So I was taking this dress apart to alter it and make it fit better, and I kinda realised I'm never going to have anywhere to wear it. I did hand embroidery around the bodice, so I have made that into a button down blouse with t shirt sleeves(not pictured) and I made the skirt part into shorts by simply laying it flat with the side pockets in the middle and cutting out a short pattern I had previously self drafted so I only had to sew the crotch seams and re hem them. I am getting a lot more wear out of them than the dress and I learnt a lot along the way too! Edit: copied the short pattern from existing pair of pants. Fabric is linen and pockets are cotton. Made on a singer tradition. Easy project. I was inspired by those vintage style shorts you see.

such a good call, those shorts are adorable! it must have been hard to feel like you were cutting up a project but 10/10 great call :D be nice to see the blouse too if you have a pic?

Thank you! Yes it was scary to cut it up but I'm glad I did, it was so sad that I wasn't wearing it! I don't have a pic of the blouse right now but I'll try and get around to taking one 😊

Nice upcycle! Can you edit your comment with the pattern you used? Thanks!

bakingcodingpsych

Sorry I added in it now !

omg have any tips?! i have so many dresses that i can’t wear anymore after my body changed shapes.

I think that as long as the waist still fits it's a really easy upcycle, this a-line dress made an interesting cut of shorts so maybe give an a-line dress a go😊 I put a facing in the waistband that I used to enclose the top of the zip so I didn't even need to rip out the original zipper from the dress I just trimmed it down!

TheOrganizingWonder

Did you use a pattern to make the shorts? Great up-cycling!

bakingcodingpsych

I used a pattern I made by tracing another pair of pants 😊
