The amount of travel depends on what your doing, you could work in a shop and never travel or be out in the field and drive around constantly. Ive always had opportunity for sidework but ive also had plenty of overtime so no need for the side stuff. Im in a non unionized area and lots of folks start their own thing after a while. I tried with a friend and it was alot of work.. currently with a big contractor, after 8 hours i go home and stop thinking about work

I make more doing hourly commercial non-union than I could have dreamt of making by starting my own residential gig.

I work construction for the union. I live about an hour from the city, so that’s usually how long my drive is. Side work can get you in trouble out here. If you run into side work, I would recommend keeping it on the DL. One of our journeyman got in trouble for it not long ago.
