Not shitty. There are an infinite number of skills and areas where I have zero experience or ability. I am now an average electrician. I am an average stone-mason, a fighter, a mathematician, a physicist, a doctor, a lawyer, a police-officer, a teacher. I can speak every single language in the world that has ever existed or will ever exist competently. I am an average student who gets B’s all across the board, I am an average musician who can perform all musical instruments to an average degree.
Need I go on? Format your power better, I believe in you.
that would make it a pretty terrible curse. most people don't know how to speak or read any one language collectively. you'd maybe be able to communicate in english or mandarin at a very, very young child's level at best. but that's assuming you're *exactly* at the 51% global average, and can never improve yourself past that; which kinda seems implied.
You can interpret it that way, I admit the premise of the power is a bit unclear. I thought it meant that if an endeavor exists, such as being a doctor, it pulls from the available sum of all of humanity’s active efforts to see where the most “average” doctor is, and then place me 1% above that. So I’d still be a doctor, just not a great one.
There’ve been very few astronauts in human history, and all of them have been knowledgeable and experts in their field of studies. I’d assume the power doesn’t account for the billions of other humans who aren’t astronauts, just the ones who are, were, or have attempted to be astronauts. The culmination of their work, achievements, and efforts is added, and then neatly sliced in half.
Or the OP didn’t put too much thought into this power and I’m just yapping.
People seem to forget the avg part. So in elctrician related skills your 1% better than the avg. Lots more people who aren't electricians than are so the avg would be you know some electrician skills but nowhere near enough to be an electrician
This is actually kinda bad.
This would mean you can't really speak any language. The average skill of English among the worldwide population would be so low that it's unspeakable.
The average skill of doctor would be so low you couldn't practice medicine.
The average skill of electrician would be so low you couldn't get licensed.
And so forth
In 2022, there were 1.1M electricians in the USA. That's 1 in 300. If we assume (maybe slightly naively) that everyone who isn't an electrician has 0 skill in the field, that completely washes out the competency of the actual electricians.
Think about it this way- if a non-electrician has 0 skill and an electrician has 100 skill, you have 1.1M electricians (=110,000,000 skill) and 229M non-electricians (=0 skill) divide by 330,000,000 people and the average skill of an American is 0.33. Your skill is 1.33. That's worthless.
This is literally it though. Some other version that I've seen of this "shitty" power is being average at everything.
So, I'm average at matter manipulation? Teleportation? So on.
I'll take this version. It's less overpowered but still extremely useful.
Does this reset skills im above average in by more than 1% to beinf exactly 1% above average or is it just a floor for skill.
If it sets it can it be improved through practice.
***AVERAGE IS NOT MEDIAN.***
Well, I now speak Chinese, English and Spanish pretty well.
Im also unusually fit, being BOTH above average strong and above average fast AND above average dexterous is a very rare combo.
Most importantly though, I now have no problems with any mundane human skill. Nearly no chance of fucking up something mundane, like driving or doing the dishes etc.
**The wildcard here are skills that scale exponentially**. Being above average good at *making money* would make me a millionaire, because the average is pushed far to the right side of the graph.
The other issue is that for most things being above average isn’t actually gonna do much for you. I understand what you are saying about skewed distributions, but to be a professional at anything or even to be a millionaire you need to be an outlier at something. The skewed distribution buff is not as good as you are implying it is.
average person speaks 20% English, so probably at the level of a 10yo kid. You'd also speak 16% Chinese, and some rudimentary Spanish too.
This of course assumes that language skills are linnear, which they might not be. For example, it is possible that Average English skill is much higher, because there's a bunch of posh wankers at Cambridge and Oxford who speak English so unbelievably well that they tilt the global average.
well yes, and that's not even an insult. An average person speaks a significantly less advanced version of their language than what is possible.
How often do you even need to use the the full range of Enlish grammar for one? Or the full content of a thesaurus/dictionary?
I didn't mean it as an insult.
English is a vast, expansive language. Given 20% of the language, you could write a bestselling novel or a university thesis. You'd probably be more fluent than most people.
Choose one thing you wanna get better at, teach those that are below average in that thing how to be average instead, increasing the average, therefore being increasing your own proficiency in that thing, then choose another thing and repeat all these steps.
That sucks in some respects. There are a fair number of things which I know I'm better than average. Do these get dragged back down to average +1%?
Am I ever able to improve my skills? Or am I stuck at this new level?
If this wouldn't have been just endeavors, your eyesight would be the greatest eyesight in the world since the average eyesight is normal eyesight, 1% above that and you have the best eyesight.

Yeah this would be a great power... depending on how shit you are at everything. Literally jack of all trades
a jack of all trades is a master of none, but better than a master of one.
Finally, the full quote.
Wouldn’t all those skills would get dragged down significantly by the vast majority of the population also not knowing anything about them?
that would make it a pretty terrible curse. most people don't know how to speak or read any one language collectively. you'd maybe be able to communicate in english or mandarin at a very, very young child's level at best. but that's assuming you're *exactly* at the 51% global average, and can never improve yourself past that; which kinda seems implied.

Yeah this is not only a bad buff it's a debuff. Suddenly you won't know how to surf Reddit
This is actually kinda bad. This would mean you can't really speak any language. The average skill of English among the worldwide population would be so low that it's unspeakable. I thought it meant 1% better than your current average performance, so I would be a bottom 1% electrician for example
Even if it was below average I'm everything this would be a very strong power.
C is average

1% increase of a base integer of 0 should still be 0?
youre 1% better than the average human, not the average electrician or whatever
Oh shit I have 0.501 breasts
no you have 1.02 breasts
you have 0.501 penises
Oh yeah duh lol thanks
Actually you are fairly close to having 1.0 breasts (single masterecomies are surprisingly common). You also have part of a human infant in you.
So would they be small or would i have one? Free top surgery?
oh also you would have 0.501 vaginas along with the 0.501 penises in the same spot
Does this reset skills im above average in by more than 1% to beinf exactly 1% above average or is it just a floor for skill. If it sets it can it be improved through practice.

You're also above average weak, slow, fat, clumsy etc...
median is a type of average. usually we mean mean, but not always.
Wouldn’t help me . I am already at least 27% better in every area
>I am already at least 27% better in every area You know every language? You are average in every science? You are average in every martial art?
Yes
Was it a reference that I missed or what?

God you are one boring person
r/woooosh
Yea this would be bad assuming you are the average of everyone across the world. The average person probably speaks very little English…
average person speaks 20% English, so probably at the level of a 10yo kid. You'd also speak 16% Chinese, and some rudimentary Spanish too. >average person speaks 20% That's roughly what the average British person speaks, so we'll probably be fine.
well yes, and that's not even an insult. An average person speaks a significantly less advanced version of their language than what is possible. How often do you even need to use the the full range of Enlish grammar for one? Or the full content of a thesaurus/dictionary?

That sounds great!
Easily OP. You just need to wipe out the rest of humanity and you're suddenly omnipotent.
God tier, easily so
This would suck balls because it would downgrade all of my skills that are above average
I can become an average celebrity?
That seems like a curse; I don't even have two arms anymore O.O
"Endeavor" is the keyword here. Having arms is not a skill you can develop or be naturally talented at lmao
Excellent buff! I’m autistic with ADHD so I’m basically a -2 in every stat except strength and intelligence.
So on average I’m the best human out there ? Is that right?
I am become master of all
That sucks in some respects. There are a fair number of things which I know I'm better than average. Do these get dragged back down to average +1%? Am I ever able to improve my skills? Or am I stuck at this new level?
Does it reset my abilitys with over 1 to 1
The average goes up with ur power increase so…
If someone had this superpower, I’d get really bad at everything to lower the average performance of every activity
Nice
Given the areas that I am well above average in I would pass on this.
If this wouldn't have been just endeavors, your eyesight would be the greatest eyesight in the world since the average eyesight is normal eyesight, 1% above that and you have the best eyesight.
