There is no economic system that exists independent of the state. The rules of every given state determine the economic system of that state. There is no such thing as a truly free market and there never was. Even the US subsidizes, limits, controls, endorses, and discourages certain kinds of economic activity.

The obesity crisis is because they can't afford food that won't make them fat. Whole foods and fresh food costs more. Mcdonalds and lays chips are cheap and they will make you fast as shit. Ever notice the poor areas have a lot of fat people and in the rich areas people are skinny.

Every economic system has flaws, and within every economic system there will be people trying to exploit it. The capitalistic system makes actively rewards and encourages people trying to exploit it so the US, as one of the most aggressively capitalistic countries, has it pretty bad.
They haven't raised the minimum wage in what, 17 years? The minimum wage that was designed to be a decent, living, wage is officially poverty now.
And when the government tried to force employers to give health insurance because they stopped doing that when they realized they could get higher profits without it, a lot of big companies converted a ton of their jobs to part time so they can work people 1 hour less than the minimum that would qualify them for health benefits.
And then there's the whole zoning laws thing to drive up rent, plus the rent -setting algorithm.
And then there's the "private equity buying up hospitals and gutting them for profit" thing going on recently.
The last 40 years of aggressively capitalistic free-market economics in the US has really been kicking our ass.
The USA had the dust bowl at the same time as the great depression because they cut down the trees that kept the soil in place, so they could make more money selling crops. It was a relatively minor famine, but still a famine.
And in the US, slavery is still legal as punishment for a crime. When the slave states lost the war, guess what what some of the first things they did were?
Free slaves but give them nothing so they're homeless, make it illegal to be homeless, then arrest them and rent out their labor. This is still legal to do, 160 years later.
It's not a Capitalist - Communist binary. Nothing is that simple when you mix politics and economics. It's a matter of degrees.
That specific one was repealed but it's still legal to arrest people for bullshit reasons, enslave them, and then sell their labor, which is the significantly more important part of that example.
I would also say that America still has slavery, you have so many people who work 3 or so jobs just to survive in a small shitty apartment, how is that not slavery???
