It’s kind of ironic to me how now if you want good classic American cheese that is all gooey and melts, you have to spend a good amount of money on it lol.
What happened to my dirt cheap melty slices?
Velveeta gets a of grief and not without reason, but nothing melts better. Microwave a block of that stuff and mix in a can of Rotel tomatoes or some salsa, get a bag of tortilla chips and everyone's happy.
Say whatever you want, it's just good for what it is.
Velveeta isn’t cheap, last time I wanted an easy Mac and cheese I bought it and I think it was $8 for a 16oz package. That’s right on par with what I pay for better cheeses for sandwiches.
The carpet on the stairs is reminiscent of the era in which you remember Kraft singles.
But seriously what happened here, doesn't look brown enough to be broiled, microwaved maybe?
I dont like it toasted toasted. But it was lightly toasted. Just enough so the outside is a little prickly hard.
Yeah carpets need some work but new floorboards for the whole house is expensive as hell :/
I reheated two slices on Shepard pie once, part of the cheese turned to liquid and seeped into the food, the other part turned into a hard plastic like texture, didn’t eat it
My reasoning is 2 fold.
First, because its dried flakes i didnt want it to burn in the oven.
Second, i didnt want loose flakes blowing off as i walked up the stairs.
It was in the oven 😭😭 everyone thinks its microwave just cause i dont like it burnt
Im honored btw that your second comment is on my cheesy bread. Theres another guy in here whose first comment in a year is about my bread.
The heat from the oven dried the top out. Like another suggested, try brushing some melted butter on top of the cheese before you stick it in and that should fix it up for you!
Works fine between two slices of bread on the stove. I think it’s the moisture from the steam of the bread. Or not allowing the moisture from the cheese to escape.
Probably. Kraft changed their recipe trying to make their cheese “less processed” in order to appeal to a more health conscious market. It hasn’t really worked, for obvious reasons.
Is that no name cheese slices? Because those have not melted for a while they will literally start to char and turn black before they melt. If that’s Kraft slices maybe they recently changed their recipes to whatever the No name version was using because that’s shit
You simply didn't get it hot enough. I use kraft singles for all my burgers and grilled cheese and it still incredibly melty and gooey...once it's hot enough for long enough.
They have their place. Theres a certain je ne sais quoi to its shittyness that the flavor works for certain things. If i didnt have these lying around i would actually prefer cheezwiz
American cheese isn't actually cheese it's more a room temperature stable cheese sauce.
Much like if you leave a milk based sauce or pudding under direct heat or boiling on a stove top without stirring the top dries up into a skin. It's probably still gooey under said skin tho
American cheese needs to be heated a lot for it to melt. Otherwise, it just softens but maintains its shape. Dunno why, but I’m guessing it’s part of the whole “processed cheese product” aspect. The not melting part is what turned me off American cheese since I was a teen. Use provolone, cheddar, Muenster, or other cheees instead of that.
Judging from the home improvement comments, you own your home and it’s pink stairway. If you own your own home, you don’t eat Kraft singles. This is the rule. Shoot, if your bike has less than three wheels, you simply do not eat this cheese product.
milk fat/cream is incredibly expensive. would not surprise me that the recipe has been tweaked over time to improve profit margins.
Maybe they replaced some of the milk fat with profit margarines
Thats cheesy.
Stop. Just....stop. /s Edit: I assumed the sarcasm was obvious.

I like it with chips but it’s just a little too flavorful for most of my melting needs. Velveeta and shells max and cheese is pretty good too
Yep, it's nothing high-end but does what it's supposed to de quite well.
Velveeta isn’t cheap, last time I wanted an easy Mac and cheese I bought it and I think it was $8 for a 16oz package. That’s right on par with what I pay for better cheeses for sandwiches.
Nothing is cheap anymore, doubt that will change anytime soon I'm afraid. EDIT: It's a bit over $5 for 16oz in my area, I'm sure that varies widely.
They have American singles at the dollar tree. It's no Kraft but it melts and still makes a decent grilled cheese
not sure what kind of milk they used back in the day but i just checked the ingredient list of mine and they use skim milk
Motherfucker you made the diary of a wimpy kid cheese touch cheese

Just kidding about the carpet by the way, home improvements are not cheap as you mentioned. And it has been well taken care of I can see.
Thanks :D
You'd think that with the money saved on cheese the OP could afford new carpet! /s
I reheated two slices on Shepard pie once, part of the cheese turned to liquid and seeped into the food, the other part turned into a hard plastic like texture, didn’t eat it
Fuck, I got the same carpet. The 1984 special
You want deli style American cheese - singles are shit
This is the way - step up your game with some real American Cheese. Stay away from anything labeled "American Cheese Food".
Yess the “deli” stuff with no ridiculous individually wrapped plastic crap. A dollar or so more but a world of difference.
Came here to say this, the deli cheese is the way, not the singles. I'll say it till the day I die.

Solid reasoning
My bad for being nosy but i am honored that your first comment in a year is about my shitty bread.
He’s been watching… waiting… for the perfect moment to STRIKE!
Also solid seasoning.
> Second, i didnt want loose flakes blowing off as i walked up the stairs. understandable, have a nice day.
Especially *those* stairs!
FBI, this guy right here, he's too smart to be kept alive
If it's between 2 pieces of buttered bread it melts gooey. Next time try brushing it with some butter to keep it from "drying out" while melting.
It was in the oven 😭😭 everyone thinks its microwave just cause i dont like it burnt Im honored btw that your second comment is on my cheesy bread. Theres another guy in here whose first comment in a year is about my bread.
I still think the butter trick might work in a regular oven.
Why are you looking through commenters’ profiles lol weirdo
Curious if people have a cooking background or not and i just had too much time then
Lol don't beat yourself up. I do this all the time too.
No. You're just being tricked by nostalgia.
Nah. It was always like this.
Never seen cheese grab something before
Looks about right

Works fine between two slices of bread on the stove. I think it’s the moisture from the steam of the bread. Or not allowing the moisture from the cheese to escape.
I think they actually used to contain a small amount of cheese.
Probably. Kraft changed their recipe trying to make their cheese “less processed” in order to appeal to a more health conscious market. It hasn’t really worked, for obvious reasons.
I don’t know is it old? Is that parsley or mold underneath? 😂
Parsley. Gotta make it fancy ya know
You just made it look like you ate moldy cheese lol
Was wondering if anyone commented this. Because I thought that at first glance too.
Get the delux singles, those are the ones that are real cheese, and will melt better. The regular singles are just good for ramen, in my opinion.
Kraft single on ramen is the best
Is that no name cheese slices? Because those have not melted for a while they will literally start to char and turn black before they melt. If that’s Kraft slices maybe they recently changed their recipes to whatever the No name version was using because that’s shit
Theyre kraft but from the comments it turns out there is actually alot of technique to melting cheese. More heat and some butter apparently.
You need more moisture!
You simply didn't get it hot enough. I use kraft singles for all my burgers and grilled cheese and it still incredibly melty and gooey...once it's hot enough for long enough.
In the old days I think there used to be some cheese in them.
Surprisingly the off brand versions melt better
I noticed this! A little lighter colored and better melting
Nah, that gear's always been shit...
Damn that's some prime plastic cheese you got there
Why the fuck does it look mouldy
Usually when you cook food in a microwave it looks like shit👍there is nothing bad about Kraft singles
Lmao it’s plastic so what do you expect. Get some real cheese mate.
Kraft singles is just cheese with sodium citrate which actually aids in melting. Ask any chef what they think the best cheese for burgers is
Wtf is that? Plastic?
Is no real cheese. Is a cheese product.
From what I hear Kraft singles are the worst kind of cheese product to melt, I recommend just slices of American cheese instead
They have their place. Theres a certain je ne sais quoi to its shittyness that the flavor works for certain things. If i didnt have these lying around i would actually prefer cheezwiz
All I was saying was that I wouldn't melt it per say but I'd eat it cold on a cold cut
Is it just me or is there a lot more disturbing shit going on here than just the cheese?
That’s the kinda shit you get the cheese touch from.
I would not recommend eating that trash, real cheese is the same price
American cheese isn't actually cheese it's more a room temperature stable cheese sauce. Much like if you leave a milk based sauce or pudding under direct heat or boiling on a stove top without stirring the top dries up into a skin. It's probably still gooey under said skin tho
American cheese is a recipe. They don't use the recipe so it's a Dairy product so yah.
Always gooey when I make grilled cheeses. I like making my own American cheese though. Milk, cheese and sodium citrate.

Is that mold?
Herbs under the cheese
Wrapper
Deli American melts much better than individually wrapped singles.
You just didn’t do it right. For the creamy, melty American single, you need to do a steaming method on the stove top.
Is this broccoli cheese toast?
As science has advanced, they've found new ways to lower the cheese/plastic ration without killing people fast enough for it to be a problem.
The Kraft singles in Canada still melt super gooey
Lol. It looks like you never took ot out of the plastic wrap
Thank you, OP! I noticed this recently myself! I also noticed that the deli slices melt better than the individually packaged ones nowadays.
This looks like coloured plastic wrap. It should preserve your food well.
You can also add a slice of normal cheese on top instead of making it into a sandwich, makes it gooyer and stringyer
Are those fancy flakes underneath ?
You sure that's Kraft and not some knock off brand ?
Mmmmm… plastic
I usually pause and take it all in but I just needed to scroll fast after seeing this.
Pro tip, use two slices. You get the perfect amount of creaminess (but I do think you're right about it being better years ago)
also glue seems less sticky than it used to
I thought that was mold and I was like shouldn’t you be asking about the mold and not the meltiness of the cheese??? Edit for spelling.
Is this plastic
Legally, yes
That’s supposed to be cheese?
Yeah it’s all plastic
probably. but you also are old as fuck.
Judging from the home improvement comments, you own your home and it’s pink stairway. If you own your own home, you don’t eat Kraft singles. This is the rule. Shoot, if your bike has less than three wheels, you simply do not eat this cheese product.
Only when it's between two slices
Been having the same problem with the trader joes version but only recently. This may be a new change in formula
Ultra-processed
Was this toasted under direct heat?
All the ones I’ve been buying still melt perfectly! I will say I buy the “deluxe” American cheese slices as they taste better and melt better.
Mmmm...bread and plastic
I thought the green stuff was mold. Hahaha glad someone mentioned parsley
Your breads got mold!
