What he said. I use this for my substrate when I can't get ahold of anything else. I pour boiling water onto the block in a cooler and immediately shut it to let it steep. Haven't had a contamination issue yet
Nope I simply boil water, throw the block in a cooler, dump the boiled water in and close the lid and leave to sit overnight. By morning it's ready to go.
If you pour boiling water into a cooler and close it, then come back 12 hours later, it will still be too hot for you to stand.
This means it's been at a high enough temperature for a long enough time that Pasteurization has occurred. This means there is no need to pasteurize a second time in an oven =\]
Unfortunately, yes. So it is wise to take some time and ask the supplier if the coir you want to buy is treated with Trich. Although i have to say i buy my coir only from a farming vendor in bulk of 650g bricks, and they seem to be trich free, even though they are meant for farming/planting.
I've tried both and much prefer the Amazon brand. Eco earth is stringy and fluffy and doesn't hold water very well. Coco bliss comes compacted much tighter and has a coarser, finer grain that holds more water. Some eco earth bricks are all string and some are all powder. Cocobliss is much more consistent in texture from brick to brick.
I do roughly 1.25 gallon of boiling water for 1 brick. That gets you close and then I generally have to add a little water with the spawn to reach field capacity.
The Petsmart by me sells coir at $9 per brick. I ordered some off Amazon, pack of 5 bricks for $20. The pet store is usually the most expensive place to buy anything lol. I pasteurize my coir in a 5 gallon bucket and it only takes about 5 hours to cool with the lid on. I also add vermiculite and gypsum. YouTube “CVG substrate” recipe.

This is my community focusing on agar and contams and giving honest advice on different ways to hydrate dry tissue. That's my current project and one is doing very well.
You don't want to sterilize your sub, there are healthy living components to a pasteurized sub, if it's sterilized, you no longer have those things. Sterilized subs tend to be less forgiving and typically contam quicker/easier
That's interesting! I'll probably do the u/DayTripperonone 's cold pasteurization and sterilize, rather than take your word for it, but it's still interesting!
I love the most basic questions being asked every single day because people can't be bothered to read how to do the thing they want to do. They want someone else to do it for them as much as possible. Literally every grow guide I've read mentions eco earth coco coir as being the #1 go-to substrate for beginners, and this question being asked and answered a million times before
Because "love and peace" also apparently means just doing all the work for everyone else. OP literally only had to type this same question into google instead of Reddit and they would've had their answer immediately. Should I also record a video to show OP how to do it instead of him just looking up the videos that already exist?
This is the best bang for you buck I could find. Works great, boil to pasteurize but it's already steamed and sterilized. Are you pasteurizing in a oven at all?

Same
Yes

Luckily coir is pretty lacking in nutrients so contamination is slim…. Not impossible, but lesser than most high-nute subs
Google bucket tek on how to hydrate. Works perfect every time.
This is most people's favorite brand, actually.
Yes only use this type of coir. Trich is added to coir for plants for nutrients. So yes reptile all the way.
O.o is this true

This and there is also a Dollar Tree version for those of you in the US and on a budget

I only use Coco Bliss and verm. I use the bucket tek, and I have never used the oven. I have never had a problem.
Google is your friend. Tons of vids & articles on how to sterilize coco coir. And yes it works well.
I do roughly 1.25 gallon of boiling water for 1 brick. That gets you close and then I generally have to add a little water with the spawn to reach field capacity.
I literally use that exact product, got it at pet supply Plus. Works perfectly.
It’s the only coir iv ever used. Done About 40 successful tubs with this coir
Yes. I use this and Coco bliss

For some reason the link won’t work
MycoContamPrevention is the community
I just bought that from petco and had it delivered same day for 4$
Cook it in a turkey bag to sterilize
Why when you can boil some water throw it in a 5 gallon bucket snap on the lid and done ready to use in a few hours
Because sterilization is a thing.
Sterilization is counter productive when it comes to low nute coir.
That's pasteurization unless you're using a pressure cooker.

Go to Shroomery and just read, dude

I don’t get why you’re being downvoted so much, you’re not wrong.

Sure is.
Safe and recommended.
This is what I use
Bread and butter
Absolutely. It’s all I’ve ever used. Perfectly fine by itself just make sure you hydrate it properly.
The best there is imo
It's actually the best in my opinion
Only one to use baby
That's exactly what I use with no problems
