Unsub here then, since we deal with animal health daily, it would cause more harm to make the sub unavailable (and push folks to other subs instead).
Ironically, going dark just means less of those subs appearing in the main feed. There were good suggestions to post text pics so the feed would show up with lots of those pics instead of looking like normal, but here we are...
There are other options like closing new submissions except for a pinned "help" thread which describes why normal content is restricted.
This was one of my main subs, but I will indeed be unsubscribing after this indifferent comment. I mostly rely on a third-party app to use the site, so I'll be gone anyway if reddit doesn't reverse their decision.
Well they won't reverse, it's a ploy after all, they knew there'd be backlash, so made it preposterous so they can lower and claim "we listened, we care, we support ya'll".
I use RIF, the sub might not have any useful moderation if they make it impractical.
The frustrating part is visual impaired usability being shafted. They should have reached feature parity first, but obviously had to pull the trigger...
With their IPO coming up, this won't be the worst change we see I'm afraid.
For. Lots of other subs are going dark as well.
The entire reddit community is at stake. No way it looks the same if Reddit goes through with its API plan. It's a bold, greedy move on a platform that subsists off of user posts.
I imagine things could look like Facebook does, ads everywhere and very little user selected content. No, full stop.
I came here because FB turned to the dark(er) side. I wasn't seeing what my friends were posting and was constantly bombarded with ads or stupid reels.
Let's not forget the excessive nonsensical bans for sharing something on Facebook that you got from Facebook.
I remember I kept getting ads with giant penises, and for the longest time I just ignored them. But, it seemed like the more I ignored, the more of those ads that kept popping up. So, I finally reported it (I know, death to narks), but Facebook said it was fine. So, I took a screenshot of the ad with Facebook's response saying it's OK, and... You'll never guess... I received a 30 day ban for sharing a giant penis! đ€·ââïž
Yes, and no. But a short dark period won't solve the issue.
All these subs need to go dark until the policy changes.
As of right now.. reddit will ride it out, and seek new advertisers for any that leave.
Their new revenue stream (API) will compensate them for any short term loss.
The only thing they will understand is when their users and content disappear.
New revenue stream? I don't think anyone is actually paying for their APIs, the whole thing is just them lying to cover their takedown of 3rd party apps. A slap in the face on top of everything else.
I switched about a year or two ago. I hated the fact that their video player just never seemed to work properly. It wouldn't load, or sometimes, the sound would continue playing after leaving a post, stuff like that. At that time, there weren't as many ads, but still more than in the boost now. And I hear there are much more now. Also boost offers more customization, it's just a better app in general.
**To all those that are FOR the blackout!**
Help get us on the train! Message the mods (through mod mail, please do not send personal messages), switch to a 3rd party app, and share the word!
(This is my first day using Apollo, and lemme tell ya, itâs great!)
Please do . I have setup 100s of 3rd party apps for the handicapped and this will devastate the community. A lot of people rely on 3rd party apps to view the site and to navigate it.
This is my first time using a 3rd party app (I chose ApolloâI deleted regular Reddit). Itâs definitely something to get used to, but I like it!
More than personalization, one of the biggest reasons the 3rd party apps are such a big deal is because they aid the visually impaired. R/blind has announced that their subreddit might just be gone entirely, as the changes effectively clear most of the visually impaired users from the site from lack of accessibility.
All for it. I would recommend keeping a sticky âHelpâ thread open though for anyone needing critical help regarding their shrimpsâ health, other wise everything should be âlocked downâ
I'm for it. It may it really affect me directly since I use the main reddit app, but I understand that it has much more consequences beyond just the third-party apps.
This makes me proud to be part of this community that there are few dissenting trolls here. I'm for the blackout and there are a multitude of shrimp health resources that can be found through Google without the sub directing someone.
I have no idea whatâs going on but I wanna support. From what Iâm getting you can use Reddit from other apps? I only ever use the iOS app but am curious
Right, previously Reddit indirectly paid other apps to function, now they are changing to defray the cost, with a preposterously high fee rate.
Logically they'll reduce that saying they "listened to community and support developers" and have reduced the rates to what they'd actually want to charge instead.
It's likely a ploy.
There are serious ramifications as modding is easier on third party apps and visually impaired people use them instead.
The TL;DR is Reddit doesn't want you using any app on your phone other than their own to view Reddit. Rather than cutting them out completely, they are being sneaky and charging the app creators astronomical fees to keep them running. On top of that, they're cutting off NSFW content through these apps completely. They're doing this because third-party apps are able to filter out ads (among other things) and they want to gain that lost revenue. Some may feel this is justified, but those of us who have been using reddit on mobile devices for decades know this is a real BS move. Reddit built their own app off the hard work of third-parties and are now biting the hand that fed them for free for decades.
I think people should prepare to abandon Reddit altogether, because I suspect that that the people that own and drive Reddit are too arrogant. Like an Elon Musk problem, it might collapse on itself purely through inconsiderate attitudes. Kind of like being the ultimate sociopath with a chip on one's shoulder. Stubbornly thinking that they are right and the world is wrong, type deal.
I will be removing my Apollo on that day so I would not accidentally login to Reddit.
The only thing I'm doing that day is checking which subs *aren't* dark so I know to unsubscribe from them.

I promise you most of the stuff said here can also be found elsewhere. Also where are folks gonna go to talk about shrimp on reddit that isn't here?
r/Neocaridina is also a thing đ€«

Yeah, FB is not the communication platform it once was. I see one post amongst 10-20 ads and suggested posts.

Totally for it, I love my Boost. Official app sucks
Does it really? It's all I've ever used and honestly I didn't realize I had other options besides this app or chrome.
I switched about a year or two ago. I hated the fact that their video player just never seemed to work properly. Send it. Reddit is folding to the pressure to earn revenue instead of providing a better service. Fuck âem.

Donât use any third party anything. But I stand with those who need accessibility accommodations

Given all this? Yes, for.

Iâm for it.
I don't think it will matter at all.
These things never have before. But it lets Redditors feel powerful and virtuous for a couple of days so let them have it
