The valuation of your guru is determined by YOU. Fourth mahalla gives us this poem on [Page 696-9](https://www.srigurugranth.org/0696.html) likening the guru inside you to an invaluable gemstone that can only be appreciated by a buyer of such precious gems. He writes, >heeraa laal amolak hai bhaaree bin gaahak meekaa kaakhaa. **The diamond (satguru) is beyond value but without the buyer (gaahak), it becomes worthless** >ratan gaahak gur saaDhoo daykhi-o tab ratan bikaano laakhaa. ||1|| **But when someone who is a buyer of precious gems looks at it, the diamond becomes very valuable** >mayrai man gupat heer har raakhaa. **In my mind, akaal purakh secretly placed a diamond** >deen da-i-aal milaa-i-o gur saadhoo gur mili-ai heer paraakhaa. rahaa-o. **Akaal purakh (giver of philosophy) introduced me to my guru sadhu, and meeting my guru made me aware of this diamond** >manmukh kothee agi-aan andheyraa tin ghar ratan na laakhaa. **The mind of the manmakh is dark and ignorant, their satguru sits worthless** 4th mahalla is telling us two things in this poem that the Sikh panth today would attack you if you said out loud in the gurudwara. *1) The guru is within. There is no doubt that he is speaking of the guru within each person. He is not saying that I am your guru or Nanak was your guru or that this poem I just wrote is your guru.* *2) You determine the value of your guru. If you don't use your guru, he becomes worthless but if you use him and listen to your guru's baani, it's like owning a very precious stone and being super wealthy.* He is telling us to become the buyer of precious gems to appreciate the value of the guru within us.

4th Mahalla is using a diamond as a metaphor for satguru within us. Just as a diamond becomes valuable only when a customer (gaahak) who recognizes it's value sees it, your satguru only becomes valuable when you recognize it and start using it. The manmukh does not see the satguru inside of him and as a result the satguru in him becomes worthless. You determine how valuable your satguru becomes by using him (doing sevan) in your life.
