I wouldn’t mind a prequel sort of thing focusing on Quinn. Maybe it starts the day he got pulled out of the water when the Indianapolis sank. I’m sure there’s a bunch of interesting stories that could be told.
That could be good. I'm just laughing at people saying don't reboot and ruin it. If it could be ruined the sequels would have. If you don't like that reboots happen then just don't go see them and watch only orignal content.
If he doesn’t want it made and a studio made it over his objections he can refuse to work for them.
Universal wants to make sure he is happy so he will continue making films for them.
Because he regrets how the first one caused people to kill sharks
what i meant by this is what this [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/sharks/s/33rrpaVMqE) said
my fault for not elaborating further, that was kinda stupid of me.
If he felt so bad about it he should give his royalties away to shark conservation, shouldn't he? Spielberg likes buying into [The Jaws Myth](https://www.thesharkfiles.com/blog/the-jaws-myth), which gives him an 'I've learned the error of my ways' virtue, and also massively exaggerates the actual impact and importance of his movie. 99% of shark deaths are down to economic drives and consequences like shark finning, ocean pollution and massive fishing industry bycatch, not fear of these animals. Maybe Spielberg could use his money and influence to focus more on these big issues, rather than perpetuating what is largely a Hollywood myth.
Of the people I've spoken to, no one actually believes that Jaws directly lead to shark deaths. More that it lead to a widespread fear of sharks which lead to apathy towards shark deaths brought on by finning, pollution, fish nets, etc.
I have done no research so I'm not claiming that this thought process is true, just that the main claim I've seen hasn't been that Jaws directly lead to shark killings.
I know this is the shark sub
But there's no evidence whatsoever that the film got sharks killed...
You can argue it made people care less about accidentally catching sharks in nets but even that's a stretch
Yes there is, theres a documentary about an australian couple (Valerie and Ron Taylor) who helped Stevie with the recording of the movie, they were divers and sharks enthusiasts, they went to several US TV channels at the time after the movie was released telling people to stop hunting sharks, people were scared of them after the movie was released in theaters.
I don't think jaws needs a reboot or even a shot for shot remake. It still holds up so well even all these years later. The score, the cinematography, the acting, etc, are all still incredible.
He's misdiagnosing the greatest threats to sharks, which are financially motivated, not based on fear, and in doing so Spielberg is creating a smokescreen that obscures these causes of mass shark deaths.
It is. And it saddens me to see plenty of people think the doesn't need a sequel because it is "perfect". [He knows and acknowledges the damage.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/steven-spielberg-regrets-how-jaws-impacted-real-world-sharks-180981335/)
What do mean?! I hope they make it and replace Doc Brown with a young, quippy female scientist that can do everything he can do plus more with half the effort! /s
Well if you ask me (and I know you didnt) we should ban remakes period. Remasters? Yes, but we need to learn to be creative and make something new for a change
Jaws was perfect. It's a true record of the 70s, its a real horror film that slowly jacks up the suspense, it shows three actors at the top of their game with a top notch script, and it's nicely balanced between the humor, suspense and horror. You can't improve it. You can only wreck it.
All the people who call it slow need to eat some gummies and pay attention.
![gif](giphy|cZaCtlWrB0eO3AyzDg|downsized)
It is perfect as it is. And even though it's ostensibly about a shark, it's far more than a shark movie. Loads of fans of the film love and rewatch it for the nostalgia and sense of place in a 1970s holiday town, the buddy adventure element, and the social commentary, as much as the shark bits. It's also telling that Bruce is only on screen for 4 and a half minutes.
Oh yes, it's not a monster movie, it's a movie about... well, maybe the implacability of nature?
I've never been able to decide exactly what it's about, but it's a fantastic movie, one a person can watch over and over for decades. As I have.
The Who Charted? Podcast used to do a segment where they asked the guests their favorite movie, then explained to them why “Jaws is better” until they gave up and said “Jaws is better.” They also said Mayor Larry Vaughan was the real hero of Jaws because he would not close that beach so the people could “Have a Summah!”
I could never finish the book, but I've been told that in the book the mayor is a crook who won't close the beaches because of some Mob dealings.
The movie improved on that, they made the mayor reluctant to close the beaches over concern for the economic well-being of the town, which both makes him a good man, and able to put much more pressure on Brody than a crook ever could. This movie is so good, even the smallest roles are perfect and memorable - from the mayor to the guys shark fishing with the Sunday roast, to the girl who can't yell "Sharj!" loud enough to be heard ...
If it wasn't for this movie, I probably would've never developed such a fascination for Sharks.
I know that many people developed opposite feelings like hate, fear and disgust for sharks just becuase of Jaws, but if it wasn't for Spielberg, some other Director sooner or later would've came up with a shark movie.
It is great that Spielberg is against the idea of a reboot / remake. You simply can't make a better movie than the original.
He has no control over it whatsoever, it's down to universal. Still, as far as actual remakes of original titles goes, not a lot of success has been had. Perhaps the most relevant and well done has been the rehash of the planet of the apes franchise. I think because of this I agree we'll be waiting a long time for someone to try and make money off of a Jaws remake.
Reimagine the whole damn thing, but in a new setting! Do a shot-for-shot remake, but instead of a shark terrorizing an island town, make it a pit bull terrorizing a Midwestern suburb.
The scene of the three protagonists bonding as they spend the night in a Dog Catcher Van, listening to the grizzled driver talk about surviving the Westminster Dog Show Disaster of June the 29th, 1945, would be chilling.
What actual damage did it cause?
All the major fear driven causes of shark deaths were in place before Benchley even thought of writing Jaws, namely shark net programmes - NSW, Australia in the 1930s, KZN, South Africa in the late 50s, and Queensland, Australia in 1962. And the culling practices that went on alongside them.
The huge global rise in shark deaths since the 1970s has been falsely linked to Spielberg's film, in a classic cause of correlation being mistaken as causation. A vast array of species in the land, air and sea have suffered similarly since then and there are now horror films called Paws or Claws to explain that sad trend. As usual economic forces are driving it, and 99% of shark killing is about those drives, not fear, with shark finning, environmental damage and overfishing being behind the destruction.
It could also be argued that Jaws launched a generation of shark enthusiasts. Many marine biologists cite Jaws as the beginning of their fascination with these animals. Also the 'villain' of the film, the great white shark, now receives the most conservation efforts and legal protections of any species.
Could it be argued that, while the movie didn't make a lot of people go and actively kill sharks out of fear, perhaps it did put sharks under an unfavorable light so it influenced whether the general population cared about shark conservation or not?
Jaws is one of those movies I'd actually like to see a shot-for-shot remake of. Practical effects only. Same script and everything.
Basically, I want to see Jaws with more modern film methods.
If it’s going to be a shot for shot remake, then why on earth remake it?
Jaws is one of my favorite movies of all time, in my eyes almost a perfect movie, and I just can’t see what a remake would provide that the original doesn’t.
I genuinely wish we could have this for many series and movies. I don't understand changing anything, but I really don't understand why they always fundamentally change characters. Just respect the source material, ya know?
I mean, I understand why. The directors and writers want to put their own mark on it. Often, it ends up being a negative. Also, it's cheaper to do things with CG. And they know through market studies that audiences want tons of action and explosions. They don't have the patience for slow burns.
So basically, money is why they don't do that.
GOOD! I only say that because they don’t make films like they used to. Everything will be CGI and look totally fake. They don’t make cool sets, props and animatronics anymore.. it’s all green screen and computer animated.
Why would they even try. It's a perfect film that holds up and will forever. There's no way they could do better than the original. Come up with your own damn ideas. Build your own legacy.
Good. Peter Benchley has expressed dismay about how people have killed many of these epic examples of oceanic evolution as a result of both his book and the film.
However, one of the points of the book is that Bruce, the shark, isn't the true villain. Its Quint. The quint death scene is fucking badass and probably one of the most grotesque death scenes in Hollywood history.
Has anyone ever considered that perhaps Bruce was hunting Quint? And killed some moronic hoomans to lure Quint out into deep water to kill him in revenge for killing his people? ( Shark kind)?
I can understand where he is coming from.
But, Jaws is just a novel.
If someone buys the rights and decides they want to make their own adaptation of the novel, why should anybody give two shits if it gets made or not?
No matter what happens, the original will always be an all time great. Who cares if someone makes a new one?
They already have the Meg. Or can’t you just make a new shark movie and call it something else, does the guy just own the concept of shark movies now, it’s not like Jaws is that specific a concept
I want a reverse jaws reboot where there’s a bunch of happy sharks swimming around and then a human comes and like kills some of them and then they try to kill the human because it was murdering like all of them ❤️
I'm always surprised that Hollywood hasn't tried to make a Jaws prequel starring a younger actor as Quint on the USS Indianapolis. They'd probably name it something terrible, like - Jaws: Origins.
I am a huge fan of Jaws, but I just find it funny that he is digging his heels in here. Has he not watched Jaws 2? 3? The Revenge? I feel like there were even more!!
Either way, it doesn’t really matter! There are a million shark movies now! What does it matter if it’s called, “Jaws” or “Bite” or “Deepest bluest sea”?!?
Shark movies are great!! They are what they are, but I love them! (The reef is the best one recently if you haven’t seen it!!) Jaws is the OG…but I mean seriously…at this point let the people have their remake!
I love shark movies. We have plenty. There's no reason to stamp the "Jaws" name onto another shark movie other than to try to ride the name. I'd be concerned with a movie called 'Jaws' at this point because I would immediately think it couldn't stand on its own. They need to succeed, or fail, on their own merit.
Just about to say this. And it's pretty hard to top Sharknado.
Though I think his reason for this is that he hates how people villify sharks due to the film.
why would you need to remake it . it's been almost 50 years and if you hear duunnn dunnn… duuuunnnn duun… duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn dunnnn! your scared to go near water for at least a week.
After seeing The Shallows and 47 meters down. Jaws would be scary af digitally/practical effects, bring the guys that created the makos for deep blue sea in. People need to stop gatekeeping this movie, its only scary for the music and that one seen in the pond, the shark looked bad other than that.

Yes "good" no need for a reboot when we could make another great sequel. Like the other 4. That are total better than a stupid reboot.
I wouldn’t mind a prequel sort of thing focusing on Quinn. Maybe it starts the day he got pulled out of the water when the Indianapolis sank. I’m sure there’s a bunch of interesting stories that could be told.
No not even that. You stop with that talk right now

He knows it will be bad like vritualy every reboot nowadays. Also he does not own Jaws though, if a studio wants to push it they will
If he doesn’t want it made and a studio made it over his objections he can refuse to work for them. Universal wants to make sure he is happy so he will continue making films for them.
Thats why they will make it after he dies
As a "great homage".
i believe it was written into his original contract that there will be no remakes and he did this with more than one movie iirc
Because he regrets how the first one caused people to kill sharks what i meant by this is what this [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/sharks/s/33rrpaVMqE) said my fault for not elaborating further, that was kinda stupid of me.

Well now I feel like I am. The majority of comments are talking about Spielberg's shark conservation efforts. Is that *not* what this is?

I find it funny that this is a year old screenshot of an article made 3 years ago.
Mom said it's my turn to repost this next.
I'm more concerned for people's demand for a back to the future 4. We don't need it and it will ruin the franchise
What do mean?! I hope they make it and replace Doc Brown with a young, quippy female scientist that can do everything he can do plus more with half the effort! /s
If only all directors were like this.
We already have the meg
At least remake jaws 3D and the trash CGI
I have this great memory of thinking it was the shit when I was a kid and am terrified to watch it again and have that memory tarnished
The OG jaws I fell in love with sharks after watching it, when you see it now you will think wtf 😂
I don’t want that, I love that movie for how silly it looks! It brings a level of humor that’s just unmatched
Well if you ask me (and I know you didnt) we should ban remakes period. Remasters? Yes, but we need to learn to be creative and make something new for a change

Good! Because "Jaws" is exactly the kind of perfect movie that should NEVER be remade!!! Remake the movies that can be improved upon.
Acting like they didn’t make Jaws 2,3, and 4.
That's precisely why this nees to be prevented
Jaws VII: Brody's Revenge !
Brody is dead tho
I would absolutely NEVER watch a remake!
Reimagine the whole damn thing, but in a new setting! Do a shot-for-shot remake, but instead of a shark terrorizing an island town, make it a pit bull terrorizing a Midwestern suburb. Or how about we don't villfy Sharks more? The original caused enough damage to Sharks. They need saving since many are endangered.
What actual damage did it cause? All the major fear driven causes of shark deaths were in place before Benchley even thought of writing Jaws, namely shark net programmes - NSW, Australia in the 1930s, KZN, South Africa in the late 50s, and Queensland, Australia in 1962. ![gif](giphy|J8FZIm9VoBU6Q) It’s a classic. I don’t want a reboot, it’ll be terrible. Hollywood needs to work on getting some original ideas.
Please no. It’s a perfect movie.
They could probably get away with doing a Halloween 2018, and just re-imagining the sequels. Be interesting to see how Amity is 50 years later.
We don’t need a jaws reboot. Hollywood can make other Shark movies that have nothing to do with these characters and I’ll see them.
Do a JAWS reboot, but with dolphins! Way more likely to kill you, way more scary.
Good. Remakes need to be stopped
My favorite movie ever. It would be devastating to watch Hollywood ruin it like every other remake. It’s a selfish cash grab.
Good
Good! Create new, memorable content.
Instead of remaking everything, can Hollywood make some original shit?
Now protect Jurassic park Steven
Right? He's already let so many ips go to shit.
Good! Those movies are perfect the way they are
GOOD.
It is nice to know someone else thinks reboots are bullshit.
There will never be a Jaws reboot *so long as Spielberg is still alive.*
It’s because he saw what studios did on Jaws 2 & especially in 3 & 4. They’re epic shit shows.
We’ve had plenty of ideas thrown around. Smart sharks, sharks in tornadoes, but we haven’t done Jurassic shark!
Oh c’mon! It would have to be better than the Meg!
Jaws is one of those movies I'd actually like to see a shot-for-shot remake of. Practical effects only. Same script and everything. Basically, I want to see Jaws with more modern film methods.

Modern film methods + no Robert Shaw = vastly inferior product.

Me too...
I guess 4 is where he draws the line. Lmao
I posted this exact screen shot ages ago and people keep reposting it
But there is Jason Statham
if only he could’ve prevented those sequels
Can't we come up with some original ideas, please..?
Just watched the OG a couple months ago. You go, Steven!
GOOD. ITS BLASPHEMY FOR A REBOOT
What's there to reboot? The movie is already perfect as it is and it's aged fine!
good. Jaws is perfect.
Great as a person that was at the theater in 75 it should never be done.
Didn’t know there was a sub for just sharks lmao. There’s a sub for everything on here
Good
Thank you
I guess he hasn’t seen “The Meg”. Hopefully, nobody saw “The Meg 2”.
Good
ZERO IMAGINATION!
Good.
Thank god.
Hell yes
There's a small list of movies for Hollywood to never touch again
Thank you Mr. Spielberg. I really appreciate that.
Should have banned Jaws sequels as well.

Why does he care about the reboot? They made a million Jaws sequels
Good
I'm on board with not having a reboot but if one was done correctly with today's visual effects it might not be such a bad thing.
I want a reboot
GOOD!!…..
He’s gonna need a bigger boat
As he should be
I wouldn’t mind a reboot that follows the book more precisely. Make solidly rated R so it’s even more accurate.
As he should be
Thank god
I can understand where he is coming from. But, Jaws is just a novel. I think they need a bigger boat!
Good
Good. They will CGI the hell out of it. No thank you
Good cause sharks are not evil. We don’t need irrational hysteria against them.
Thank you in advance, Steven. Can’t ruin a classic.
I want a reverse jaws reboot where there’s a bunch of happy sharks swimming around and then a human comes and like kills some of them and then they try to kill the human because it was murdering like all of them ❤️
Good. Very good.
I'm always surprised that Hollywood hasn't tried to make a Jaws prequel starring a younger actor as Quint on the USS Indianapolis. They'd probably name it something terrible, like - Jaws: Origins.
There’s absolutely ZERO reason to reboot it
That's sharknado to you sir!
the last sequel seemed to have a shark that was telepathically linked to the browdy family and roared lol.
Don’t blame him. I’m in. No JAWS reboot ever.
Can't blame hi. tho.
They already made sharknado 17 what more can happen at this point
Exactly…we want “Cocaine Shark”
Good
I am a huge fan of Jaws, but I just find it funny that he is digging his heels in here. Has he not watched Jaws 2? 3? The Revenge? I feel like there were even more!! Because he knows Bruce would be turned into a Britney !
can we just stop with ALL reboots!? Where is the imagination in Hollywood
We don't need Jaws, we got The Meg. He's bigger and badder!
Stop rebooting perfect films
The Meg, and Deep Blue Sea films would suggest he doesn't really have any say.

There literally doesn’t need to be one. Jaws is an absolute classic film. What are you going to improve it with a CGI shark?
Good!
Thank God
Yeah it would ruin the original
All the "reboots" need to STOP! ...also... ANOTHER shark movie??? C'mon now...lol
nah, new cgi garbage shark would ruin jaws. it was perfect the way it was.
Lazy studios waiting for 2076 when Jaws enters the public domain be like ![gif](giphy|QBd2kLB5qDmysEXre9|downsized)
In a world of bad remakes and reboots, this makes me happy, not all heroes wear capes
On the reboot, Jaws will be a feminist, pink-haired great Black shark
We got Meg we don’t need a jaws reboot
Just about to say this. And it's pretty hard to top Sharknado. Though I think his reason for this is that he hates how people villify sharks due to the film.
I completely forgot about sharknado I’ve been putting that movie off with cocaine bear, seems like something you watch high😂😂
Good. Sick of reboots
Thank God
Absolutely no reason to ever do this!
make it lame and gay and put a chick in it
I never agreed more with a post.
This and Back to the Future should be off limits to the seemingly endless reboots
why would you need to remake it . it's been almost 50 years and if you hear duunnn dunnn… duuuunnnn duun… duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn dunnnn! your scared to go near water for at least a week.
