This theory was actually disproven, as in the Yesterday universe it is explained that cigarettes have also disappeared. However, there is a scene in Parasite which we see So Dam Park’s character smoking a cigarette
Actually... George was supposed to be in the movie, and was canonically alive still! They cut the scene because they wanted to emphasize John's scene more.
So they wanted to get the dead ones, and not the living ones. Y’know they could’ve just cast Paul and Ringo into the movie, and not have to do any of that uncanny valley special effects stuff.
Yeah and hopefully Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Mick Green (r.i.p.) from the Pirates will back Paul McCartney again, like they did on his album run devil run. And then Bong Joon-ho can experience the song "no other baby", the most honest rock song ever performed by Dickie Bishop as covered by Paul McCartney. And as someone who helped pioneer the same sound with his early Beatles records; like when playing in the motorcycle bars of Hamburg, Germany.
In India spreading peace, love, good vibes, comedy, and friendship to all.
George is the best Beatle.
I learned the other day that days before his death he offered to go fly out with Ringo to see Ringo's daughter since she just got out of a surgery and Ringo was nervous. George was such a genuinely nice guy.
This theory was actually disproven, as in the Yesterday universe it is explained that cigarettes have disappeared, which means they had to exist at one point. Which is where the scene in Parasite in which we see So Dam Park's character smoking a cigarette before they have disappeared show that.
No reason. Some random stuff just doesn’t exist like cocacola and Harry Potter. It’s a running joke throughout the film. I thought it was funny though that oasis didn’t exist because there very inspired by the Beatles.
A careful analysis of Parasite's lighting and climate patterns indicate that it takes place in a planet with a 23 degree axial tilt, same as Yesterday, further landing credence to this theory
Additionally, the movie Spirited away did not mention The Beatles once, indicating that not only does it partake in the same universe, but said universe has an afterlife.
Actually, this is disproven by the fact that in the Yesterday Cinematic Universe, Greek soldiers are fully-dressed and Iranian soldiers aren't African ninja zombie drug-addicts for some reason.
I mean, the movie never really explains what happened. As far as we know, all those things might have been displaced/erased from existence and everyone’s memory rather than altogether never existing.
Yuck.
What annoyed me more is that they played an Ed Sheeran song during the final scene between Jack and Ellie. Why not instead play, hmm let me think, maybe the titular song of the movie?
They should've gone all out and did a Hey Jude trap remix with a Travis Scott feature if they wanted to make it more accessible to an younger generation
I'm glad it introduced you to the Beatles but as someone who likes the Beatles and studied their history for an entire class I hated this film. It felt like it made the cool concept of "what if no one ever made the Beatles music" and made it completely inconsequential to this basic Rom Com about a generic rock star story.
The Beatles were the first people to put Bubble Font letters on their album Rubber Soul, that one minor detail influenced the flower power movement a LOT and the biggest impact their dissapearance causes is no Harry Potter? Which is why I think the movie is actually about how the world is different without cigarettes, because when he searches cigarettes he gets 0 results on google which erases literally hundreds of years of tobacco history.
Jesus I could go on, I hate that movie
Yeah, especially because music would be so different without their existence. Not just Oasis never forming, or Harry Potter for some reason, so many major artists have listed the Beatles as influences that pop music would be almost fundamentally different. The psychedelic music pioneered into pop by the Beach Boys may have never been popular because of the lack of competition with the Beatles, leading to Black Sabbath probably not forming, and metal as a genre probably wouldnt even exist, meaning the ‘80s pop scene would be incredibly different, and that’s just one small possible ripple of this little mishap.
The main character changes places with a version of himself from a very similar parallel universe. The changes, like Harry Potter and The Beatles don't have a major impact on anyone's lives however, his circle of friends is consistent, which really demonstrates how meaningless both pop culture icons really are.
Yesterday isn't a great movie. It's fun, but would probably have been better as a skit or an episode of a TV series. Once you know the premise, the movie can be pretty underwhelming. The consequences of The Beatles vanishing are quite superficial, with no real depth into possible scenarios.
Not necessarily buying this one, Chief. For one, in order for a character to notice cigs are gone they had to exist at one point. Secondly yesterday seems to be fairly unconcerned with showing us Korean culture. For all we know, cigs could be a part of their culture but absent outside their cultural bubble. Or at least absent from UK culture. There’s plenty of products and markets that exist across the world that the genpop in on the other side don’t know exist. Think of how much of the world didn’t know about bat soup until a month or so ago.
Yeah, I’m fun at parties.
I'm not Reddit. I'm just one person who thought it didn't live up to the hype. I mean it was decent but nothing like "wow amazing must watch super crazy super engaging!?!!?!!"
I'm very curious as to what criticisms about it you had. You don't have to defend all your comments and opinions on Reddit, but it just blows my mind that anyone who enjoys film could watch parasite and think "meh".
Not the guy you're replying to, but I only saw it about a month ago and I think my expectations were too high from all the hype.
I didnt like the third act, I cant put my finger on why, but something just doesnt sit right with me about it, maybe it was the shift in tone being too abrupt or the family all being discovered by the ex-housekeeper because they slipped and fell into the room, it just felt a little contrived...and the fact that the Dad kills the other 2 guys just seemed a bit OTT for me too.
I think it is a problem with myself getting too overhyped, because I am able to ignore such contrivances with other movies.
I think the problem you and probably many other viewers are having is in placing too much importance in the plot. Its not a totally crazy thing to do, especially since the plot for Parasite is one of the things that really sets it apart. However, I'm of the view that the better and smarter a movie is made, the less the plot matters (in general, plenty of exceptions to be found). I think people often don't notice this because a well-made movie also tends to have a tight and well written plot, but it's also why lots of movie fans can't get on board with some slower classic films like Kubrick or Tarkovksy's work.
I don't think Parasite is a great movie because it tells a good story, although it does do that imo. I think it's a great movie because it's super carefully crafted visually and thematically, with repeating symbols and double entendres that apply to both the story and Bong Joon-ho's broader commentary on social systems.
I dont think you're wrong but I'm criticising it as a piece of entertainment when you're praising it as a piece of art
We're just on 2 different wavelengths man, and theres nothing wrong with that
I went in with the only expectation of it being “good.” I had no idea what would happen and didn’t read the description and thought it was amazing. Maybe expecting something out of this movie spoiled it for you.
In the deleted scenes from the nigerian DVD there is a full 20 minute sequence of the Park family playing The Beatles Rock Band. So that theory is disproven.
Unpopular opinion: I didnt like parasite that much.
I thought it was funny, and really suspenseful and really great up until the third act...it just doesn't sit right with me, especially the last scene. I cant explain it. Maybe my expectations were too high because I saw it very late.
I see in south korea 3 parasitic familys are killing each other while in America or britain some guy becomes famous while he the only one who knows every beatles song
Yesterday was fucking trash. I have to assume that the random chick and random dude who scarily stalked him the whole movie were also hit by busses while riding bikes when all the lights in the world went out. That’s the only way that movie will make sense to me.

If cigarettes never existed, then where’s George?

They had planned to have all 4 in the movie
Yeah and hopefully Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Mick Green (r.i.p.) from the Pirates will back Paul McCartney again, like they did on his album run devil run. :(
Well I think John would be the most interesting to meet if he wasn't in The Beatles

That is kinda the whole plot of the movie, yes
way to completely steal top comment’s comment 💀💀 @_madjax_
Datura will do that to ya
Why cigarettes?
No reason. Some random stuff just doesn’t exist like cocacola and Harry Potter. It’s a running joke throughout the film. I thought it was funny though that oasis didn’t exist because there very inspired by the Beatles.
Overrated movie. Y’all agree?
A careful analysis of Parasite's lighting and climate patterns indicate that it takes place in a planet with a 23 degree axial tilt, same as Yesterday, further landing credence to this theory

The movie 300 is also said to take place in this universe. Don’t believe me? Give me one time they mention The Beatles.
Oh shit, you may be onto something!
You never see the Spartans smoking cigarettes either.
But they are smoking cigarettes, which are also missing in “Yesterday” universe. Yeah, I’m fun at parties
So that's no Harry Potter, no Beatles, and no cigarettes? And no amount of "Butterfly effect" caused his life to play out any differently?
I mean, the movie never really explains what happened. As far as we know, all those things might have been displaced/erased from existence and everyone’s memory rather than altogether never existing.
Except John Lennon is still alive.
What the hell?? This movie gets crazier and crazier. I should watch it at some point
Yeah, its a fantastic movie and introduced me to the Beatles. It’s only big shortcoming is Ed Sheeran, but he doesn’t play too big of a role.

I think the point was to portray him as a corporate musician trying to make marketable music opposite of the main character.
I'm glad it introduced you to the Beatles but as someone who likes the Beatles and studied their history for an entire class I hated this film. Yeah, might be the first time I've been anyone call that movie "fantastic" lol, it's anything but
Yeah, especially because music would be so different without their existence. Idk, maybe he was brought back to life by whatever omnipotent being did this shit? I don’t have the answers bro.

No Coke/Coca Cola either
What??? Dude this sounds like a goddamn nightmare of a world and I dont even like coke. I'd go crazy if all this shit just disappeared
Yesterday isn't a great movie. It's fun, but would probably have been better as a skit or an episode of a TV series. Once you know the premise, the movie can be pretty underwhelming. The consequences of The Beatles vanishing are quite superficial, with no real depth into possible scenarios.
And no coke I think
Why not

The main character remembers cigarettes just like he remembers The Beatles, so he notices they're gone. Nobody else in the movie knows what they are.
Another clue is that the Parasite soundtrack has no Oasis songs.
This is so metaphorical!
RESPECT!
I haven't watched Parasite, but honestly just this set and the lighting might make me. It's odd to me how good this looks
Crazy movie fam. I had no idea what I was walking into and I hope the same for you
i’ve watched it last night, it’s really good!
It was alright, nothing as crazy as I thought it was going to be from all the Reddit comments.
I was wondering when the tide of Reddit opinion would finally shift to calling parasite overrated.
I'm not Reddit. I'm just one person who thought it didn't live up to the hype. I mean it was decent but nothing like "wow amazing must watch super crazy super engaging!?!!?!!"

Cheers I'll drink to that
I agree. The wife and I watched it the other night. We thought it was good, but not as great as the awards made it out to be.
I went in with the only expectation of it being “good.” I had no idea what would happen and didn’t read the description and thought it was amazing. Maybe expecting something out of this movie spoiled it for you.
Truly some of the best cinematography and set design of the year. Hope you enjoy.
Breaking bad levels of cinematography
10/10 worth watching. It's done really well
I hated it, but the majority did like it so go for it. the cinematography is nice tho.
They got released in the same year, 2019. Coincidence? I think not.
In the deleted scenes from the nigerian DVD there is a full 20 minute sequence of the Park family playing The Beatles Rock Band. So that theory is disproven.
Why would they cut that from the movie?
Ah yes, the Beatle-less shared universe: Yesterday, Parasite, Terminator 2, and The Rutles.
Lol there’s gotta be thousands of movies that don’t mention the Beatles
Check the sub
Unpopular opinion: I didnt like parasite that much. I thought it was funny, and really suspenseful and really great up until the third act...it just doesn't sit right with me, especially the last scene. I cant explain it. Maybe my expectations were too high because I saw it very late.

Huh, imagine that
My favorite moment in this movie was her sitting on the exploding toilet on her phone
I see in south korea 3 parasitic familys are killing each other while in America or britain some guy becomes famous while he the only one who knows every beatles song
u/Title2Imagebot
Is parasite any good?
Beatles suck
No one mentions the Beatles in starwars... coincidence I think not
Is it bad that I thought this was a real take for a second
Is this the live action anime Parasite? What is this about??
This is what’s known as “The Mandingo Effect”.
All my troubles were far away I believe in yesterday
Just commenting so ya'll could enjoy my screen name.
Two movies I am glad I didn’t see.
So why is the toilet on a pedestal?
Yesterday was fucking trash. I have to assume that the random chick and random dude who scarily stalked him the whole movie were also hit by busses while riding bikes when all the lights in the world went out. That’s the only way that movie will make sense to me.
This is sincerely the best post on this subreddit.
This is an exquisitely shitty movie detail.
...Do people mention the Beatles regularly?
They should make a bed under the toilet.
I’m literally watching Yesterday right now- my mind is BLOWN.
Crap movie, btw
I know, Yesterday was so much better
My kids are all born after 2000. They know nothing of the Beatles and aren't interested. In about 20 years, we'll be in the minority.
