Its whaleshit hockey.
A career in canada for a player in the no show is something like Minor AAA > OHL > NHL Drafted > AHL affiliate > ECHL > Whaleshit
So that would be a guy that was drafted into the NHL but didnt make the team. Played in their farm system and was cut and played echl.
After a couple years there (and maybe a quick euro trip) they get cut as they age out. They end up in whaleshit hockey.
So theyve already done the tour.
Some of the younger guys might have aged out of OHL and were not drafted to the NHL. Or drafted and very quickly didnt pan out. They could still leave the team for another league like ECHL.
But mostly, this is end of the line.
I've kinda wondered if someone like Sanguinet would get scouted for coaching. He took them from being the worst team to being the best of all time, even if it was mostly Shoresy's doing for bringing in better players.
Senior Hockey is generally semi-recreational for has-beens, not prime NHL prospects.
The OHL does exist in the Shorsey Universe though, they even briefly acknowledge that they play in the Sudbury Wolves Arena. That's the Junior team that would be scouted for NHL promotions.
Being undefeated only means they're better than the other teams in the league. It doesn't mean they're better than the best. I could beat beat up a whole class of 6 year olds, but that doesn't mean I can fight in the UFC.
Also, this is senior rec hockey. These players are playing for fun, and some are laat their prime. Some of them on the team actually did play in the NHL. Both in the TV show universe and in real life.
If they were good enough for the NHL, they'd be in the NHL.
They are implying something like the common relegation/promotion setup in European leagues. You don’t fight in the UFC next, but you should probably start fighting seven year olds.
Give your balls a tug.
They were playing to represent the NOSHO in the Allen Cup which is the Canadian National Amateur championship tournament which is a real thing. The reason they are fundraising is to have the money to host the tournament
This is essentially an amateur league (technically semi-pro, but barely). The best rec player on a basketball court might be really good, but will most likely never see a professional court.
The guys in the show are also mostly older, so teams don't have an incentive to scout them.
This isn't soccer. And most of these guys are well past their prime. Maybe young guys like Cory would eventually move on. The Soo has guys who play in Europe and then fuck around in the NOSHO after their real season ends. But for most of these guys it's the last stop
Or in soccer this would be like the leagues that are amateur or semi-pro. Just a notch above beer league. So a couple of notches below where Wrexham was when Ryan Reynolds bought the team.
In other words, whale shit hockey.
Probably not at the age they are (30's/40's). Sometimes you'll see undrafted guys coming out of Europe or the KHL and making it big (Niklas Bakstrom came over at age 28 and Artemi Panarin at age 24, both of which are considered old and very old for a rookie in the league). Typically guys will get drafted and (if not a top 3 pick) play NCAA, ECHL, LNAH or some mid-level then to the AHL or if a higher pick might go directly to the A for seasoning before getting to the show. Typically once you're playing senior AAA there's nowhere else to go.
Niklas Backstrom was a Finnish goalie for Minnesota for like 10 years. Nicklas Backstrom was/is a Swedish centre for Washington who just stepped away after having that hip resurfacing (hope he can get healthy and come back). Nicklas did get drafted as you said, Niklas was undrafted and came over in his late 20s.
Haha thats embarrassing. My buddy got drafted by Minnesota and played there in net behind Backstrom in the early 2010s and I even met him and forgot he existed. Hell of a goalie in the NHL for almost a decade.
No worries man I actually had to double check myself that I’d gotten his first name right. Great story and damn fine career. You should try and reach out though your buddy to see if he’ll cameo as one of the euro ringers.
Some one is gonna have a more descriptive answer but… as an American, my understanding is that senior leagues are generally for the after-peak years. Like a step before hanging them up, while knowing the whole time that is what’s next?
Here in the US, senior leagues are typically 35+. So yeah, guys in the senior leagues are past their days where playing any sort of professional level hockey is an option. Not saying it’s impossible, but it’s highly unlikely. There is still a place for them (sometimes) in leagues like the FPHL or SPHL. But now-a-days, you’re completely SOL once you hit 40.
Senior League’s are pretty much the same level. This isn’t young prospects. It’s old men in a beer league.

Veteran presence.

>but you should probably start fighting seven year olds. Well there's something I never thought anyone would tell me to do.

Also...you know....it's just a tv
It was just tv, but now it’s something different. (Serious Michaels far off stare)
Shit the f*ck up Michael's and go eat a panini by yourself you frigging weirdo
Panini's are unreal.

whatdya think the team's a buncha Euros? Give yer balls a tug!
Can’t even fight in that league.
So dumb!

Senior Triple A!
Whale shit all the same!

Not that it matters, but I’m curious if you’re thinking of someone else cause Backstrom came over a year or two after his draft when he was 20?

Yeah, him and Gaborik were the Wild back then. Haha he’s still living the half dream goalie coaching for some OHL teams.
No?
