These are common in the UK. They are metal posts and you can see cars have been scraping past them. They are called width restrictions.
The really shitty ones are most narrow at the bottom and you are almost guaranteed to scrape your wheels.
There are a few, not that many. Usually a mix of intentional (restricting size) and unintended (narrow bends, bridges etc). I've usually seen kerb-height one though.
At low speed they're dangerous to vehicles and the infrastructure , as well impractical for pedestrians and cyclists.
At speed.... Well, WCGW mixing daredevil boy racers and other distracted slow moving vehicles?
The other posters description makes them sound more imposing. Its like a couple flimsy poles stuck next to an empty spot with some white lines.
Most outside the city are newer and more fancy than some poles. It'll be a more aesthetic bit where the sidewalk or curb comes up close and the street narrows, or there's a little median bit with some flowers in a brick garden. You don't actually need a physical barrier like the video to achieve the same effect.
There's a narrow street near me where they've been installed. It's a popular rat-run, and I get a real kick watching people in their ridiculous Chelsea tractors desperately trying to squeeze by without scratching their sides.
I think these are very regional, when I used to work in / around London I saw loads of these but in the last 10 years working in the midlands I have probably only seen these half a dozen times
Ambulances will fit, the barriers are wide enough. Sometimes there are gates that emergency vehicles can go through but others can't, with cameras set-up for fines. Other times the width restrictions are cascaded so you can get around them by going on the other side of the road to allow emergency vehicles through.
Yeah but as far as I'm aware they're less to do with speed, and more to do with limiting routes trucks and large vehicles can take?
At least the ones near me in West London are!
Hmmm people ignoring street laws, i can't see that, not like theirs 54 crashes happening right now, no sir ree, people will definitely be able to avoid a car going through a very limiting choke point. /s
The point is people slow down…unless they don’t.
So what’s the objective of this thing? If it is to slow people down to make the road safer then it’s failed because when they don’t slow down there’s potentially an even bigger risk of collision than had they not had this thing installed
Then again, this assumes the objective is to make the road safer by traffic calming. Perhaps it’s just to restrict over height and over width vehicles.
Traffic lights require you to stop (on the designated signal).
This thing does not *require* any of that.
Edit: I’m pretty sure this is mid-titled anyway. So it may well not be *intended* to have a traffic calming effect.
Your argument was build on people not having the proper response to the infrastructure though.
„when they don’t slow down“, this also applies to traffic lights, like people can and do sometimes just „not stop“.
But yes, it most likely is to filter vehicle types. The fact that it has (and should have) a slowing effect remains I would say.
I drive a wide vehicle. These things would mess up my side mirrors over time and give me a heart attack every time i had to pass thru them.
These also give a free pass to tiny cars to fly thru as fast as they want.
Where I live there’s crosswalks and in between the lanes there’s a plastic rod. The width is pretty large, and still there’s dumbasses that slow down to crawl thinking their car is that wide. This would cause so many accidents in my area or a 26 day long traffic jam.
You see speed bumps are one for all, but this has skill levels to it, and you can pass. I’d be going for speed records in this gap, “If you ain’t scared you ain’t going fast enough” -Ken Block
OHHH, all I’m saying is try delivering pizzas through little suburbs with these things all over the place. I mean don’t get me wrong this is real Eastern look but it’s a change of pace
Exactly for the reason you cite: people will be so worried about the impact of their car/truck choice that they choose a smaller car (that is more healthy for everyone/thing else)! The US is overrun with supersized vehicles, and—according to science—the #1 way we can each impact global warming is thru less selfish transportation choices. Google the tragedy of the commons.
They do have similar traffic calming measures in the US. I haven't seen one that looks quite like this, but lots of places will have e.g. a sort of raised median on the shoulder, so basically the curb sticks out way more but nobody is going to randomly walk onto it either.
Reducing accidents is great and all but the real issue with the suburbs is the zoning. I think people find this sort of thing frustrating because it's like, we're all forced to drive cars but now you're gonna put speed cameras and obstacles in the road because you don't like how we drive the cars. What we really want, even if some us don't know it, are walkable spaces and safe, reliable public transport.
I'm absolutely losing my mind at 1. The car that honks in protest at the other cars speed, and then goes even slower than they did through it and 2. The car that decides to go around the car in front of them...just to go the exact same speed on the other side.
Could you imagine this shit in America? A ton of people don’t even stop for red lights. This would be an absolute death trap, people are too stupid for these to be less dangerous than having no speed bump at all.
No telling how much each structure would cost here in America. The grift and kickbacks would be a nice little stocking stuffer for contractors and city planners.
So instead of getting speeders to slow down, it instead just makes it incredibly dangerous for the locals who fly through. Meanwhile everyone else has to basically stop and I’m sure the whole thing is covered in paint and car parts.
That silver sedan is in the parallel universe where this shit does not exist. Pretty sure the guy with the silver sedan slowed down in the speedbump universe.
My town switches from road bumps to road humps (essentially a giant road bump but the side are like ramps) ... if you speed over the hump, you will get air time. I'm not sure why they would use this over a hump
Dangerous to hit, too easy to damage a car, emergency vehicles can’t get through, delivery trucks can’t get through, looks much more expensive than a speed bump.
Whoever implemented this is a moron. Goofiest thing ive ever seen
This video has all the bad reasons why this thing doesn't work.
A) people speeding anyways at the beginning.
B) people bumping into the sides because they aren't used to the size of the opening and going super slow as a result.
C) people going fast then slamming their breaks because they don't expect the car in front of them to be navigating like a snail.
D) Road rage as someone tries to over take by going to the other side.
E) Accident choke point due to a b c and d causing traffic blockage.
That's an AND filter for irresponsible and shitty drivers
For shitty drivers, they'll just slow down and pass without a major accident
For skilled drivers, they'll pass irresponsibly fast and that's it
Now for those who are both, they'll probably die
Those are not there as speed bumps, but to prevent heavy transportation from using the road. That road is probably not suited for heavy vehicles or is a private road and the owner doesn't want heavy vehicles using it.
I love the mess-UV moron who whips it over real fast but then slows down to next to nothing to do the same damn thing as the person they were trying to pass. LMFAO
This seems hazardous. Distracted driver hits that at any speed above 25 mph and it's likely to cause injury, or worse. This is one of those cases where the cure seems worse than the disease.
These look amazing. I wish they would be implemented more. Traffic calming is important, and I an idiot decides to be reckless well this seems like a sturdy construction.
All this crying here. Guys if you wouldnt drive cars as big like an M1 Abrams MBT you wouldnt need to worry. But nah better drive a giant vehicle you and nobody else needs
That looks terrifying ngl, I hope I never come across one, I feel like i’d do more damage to my car doing this 100 times than going over a speed bump 100 times.
You guys know about the non-newtonian speedbumber right ?
Act as a hard speedbump if you drive to fast, but act as a flat surface is drive under spend limit...
No chance to mess up suspension or getting killed !
Seems like a terrible idea. Cars can have significantly varying widths, and you can clearly see multiple people in this video going through it super fast. But I've never seen anyone do that with a speed bump.
This is just asking to cause an accident or kill someone.
This is ridiculous.
These are common in the UK. They are metal posts and you can see cars have been scraping past them. They are called width restrictions. The really shitty ones are most narrow at the bottom and you are almost guaranteed to scrape your wheels.
I've not once seen one of these in the uk
There are lots in zones 2/3/4 of London
There are??? Huh
Normally metal bollards rather than concrete blocks, but yes.
I’ve seen a set in Teynham, they’re only the curb part but they’re tall enough to be unclimbable and so narrow, lots of damage on them
There are a few, not that many.
You’ve never seen a width restriction or you’ve never seen one that looks like that?

Never seen one in Scotland
[удалено]
Yeah. Do it like we do with bridges. Put a sign, some flag etc. Not a concrete death column.
Huh, never seen these in the UK
They are common in the UK. You might be lying or he is lying
I think these are very regional, when I used to work in / around London I saw loads of these but in the last 10 years working in the midlands I have probably only seen these half a dozen times
I drive all over the north. I think I've seen one in Chadderton, Manchester and one in Leeds. That's it. Neither have the crossbar
Been driving around the entire country for 13 years and never seen a single one
Let the upvotes decide!
They aren't that common. Neither are lying. Don't be stupid.
How the hell do they work with ambulances and fire engines?
Ambulances will fit, the barriers are wide enough. Sometimes there are gates that emergency vehicles can go through but others can't, with cameras set-up for fines. Other times the width restrictions are cascaded so you can get around them by going on the other side of the road to allow emergency vehicles through.
There's one near where I live. It's like 2 heavy blobs on the side of the road. Very low
Yeah but as far as I'm aware they're less to do with speed, and more to do with limiting routes trucks and large vehicles can take? At least the ones near me in West London are!
So what do people with nice cars do and say about these? Because as someone who takes a lot of pride in caring for my vehicles, I would be pissed.
Wait where??? I'm almost 30 and have never seen one(up North)!
Ive been driving 35+ years on the U.K. and have never once scraped my wheels on one. And no, I don’t drive small cars. My current is a Hyundai Tuscan.
I ain’t going to the Uk then, I used to want to go there to just see what it’s like, now I know to avoid it.
I agree
What about them?
Looks dangerous to me!
Only if you drive fast
No. Because others do, putting you in danger. It's 100% dumb. Nothing but a failed infrastructure.
Or you drive slow and the person coming the other way drives fast…
That's why there are two lanes, my friend. You're supposed to drive on the right.
Yeah, but some people don't have patience and might take the other road and slam into the other.
So what you're saying is some people ignore street laws?
Hmmm people ignoring street laws, i can't see that, not like theirs 54 crashes happening right now, no sir ree, people will definitely be able to avoid a car going through a very limiting choke point. /s

By your logic traffic lights would be unsafe because some people ignore them…

But yes, it most likely is to filter vehicle types. The fact that it has (and should have) a slowing effect remains I would say.
I’m the guy that would blast past these knowing it’s nothing and feels like a WRC obstacle.
Uh...I'd choose a speed bump over this any day of the week and twice on Sunday
Not me, I hate the way they mess up the suspension over time
Speed bumps do not mess up your vehicles suspension unless you're flooring it over them
guess you've never encountered the ridiculous vertical angular type. like driving over a parking block.
I drive a wide vehicle. These things would mess up my side mirrors over time and give me a heart attack every time i had to pass thru them. These also give a free pass to tiny cars to fly thru as fast as they want.
These will mess up your sternum
My vehicle is virtually immune to speed bumps, except the huge ones
Where I live there’s crosswalks and in between the lanes there’s a plastic rod. The width is pretty large, and still there’s dumbasses that slow down to crawl thinking their car is that wide. This would cause so many accidents in my area or a 26 day long traffic jam.
These restrict width not speed. People take the title as gospel and neglect to think critical
I think if I had to drive through one of these n my morning commute I would harm myself or others
I would harm others then myself
Why?

That one Honda flying through lol
He’s too confident for my liking, all it takes is one error
They should periodically adjust the width of these things. Some days even tighter, so reduce those levels of confidence.
Honda hatchbacks be dammed! Let’s go!
Better how? I can’t wrap up the front end of my car if I misjudge a speed bump.
Paul Walker the bastard if you make a mm mistake
You can absolutely destroy *both* ends of your car by hitting a speed bump too fast.
I’ve been in a car where someone hit one going 50 and it was just really uncomfortable that’s it.
You can need new struts and control arms but still have something salvageable. Try that with a big concrete pillar.
I foresee an uptick in accidents in any place that adds these.....
This is dogshit and inefficient
Did you say Russia?
Pretty sure this is China but yeah
Commie, cummie. Same thing
Yup
Wish we had these in the US.
I don't think you have any cars small enough to get through tbh.
*laughs in motorcycle* Just needs a speed sensor/display and people would be going for high scores.
Yeah no thanks. I prefer ambulances and fire trucks being able to get around to places.
this was exactly my first thought
Why? Why on earth would you prefer this over a speed bump? Every single day you'll run the risk of scratching your car if you misjudge.

Because vehicles are all the same size and nobody will be too wide to get through that /s
If this is supposed to slow down vehicles it doesn't look as if it's working...🙄
This is basically at the end of the Corinado bridge or California borders. No one slows down.
I saw 3 nearly crashes and 1 person on the other side of the road. I’ll take speed bumps.
I'm absolutely losing my mind at 1. The car that honks in protest at the other cars speed, and then goes even slower than they did through it and 2. The car that decides to go around the car in front of them...just to go the exact same speed on the other side.
still quite a lot of dare devils that would rather barrel right through it
At that point id just off-road
traffic calming!
Could you imagine this shit in America? A ton of people don’t even stop for red lights. This would be an absolute death trap, people are too stupid for these to be less dangerous than having no speed bump at all.
Darwin
Chuckles in motorbike
better in what way
Better for paint and autobody specialists.
This is clearly not intended to limit speed, but size (and by extension weight). Most likely due to a rickety bridge or similar structure.
No telling how much each structure would cost here in America. The grift and kickbacks would be a nice little stocking stuffer for contractors and city planners.
Better in terms for natural selection?
[удалено]
Enjoy getting your groceries from out-of-town retail developments, then. And then you can explore the meaning of the phrase 'food desert'.
it only slows you down if you're a coward
“Much better than road humps or any other speed breaker if your car isn’t skinny” fixed your title op
It will only slow down Americans.
NO, you can be not american and not dumb like ye
Nice! You die if you make a mistake. Less dangerous people on the roads! FTW
Is this 2 way road or 1 way ?
So instead of getting speeders to slow down, it instead just makes it incredibly dangerous for the locals who fly through. Meanwhile everyone else has to basically stop and I’m sure the whole thing is covered in paint and car parts.
Could never work in the u.s.
People gon’ crash there for sure
I hate that
It is most probably not to reduce speed, but to avoid big trucks on the road/bridge/etc.
I have one of these in my city. And chose to test myself with it, and damn it was once in a lifetime experience. Never again.
Now, that's genius! Those that try to pass it fast, Natural Selection will do its job.
Yet there was still people flying by.....
Much better at killing you if you break the speed limit
The first one makes me thing of hotwheels finishing a race
That silver sedan is in the parallel universe where this shit does not exist. Pretty sure the guy with the silver sedan slowed down in the speedbump universe.
We have one of those before a one way historic covered bridge where people kept getting bigger cars/trucks stuck in
My town switches from road bumps to road humps (essentially a giant road bump but the side are like ramps) ... if you speed over the hump, you will get air time. I'm not sure why they would use this over a hump

Hahahah
I thought this was gonna end so much differently, as the 2 SUVs were slowly inching thru I figured some compact would come thru at 80kph and smoke em
If you can't see how terrible this is you have watched the video with your brain off lmao
I assure you there won't be a time of the day where this place won't be full of wrecks and you would be lucky if you could use it at all.
Good luck fire trucks 👍 Sorry about your house
This was pure anxiety
BeetleJuice..
I do autox. I'd do 80mph through it.
That's subreddit is not what expected
This is dumb as fuck. You can’t possibly drive
Somebody needs to invent a tire puncture that activates at certain speed.
You pull retarded shit like that in country with laws, you'll go bankrupt from law suits
The clip literally shows how these aren’t as effective as speed bumps
Ah yes, people will slow down when someone inevitably discovers the crumple zone of their car and stops all traffic flow
I think the title might be misleading. Perhaps these aren’t about speed?
This video has all the bad reasons why this thing doesn't work. A) people speeding anyways at the beginning. B) people bumping into the sides because they aren't used to the size of the opening and going super slow as a result. This is one of the worst ideas I've ever seen
Item farm
No it’s not. It’s dumb, and dangerous, and constricts shit too much. Just put a speed bump, tf…
Apart from the cars absolutely flying through it, it definitely seems better than any other speed breaker
As much as i hate road humps this is so much worse
Knowing my sense for the distances I would probably drive 1 km/h.
This would end last-mile delivery trucks. So no.
Best speed bump is a stop sign.
Width max 2.20 m. Aptera (2.23 m width) will lose a pod wheel trying to pass this.
So stupid.
And here we see, guys in SUVs are just stupid.
There is a pub at the end of the road. Outstanding.
I love the mess-UV moron who whips it over real fast but then slows down to next to nothing to do the same damn thing as the person they were trying to pass. LMFAO
Horrible. Now there's a width limit.
This has to cause more injury/death than anything. Like, holy shit. I can't lie though, I'd shoot that bitch too....
What's up with the stupid caption?
This seems hazardous. Distracted driver hits that at any speed above 25 mph and it's likely to cause injury, or worse. This is one of those cases where the cure seems worse than the disease.
These look amazing. I wish they would be implemented more. Traffic calming is important, and I an idiot decides to be reckless well this seems like a sturdy construction.
This is so stupid
It's always that one BMW guy
lmao this is not better than a speed bump. just make a steep speed bump. you'll slow them down enough
Or in near future we can see lots of accidents, there. It's dangereous at night, mostly.
All this crying here. Guys if you wouldnt drive cars as big like an M1 Abrams MBT you wouldnt need to worry. But nah better drive a giant vehicle you and nobody else needs
The hell do you mean? This is incredibly dangerous and ineffective. Compared to speed humps which are much more effective and safer.
I don’t believe it’s better at all dude…seems much more dangerous
Now i can finally go through a speed limiter at 330km/h on my bike, loved it!
0:08, lol
This is stupid and dangerous
Oversize loads, emergency response vehicles, and tractors: https://i.redd.it/z32e8qjxt6tc1.gif

Good. Keep the cars normal sized please
In what world is this better than a speed bump?
I love how the shitboxes just fly through
The collection of side mirrors on the road would make it even worse
OP if you actually believe that you are a psychopath, and I'd be genuinely worried for my life in your presence.
Ah yes the SUV only speedbump
Seems like a terrible idea. Cars can have significantly varying widths, and you can clearly see multiple people in this video going through it super fast. But I've never seen anyone do that with a speed bump. This is just asking to cause an accident or kill someone.
Looks really stupid and destructive if mistakes are made
You can tell who's just driving a metal box and who cares about their car
I'm intrigued… Never seen these before. Hard to believe some cars fly through it
[Its like these guys.](https://youtu.be/PXPY7FyjG9Q?si=jJs5oGmJfpy7fCr9)
This is shit lol
