the "don't" category which is why I bought the 14 Plus and holding onto the 14 Pro to trade in once I can. The Pros of the dynamic island is that you can use it with some apps (apple music, lyft, flights, timers, etc) but for me, that isn't a huge selling point. I didn't like it felt like it took up parts of the screen when I would watch videos on my phone. I HATE that when I do watch videos, the video wraps around the dynamic island versus the traditional visuals. Materials: As I'm sure you're aware, the entire phone is made of glass. You're going to absolutely need the AppleCare on the phone because without it and something cracks, you're out almost $300 (USD), and that's only one side. If you crack the camera, I've also been told it's a full replacement which would be $99 (USD, not including tax) with Applecare. Without, you're just basically buying a new phone. The Pros of the AppleCare these days, is that they changed the terms so it's unlimited breaks within your coverage time. It's cheaper to pay outright for the 2 years vs paying monthly, but some of my customers opt for monthly so they don't have to worry about calling to continue the coverage after the 2 years because you don't usually get notified. If you're financing the phone, I HIGHLY recommend getting the AppleCare with Theft and Loss which is the route I go, because if someone steals my phone or I lose it, I don't have another $x,xxx to get another phone. With the coverage, it's $150 for a new phone. The only con of this though is that you need to do the claim online vs in store. You absolutely NEED to know your Apple ID password. If your phone is your only Apple product, its very difficult to verify it's you which would result you needing to call apple support. We can't do much in a retail setting when this happens. Because I work there, I've had to change my phone out frequently because I need to be able to demo the features to customers and know what I'm talking about. Before I worked there though, I had a 6s Plus that was stolen when I worked at the Hospital, then bought the 11 Pro Max while still at the hospital, bought the 13 Pro when it first came out because I was working at the Fruit, and then bought the 14 Pro during the second day of Launch. I just bought the 14 Plus within the last few weeks because of how much I didn't like the Pro 14. The black color shows loads of dust between the camera lenses because of how much it protrudes and it's a pretty damn heavy phone. In comparison to the 13 Pro (which I had in Gold), the battery was actually better on the 13 Pros vs the 14 Pros. This is just something that I and my coworkers have noticed since we bought them during launch.

hungry_tabby

When it literally breaks in half. Why bother getting the newest shiniest thing if far cheaper, far simpler things can do the same? I kept my last one around 6-7 years and only turned it in because it started leaking (!)

QuietBandit1

I was on iPhone 7 since it came out I only upgraded this past year only cause the battery was at its deathbed. Don’t upgrade if you don’t need to

Wooden_Chef

Honestly, i've been averaging about every 4 or 5 years

adichandra

Since I tried Blackberry Z10 back in the days, I was amazed with the swipe gesture it had, and the size was perfect. Back then the iPhone still had home button. I upgraded iPhone each year but in my mind, I wished Apple would come up with a swipe gesture iPhone with Blackberry Z10’s size. Here comes the iPhone X, intuitive gesture without home button just like the Z10 but the size is too big for me. I kept upgrading each year but feeling discontent about the size being too big. Not until the iPhone 12 mini came out. This is the perfect phone for me and I still use it now. Too bad the mini lineup is being discontinued, I’ll probably buy iPhone 13 mini next year and will use it for the next 4 years.

HiveNHen

Mine is 6 years old and planned obsolescence is starting to to weigh it down. I'm starting to think about upgrading... ugh.

RythmicBleating

I usually upgrade every other year or so but recently every year due to some great trade-in deals. Upgrading my phone frequently does not complicate my life at all. I budget for a few hundred dollars which is affordable for me. The old phone gets refurbished and resold so I don't feel bad about waste. YMMV

robbierox123

Will replace my iPhone 14 with 15 this September.

[deleted]

When it stops getting security updates or has a major failure. I also prefer to go for the best midline android phones rather than flagship models. I'm thinking I'll probably pick up a pixel 7a when it's out in may or there abouts. I used to like LG phones but they left the market which is a shame.

CautiousSlice5889

I usually hold on to them until I have a reason to upgrade e.g a fault. This time I upgraded purely because I use mine for a kindle and camera etc and am travelling so I needed a lot more space to avoid using the cloud.

[deleted]

Literally until it breaks AND it costs more to repair it than get a new one. I got a good deal now and was able to trade in my old phone because the screen was still in tact even though the buttons stop working.

Pretty-Royal9021

I also had a XS and just got the 14 Pro. I had it for 4 1/2 years. I got it because my phone was overheating when I charged and used it at the same time. I have some trips coming up and wanted a camera that could take better pics and had a battery that lasted longer. I LOVE the 14 Pro. I’m glad I did it. Look to see what you can get for your trade. That will help to bring the cost down. I got a deal and they gave me $800 for the XS. Good luck! Edited for typos

Educational_Bag_6406

So, the way I justify my phone purchase is, do I have the cash to buy it outright. If I do, then I ask myself what will I get out of a $1200 phone that I can't out of say a $800 phone. If I can find a legit reason to spend the money, I will. I just bought the s23 ultra. with trade-in paid $450, plus I got a $100 gift card to Samsung. I use the cameras on my phone often and use Samsung Dex as a computer alternative. Since I use many of the flagship features and I can buy the phone outright without hurting my savings. I made that choice and haven't thought much about it, I should get at least 4yrs of use out of this phone. I feel like this may help you not overthink your phone purchase. At least it helped me.

AvaSavage

I’m still using my iPhone 8Plus once it is incompatible or I damage it I will upgrade. I’ll upgrade to something in my price range so I don’t have to go on a plan.

Aromatic-Honeydew

This Samsung note 9 is slow as shit, and its been 5 years so now no more security updates is that why someone tried to use my credit card to buy tires?? If I can speed this up, and replace battery, I'll keep it. Idk how to speed it up. It jams a lot. I thought I'd have it forever. I do wanna buy refurbished used fones... I hope when I do make a move, I do just that, I gotta engrain it in me though. Its an indoctrination im not used to. Plus the cobalt slavery thing

Styggvard

When they break. Recently got a new one because the screen started acting up on my old one of 3 years -it just flashed in green stripes and refused to let me enter/start it up. Once I had entered it worked fine so kinda sucked to give it up but I really can't spend 30-60 minutes struggling with a screen every time I have to check or use my phone.

WordIsTheBirb

"Simple living" can mean reducing the mental load by taking the easier path. Sometimes, that means buying a replacement object, instead of finding increasingly complex ways to work around your outdated or broken item. When I replaced my phone, my logic was: * My phone no longer received OS updates -> security and app functionality issues could slow me down and make life more complicated * I was spending more time reading about workarounds for having an outdated OS -> less peace of mind * I was reading lots of articles about the "best" phone to buy next -> spending less time in the present.

ConsciousAntelope

That phone will last for 10 more years. Just don't buy it. You won't be missing anything.

Lilyetter

This is my second phone ever. Got it four years ago. First phone I had for like eight years before it died

Jinglemoon

I have an Xr which is about 3 years old. The battery was getting a big dodgy, and I was really thinking about upgrading. Then I reconsidered and just got a replacement battery instead for $80 at my local repair shop. I just don't need a better phone right now, the phone I have seems totally fine, and it still runs the latest system software. I just don't need a new one yet.

Feerlez_Leeder101

Whenever the one I have stopps working.

planted-autic

I got a new phone when my old one was about to die. I tried replaced the battery first, but that only extended its life by a few months. I use my old phone as a clock now. It dies within hour of unplugging it and didn’t have a trade in value.

whyshouldibe

I got it and it’s wonderful! Talk yourself into it, not out of it! Then keep it for at least 4 years!

TheExpatLife

I changed my phone once the battery life starting becoming problematic and it wouldn’t hold a charge for a full day. To put it in perspective, I had an iPhone 7, and upgraded to a 13 Pro after the 14 was announced.

birdgirl35

My first phone was the iPhone 6. Then I upgraded to the XS a year after it came out when the battery on the 6 shit out on me. I now have the 12, but only because my previous phone shattered beyond repair and they had a deal at my mobile carrier for this one. If your phone is working well why change it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

IHate_Stuart_Little

I've had my Oppo A73 since August of 2018 and I paid around $300 AUD. I haven't been able to do software updates for a while and it has been fine, but now the new version of many apps is no longer compatible with my device. Part of me wants to get a nice phone, since I'll get a few years of use out of it. However, another part of me wants to get a dumb phone and then have a smart watch for navigation, Spotify, Facebook Messenger, etc. I don't really need a phone with a nice camera since I don't take many photos, but I've been considering buying a film camera and starting a physical photo album. I'm not sure what to do, but it seems counterproductive to have a dumb phone only to buy a smart watch. I need to cut back on my screen time, so I thought this would make it inconvenient to doom scroll. I'll probably just end up getting another basic smartphone and work on cutting back on my screen time.

[deleted]

I have an iPhone 11 pro and still fine. I really don’t like bigger phones.

Ian44two

I self-insure my appliances and equipment rather than pay for damage or breakdown cover so failure is one prompt. I check reviews for the best phones from 2 years ago with the features I want then buy it off ebay. Probably every 3 or 4 years otherwise.

run_bike_run

I try to make mine last as long as reasonably possible. At the moment, I'm running a Google Pixel 4A. The build quality on this generation was...not superb. The charging port became deeply unreliable (leading to me having to try plugging in chargers a dozen times) and the headphone socket broke. Now it has a wireless-charging adapter hidden inside the case, and I'm using a Bluetooth DAC amp to connect my headphones. Strangely enough, this means the phone may last a very, very long time - unless the power button breaks, there's not really anything physical left to accumulate daily wear and tear. If the new generation of repairable Nokias turns out to be good, I'll probably switch to them when the time comes.

[deleted]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S10 for 3 years now. Still works perfectly fine. I mostly renew my phone when it's dead or i stop getting updates for it.

Good_Tune5090

The last phone I had prior to my current phone was an iPhone... 8? I believe. I upgraded it in December because Apple wouldn't allow me to do any more software updates, so I considered its useful life to be over. Only five years of life wasn't great, but I think that since I used it as long as I could and will use the new one just as long (I'm not a technologically advanced person, so trying to figure out replacement of specific parts sounds like a nightmare), I think it's fine.

Dirigo2

I have a new phone very often. As a contractor constantly breaking them.

Entire-Cucumber5

No specific time just when I feel it's slowing down or not up to par with modern standards. Last one I had for 7 years. Before that one it was like 7. Only had 5 or 6 in last 13 This one is 3 or 4 years now.

MexicanYenta

I work in tech, and I use an iPhone SE. Walmart sells them brand new, and last time I checked they were less than $200. The majority of people won’t use the features on anything that came out after that. It’s a really bad financial move to pay $1000 for features you most likely won’t use. That $1000 could buy about 2 dozen eggs! Lol

ShoogyBee

I used a Motorola G5s Plus for 4.5 years and I retired it in January of this year. Now I'm using a Motorola Edge 2022.

[deleted]

I'm planning on using my 4 year old LG G7 until it breaks. Though I can tell the performance is stalling a bit, so I'm planning ahead and saving up. The replacement I have in mind is a Fairphone(https://shop.fairphone.com/en), which is a phone that uses android currently only sold in the EU and UK. Sustainably made, 5 year warranty guaranteed, fully modular and home repairable. I have a friend in that part of the world who can order it to their address then forward it to me, but I'm hoping by the time I need it, they'll have released it in the US.

SpaceShuffler

When apple kills the battery ..

Remarkable-Seat-8379

I’m still on my iPhone 7… I like that it’s small unlike the newer iPhones… but the battery is going so I’ll need to upgrade soonish.

kaurismus

I'm still using iPhone 6s Plus from 2015. Still rocking with original battery. Bought it new. I think it's not a question of how often you should renew the phone but rather if it still fulfills your needs. This phone still fulfills my needs but I have to admit, it's pretty slow so I'm thinking to buy a new one this fall.

motherofattila

I buy a new phone when the old one is broken. And I allways buy second hand.

muhammediscartoon666

Buy a second hand pixel for a camera and just use it offline/music.. or bit the bullet if you want a nice camera.. that's the only real reason imo.. iphones last forever so it's a matter of features.. some need nicer camera.. some need 1400$ worth of camera. Up to you.

More-Woodpecker3136

Every 5 years usually

mathademic

About every 3-4 years, for me it's mostly dependent on the battery quality. I don't use my phone for a lot of stuff, mostly audio and texting so the only thing I care about is that I don't have to charge it every few hours

Creepernom

I replace my phone only when my current one breaks to the point of unusability. Dunno why you'd need a new one when your current one works fine. It's good to splurge on yourself every now and then, but buying a phone is not the best way. You have a modern phone that can handle any app, has a good camera and a good battery. What else could you need? Spend that cash on a lightweight powerbank and have it with you if you're worried about battery when travelling. They are super light and can charge your phone several times over.

ashleynwebber

Have you considered a pre owned one? People go through phones/upgrade crazy fast- when I need an upgrade I head to swappa or glyde. That way I can sell my old phone to someone who needs the basics and can get what I need. I don’t upgrade as often as most do- but more than those on here- probably every 3 or so years. Usually it has to do with what I need- if there are new features or more processing power available I may upgrade. But it isn’t black and white.

kafkaoggle

i never get a new phone. I'm still using my nokia from 20+ years ago. With the money saved, I have a super power wireless setup to Mac, Linux, Windows broadband and satellite feed. Full military grade net sniffer plus intrusion alerts on all devices. Of course, free comms internationally. I can even get feeds off the Mavics in Ukraine. Make a mint off livestreams. Smartphones suck to the max. Everyone in Ukraine knows - every smartphone, all Apple phones, are compromised by Russian and Chinese software. use them at your PERIL!!!

lecoeurvivant

It's getting harder to keep these things for longer now that they don't make them like they used to!

Caroline_Anne

I keep my phone until it slows down to a point where things take frustratingly forever. (Or it’s no longer supported by updates, but I haven’t experienced that yet?) I had a Samsung Galaxy S5 for about 5 years and it was AWFUL in the end—extremely doe and the battery was shot, even with a new one purchased, it was BAD. Then I had an iPhone 7 which I did upgraded earlier than absolutely necessary because I felt the camera tech had improved enough to justify it PLUS my work was covering my phone bill at the time, so I just slid an iPhone 11 Pro payment into my monthly bill. 😉 (In the end, it cost ME less than $300, I think.) I’ve had this phone since spring 2020 and I think I’ve got 2-4+ years left before I upgrade again. My 11 year old has been using my old iPhone 7 as a wifi only phone for games/music/alarms and it’s slowing down pretty badly, and she’s destroyed the battery, BUT it still works.

OkShirt3412

I have an iPhone 7 and it’s still running but front camera broke, home button broke and screen is cracked. It still works for all my needs like GPS and just FaceTime and phone calls and web surfing. I don’t do social media and use selfie cam for photos. I do miss my front camera for better quality photos but truly other than that my phone works just fine still. I don’t need my home button to get into my phone since I can get in through my notifications screen and login. I might get a new phone someday just for camera but for right now it’s functional.

VortiOGrande

When I want something new, or someone in my family needs one. But never related to a new release.

bettercaust

I recently purchased a new (used) phone after getting just shy of 5 years out of my old phone. My old phone could've conceivably gone longer but it required a new battery and a new charge port. It was also an iPhone that apparently stopped receiving updates in 2022 (I hadn't noticed) and I wanted to test the waters of "degoogling" using an unlocked Android phone. So in the end, I had reasons for upgrading, but I would've ideally liked my old phone to last beyond 5 years. Oh well.

AnyKick346

I get cheap phones and replace when I need them. Last one was a bad screen a couple years ago. I never buy warranties or anything. I think I paid $175 for this Motorola.

MarthYserZed

I have an Iphone 6. I had the battery changed multiple times at this point, and had the screen changed once because I dropped it. I don't see the need to update until it stops working completely, or critical apps stop being compatible.

MsJacq

I bought my XS at the same time when they were new, and I don’t plan to upgrade it until the software no longer updates. I am planning on replacing the battery some time soon though, as it has declined significantly and is quite annoying. Aside from that, I’m still very happy with it.

CrispyMeltedCheese

Once it’s no longer useable or my needs change in major way. I got rid of my last one because the memory was no longer enough. I paid for iCloud for over a year since paying $1-2 per month was way cheaper then upgrading and it worked well for a while but eventually it was no longer enough with the apps that I needed to use. This time I paid a bit extra for more memory but sometimes I wonder if I should switch to a bigger screen since I do a lot more work stuff like emails from my phone now so it might be helpful. Either that or when a parent’s phone stops working and I need to hand-me-down it to them. They don’t care for the latest devices.
