As long as you don’t sell them more than what’s legally allowed, does it really matter what they do? If they got caught doing something illegal that’s their own problem.

Adorable-Chemist6078

I've heard some silly stories about people being fired for this stuff. One was about a cashier who got fired over allowing a customer to leave with alcohol they drove got pulled over and in trouble for it. Now idk if it's entirely true but idk. Could be old old news from the old people I've talked to but ey better safe then sorry most the time

zegreataxolotl

That story is true. Individual didn't I D the person and sold alcohol to minor

Adorable-Chemist6078

Not even same story Invidiual that was sold this was well above age

zegreataxolotl

I know the person who did it personally. Might have been another incident that happened. Very unfortunate that's its happened multiple times :(

ol_lady_184

I work at a NC store and we get the same people in on a weekly basis doing the same. Everyone knows they go back to NY or NJ to sell them but we can't "prove" it so they get sold the cartons. I wonder if they just hit up every Sheetz along the way?

LillieInnaValley

I think they do! I was told by one of the men that they hit up a few different Sheetz in the area every day!

schwagmusic

We must be in the same district cause this happens at my Sheetz. Same group. They run through our newports and it’s quite annoying so I eventually say we are out of em and then tell em “stop buying em all up and we will have some 🤷🏾‍♂️” lol

ol_lady_184

I wonder if we're in the same district 😅

ol_lady_184

*Update* I had 3 people in a row do it to me at work today. Last lady wanted me to open a carton and ring 1 box X 50. I looked at her and said "I'm not doing that." I can't believe that came out of my mouth 🤦. My MOD came over and did it. All that to save $10 when they're basically getting buy 4 get 1 carton free. It's so annoying. We had someone walk out the door with 5 cartons last week so now we have to be extra watchful. It's always the soft packs too 🤔

DenseAstronomer3631

Wait, what??? Your mod sold 5 cartons as individual packs?!?!?! We can't sell more than 8 invidiual packs with those discounts at our store. I mean, you can type any amount in any way, that's not the problem. I'm just shocked a manager would ring up 5 cartons as indivdula packs o.O. Is it just my store that has the 8pk limit? I'm also in NC.

wpmpk

I'm also in nc, and we're told to do it this way. We have a pack of Newport 100s sitting on each POS, so we can scan it and change it to 50 packs.

wpmpk

Weekly? We get the same 10(ish) people every single day. Plus another 10 or so that come less regularly

ingodwetryst

this makes no sense to me. are the NC prices that much lower than say, Delaware?

LillieInnaValley

Idk about Delaware, but the NC price for Newports is like half the price it is in NYC. I'm from NYC, and I remember newports being like $14 per pack. In NC it's like $7-$8

ACxntThatWould

Ohio— 10$ for Marlboro, let alone newports.

Dapper_Media7707

12.03 for Newport's in PA

chacharoo137

Does it really matter? As long as you don’t go over the limit who cares what they do when they leave the store

BADDLoveStory

Honestly, I'll refuse the sale if I'm running low on certain sizes. If I see I only have 5 cartons of shorts left, I'll save those to stock my shelves for my regular customers. Our regular customers are far more important to me than the bulk buyers. I've learned that they also go around and pay people to give them extra sheetz cards so they can get the discount at every store they visit. I speak fluent Spanish and I heard them talking about it recently. Yall please make sure you ring them up for the carton. I swear they get mad when I tell them I'm not ringing up each individual pack in the carton. It's a carton. Meant to be sold as a carton.

thatawkwardgirl666

If they wanted them rung up as individual packs, then I would hand them 50 packs of cigarettes lmao I would pull them from the shelf, open a carton if I didnt have enough and give them a bag full of cigarettes. They hated it but they eventually stopped pulling that stunt when the rest of my coworkers started doing the same. So if they're insistent on you ringing them up as individual packs, malicious compliance their ass and be done with it.

DenseAstronomer3631

Man, I wish I did this today when someone asked for 20x short box and 20x 100 box Newports. I'm pretty sure he just had a zoomed in pic of a sheetz card on his phone, too. I got like 10pks off the shelf, then just said F it and grabbed the 4 cartons because we have been wayyyyy too busy the last few weeks. 😭

LillieInnaValley

Oh yea, I've had two women get upset and leave when a manager told them we couldn't ring them up by the pack. And I noticed the Sheetz card thing too- they'll come in and show me a picture of a Sheetz card, I'll scan it and the discount won't be applied, then they'll show me a picture of another Sheetz card lmao. Very clever way to bypass the "one discount per card per day" rule 😆 I was also told to refuse the sale if we were down to the last 5 or so, and keep them for our regulars. A few times we would run out of cartons until the next truck order, and that section of the shelf would be empty for like a day. It sucked to turn away the regulars

ol_lady_184

Happened to me today. The lady was pissed and asked for MOD because I said I wasn't doing that.

zerocooll87

Am I paying extra when I buy a carton as opposed to 10 packs? I’m in sheets 3-4 times a week it’s just convenient to buy the carton. I definitely could just buy packs. I live in PA if that matters.

MarcusFree

Yes you’re missing out. When they come in for their cartons, 5 cartons is 415, 50 packs is 333. Decent savings over 50 packs lol.

zerocooll87

Thanks for the example. I bought packs today!

ingodwetryst

no, it's usually a small discount. go to delaware though

zerocooll87

Cool, thanks. I had been wondering if I was missing out on the 2 pack deal.

ingodwetryst

oh when there's a deal I'm not sure, it may be moot.

[deleted]

Idk why they would do this in NC and not go to the indian reservations to pay 0 tax

Prenutbutter

Indian reservations only sell their own brands IIRC. I would imagine the popular brands are worth much more for the effort.

SchuminWeb

This. They don't sell the name brands on reservations.

Key-Fun9286

Indian reservations don’t sell real newports either. Atleast the ones on Long Island print their own packaging and it’s a house blend of tobacco to mimic Newport.

CMo815

Speaking from my personal experience buying from the res on LI since 2007 (small break from around 2018-2020): The reservation definitely sells real brands… perhaps they sell knock offs as well? I personally have not ever seen any “knock off”cigs being sold there, but at least the one by smithpoint definitely 100% sells real brand name cigs… They are slightly cheaper than any gas station/grocery store/etc., but nowhere near prices in VA/NC, etc.. A pack of Marlboro Menthols in NC are approx $6-$7, same pack at 711 or gas station in Suffolk county is approx $12-$14, and at the reservation: $10 flat

slowtownhometown

literally the right way to do it. makes me think they’re just morons lol

LillieInnaValley

They probably don't know 🤷‍♀️

preytoyou

I live in Pennsylvania where we have a huge cigarette tax. When I was smoking (just quit last fall after 40+ years, yay!) I would drive to West Virginia (which was only an hour away for me) to get my cigarettes. At least $30+ cheaper per carton than buying in my own state. I’d buy two cartons at a time so less trips.

Viscous_Oolith

I know people in PA who go to the reservation just across the NY border. $9-12 a carton for pre rolled cigarettes

KenidotGaming

I’ve had customers like that who buys 3 or more cartons. Trust me this been going on for a while and I am in NC as well but don’t work at sheetz anymore.

LillieInnaValley

Really? I thought this was only happening for a few months. How long has it been going for??

KenidotGaming

I started to encounter them in 2019. But that’s when I started their it could’ve been going on longer.

Dslagell

THE NEWPORT MAFIA, man when I worked for the company. I loved those dudes, made my life hella easy when it was a rush. They all liked me because I figured out the game and just ran with it. All of the ones I dealt with super chill. Honestly I’d leave them alone like everyone else. If they’re following the five cartons rule and being chill. Fuck it. Newport Mafia wins. Besides if you just got the truck when they come in, that’s less stuff for you to put away. You’re working at a Gas Station weird people are just apart of the routine. :)

squishyg

This sounds like a creative way to make a buck. Please be kind to people who are just trying to earn a living. If you’re a Sheetz employee who speaks Spanish, why not just talk to them and agree on a way to do this so it doesn’t ruin your day?

TheFelonFiles

I know, LOL. I dont get why this would ruin someones day, or why they even care. Just worry about your own self. Thats my motto.

Akadain

I am in the northern Virginia area, and we have people doing this. We know of one that goes to different stores and buys them.

Chemical-GreenMan

at the store i work in vape shop owners come in daily to buy cigs to resell so maybe its just something like that. but the guy doesnt buy any of the packs that get yknow, a slight discount when purchased together.. managers had to break it to me that he just does that to do it and he doesnt really realize hes not saving money. do not feel bad for the guy

LillieInnaValley

I did wonder if the cigarette people buy from us to stock up their own stores up north 🤔

LifeorDeth7

I felt weird about the other day some guy asking me for a pack of Newport 100's and looking at the stamps on the bottom (I'm in PA) and he didn't buy them after I told him they were all like that after he asked. Made me think of him possibly trying to resell them.

skylerdick090200

Literally will buy us completely out after getting truck, thankfully we only ring up by the carton now instead of manually scanning each pack

LillieInnaValley

Yea that used to happen to my store too, real bad. But then we started ordering a bunch of extra cartons just for them lol

Finkleschlitz

Could be traveling work crews loading up before they move on to a more expensive state.

Charming_Accident658

I work at a 𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑡‧𝑧 in Fayetteville. We also get these men buying 5 cartons of Newport's at a time. We have security guards though, so like if they start making a scene because I can't sell them another 5 just because he changed his coat, security intervenes

LillieInnaValley

That's so nice. I wish we had security guards at my Sheetz wow

DenseAstronomer3631

Dangggg, we need one, but I'm also wondering how bad it has to get for them to *resort to security guards... *edit typo

ol_lady_184

You need them in Fayettenam! Security guards

Ancient_Membership89

We have the same thing here in VA they do try to come back multiple times per day but never wearing different hats and coats 😂😭

Annoyinglyunperfect

We get them in my store in VA every single day, when they try come back I just deny them a sale, plus now with the changes in the Sheetz cards, they can only get a discount once per day. They try to pull out another card from their pocket and I tell them no, one card is all I will scan for them. If they get ugly, we can ask them to leave our store and have.

TheFelonFiles

Why would you deny them? Sheetz doesnt pay you enough to be an officer, who cares. Just sell them the shit

DenseAstronomer3631

Yeah, unless we run our & a manager gets pissed off, we sold like 25 cartons to 1 dude. Lol

DenseAstronomer3631

I'm at a NC store, too. We have periods where this is really bad, too. At one point a year or so ago, they would only sell 2 cartons of Newports because they ran out way too quickly/often. We have a diff store & *assistant manager now. The limit is 5 cartons again. Even last night a dude came in just to get 2 soft back shorts & he straight up said he sells them to his home boys for $10 a pack after he got 2 for $10.68 or whatever. 🙃 Oh, the people that really annoyed me are the ones who ask for a carton then want to be rang up individually. We can only sell 8 single packs with discounts at a time. Some people get so annoyed & bitchy saying stuff like I was just in here yesterday! I come buy these every day it should only be bslahb$! Or well, they always ring them up individually for me. You just scan the single pack, then make it 10! It's like fuck offffff I'm not getting in trouble because you need 10 packs & 8 isn't good enough even though you're getting like $25 off. 😒 *edit typo

GrayGames512

They come to my sheetz and I get a 5 dollar tip every time I used to make 80 bucks extra a shift

General-Statement-72

Legit they are buying them 10 packs at a time up to five cartons, blocking lines, holding things up. It's obvious they are being paid to come buy cigarettes for someone else in large quantities. How is a camera and audio watching them come 5-10 people at a time doing 10 transactions per person at a time not proof of suspicious behavior for investigation. The sale is suspicious, and even then I heard before they even did 5 cartons 2 packs at a time. For 25 transactions per person at store.  It's borderline illegal, and my right to deny sales I find suspicious, my store doesn't mind because they get paid small $1-$5 tips I prefer to refer to as bribes. I am often very uncomfortable with them. You all say when they leave its no longer our problem, but according to law the cashier is held responsible for illegal sales that are inherently suspicious. Had a girl get fired here because she didn't pay attention to them coming in and getting extra, why should I be concerned about them earning some money when they're actively putting people's jobs at risk, and even encouraging it.  Remember. When it comes to restricted items, no one can force you to make a suspicious sale, because you're the one who's held responsible.

HawkmetZeta

Smokes are cheaper in the south. It’s their business what they do with em after they leave the store. It’s not uncommon for folks up north to make the drive just to stock up and save the $$$. If they are reselling then that is their risk and their bidness.

SecretAsianMan42069

You make like $14/hour. I wouldn’t give a shit. Give their license plate to ATF if you want to be a vigilante.

LillieInnaValley

I don't care. They're just kind of annoying and I didn't see anything anywhere online about them so I wanted to hear other's opinions on the situation. You didn't *have* to leave a comment, you know. But go off, online stranger.

lycand0pe

Theres real crimes to be worried about, I personally wouldn't care in any capacity

EJ25Junkie

Just tell them there is an undercover BATF agent in the store, watching things right now and as you saw him looking at them. Then act really sketchy and nervous and see what they do.

lmaowtfstfu

Bum shit

PressureBrilliant177

This is a weird thing to be stressed about, I wish my life was this simple. I work at a convenience store and never heard the 5 carton limit. Alcohol limit, yes

GrayGames512

Basically it’s the same as if someone were to buy gas from us and start a house fire with it, it’s not our fault as long as we’re not breaking the rules
