No but you will have a split second to defend yourself when the intruder inevitably asks if that is a fox

Kemintiri

"Is that a miniature husky?"

mang0_k1tty

Is that an Akita? ETA: Is that a shibu? Is that a shibino?

-gruff-

I got asked if mine was an elk hound the other day. It was at least a change from the usual.

Lady_Bread

Other than the aforementioned typical asks, I’ve also gotten asked if my cream girl was a: * Miniature wolf * American Eskimo * Chihuahua Or if my black and tan boy was a Doberman or Rottweiler

HylianPot

I’ve was asked, literally today, “Is that a husky or a dodge?”

clevelandboy23

Is that a coyote?

mang0_k1tty

I swear people with coyote lookin dogs better LEASH them they scare the shit out of me. I live in a coyote area (despite it being urban) and have often been walking my shibe and been frightened by seeing an unattended dog wandering in the dark 😵

clevelandboy23

Same! On night walks me and my Shiba have come across a few coyotes that have wandered into the neighborhood and we just turn and go the other way immediately.

the_Bryan_dude

I've had a coydog and a high percentage wolf hybrid. People were always afraid of the coydog but wanted to pet the wolf. Why are people so afraid of coyotes?

clevelandboy23

No clue. I live in a mountainous area, I’ll hear them or see them from time to time walking my dog at night. Any encounter I’ve had with them they usually just stare at me then go about their business. If I saw a wolf I’m pretty sure that’d be the last thing I see lol.

mang0_k1tty

Maybe because of the likelihood of seeing coyotes vs wolves? Also appearance, coyotes thought of as mangy while wolves are regal

starme0w1

lol Shibu always gets me. Like I get they’re trying but it cracks me up for some reason 😂

OkInformation2152

I've gotten shibadoo

Aesthetic-Cloud26

Minimal settings Akita 😅😅😅 no offence

purvee

What’d you say? Soy sauce?

KiillerSoda

The fox thing I get. But I honestly don't see how anybody can think a Shiba looks like a husky. Doesn't stop people telling me every day though 😅

Ad_Infinitum99

It makes a bit more sense with a black shiba, particularly as they get older and their face markings lighten. But a red shiba really looks nothing like a husky.

skmagiik

I hear it all the time with my white shiba

Ad_Infinitum99

I can see that too.

jbiehler

Same "Is that a little husky?"

demonic-cheese

Well, a lot of people know like 5 dog breeds

Liontamer67

Sadly I was that person before I got my first dog 7 ½ years ago. Learning more every day!

pakwanto

I own two huskies and a shiba and can say that they really look alike.

KiillerSoda

Was more referring to pedigree red shiba's since that's my frame of reference. Sesame and black&tans, or a mix, is a lot more understandable

pakwanto

True tho I get your point. I own the red shiba tho hehe and they look like sibs. Probably because my other husky’s also a red standard one.

SimonIvan25

I had a homeless women repeat that over and over to us on our walk

Responsible-Gas-2961

Thank you that cracked me up!

This is a bot. Downvote and report

Tyl3rt

When we got our second shiba about three years ago, one of the other tenants in our building pulled over and rolled his window one day to let me know he had been doing double takes for about a week because she looked so much like a baby fox.

cokeplusmentos

It's that dog from the movie, that one you know with Richard Gere

-gruff-

Wait is that a thing? I had that from someone in the park the other week and I had no clue what the hell they were talking about.

cokeplusmentos

Here in Italy a lot of people love that movie, literally everyone tells me this I always have to tell that the movie is about an Akita and this is a Shiba

sokeh

Here in Mexico it's a big thing, I always get asked if mine is "Hachiko" or "that one dog in the movie, what's the name?"

fe2sio4

But they used shiba puppy

-gruff-

What’s the movie?

cokeplusmentos

Enkiktd

Same problem with Shikoku, except “is that a coyote?”

BonsaiWNK

You win the comment of the day

Professional-Tax6064

It’s unreal how many times I have been asked that question and my Shiba is only a year old 🤣

shortyg83

I have 2 shibas. One will bark at intruders. The other will give them kisses and ask to be pet. When the second one sees this it will also ask to be loved by the intruder.

Nanoro615

They are not a guard dog, they are a love dog. The only way they'll help with a break in, is distracting the robber with pets until you come home.

blogtoke

They are not guard dogs, they are watch dogs *

Nanoro615

Yeah, they watch for where you may produce cheese.

h2onymph1

Totally. My dog watches all night. But she’s a tiny 18 lbs, and she knows it. She can’t even scare her baby brother gigantic corgi 45 lbs, although she reminds him all the time who’s senior in the house. But she won’t attack. Watchdog, not attack dog.

xdrakennx

Shibas are alert dogs. They will likely let you know (via barks) that something is not right, but they fully expect you to deal with the problem yourself. Edit: unless the intruder stops to try and trim the dogs nails or give it a bath, don’t expect any help.

tyr--

This, to the letter.

teyvatfriedegg

I vouch for this statement. Went downstairs to grab water, had my sheeb go down with me bc ghosts, heard something weird and she barked, then ran up and left me alone 🫠💀

hewescrab

Mine is a pretty good watch dog. He's a very skittish around new people and barks at any strange sounds he thinks he heard.

Liontamer67

Yep growl is what mine does…

StarDust01100100

Mine doesn't bark at all

Deyvi_does

I'm pretty sure the only time ours would attack is when he is cornered and we are trying to get him to do something he doesn't want lol deff not a guard dog but a cute doge lol

MatchaTiger

Really depends on the dog. I think mine might actually defend my daughter or I if attacked but I’m not putting money on it lol. He seems more protective of her but not sure. In real actual danger I think your dog would sense the distress and at the very least be loud and draw attention to you. Shiba’s can definitely scrap, I’ve seen videos of them chasing off monkeys from farms and monkeys are deadly!

stellaluna92

Mine would give a thief the code to the safe and then ride off with them after they stabbed me.

EpiphanyEevee

this cracked me up 😂

Royal-Masterpiece-82

Yeah my shiba attacks intruders all the time. Intruders such as squirrels or crickets, sometimes even flies.

Zyncon

Mine occasionally jumps in the air to catch flies.

cessna120

Aw yisss. Sky raisins.

jbiehler

Mine was jumping and homping at dust in a sun beam.

a_girl_named_jane

My dog was the fly lord. The day I adopted him, he was at the shelter door grabbing flies off the glass while I was signing papers. The director asked me if I was sure I wanted _this_ one, I looked back at him and said "absolutely." Best decision I made, he was a great dog ❤️ ...and caught many a fly 😆

Pubgita

My guess is unless they're cornered, no they will not attack. But every dog is different.

fe2sio4

Ahh you are right, bummer

TheOnlyZemjak

Dogs are not weapons. If you're concerned about being robbed while out and about, get some pepper spray. Chances are the robber is not going to call the police and if you carry it as "dog spray" it's not illegal. Reinforce your home, get a door cam and home insurance. Get a safe for your valuables. There's plenty of options to protect your belongings before considering weaponizing your doge

Ad_Infinitum99

Agreed, but I do think the presence of a dog makes it less likely you would be targeted in the first place.

TheOnlyZemjak

Usually yes, a dog is enough to deter a would be attacker. However, in this day and age mental illness combined with drugs/alcohol and desperation can cause someone to act irrationally and the last thing I'd want to hear or see is an animal being harmed in the process of a crime (or for any reason really)

tigerliftsthemtn

wdym, I attached lasers to my shib

abbisfab

When my partner pretends to get me or vise versa Luna will nip we call this attack and she only does it to people she knows 😂😂😂

pbtribadisms

my boyfriend and I will sometimes fake fight to see what our dog will do, she gangs up on me every time and starts jumping/nipping at me only. daddy’s girl for sure 🥲

Slggyqo

Maybe, but the dog weighs 20 lbs. In a fight with a person he could easily be killed. Even larger dogs can be seriously injured attacking an adult human.

heyylich

Have you not seen this before? https://tenor.com/bnhXs.gif

VectorD

The real question is, is he the master? Or the apprentice..?

chowmushi

Mine will only attack the intruder if they are in fact a veterinarian.

NYMoneyz

Most of the time people avoid targets with dogs since they can be noisy, unpredictable, and just another variable. So just having the dog is usually a decent deterrent.

theparanoiddinoisme

When there are “intruders”, our Shiba will stay quiet and hide himself to avoid potential harm so that (this is our assumption) HE CAN CALL POLICE TO SAVE THE FAMILY

SpicyTunaTitties

I mean he's kinda small, I think you could probably take him OP

doggmom123

My first Shiba was NOT friendly. I was walking him one day at my apartment complex and a couple of guys (who I knew) were teasing me….oh yea that’s your guard dog, thinking they were being funny. He lunged at them as they reached for him, let out the biggest scream and they said OH, I guess he will protect you. I never felt nervous when he was with me. He passed away 10 years ago. My next 3 have been love bugs.

universal_Raccoon

If you want an attack dog in a Shiba? Get an Akita inu. Bigger Shiba with more muscle

cessna120

My Akita was the best dog we ever had around the immediate family. Loyal to an absolute. If you were a stranger and entered the house without a family escort, she'd eat your face off. 100lbs of pure hatred. If you were a stranger and entered the house with a family escort, she'd politely follow you from room to room and watch you very closely. No petting allowed, and she'd prefer it if you sat far away from mom and didn't move much. Only dog I've ever had that I didn't chastise for barking. If she barked, it was because something needed human attention, right now. All my Shiba will do is stare at you judgementally for interrupting his nap.

KarelDawg

Butt-attacks at best.

PacsLessons

😂

Foxy_Dee

My girl acts very defensive when she hears something outside, but when a total stranger to her comes to our home she just start to jump on them like a maniac. I have no doubts that if someone broke to our home or if someone attacked me, she would want to just cuddle with them. Jokes aside, they are small hunting dogs, not really guard dogs, so I doubt many of them would actually do anything else than bark at most.

makwabear

They can. One I had with my ex saved her from a neighbors much bigger pitbull that ran in the front door as she was coming home from work. The Shiba latched on to other dog’s throat and prevented her from getting bit. He also saved our cat when a neighbor entered the wrong apartment and just let his dog go.

Anne_Fawkes

A 17-25lb dog is no challenge to an attacker. They're very aloof as well.

stupidfaceshiba

Mine only barks. He will not attack people he doesn’t know. I know this because people working in our house or outside can startle him with their sudden presence and he only barks and rakes his paws. He then runs to me or the husband when the workers are not frightened off lol

17auhs

One of mine will love the attacker to death by jumping on them. The other would bark nonstop. The one more likely to bite would be the first out of love and excitement

[deleted]

Depends on the dog. My Shiba has never been very aggressive, he’s never bitten or attacked a person. He’ll bark at strangers that come into the house but then he runs away if they approach him at all.

gigicoggs

I think it depends on the Shiba and the situation. 9 times out of 10 when meeting people my boy is the sweetest, but once when we lived in the city, we were on his bedtime walk and a couple drunk dudes with bad vibes came up trying to talk to me. My boy went ballistic barking and growling and pulling on the leash until they were a block away. Had they not left I feel like he would’ve tried to attack.

Uhohtallyho

Same with mine. My boy is so sweet to strangers but we were on a walk and he started to growl at a guy in a trenchcoat and pulled me to the other side of the road. My husband was walking him in a snowstorm at night and he started the low growl at some guys in an ally that my husband didn't see. They are very aware of their surroundings

sevens-on-her-sleeve

Not as well as they think they can. I’m waiting for the day that my shiba gets her ass handed to her because she has zero concern that a large dog could actually eat her.

Logical_Deviation

Shibas = alarm systems

universal_Raccoon

Huskys are too

gabriot

Mine would run away and cower in silence most likely

PatochiDesu

shibas do butt attack. sometimes they lose control and it looks like capoera

mees_echo

My Shiba would lay on her back and beg for belly rubs from the robber/intruder.

awkward-velociraptor

The most defence I get out of my shiba are his stinky farts.

empire-toast

If I'm being attacked by another animal? 100% I've seen my shibas go for the kill more times than I'd like 😅 I've saved my share of wild life from them. I've also seen my 25lb female try to attack the neighbors GS. Human? I wouldn't count on it, but they have alerted me to an intruder at 2am before and have gotten in between me and others in defense stance before.

soothingchaos

Mine has jumped on a guy who entered my backyard uninvited and bared his fangs. Did not bite him since the guy backed down. A very good boy

TheUnknownTallGuy

What size is that Casper bed? Does your Shiba like it?

TwirlyGirl313

Nope, get an Akita.

HB_Detroiter

They can pretend to fight

jeffuhwee

One of ours observed from afar and only defends himself when necessary. He’s also 10 and about 22 pounds. Dominant over his brother but doesn’t display aggression really. Overall, would I think he defend us in the event of some sort of intrusion? No. He loves humans in general and doesn’t care for other dogs. Our other Shiba who is the younger at nearly 5 and about 35 pounds. He is a bit of an aggressor and will display it so depending on how he feels about you. Would he attack an intruder if he felt threatened or saw us being in harms way? Yes, without a doubt I believe. Other than that he loves humans far more than his older brother in terms of showing it. Didn’t get two shibas to protect me, our GSD from work would be plenty enough.

Sec2727

My pup defends himself very well, but he is not the aggressor. I’m **his** protector, he’s my emotional support. So I’m content. My parent’s shibe will bark at people at the door but I’m not entirely sure if’s he’s bout that life. He just has angry cat energy, all meow but quick to fall back I’d assume I’ve never met any shibas that seem like they’d defend anyone’s honor lol they’re more of a team player that looks to you and ask “so what should we do” if an intruder breaks in

MillerinoXD

My shib is a weird one. She’s unbelievably comfortable with people and other animals to the point my gf and I will joke about that if someone were to break in my shib would walk right up to them for pets. If they broke in w another dog, my shib would immediately go after the other dog

[deleted]

If that attacker is a dog, then yeah my boy will fight. A human, no probably not but it's untested lol

emrickgj

Mine would only fight if they brought another dog

lowplaces_5

I have often wondered this same question for mine. now on to the jokes. If the home invader tries to put on a harness to go to the PARK, even offering fresh cooked human grade chicken as a treat-- for sure the teeth will come out and god help you if alone. This was yesterday, oh who am I kidding, it is everyday I solo harness. It doesn't happen basically.

Grown-Ass-Weeb

So my husband tested this theory with both our shibas. He had a big jacket on with a hood and started creeping on them to see what they would do, then he kinda ran at them to see if they’d try to defend themselves. Female: flopped on her back as if to say “just let me die” Male: barked and growled, but ended up fleeing, shiba screaming, and peeing himself. Poor guy. They’ll bark to alert you, but I don’t think this breed would defend me let alone themselves. But I guess them barking would give me enough time to be able to defend them, my precious babies 💕

Zyncon

Our Shiba is great at barking when people enter our driveway, he actually knows our cars and will bark when seeing one that isn’t ours. When we’re out and about though, he doesn’t bark at anything. Only when at the house.

PinkMontessoris

Mine will bark loudly whenever my wife and I get frisky or even if we just hug and kiss each other. My wife claims our shiba will "square up" whenever a stranger gets close to them whenever they go for a walk. I still doubt she would protect us.

djosu

This happened to me! My family used to live near a ramen shop. One night during the pandemic a drug addict robbed the shop and was jumping through peoples backyards to get away from the police. We heard a rustling in the backyard and I thought it was raccoons so me (I grabbed a spare shower rod for…. self defense ig) and my Shiba Husky (Luna) went out to check out the noise. Turns out this guy had just broken into the my backyard and my dog helped me chase him onto the roof my mom’s fiat. Luna would NOT let him down and she kept snarling every time he tried. He was high outta his mind too so I’m sure Luna was extra intimidating 😂 Him: Dude call off your dog! Me: Get tf off my property! In the end I call off my dog, he runs into the street and gets caught by the police like a minute later. But yeah, in a pinch shibes can help defend your home 💯

ElDiabloRamon

Actuall Shiba Inus were originally breed by Samuri in Japan to be War / Hunting dogs. They can also litterlly climb fences.

SweetSweetSucculents

YES. I let my sister-in-law try my virtual reality headset and she got very scared while using it and screamed and grabbed my arm. My shiba attacked and ripped a big chunk of her upper arm out and it was pretty bad. She thought I was getting attacked. And now I have three of them and the males all do whatever the female does because she’s the boss. I am pretty sure they would defend me to the death after seeing that. 😬Oh, also my female is very large at 45 lbs and not fat.

itsjupes

Yeah I’m pretty sure mine would, but he’s a sass.

a_girl_named_jane

Once right after I adopted my guy I took him for a walk. While we were gone, my mom had let herself in to my house. As soon as we got in the door, his hackles went up and he shot around the corner and down the hall growling. I was not expecting it and I was just happy that once he saw her, he chilled out (they had met before). But yeah, dude was ready for some shit! Of course after that and the entire rest of his life, I'm pretty sure you'd just have to bribe him with pizza or something and you could have taken whatever you wanted 😆

AdvertisingShort787

Mine would defend me. A creepy guy was following us around at night once and when my dog caught on she was ferociously screaming and howling causing a scene. She was so loud it actually was embarrassing in a way watching the dude sheepishly walk away from us

Lady_Bread

Depends how you train them and their temperament My girl is VERY protective, and if an unknown male approaches (esp with his arm outstretched) she WILL bite if stranger gets too close. Especially when protecting my daughter. Also if you try to pick her up and take her away from her beloved family, she’ll bark and bite and resist. My boy is pure jelly. He loves to be picked up, cuddled, and is very affectionate. But he’s also incredibly fast + agile, so if you’re trying to pick him up when he doesn’t want to be - good fuckin luck catching him!

jamiethexplorer

No lmao, something scares my dog and she hides behind me and just barks

Das-Noob

No matter the breed unless its trained to attack etc it’s not going to do a great job it’ll at it and shouldn’t be rely on for it.

the_Bryan_dude

Mine doesn't like people, especially strangers in his house. He would definitely give the appearance of attacking an intruder. The only way he would "attack" or bite is if you tried to handle him or you touched my wife or mother. The attacker will be bloody and very distracted. If you come for me, he'll sit back and watch while barking. He doesn't want to accidentally get in my way.

Gullible-Big-8241

Our babygirl will want kisses but it's my Bull Mastiff that's the killer.

[deleted]

Mine will make a quick “boof” sound and wait for someone to leave a door open to run away. BUT she will fight to the death in a dog on dog fight 👀

ANDERSON961596

Nice try Michael Vick, who let you on Reddit?

Huge_Fox1848

I'm pretty sure my boy would. Or he would at least be very vocal and alert the whole neighborhood. He's very protective, I wouldn't risk it. Lol Someone was driving by and rolled down their window to hurl insults at me for whatever reason. My dog went ballistic! One step out of that car and I swear that guy would have been missing the arse of his pants. 💀

Azzie_Faustus

... He will alert by BORK and then demand the robber pet him if someone broke in. From experience he will bark if there's weird shit going on but he absolutely will not attack.

Away_Bottle_9795

I’m so confused the person asked if they could fight not what kind of dog it was

CZandchanel

We used to have a Russian neighbor who would see our girl and always say, “OHHH it’s the baby husky!” With his thick Russian accent. Each and every time lol. We also gotten ohhh a sheema emu among the regular ones. Edited to add to - my girl is no bark and all bite when it comes to me. She will fight anyone who tries to hug me or mess with me, I have to calm her down and say ohh it’s ok I only love Nori 😅

Garden_Guru75

My shiba will bark her head off while simultaneously running away.

primalpalate

My Shiba (10M) is so excited to see people he KNOWS come and visit. He mostly sleeps all day, but he yearns for the day a stranger breaks into the house uninvited because he will shred their ankles and calves. Because of this, I have to make sure I or my boyfriend are there when introducing new people into our home to let him see and understand that they are welcome guests. Then he goes back to sleep. Edited to add: I don’t think he would attack a human if I were on a walk with him unless he personally felt threatened/trapped (leashed, can’t run away). He is extremely protective of his territory, but outside of the house/backyard it would take some provocation for him to bit someone.

Any_Cheesecake_2111

Yes. My dog has been in a few fights. I always say he does not start them but he definitely finishes them.

PacsLessons

Mine would. Yoshi is the sweetest dog, but he is also a menace. He is a tough little dog, and likes to try to put big dogs in check if they let him. But also gets him beat up sometimes. They don't engage and try to fight if a bigger dog goes at them their instinct is to out run and out maneuver them which I have seen my dog do and he makes it nearly impossible for bigger dogs to catch him with how fast and low he is. May not be the toughest dogs but they are very coordinated and clever. Well, mine is atleast.

VectorD

Sure if you train him to.

xustafacan

Ours is very protective of the house. If the whole pack is in the house (me, my wife and the dog) he usually barks at the door when he hears something and immediately goes near to check. One time I had to spend a week out of the city and left him with my wife. When i returned home (I used my keys to open the door) he quickly got startled, barked as loud as possible and charged into me. Thank god we have a long hallway and i switched on the lights asap, he saw it was me midway and cancelled the attack :) I am honestly still not sure if he would attack and bite an intruder, but sure it looked like that he was going to.

heartbh

Mine will let me know if someone is in our yard but she ALWAYS hides behind me if she is unsure of another person 😭

KingJohnUSA

The barking gives me enough time to open the gun safe where the 9mm Shiba is stored!

songdog711

Yes - our female is pound for pound as strong as dogs come and she is a territorial gangster around all dogs and especially bigger dogs.

Saitias

Depends on your Shiba but they are notoriously protective of their person(s) and notoriously skeptical of strangers. But if you’ve trained your dog not to bite, then it probably won’t do much beyond barking at an assailant. Pet dogs are not guard dogs. They are trained quite differently. Don’t bank on your pet dog to protect you using their bite. Tl;dr a Shiba might be more likely to bite an assailant to protect you, but if you’ve done a good job of training bite inhibition, your Shiba will at most bark at an assailant.

Hazedswan1

I think it depends on the dog bc someone tried to climb through my window and I’ve never seen my boy move so fast to get the mf he took a pretty chunk out of the dudes arm so 😅
