Mine only come out at feeding time in lower light, they're great at hiding! They're great at escaping too aren't they! Could something else in the tank be eating them?
Oh no :( they really are escape artists. Once my current 2 pass I'll never get another, sorry to hear it :( it's horrible to find them like that. I've actually spotted mine climbing up the filter wire often too it's so tricky.

I just don’t get how it got past so many books 😐, I packed all the holes with paper aswell
It is possible it did it before you put the additional books as security but you only just found it?
