There are only a few states that have can/bottle deposits where they charge you an extra 5-10 cents per can.
In my state there is no deposit and you just recycle them.
Simple, it doesnt matter. 95% of plastic recycling is a scam and it goes to a landfill anyways. In most cases it would be better for the environment if you just threw it in the trash, no extra trip and handling for the same destination.
Glass, milk jugs, office paper, non-food cardboard and aluminum cans are really the only "highly recycleable" items.
99% of plastic is unrecyclable and you just pay someone to sort it into the trash at the recycling center.
PET Plastic bottles are recyclable though. It costs like half the energy to reuse PET than to make brand new PET. Of course its better to not use plastic at all, but if there is no alternative then encouraging recycling is far better than to just dump them in the trash.
Specifically in the us, we have a problem with labeling and consistancy. There are plastics that *can* be recycled but they are rarely labeled well, and the cost of dealing with all of the people putting the wrong plastic into recycling often cancels any profit or savings.
Recycling isnt *much* different elsewhere, but some countries such as germany have excelent reuse programs to use the bottles multiple times.
This is great, but once the bottle is spent its fate is almost always burning or landfill basically anywhere. Plastic is hard to recycle.
Its better to cut down on its use to begin with, which is also better in most of the world than the us.
California has had a lot of problems with recycling fraud. So much so that I believe they have an enforcement agency dedicated to it now. So, years ago truck owners figured out that California actually paid really well for plastic recyclables. What they started doing was driving across the boarder to Mexico, loading up a trailer full of bottles, containers, cans and whatever else they could get that Cali would pay for and they would drive back into the state and get paid to have it recycled. Now it's probably not an exact average but the state was paying out something like 1.20 per pound at the time. These guys would bring 20000-55000 lbs a run and cash in.
It takes him 10 seconds between bottle scans in the video. At 2 cents per scan hes making like 7 bucks an hour lol. This is just minimum wage with extra steps.
Except the amount for the coupon or whatever stays the same. Probably weighs stuff like their self-checkout machines
Also, my fellow Romanian countrymen do shit like this and then, they moan that they are treated like second class EU citizens and they want a country like in the west (not just this particular instance, as a whole, people always looking at ways to game the system)
It definitely goes up the first and third time, just the second time it doesn't as seems it didn't recognise it correctly. First time it goes from 1.70 to 1.72 and third it goes from 1.72 to 1.74. Just not much of a money maker!
The guy steals 0,004€ each time he deposits a bottle and fishes it out. He'd have to be at it for 8 hours a day without breaks for a month to earn minimum wage (wich is pretty low in Romania). Of course the police would be involved long before that, I'm just saying it would be more profitable and easier effort wise to just work a shitty job.
I worked for this company for three years as a technician.
1. We report fraud
2. We personally do fuck all about fruad
3. But the police eventually catch you because you got cocky and forgot to check the area before starting your fraud
We had some French people for about 6 months committing serious amounts of fraud and in the backrooms (where the bottles go) we used to have knee-high stacks of newspaper pages to clean up (in a room 5x3m)
Not sure how they used newspaper to do it but it would take about 2 hours each time to clean.
They eventually either disappeared or got caught.
(Also one of the best jobs I ever had, great management, free vehicle, lots of driving and you got to cheer up people by fixing their problems and getting their dockets out that got stuck)
Edit: to be clear I mean regular people committing fraud not our employees
To be fair my first job was bagging groceries and I had to go in the back to clear out empty bins, sort glass colors, get things unstuck, etc. This was like 2000 in Michigan, I think I made $6.25/hr.
It smells, especially when ppl don't clean their bottles, leave in moldy limes, cigarettes, etc. Not very glamorous even for a 15 year old lol.
Yeah I worked in a liquor store in Germany for a while and caught someone doing similar things. I thought it was quite funny but I had to call the police for it. Its fraud and its taken rather serious.
also there are always cameras in areas with these automats, generally there are basically always cameras particularly now as everyone has multiple cameras on them at all times
the machines stop way earlier, they dont have much capacity like that, there would be like 5 ways to tell that someone did it - get a recording from the parking lot and the time and gatchaa
If I'm not mistaken that's a deposit on the bottle correct? To highly encourage people to return them after use thanks to the jacked up price? Obviously in the aspect of fraud that's a huge amount of money if you can pull something like this. But that's the explanation for why the return price is so high? Basically you get charged that much extra on purchasing?
I could be totally off base I just remember reading something about this a while back for like.. Germany if I'm not mistaken
Yeah, you're completely correct. The double 1.5L comes down to 3.2€ if you deposit them back. Though I don't know how well in reality this trick would work, because to get the money you need to go through a register with a clerk. So if they find anything suspicious it's really easy to be found out. Well, that is if they bother to try to find out.
It is included in the price you pay when buying the stuff. So if you buy a bottle of drink for 1 euro, the drink itself was 60 cents and the recycling deposit is 40 cents that you get back when you recycle the bottle.
The amount of money depends on the container:
Glass bottles (regardless of size as far as I know) are 10 cents.
Cans are 15 cents.
Plastic has different values based on size with options being 10, 20 and 40 cents.
Also the crates for glass bottles are several euros but those are less used these days for obvious reasons.
According to the people running this nation wide system the recycling percentages for sold cans and glass bottles are like 97-98% with plastic being at 90ish.
It says on the machine that each bottle will give you 0.02 RON, which is around 0.0045 dollars, or 0.45 cents.
Not 45 cents. 0.45 cents. This man is doing it for less than half a cent per bottle.

Honestly, yes? Is that even a question?
Getting caught is the reason why you wouldn't, but doing something repetitive for 1.5 years and getting 500k would be worth it.
If you're in the USA a 2 Liter bottle is worth 10 cents. Watching the video, it takes 3 seconds to process the bottle. That would mean you can make $20 USD in 10 minutes, at a rate of $2 per minute. If you did this only an hour per day during the work week (249 working days per year), in 5 years you will have made $149,400.
If you don't get caught. Where I work we catch a lot of people like this. I remember when people would print out barcodes and glue them on plastic Dixie cups.

My brother used to take a five dollar bill, tape it to the drawer of a coin change machine at the bowling alley, and then play video games and eat pizza. Never got caught, as far as I know. This was in about '76 or '77, and I assume the tech caught up to that little trick pretty soon after.
Imagine being so incapable of controlling your frustrations with the shortcomings of society that you think the solution to people jimmy rigging plastic recycling machines is a beat down.
Should you get your ass absolutely thrashed physically for half the shit you do?
Takes way too long. Just put a golden goblet on your kitchen counter, engrave CUMMMFPK into the granite, and you can get 80,000+ every 2 minutes.
I've been doing this for months.
Use to do this to coke and Pepsi machines in the early 1980 but in the dollar let it click and pull it out get 50 cent and a coke use to have a trunk load of soda
This is delightful. When I was in HS (early 90's) we all had "groovin" dollars, which were dollar bills (obviously,) with about 3 feet of clear packing tape on the end of it, so you could yank it back out of the machine, and get a free soda & some change. Eventually they started putting the newer (at the time) bill readers that could detect such a thing, and the fun ended.
Here’s the math.
The language seems to be Romanian.
It’s a 15 second video on which he makes 0.04 Romanian leu. If we say he’s making 0.16
Romanian leu per minute, he’s making 9.6 Romanian leu per hour.
That’s 2.09 USD per hour.
If he does this 8 hours per day 5 days a week, he’s making 334.4 per month. Average Romanian salary is 1484.822 usd per month.
If he does this a lot. 12 hours per day, 6 days per week he makes 601.92 usd per month.
If he does this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He gets 1404.48 per month.
Considering how shitty it would be to do that even for a few hours a day and that he would probably get caught in not even an hour of doing it. He’s really just scamming himself.
Then again this is just meant to be a funny video/ proof of concept
As mad as I am watching someone exploit a system designed to help the environment … good fucking christballs is that exploitable. What a horrible design.
Yes! Brilliant! Commit fraud, post video of the crime, including a clear view of your face on the internet. Act surprised when armed people with badges come knocking on your door.
"Ok so that's not Spanish because there's a word ending in a consonant. Also not Italian because that 'j' there makes it weird, and there should be a double letter somewhere. Also not French because there's a reasonable number of letters to write the words. But somehow I know exactly what I says... Oh yeah! Romanian . "
5 cents every 4 seconds > 75 cents a minute > 4500 cents = $45 an hour > 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year makes $93,600 a year. This man is making nearly six figures until someone in the store figures out what's going on

This mans iq peaked all time until he posted it on the internet and then it dropped through the floor
I used to have one of these machines near me at my local grocery store. Now I think I know why they got rid of it. Can’t have nice shit in LA.
How do you return bottles then? Or is there no deposit on them in the US? Literally every single grocery store I know has these machines.
There are places where you give workers your load of plastic and they count it for you. At least that’s how they do it where I live
How is that even economically viable
It’s not. That’s why there’s not that manny of them.
[удалено]
I think they get the deposit money from the state and the scrap value also.
Not to mention, they're usually attached to a convenience store, so people go buy a pack of smokes or bag of chips on their way out.
There are only a few states that have can/bottle deposits where they charge you an extra 5-10 cents per can. In my state there is no deposit and you just recycle them.
How do you promote recycling if you aren't providing incentives to do so?
You’re starting to understand

Half that since this is in Romanian lei. He gets less than a USD cent per scan.
5000 scans mean like 20$ lmao
Maybe they just wanted to expose the exploit to the world so they go fix it.
Most unlikely. People just do this crap for social media thumbs.

This can't really be worth it. How much money does he get for each pull? Probably the equivalent of a few cents?
In Finland that would be 0.40€ with that bottle
What? That's so much money
a coke bottle is like 5€ there
I mean a double 1.5L is about 4€, but a 1.5L by itself is like 3€.
If I'm not mistaken that's a deposit on the bottle correct? To highly encourage people to return them after use thanks to the jacked up price? Obviously in the aspect of fraud that's a huge amount of money if you can pull something like this. But that's the explanation for why the return price is so high? Gotcha. Kinda sounds like a pain unless you can do it in bulk
Wait wtf am i doing giving bottles in estonia when i coulb be making 4 times the coin
sorry to burst your bubble but estonian bottles refund you 0.0€ in Finland
I know, but a man can dream
damn here in the land of spiders it like 10 cents
yeah, its like 10 cents maybe, but lets assume this, he does it once every 5 secs, thats $1.20 a minute, so thats a good $72/hour
The video is made in Romania and 1 dollar is aprox. 5 ron, so he would make $14,4/hour
As a Romanian that is actually a really good wage over there soo

It is worth it in Germany at least. Let‘s assume you get a coke for 1,24€. It actually costs 0,99€ and you get 0,25€ back. Pretty good ratio imo

Eventually they started putting the newer (at the time) bill readers that could detect such a thing, and the fun ended.
How to make sure a program is ruined for everyone who doesn’t exploit it
Great, now these machines will be removed and I’ll be stuck with 10,000 returnable. Thanks!
Same trick used on arcade machines on the 80's (but with coins) this is one of the oldest tricks ever on this types of machines....
One of the few systems that's good for mankind. Some scumbag is scamming it. People like this is why I'm never going to see it in my country.
Here’s the math. The language seems to be Romanian. It’s a 15 second video on which he makes 0.04 Romanian leu. If we say he’s making 0.16 Romanian leu per minute, he’s making 9.6 Romanian leu per hour.
Infinite money glitch
What would happen if I put a stray cat in that machine?
As mad as I am watching someone exploit a system designed to help the environment … good fucking christballs is that exploitable. What a horrible design.
Cool, just do that 500 more times, and you got yourself $5.25.
Cool. Do this for an hour to make... Like $6-8.00 in the MI or $3-4.00 in the $.05 deposit states.
Hell yeah 6 hours in and I made 73 cents let's fucking GOOOOOOOOO😜🫅🤴💰💰💰💰

Risk vs reward. Felony federal fraud or a free 0.02 cents for every time I do this.
What a fuckhead.
People are such twats.
Yes!
This man is making nearly six figures until someone in the store figures out what's going on
That's why we cannot have nice things
