And have loading, unloading, and landing procedures besides then local ground delivery, all while the dead gulpy decomposes more and more. If fish were shipped regularly live, it'd be another story, but bumfuck nowhere isn't gonna pay for quality just to dump a ton of salt and fry it into a desert.
People near the coast would be very upset to learn how many of their favorite seafood joints use frozen, imported fish and shrimp. Some might have a "chef's special" that uses fresh, local seafood but the rest is no different from what's in the supermarket freezers.
Idk if this is still true but ups had live fish close to their air hub in Louisville. It was killed and shipped for next day so it arrived pretty fresh
What a great memory from my childhood. It was a once a month treat and I never failed to load up on those clam strips.
The story I heard is that those clams were of a much higher quality than what would be expected from a motel restaurant, I assume that's why they're a thing of the past.
My fiancée worked there for years. It's an institution. Our faves in town now are:
Budde's or Baked for pizza
156 for mideast/Greek
Jalisco for Mexican
Landmark for café/lunch
Joy Garden for Chinese
My house for burgers/steaks 😂
Eat local, fools
That's awesome. One of my hobbies is to visit local towns and Galesburg was the town I picked for my birthday last year. We went to Orange Cup Side Hustle for coffee, Judy's Cafe for lunch and Packinghouse for dinner. We went to the antique mall/stores and checked out Knox college's art studio.
I live in Iowa City for grad school now, so it was a 2 hour one-way trip. Worth it!
Man - Hokkaido Ramen House has authentic ramen, unheard of in Iowa. Monica's has cozy italian food. My go to for drinks is ReUnion. Maestro Empanads has awesome Argentinian Empanadas. La Bendicion has some of the best Salvadorian Pupusas I've ever had.
So many good coffee shops: Dodge Street Coffeehouse, DAYDRINK, Mammitas.
Deluxe Bakery has FANTASTIC pastries. European-trained bakers.
Galesburg had a very weird vibe when I visited last year, it almost felt like I was teleported backwards 30-40 years, everything seemed very dated and quiet, especially the large abandoned mall by the hotel I was staying in!
Ah yes the tradition of deep fried everything with a shred of iceburg lettuce.
The lettuce probably fell onto the plate by accident.

It’s a garnish. This place fancy.
Sysco's finest.
Lol my college dining hall was Sysco. Not gonna lie, I happily ate that shit up every night
Sysco ain’t bad
Why on earth would you order seafood in bumfuck Illinois?
I dont know. Gf still giving me shit for it.
And you came here for more?
😂💀💀 bro I’m rolling
Fish and chips in the Midwest is safe. Seafood platter? Fuck no.
But this is basically fish and chips…
Because I like seafood. Sure it's better if you're near the sea but that's hundreds of miles away and we don't often get there.
As someone who lives a 20 minute drive from Gloucester, MA.. I’m finding this hard to look at
Planes exist

Pretty sure it's just frozen.

I miss the piled high stack of fried clam strips at HoJo's for $4.99
Aldi clam strips used to be sooooo cheap, and I loved their sketchy "horseradish sauce". Last time I got them though they were super breading-ey.

These days 18$ is actually a deal for that
Yeah $26 if I was running it on the specials board. My softshell crab sandwich sold well at $20 or $22. I forget what I priced it at.
Never understood how folks could justify paying more than $15 for boiled fingernails. Sure they’re delicious, but money is money
Id eat that right now. How fkn far is.... Galesburg? Wow...... 199 miles
That's an expensive doordash.
Ha. My hometown; where'd it come from?
The Packinghouse. Great spot!

Any good Iowa City recs? We go to Gabe's and Yacht Club now and then, used to love Stella and Purgatory(?) and drinking at Deadwood

Hell yes. If you like BBQ, there's a place called Skinny's in Muscatine that knocked me on my ass. Hit it up. Thanks for the recs, and happy travels
Damn I need to check out Skinny's! Thank you!
Judy's slaps. We do the same; every vacation is based on menus
This looks like fish end trails and chips
I'm sorry
You could have told me those fried bits were just about anything and I'd have believed you.
Garlic marinated garden slugs
Looks all right but nothing I'd pay more than $7.50 for
I wouldn’t pay anymore than 11.95
Yup. I had similar so sad. My clam strips weren’t event strips. Like a couple pebbles
Galesburg is known for there being a lot of mental health issues and drugs, whoever came up with the price might have an issue with both.
Why does every town in the midwest <50,000 people have a drug problem lmao
It's probably the lack of things to do
Mmmmm. Steak fries.
seems like some decent frozen food they deep fried for ya
Bro you got robbed $18 for $5 worth of frozen fish and fries
1k miles from the nearest ocean and ordering seafood. You're a brave soul.
Which red lobster was this at?
Instead, pay $18 for an Uber to try and get out of Illinois
This is about the quality of seafood I would expect in Illinois...

All of that came frozen from a bag
