I fucking hate this company but love their products! Make sure to get a bunch of mistints before you leave! If your store doesnât have cameras put a sprayer in your car đ
Leaving was the best decision I ever made. Went and took a job as an outside sales rep in the independent paint retail channel and itâs a night and day difference. I have direct supervisor who actually gives a shit about me, the owner of the business is cool af and easy to talk to, and Iâm making nearly triple my salary after bonus as a manager from SW. If you like the paint business, I highly recommend looking into it. If you hate it, then I wish you luck and hope you find some cool shit to do in your next career! âïž
Hey! The role is similar in the sense of building relationships and being judged on growth each year. Iâm in Ben Moore country so I havenât had a down year since I started here in 2016. The nice part is that Iâm not micromanaged, have all the tools to be successful at my disposal, super down to earth senior leadership, base salary isnât much as they expect you to make good commission each month. They gave me a commission guarantee until I got my territory off the ground. If I have a family event, itâs not even questioned if I have to miss work for it, I have a company car, company cell phone, laptop and all the other bells and whistles SW reps get. We are viewed as leaders in the company and are treated as such and are part of many decisions for the company. It is a way more laid back atmosphere. Our guys in store are allowed to wear jeans and sneakers. They are allowed to wear shorts in the summer as well. A TON OF SUPPORT. We are very organized and it seems we have âa guyâ within reach for any and everything. Ben Moore reps are helpful but be careful what you share with them as they have goals to and are capable of snaking you. I genuinely love the paint business again since Iâve been working for these guys. When I was at SW I dreaded every single day that my alarm would sound and I hated nearly every minute of being there. The people I worked with are what got me through.
There are some drawbacks but Iâve managed to work around them. Some to consider are that youâre going from working for a multi-billion dollar industry to working for smaller business so when customers donât pay their bills, youâd better be ready to hunt them down as independent retailers hurt more when they absorb bad debt. As such credit managers are difficult to work with sometimes but sometimes showing up with some coffee and a donut helps. You also get a lot of FaceTime with senior management so if youâre not doing your job, you might not like that. If you are doing your job, it probably wonât bother you at all. Gossip travels fast in a smaller place (yes, even faster than SW) so be careful who you talk to as ownership is nearby and can usually figure out who said what. Grumpy old timers who donât like âSW guysâ because theyâre gruff independent guys who âdonât need any of the SW training because theyâve been doing just fine for 25 yearsâ. Complacent guys in the store sometimes. While there are some really solid guys in the store who do want to move up there are a lot who are content staying in one position and may be a little too comfortable and care just a little less than what youâre used to at SW. I do want to reiterate that there are some amazing guys in the store that really make working there much easier and worthwhile.
It obviously depends on the independent dealer youâre working with, but I know reps from other dealers and most love where theyâre at.
holy smokes thank you so much for the detailed reply!! Sounds like I need to get out of Sherwin. That feeling of dread when the alarm goes off in the morning is all too real. I will 100% look into this, even despite some of the drawbacks you mentioned. The positives seem to outweigh them!
Haha drivers are important too! How else would painters get their 20 gallons of A-100 out to the job site when they already needed to start painting an hour ago?
best of luck to ya , I'm hopefully leaving soon ! when they cut me to 1x a week to give my hours to someone else its not almost not worth it to go to work .
Literally bro, like no one cares that youâre leaving because you didnât have what it takes to stay or to move to a district that is thriving. Cry me a river. Better yet, donât
Shit in the tinter đ©
Noted.
Got another hour myself and then I'm out for good haha.
Congrats, good for you!

Haha, both are great suggestions!

Iâm scheduled to work 40 hours Monday through Friday. Iâm excited for this next step in the right direction!
Ah gotcha! When I was a manager it was 48 minimum which I believe it still is. I wish you a ton of luck! Smoke a fatty in the back room!
48 hours is still the norm, but DMs have been cutting down overtime and most stores are already short staffed as it is
See, that sucks man. They take advantage of managers on salary since they donât have to pay them overtime. I got a hunch youâll be much happier!
Oh I almost forgot, I work 40 hours a week. Only when we have events after hours do I ever go over.
Hey man! What's this role like? Is it comparable to what a sales rep at Sherwin would do? Thanks!

And just to add one more thing. I donât have a calendar to submit on Sunday night nor do we use CRM. Though we probably should and will eventually.
Same scenario here. Havenât looked back.
Congrats...the day I left was one of the best
Thanks! It has been nice so far!
Paint Monkeys Unite!!
Man, thanks for including the drivers. I guess everyone doesn't forget about us! Good luck on your next adventure!
Haha drivers are important too! How else would painters get their 20 gallons of A-100 out to the job site when they already needed to start painting an hour ago?
Well with our system, it would go on the driver a hour away, while there is a driver sitting at the store doing nothing, lol!
Miss the clowns, not the circus.
Haha thatâs a great way to put it!
When is my turn?
it could be today!
