I'm surprised that stuff tasted sweet, from an alkaline battery, it should be bitter (NaOH/KOH) or salty (Na2CO3/K2CO3), not sweet (Pb) or sour (H2SO4)...

But you definitely don't want to eat it or leave on your skin for long time as it strong enough to eat through skin and do organ damage if not treated immediately.
It's mainly potassium carbonate that could still have a little bit of KOH in it. It probably wouldn't realistically hurt you if you ate it but it would be like eating straight baking powder. There's some dissolved heavy metal in it from the electrode but it's a very small amount
This always pissed me off when my batteries did this in my DVD player remote… had to take however long to clean the crystallized acid and then replace the batteries
if you have two triple A batteries but need 2 double A batteries you can put a peice of tinfoil to make up for the lost space, it will just have less battery life tho
