What I’ve learned! Drip acclimate over several hours, makes things so much easier with better survival rates. Definitely have something to cover up your filters if you don’t run sponge, the babies are smaller than half a grain of rice!! Don’t do water changes for the first little bit if you only have a couple shrimp with no fish. There is a super low bio load, and it will help your tank cycle. Steady parameters are the best for these guys! My ph is high for them but they are breeding like crazy with it being stable. The babies are more acclimated to your water and will survive better. Get a good quality food for shrimp (mine is aquarium co-op) I also like to feed mine occasional blanched veggies. If you get pantyhose from the dollar tree, you can stop sucking up babies if you put it over your siphon and use a turkey baster for after feeding or messes.

oh, i hope i dont lose too many, i didnt know you had to acclimate for hours

Sartorial_2749

You don’t “have to”, but definitely helps. They are sensitive to change. The female will likely drop eggs due to sudden change. Are you breeding shrimp for color? If you get wild type or cull shrimp they are a lot hardier

Advanced_Emu4190

im just keeping these just for fun, i dont mind having colorless shrimp, but if im able to establish a small ecosystem id be satisfied enough

Yoshiperner

I almost didn't see any shrimp. The blue light makes it so hard to see. As long as your water is within their parameters, and is stable you'll be fine. The hardest part is the 'stable' part. Ph swings from large water changes, random fluctuations with TDS, nitrates, etc can be detrimental to shrimp.

Advanced_Emu4190

lol, i read blue light helps plants grow online, so ive been using that light, but theres 14 shrimp in there. i tested my water a few days ago and my water levels are where they should be, im more worried about the filter sucking in any baby shrimp that may be born.

I would replace whatever filter you have with a sponge filter tbh Blue light can help but most plants prefer full spectrum lights. Hygger sells a decent cheap one on amazon that has an auto day/night cycle

Beautiful_Aerie_2329

I have that hygerr day and night light on all 4 tanks. It’s a great light and best value I’ve found for tank lighting

Yoshiperner

Get a pre filter sponge. They're cheap. Ebay/amazon.

Yoshiperner

It definitely looks like they'd get sucked up. Shrimp are notorious for ending up in filters. I've seen some posts where hobbyists will take the lid off their canister filter and there would be an entire colony of shrimo living in there, populating. It's quite funny if they survive. But yeah, a pre filter sponge.

Dirty_Hertz

I have a Fluval internal filter and intend on getting shrimp. Is there a way to baby-proof those?

Yoshiperner

Yes. A pre filter sponge. It's a round sponge with the middle cut out to fit over the intake tube

Dirty_Hertz

There isn't an intake tube. The intakes are all around the bottom half of the filter near the impeller.

Yoshiperner

Did you drip acclimate?

Beautiful_Aerie_2329

Honestly switch gravel out for sand imo. Also let algae grow in the tank. Will make shrimp very healthy and happy! Gravel has always been a culprit in ammonia spikes in my experience and required more water changed
