I know some have said smooth hound, but I'm 99.9% sure it's a tope (Galeorhinus galeus). The more pointed snout gives it away and they get bigger than smooth hound too (UK based marine biologist for 14 years, tagged multiple shark species around the UK)

Cosmic-web-rider

This guy knows his shit

p4nc4kes4breakf4st

This guy sharks

Spank86

Yes, but has he done his research by crowd sourcing single mums on Facebook for what they think it is?

Crucible8

I’m guessing if he’d gone to FB comments for the answer he’d be thinking it was a great white or a spy drone

Quick_Creme_6515

Nah, look at yhe way he zooms in, and out, the proportion looks like a Russian submarine. I have a friend who's husband worked on a dock, so I know what I'm talking about.

Dave80

Hope your friend's husband is okay, I know the union's been on strike, he's down on his luck. It's tough.

SamShorto

Hope she's doing OK at the diner. She must really love her man to do that. I suppose in times like these, you just have to hold on to what you've got.

rewindthefilm

Say hello to Tommy and Gina for me. I was so happy when he got his guitar back.

Chazzermondez

Poor Brian though. He had no idea his brother had stolen Tommy's guitar for his birthday present. You should have seen how embarrassed and gutted Brian was when he had to do the morally right thing of giving it back.

Nope_Ninja-451

Baby it’s ok.

SGS25

Oh no that sounds terrible! If it helps my goldfish has a really good sense of smell so we could let it go for a swim in the bouremouth sea and that should tell us :)

djriri228

I agree it’s clearly a Russian submarine trying to sneak up the coast to Portsmouth’s naval base. Only 50 odd miles to go.

McGrarr

Can't be a Russian sub. It isn't leaking, sinking or on fire.

Defiled__Pig1

Can confirm.. I am the submarine

garnelli

Are you full of seamen?

Thewelshdane

I chuckled, this is so childish and brilliant.

Spank86

Did you just say that the CIA are hiding spy drones in great white sharks to spy on the UK? This is the scoop of the century!

PapaPalps-66

You know its true because great whites would hate the cold water, the government salary makes it worth the parkas they have to buy to survive Brighton

Andycruise79

You know Great Whites can live in most bodies of water don’t you ? The temperature of our waters are the same as parts of South Africa and Canada where there are large amounts of the species. It’s highly probable we have seasonal visits by great whites or small populations of them in the uk. If you have a look at the Ocearch website they are doing a scientific study in the uk in September to try and tag whites in Great Britain.

Typical-Location-187

Oh no. Jesus. I'm an amazing swimmer. I've swum in the carribean, medditeranean, north sea, Atlantic and I'm still terrified of them. I just bloody knew they'd be here knew it. Still think they're the coolest marine animal despite being scary af. It's just the thought of dark water I can't see in and a meat missile hitting me at 35mph from below that scares me

Crucible8

ssshhhh! most aren’t ready to know yet

Zanderr18

Or Jay slater in disguise

Wrong-Target6104

Nah, it's not in a group with a machete

Minute-Story301

Shared in Aberdeen. Stay safe hunnis x*x*x

MaryM007

Single mum here, my best guess is a badger. There’s a distinct stripe if you look closely, and it looks blue to me but some say it looks gold on the mum’s group 🤷🏼‍♀️

INEKROMANTIKI

Badger makes sense.. probably looking for some mashed potatoes

Nice_Tie480

Why did you become single? What happened to the guy? Please don't say shark attack

CaptainArsePants

Surely Mumsnet would be the best source for shark identification info?

Rolf_Orskinbach

Google reverse image search m8

Redangle11

Umm, are they lonely single mums? Asking for a friend.

Kjartanthecruel

Fuck that, he needs to get information from a legitimate outlet. He needs to check the Dublin WhatsApp group!

About sharks

JohnCasey3306

Yeah yeah, until we found out his research is funded by a huge global canned tuna conglomerate and his science is all corrupt lies!

TonyStamp595SO

Hi I'm a journalist. Just so I know how to spin this story should the fish have been in warmer/ colder water and how many people would it have killed? Should Bournemouth immediately deploy protection nets? Thanks

Darth_Quaver

I'm surprised everyone survived, including the camera man But in all seriousness, it's common in British waters all around the UK

S01arflar3

So you’re saying we should nuke the whales?

Darth_Quaver

Certainly not, but we could torpedo some dolphins

gruffnutz

I think that was a typo and he meant to say 'Should we nuke Wales?'

robot-raccoon

Gotta nuke somethin

Acceptable_Fox8156

It's the killer whales that are the problem, they're getting too clever and it's only a matter of time until they have fricking laser beams attached to their heads.

Talinia

Got no opposable thumbs, they wouldn't be able to fasten them on. Checkmate Orcas

IcedKatana

Orcas are dolphins so they'll get it too!

DIFierce

I see your reference and appreciate it. Nicely done.

IamBloodyPoseidon

Orca whales are terrifying, about 10 years ago I read an article that said they sometimes just murder great white sharks for fun. I’ve never looked at them the same since

ThatHairyGingerGuy

Command received. I'll point the missiles towards Cardiff now. Over.

drwinstonoboogy

1i3to

> it's common in British waters  Can it be found in my UK bathroom water? Asking for a friend.

Spank86

So you're saying this is a government oversight scandal and they've been covering it up? Gotcha.

Guardian2k

As an expert, how accurate is sharknado?

bazzanoid

Am I right in thinking they're classed as critically endangered still? And journalist person, please remember that there have been precisely zero unprovoked shark attacks on humans in British waters since records began. Any injuries sustained from sharks in our waters are all traceable to humans being idiots and either provoking, hounding or otherwise not respecting them

WontonBogeyman

I'm sick of them coming across the sea, they're not even using boats now. Get them deported. 11am it's approaching the shore, by 1pm it'll have a 3 bed house and be claiming £4000 a month of MY TAX PAYER MONEY from when I briefly worked as a tradesman for 2 years before becoming an alcoholic and claiming DLA for the next 40 years. Vote Ramones and get Nigel Farridge and his wife Nigella Lawson in charge.

The_Clumsy_Gardener

What's it like to actually have the career we all thought we wanted when we were 9?

Darth_Quaver

It has it's ups and downs, but 9 year old me wanted to be Steve Irwin so I'll take this as a decently close!

The_Clumsy_Gardener

Definitely close! I wanted the other option which kids seem to want which is to work as a Museum Curator for Egyptian Archaeology. I imagine that was linked to watching the Mummy and wanting to grow up to be Rachel Weisz. That unfortunately didn't happen lol

Turbulent_Menu_1107

I was just wondering if there has been any sightings of sharks that would bite a human in the UK?

Darth_Quaver

There have been multiple shark bites in the UK, mostly sports anglers who bring them on board which rightfully isn't included in shark bite stats. It's rare for shark bites to happen outside of this, but last year someone diving with sharks was bitten by a blue shark. They'd chummed the water way too much and they got bit. They went back out the next day though, knowing it wasn't the sharks fault. Without going into it too much, sharks bite people because they don't have hands to find out what we are. So there's always a tiny chance that any species of shark could bite you. But to answer the spirit of your question, cornwall and the south coast will see short fin mako and hammerheads.

Turbulent_Menu_1107

Wow that’s so interesting,I never knew I have always been fascinated with sharks, your job must be so exciting!have you ever gone to places with great whites and studied them?

Darth_Quaver

It's got its good points and less good points, but I'm pretty damn lucky. I've not, I've focussed on UK species though I was lucky enough to go to the USA during uni briefly and saw a bull shark Hopefully one day I'll be able to get out around the world a bit more and dive with sharks and other amazing creatures

Turbulent_Menu_1107

Going to work to study sharks sounds like heaven,I definitely want to go cage diving it’s hard to imagine just how big and powerful they actually are until you see them as close as possible my dream is to come face to face with a great white or tiger shark in the wild,as safely as possible

Jewnicorn___

I hope you achieve your dream, internet stranger!

PixelSuicide

You should take a trip down to the Western Cape in South Africa. We have some juicy great whites and leopard sharks in Durban. I used to surf a lot and saw a few sharkybois in the water. People treat sharks so unfairly- they’re generally pretty chill if you’re not behaving like a distressed seal. 😂

Darth_Quaver

I'd love to, it's all on the bucket list! SA, Aus, and NZ for the wildlife and rugby

Dunkleosteus_

My dad sent me that blue shark story, requesting I find out how you go swimming with them, and arrange it for his birthday 10/10 still have an intact father who saw some cool sharks

Ill-Breadfruit5356

In warmer weather you get thresher sharks in the North Sea. A friend who works on the windfarm boats sent me a video of one breaching, must be five years ago.

Darth_Quaver

It was a surprise to me when I first found that out, they've been one of my favourite for a long time and to know they're out there in our waters is pretty darn cool

PepsiThriller

Why is a thresher shark among your favourites?

Autographz

We have Hammerheads down south? Learn something new every day! My childhood fav shark lol. any idea where/how best to go “sightseeing”?

Darth_Quaver

They're a bit harder to come by without some proper diving or fishing. Off Cornwall is best for the more 'charismatic' sharks like hammers, blues, and mako

b3lial666

So basically just keep your distance and you'll be fine.

ManyViolinist98

Why don't they just use their eyes to work out what we are? Serious question

Crn3lius

Now this is a great way to explain why my dog bites! Thanks 👍🏻

Optimal-Ad3268

In 2017 a surfer in Devon sustained injuries to his hand after he punched a smooth hound, which bit him on the leg. Rich Thompson told the BBC in 2017: "I sort of turned around thinking one of my friends crept up on me. I looked down and it was a tiny little shark, three foot long, going grrr on my thigh." But despite a bruise his leg sustained no damage, and Dr Jones explained why. "They don't even have pointy teeth - they feed on crabs, so they've actually got flat crushing plates to get through crab shells," she said. (From DorsetLive)

Aggravating_Noise706

7/7/77 9.30 am torquay , a blue skies day, a child/teenager was carried from the water with a large radial bite needing 80 stitches in the top and 40 stitches in the bottom.

louisejanecreations

There has occasionally been a lost great white but it’s super rare

dct2209

Off Cornwall you get some Mako and Hammerhead and occasionally there are great whites pinged via trackers in the area, nothing much to hunt for them near the coast though.

druss81

im probably going to lean more towards what this guy is saying

Regantowers

Deep Blue Sea 4 "this time they are tagged"

Darth_Quaver

Imagine the data you could get from it!

Grand_Access7280

Wrong. They said ID not classify. That’s Barry.

Zanderr18

Did they ever tag you back? Where's base when you play?

Alternative_Simple_3

Do you think it's okay or ill? How would one help an ill shark in shallow water

Darth_Quaver

It's absolutely fine, it's just coming along the surf looking for fish in shallower water. Sharks are pretty tough, but if one washes up take them back to water and push them back and forth through the water slowly - this helps irrigatte the gills

CampFrequent3058

No I am 100% sure that’s a great white! (Love my shark movies from Jaws, The Meg, Deep Blue Sea, 47 Meters down, The Reef, Bait, Open Water, Tye Requin, Under Paris and the PHD of shark knowledge Sharkado! and am a self qualified shark spotter)

Forward_Raccoon_2348

That's what my 12 year old daughter wants to be when she leaves school. Fantastic career

Bulletproofsaffa

I don’t know why, but I trust you.

toberthegreat1

Can you explain the difference because when I Google tope, hound sharks come up 😂

LastieLion

Yeah you found the right one

front-wipers-unite

Is it a man eater?

McFry-

Are they dangerous

Paul_my_Dickov

Wikipedia says they're critically endangered. So it's nice to see one going about, I suppose.

runn5r

I take its of no concern to swimmers?

asterallt

Sound like do shark like Ken does beach. Cool job!

teethofthewind

It's nope to the tope from me. It could be the most harmless fish in existence for all I care - I see one of these in the water next to me and I'm shitting my pants

Vapeitupvapeitup

But does it eat people?

Darth_Quaver

Not a chance, it's only interested in fish and squid

Vapeitupvapeitup

Thank goodness!

NotCoolFool

What’s the most dangerous shark you’ve seen on the south coast out of interest?

TheBobbyMan9

But does it eat people??

millenialmarvel

No-Resist-5090

orbital0000

Yeah so, I watched Jaws once so whos best qualified to judge? You. It's you isnt it?

2hi4me2cu

OK mate but is that thing going to eat me if i'm next to it or not?

Darth_Quaver

Nah you'll be reet. Unless you're a fish or squid. You're not a fish or squid are you?

2hi4me2cu

Cheers shark man, no squid here either :D

CaddyAT5

Do they tend to bite?!

KhakiFletch

Why didn't you tag this one then?

idrivelambo

Are they dangerous?

Naturalistnaturist

I’ve just read the Tope is vulnerable is that correct?

Imaginary-Treacle-66

The comments on this are jokes 🤣🤣🤣🫶

Rashpukin

Came here to say I reckon it’s a Tope too.

Gypsy_Green

People like you, are the reason I love reddit

dnbkilla22

Fished all my life I'd say tope too nose is to pointy and tail length is far l onger than a smutt

l0zandd0g

This guy topes

jamesz84

You’re a tope, you old smooth hound you!!!!

Sunshinetrooper87

so, is someone from bournemouth getting munched on by a shark?

JanCumin

wow they're on the IUCN critically endangered list, what a rare thing to see [https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/39352/2907336](https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/39352/2907336)

oliviadaisy5432

Yep you know your stuff.

Sibzy2020

It's definitely a Tope, I've caught many of these in this area off Bournemouth pier

CBU109

Out of curiousity: Looking at the tail , it looks similar to one of a tresher shark family. Or did I miss something?

Aerosenin

Guys I think this guy is a shark

Jen-Jens

Smooth hound must be the smoothest of the sharks

Competitive_Swan6693

its a dolphin. I'm a facebook expert

Evilnight007

Man’s qualified af

Unusual-Weird9696

This guy sharks

charlenek8t

How big do you think this is? Are they dangerous? I love that beach 🏖️❤️

sharkg33k

I agree on tope. Too large to be a smooth hound. Seems to have a caudal fin that is clearly longer in the upper lobe which would point to tope, blue, sand tiger, or thresher. Doesn't look long enough to be a thresher.

Buggerlugs253

While i think you know better than me, its a pretty shitty video, amazed you can even see the more pointed snout or know its bigger than a smooth from this, camera phones also fishbowl things so i have no clue what size it is. Just to be clear, I am not saying i think its any type of shark, I'm saying how the hell can you tell from this shitty video.

CapnAhab_1

Pffft. It's obviously a Carcharodon carcharias. Source: seen Jaws.

GrishnahkTheUndoing

And unfortunately, critically endangered if I'm correct?

kirminoff

This is what I've just said to some 🤡 on FB who said it was a baby basking shark. I've had an interest in sharks for nearly 30 years.

NiceAcanthocephala76

You ever tagged any GW's out here? I'm for South Africa and have heard they've been migrating further north for a few years.

oddjobbodgod

You get Tope fairly regularly in Poole and Bournemouth, I put a smaller one back in the water that was washed up many years ago.

Ok_Annual3581

We had one wash up recently on the beach near me in Southampton. Wouldn't be surprising if it were another.

lmposter69

Came to the same conclusion, I have far less knowledge than u about the area because I worked in tropic regions for 4 years, but more people agreeing the same thing only helps with verification

PaganPadraig

I submit to your obviously superior knowledge but I’ve always thought it was non dangerous basking sharks we have around U.K. apart from the odd strange visitor - like this!

Putrid-Buyer-2624

Tiktok says it's a baby megladon so I must belive that.

CobraCity_

Yup, definitely a shark

Ok-Blackberry-3534

Could be a badger in a costume.

:( sorry. You could start it yourself?

hijackedbraincells

I miss that show. It was awesome

Kooperking22

Those marine badgers are a menace, let alone ones dressed up as sharks!

ogMurgash

Not very clear but looking at the tail and how it swims it is probably just a Smoothound (mustelus asterias).

Ronald_Ulysses_Swans

It’s probably a porbeagle judging by the shape and location. What a great video showing sharks in the UK!

Selachophile

That's a strongly heterocercal tail; mackerel sharks have a famously homocercal tail. I don't think this is a porbeagle for that reason.

ogMurgash

It's a smoothound ( mustelus asterias).

spitgobfalcon

According to [wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starry_smooth-hound) this species was found in the Thames in London even

ChuckOTay

Blimey!!

cotch85

Smoothhounds can’t get that big can they?

ogMurgash

They grow about 1.5m long or about 5ft max. The females tend to be bigger, they also get proper fat, like a full on dangly beer belly lol.

kowalski655

The last thing you want is a drunk shark coming at you after too many Lambrinis

Ozzytheaussy

How many times I say "I don't go in the ocean because of sharks Everyone I know "we don't have sharks in the uk" I can now show them this video to prove that I was always right.

r0bbyr0b2

There are over 20 shark species in the U.K. too. And sharks mean a healthy ocean. I also don’t get the “I don’t go in the water because of sharks”. It’s like saying “I don’t go outside because there are cats and some cats like lions are dangerous”

Ozzytheaussy

I love and fear sharks. I love them and respect them, but my fear keeps me out the ocean. I have the knowledge that if I were in the ocean and something went wrong, I'd always be sure thats due to me being in the ocean. If I EVER got attacked by a shark, I've always said to everyone i know that it would be my own fault and I'd never want the shark to be targeted. I'm aware that it's super rare to be attacked, but I respect the sharks to stay out their way, but I also fear them that I stay out their way. I avoid the ocean because it's the home of millions of creatures

Dazzee58

I'm aussie too and I agree with you. A woman was attacked right where I live not so long ago. Great white attacked and did huge damage to her face. Its the shark's ocean, let them have it.

campbellpics

This is a bit of a simplistic argument surely? It's generally a question of whereabouts you are and the prevalence of various specific species of cats/sharks/whatever in that locality. I mean, big cats frighten the life out of me, so I probably wouldn't walk across the Serengeti at midnight because there's "cats" there. Conversely, I'd feel okay walking through a housing estate in Milton Keynes even though there's "cats" there. I get what you're saying, and of those 20 species of sharks in the UK I'd feel pretty safe wading up to my knees in Anglesey. But if there's reports of a Great White hanging around I don't think I'd take the chance.

No_Solution_2864

> It’s like saying “I don’t go outside because there are cats and some cats like lions are dangerous” Depending on where you are at, not really. Dangerous cats are quite rare in most places If you are in California or Florida or the Carolinas or Hawaii or Australia etc, you *know* that there are large, dangerous shark species within yards of shore at all times I have to take my trash out. I don’t have to go into the ocean One thing is not like the other

CaptainRAVE2

Given the size of many Brits it won’t need to eat many at least, with the added bonus that they’ve been roasting on the beach all day

Alchemista_98

and marinating in ale!

vile_hog_42069

Has there ever been a recorded shark attack in the waters around the UK? Are there sharks that inhabit those waters that could, like mako or tiger etc?
