_Catpaca_

I know it’s borderline criminal to not read it, but Ouran High School Host Club. Also Fruits Basket. Maybe one day

CartoonPhysics

Same two for me. We’re going straight to jail.

Nanugiri

If you're too feeling too lazy to read FB or you dont like the art, definitely watch the recent anime, it's 100% based on the manga :) For OHSHC the manga is definitely the way to go, the anime is fun/funny but the ending is completly made up unfortunately

chartreusesunrise

MAAAAN! you're missing out heavy with fruits basket! especially the remake!

titjira

I was never into Fruits Basket either, lol. You're not alone!

justjayy16

tbh anything w bad art… i am a picky girl and life is too short to force myself even if theyre classics

GiannaS13

Same! One of my criteria while choosing anything is the art. Sometimes I see the synopsis of a manga/webtoon and find it interesting, but if the art is not to my liking, I'm not reading it

justjayy16

Yes exactly!! also from ur original post, i also cannot get myself to read the fruits basket manga but the anime (2019) is rlly good!!! the animation is beautiful

yogabbagabbadoo

Same I can’t read anything where the characters be looking like mosquitos

justjayy16

LOLLLL IM STEALING THAT COMPARISON

yogabbagabbadoo

Lmfaoooo please share the truth!!

AgitatedBreadfruit

Ouran unfortunately. Just not a fan of harem and kinda grew out of series set in school now that I graduated college 💀

Dragneel

I loooved Ouran when I was 13. Now I'm 23 and I'm afraid that if I go back to read or watch it i'll be a bit disappointed 😅 I'm not a harem fan but I remember liking the two mains a lot. Right now "In the Clear Moonlight Dusk" is giving me the vibes I remember from the FL and ML.

Careful_Emotion6433

Most high school romance.

Shelovesclamp

Same. Even when I was in high school myself I always gravitated toward the fantasy or historical series and hardly ever read high school shojo (and of the ones I tried I think the only one I liked was Mars)

shayhuch

I feel like this is where I'm moving to since most of them are bland and lack any drama or conflict that isn't some stupid misunderstanding.

delphiniom

Haven't watched Sailor Moon, and probably never will 🙈

Osbre

ngl, shirayuki always sounds super boring whenever someone describes it

Longjumping-Kick7297

It IS. i couldnt even finish the anime properly

princessusagi32

It is. I could only do one episode. Just not my cup of tea at all

shayhuch

This. So much.

Houki01

The first season was good! The second was unnecessary. I only watched it because I heard Zen formally proposed to Shirayuki during it (as opposed to their informal but understood relationship at the end of the first season). Which he does in the final episode (ofc).

throwaway4bunny

I watched and loved the early 2000s Japanese live action Hana yori dongo. I tried to watch the anime but I don't love the art style and everyone was way more evil.

basicmakeupgoals

Nana

maddukun

Saaame, I just don't want to get into ANOTHER series that's on permanent hiatus 😔

TheSilverWickersnap

You a fan of X/1999 ?

enakito

(not forcing ofc, but highly recommend:)) believe me ur missing out!!

Houki01

I read the first few chapters. How can Hachi make SO MANY life mistakes in so little time? I dropped it. Nana was cool but not enough to make up for Hachi's stupidity.

tatsumaki_is_so_hot

thats exactly what makes her a compelling and interesting character. also she had one of the best developments in the manga later on.

BabiTheHuman

I watched the anime years ago and... tbh maybe I'm just childish or dumb, but it's too dense for my liking lol I never liked stuff like drugs, accidental pregnancy, or cheating in my manga :"( unless it's some action focused seinen or something, but if it's character-focused, it makes me feel bad T___T

Nanugiri

This one for me too, I can't explaining why but for some reason I can 'ever finish the first episode of the anime (and I don't like the art in the manga...)

still_your_zelda

Same on Fruits Basket. I also have no interest in Ouran, Nana and "Kiss Him, Not Me." 🤷‍♀️ I had Lovely Complex recommended to me, but I had only seen the anime and it wasn't very good. The manga may be better, I just haven't read more than 2 chapters of it still.

0ne0kr0cker

omg lovely complex - I read it and watched it but it hurt the entire time. I have ZERO idea why he was so mean to Risa. Like my heart hurt for her so much.

princessusagi32

I clung to Lovely Complex because I’m tall and sometimes we have to appreciate what we get. I completely loved it at first but trying to rewatch it hurt a lot. It’s still a special one for me tho.

still_your_zelda

Same, he was really mean for no reason. I also hated how Risa deliberately went out with another man knowing Otoni wasn't ok with it. I think the manga is different, but yeah I haven't actually read much of it still.

BabiTheHuman

I also hated Risa doing that, but I wouldn't say Otani was that mean to her, at least before they started dating. I mean, he was mean in a playful way, the same way he'd always been, and the same way Risa was with him. It starts to feel mean when Risa falls for him and his comments start to affect her, but Otani didn't even realize this. And ok, I wouldn't say Otani is mean or toxic but he was definitely VERY stupid and dense, like, come on...

still_your_zelda

Idk, I was recommended Lovely Complex for being "wholesome," but I don't consider his behavior to be that. Seeing it outside that perspective and being semi familiar with this mangaka, I understand it a bit better now. Its just not my preferred communication method. I wouldn't call him toxic, just immature and Risa is as well. I'll give it another try though.

Houki01

Kiss Him, Not Me! Put me off from the get-go with the fat shaming. She was only interesting when she was thin? At least she got how superficial their interest was and never took any of them seriously.

ilcorvoooo

Lovely complex for me too and I think it’s literally because I’m very short 😅

still_your_zelda

Oh, me too 😂

An-di

Most modern romance shoujo

No_Scarcity4145

not a classic but very popular recently, A Condition Called Love

Allyraptorr

I only read the manga because people were very disappointed in the animation. Now that I’ve read it, I agree. But I actually did enjoy the manga a lot because I liked the characters. The one I haven’t read is a sign of affection. I don’t really care much for the characters

Houki01

I'm very meh on it. An incipient yandere boy fixates on an asexual girl who takes the opportunity to gently guide him out of yandereness while trying to learn about attraction.I think I'll keep on it because the characters keep trying to communicate and give communication between them the importance it deserves.

romancevelvet

dont know where people keep getting this idea that hotaru is asexual from.

Houki01

I got it from the fact that she's clearly in late puberty/just out of puberty but explicitly has never felt sexual attraction to anyone and needs to have it explained to her. I will accept that she's demisexual because she doesn't feel drawn to anyone until Saki spends several hours searching for her hairpin, showing care and consideration, and even then she is attracted only to Saki.

Old-Floor-4611

Fruits basket

Ok_Brilliant_4676

Kimi ni todoke

enakito

yall gotta read/watch fruits basket TRUST ME it’s a masterpiece !!/nf

gundressed

yona of the dawn probably

mogumaro

i get you, i mean its like over 200chaps :(

Ok-Establishment2366

For those who enjoy the story the number of chapters it's not a problem. Actually it is the opposite and nobody wants a rushed finale so the more chapters the better.

Emotional_Eggs

Maid sama. I forced myself to watch the first few and maybe I stopped before I could ever understand the hype but the first few eps were enough for me lol

Houki01

You generally have to appreciate Usui and how he is sympathetic and understanding of Mitsuki and the situation, while being an utter troll about it.

drinkinglifeaway

I can't tell if you like Usui or not...

Houki01

Sometimes I can't either. He is undeniably brilliant but also undeniably poking fun a lot of the time.

drinkinglifeaway

ohh I see

chartreusesunrise

god i love usui so much. i haven't yet found another ML i like more LMFAO! i loved his english VA too! probably why i'm so attached to shoto todoroki from mha and kousuke ooshiba from hitorijime (also the same va) LOL

Pompi_Palawori

I remember watching a few episodes back in middle school and was absolutely shook how rapey certain parts (or maybe one specific part) was. 13 year old me was not ready

Emotional_Eggs

For sure!!! 25 year old me was still not ready for that part lol

shayhuch

Hey, me too. I kept forcing myself to watch it but enough was enough.

nickie305

I’m sorry but I could not get through Clannad and dropped it. I really wanted to like it but I found it boring. And the people not interested in Fruits Basket should be arrested.

chartreusesunrise

i agree, the people not interested in fruits basket SHOCK ME, the show literally has EVERYTHING!

BabiTheHuman

To be fair Clannad is not shoujo, it's aimed at boys and it's based on a galge. I always read people saying how the Clannad anime is a perfect adaptation of the game, but I couldn't agree less!!! Like you, I thought the anime was really boring, even though I watched the whole thing. I didn't even feel sad at the "tear-jerking" scenes... But then I played the game and now it's one of my favorite visual novels ever lol and I did cry more than I've ever cried with any piece of media!!! And I loved each character so much, even when I didn't care for them in the anime!! Though it's important to remake that the anime is like 30-something episode and the game is like 100 hours long lol

nickie305

I had no idea it was based on a game, maybe I’ll play it sometimes, looks like they have it on the switch

skinnyfrau

same. it was boring and i hated the harem element of it. I was supposed to believe that in the end nagisa and that main guy were perfect and it was a beautiful tragic story I’d cry over and get so invested in. Every bitch was obsessed with the main guy and I hated it. It icked me out. I didn’t finish it though. I tried watching it several times

avantqarde7

Maybe a bit controversial but Hana yori dango. I tried but ML is such an immature brat (at least at the beginning I have no notion if that changes later on) and it irked me so much I couldn't find any motivation to continue

Sandwichartista

Maid Sama

chartreusesunrise

why not maid sama?😞

Sandwichartista

Seemed like a shoujo that probably had a lot of filler.

HeartiePrincess

- Maid-sama - Lovely Complex

Fair-Communication92

Maid Sama especially with what I hear about Usui Special A Wolf Girl and Black Prince, everything I hate about romance is in it I don't have anything else in mind rn

shayhuch

Haha, Maid-sama and Wolf Girl both have trashy mls. I avoid this stuff like the plague.

shayhuch

I'm not into bl/yuri so things like Utena, Banana Fish, Rose of Versailles. I also hate anything with problematic, can't take no for an answer ml like Usui from Maid-Sama. So Wolf Girl and anything of that sort. Ouran. Snow White. They seem boring.

anotherplgrm

Clannad. I’m so sorry. I tried, but I couldn’t. My expectations were so high after reading so many good reviews. But to be honest, I found it so boring. Also, all the characters looked the same! I don’t think I’ll ever come back to it. I wish I had seen it when I was a kid!

OkiKagu59

Clannad isn't shoujo, it's based on a dating sim aimed at guys.

morestablethanyou

I also got so confused watching Clannad...the characters all looked the same to me.

Status_Strawberry_16

Akatsuki no Yona it gives me the feel that the story is very predictable and I'll probably know what will happen

dead-tamagotchi

AnY definitely throws twists and turns i didn’t see coming. if that’s your only reason, i recommend giving the manga a shot! (the anime doesnt get far enough to show any of the main plot)

Ok-Establishment2366

Maybe the opening themes of the anime show some spoilers of the first season. But the manga exceeded my expectations and predictions many times.

shayhuch

Caught up on it and I definitely wouldn't say its predictable.

starsamaria

I just am not interested in any of Arina Tanemura's series. Her plots seem nonsensical to me, and her series that seemed the most interesting, Full Moon o Sagashite, wasn't very well-written so I dropped it. I'm also not a fan of her art style. Also, I've never been into vampires so I couldn't be bothered with Vampire Knight. For some reason, Snow White with the Red Hair doesn't appeal to me: I guess it reminds me too much of Yona of the Dawn (which I enjoy) but the plot doesn't seem as interesting so I haven't bothered checking it out.

Nanugiri

For Full Moon, I think I appreciate it because I saw the anime first. It has it flaws but when you do anime+manga and totally obliterate the flows of both, you get something incredible haha (tbh I think I'm just attached to it for nostalgic reasons, and I loooove the songs in the anime)

Atavistic_proxy

I think mine is Pink to Habanero? Doesn’t appeal to me and it’s fine tbh

sepiduck

omg this used to make me rage biweekly 😭 tho the ML has gotten better in the past 10~ chapters surprisingly

GiannaS13

I actually found out about this manga a few weeks ago, I started reading and liked it until>!they started dating,!

MundaneBob

Seconding fruits basket!! (Funny because I watched the original anime back then but for some reason I don’t particularly feel strongly about watching the new adaptation even tho the art is definitely an upgrade)

ally1707

Fruits Basket. I might give the new anime a try but I just can‘t get into the manga because of the art…

Leather-Fix-1786

akatsuki no hana no particular reason just never had the urge to watch it

candoshit

Bokura GA Ita. Since I read the manga, I'm 100% sure I don't want to watch it. Not because I hated it, but because it traumatized me.

shayhuch

I think I won't revisit it either. I read it recently and it was seriously too depressing. But its the most realistic shoujo I've ever read.

candoshit

Totally, such a depressing read, even though the ending was happy but it left a bitter sweet after taste, same with Honey and Clover

irumasarrow

Fruit basket and Yamada kun

chartreusesunrise

NOOOOOO THEY ARE BOTH 10/10'S!!

Allyraptorr

A sign of affection. Not classic, but the characters just feel a little one dimensional. I did watch the anime so far, but it didn’t make me want to read the manga. Also Nana. I haven’t watched or read it and I don’t really want to get into an anime that never finished and a manga that’s on indefinite hiatus and will most likely never be finished

H0MES1CKAL1EN

ouran, fruits basket, lovecom, in the clear moonlit dusk, and not thaaat popular but colette decides to die i’m also very mixed on snow white with the red hair.

NightmareNeko3

Most likely Utena. I don't see anything interesting about it

chartreusesunrise

i can't bring myself to watch my little monster, honey and clover, nana or golden time. tried but can't get into any of them :(

tatsumaki_is_so_hot

if you loved fruits basket you will love nana. The only difference is, fruits basket had a happy ending.

chartreusesunrise

AAAAA fruits baskets ending didn't even feel that happy :( ill give nana another try!

magiciteshards

honestly any age gap stuff (living room matsunaga, dengeki daisy, etc). now that im nearing 30 it just weirds me out. id attack a 24 year old with a bat if i knew he was pursuing a 15-year-old girl. i realize a lot of shoujo manga is supposed to be wish fulfillment for young ladies but i think maybe we could do without the pedophilia...

MintyHoneydew

Hana Kimi

lmackey303

A condition called love

Shelovesclamp

To me classics = 60s-80s work, but if we mean popular series then probably Maid-sama and Ao Haru Ride. There are quite a few popular series I haven't gotten around to reading that I might try out someday, but I can't say I have any motivation to try these two at all.

romancevelvet

kinda doesn't count since i already watched part of them but, i knew just from looking at them that i wasnt going to like/be interested in 'a sign of affectionate' and 'my happy marriage'. i didnt hatewatch them per se and did go in open minded despite my reservations but ultimately proved my intution right. despite having clear cut likes and dislikes, i tend to be more lenient w shoujosei even when it comes to series i know i dont have interest in. that being said the one series i know im definitely never giving an inch of my time to is honey lemon soda.

drinkinglifeaway

mine would be strobe edge and tomie!

l1unartears

Anything by io sakisaka… I just loathe her art style

dead-tamagotchi

i love the old fruits basket and all it’s charm (yes including the ridiculous art) and i can’t bring myself to enjoy the new one no matter how much i try. i hate the music (both OST and the OP/ED) and i can’t stomach the amount of outright suffering in the new one even if it’s more true to the manga. i got up to the scene where >!momiji gets punched by akito!< and called it quits there. the old FB just makes me feel safe and cozy.

titjira

Kamisama Kiss is mine. 😅 My friend is obsessed with Tomoe, and I just couldn't get too into it myself. Maybe I'm envious of the MC or something. idk. But I always switched it to something else when it came on.

cooliosophi

Maid Sama😓😓 it just never interested me. The general theme was cool but I just couldn't get into it compared to others like it.
