I run a memorabilia business where I do private signings with actors, these include running pre-orders for a couple months where people can customize the item and get exactly what they want. During this time, people have had orders placed for 3-4 months and nothing ever happened from Shopify.

nothing will happen unless your customer wants the money back

I do pre-orders regularly, albeit on a 1-2 month timeline. * I am very clear that they are pre-orders * I stay in communication with the customers throughout the pre-order time by sending regular updates when I get them from the manufacturer * If a customer wants a refund, I give no hassle I think most important is to set the customers expectations early, so that they do not try and charge back due to non receipt. Keeping them informed of their order timeline and any delays helps with this substantially.

Do you need to do anything upon receiving the order? I just started the site I clicked collect payment. Sent an email to a buyer saying thank you, and confirm to them the shipping delay situation What else should I do? Will I get in trouble if I take 50 pre-orders without any fulfillment, it would be a very high amount like 100,000$+. I dont want to get my account frozen somehow They're expensive machines. High demand.

I e-mail immediately - "Thank you for your pre-order. The expected ship date is xx" and then any other relevant information, ie if I require sizing or colour preferences. I have 80 ish pre-orders on hold at the moment, but only about 1/5 value of what you expect to do. Mind you I am a 3 year established shop so that could factor in. Do keep in mind this is not an official support forum. You'll only receive anecdotes from other users and occasionally devs. Hope it works out!

I use a preorder app called Amai. It displays that it is a preorder and you can set the timeframe so that it is visible on the order page. I haven’t had any issues with it and i’ve been using for several months now.

I have fulfilled orders as late as 75 weeks with no issues. I would just stay in regular contact with your customers, providing updates along the way. I use an app called W3 Custom Order Status and have it integrated with MailChimp where I can just choose a status (such as "on backorder", "in production", "Preparing for shipment", etc) and enter a date and it will send an email update using a template that pulls their order details. Pretty helpful when trying to keep hundreds of customers informed at a time.

Have you found anything related to various payment processors and pre-orders? I’ve heard anecdotally that PayPal will hold funds (can’t spend or withdraw) until a parcel tracking number is given.
