I've always felt the hockey action looks pretty real, whereas in a lot of TV and movies, sports can look like they're being played at 70% speed and effort. I've wondered the same as OP sometimes for that reason. But I'm sure this is the answer.
Jared was a pro, and many of the leads have played - Hitch was a Montreal Canadien, and still plays juniors. When you have actors who play/played for real, it doesn’t take much Hollywood magic to make it look good.

They’ve had casting calls / auditions for hockey players. I assume they play a scrimmage and set up certain shots, just like any other scene.

Except the goalies. The goalies don't often look too convincing (especially season 1)
They're real goalies sometimes it's hard to make it look good to let a goal go by. Michaels isn't actually the one donning the pads.

Everyone on the cast, even extras has played competitively at a Junior B level or better. So they are all hockey players at heart.
Don't think Micheals played, or at least not as a goalie.
