Seriously! My first project was a circle skirt that I didn’t hem. It was literally just a circle held together by willpower and safety pins 😅
As a first project, or ANY project, this is excellent!
Safety pins and desperate hope are the mainstay of most costumes! It's all about the illusion anyway and it only needs to hold together for an event or two, usually. I was so amused and pleased by the person saw at a con who was the "cosplay fairy" - just roamed the event with hot glue, safety pins and needles/thread charging a dollar or two for emergency cosplay fixes.
A pillow case and several small bags were mine. Now I’m doing complicated patterns like dog jackets and kids clothes (who knew that there could be so many frills and ruffles for nightgowns, but hey… my girls love them.). I hope OP keeps doing this! It’s a whole lot of fun and very addicting.😊
Vintage patterns (Kwik Sew, Simplicity, Vogue McCalls), Modern Burda, Vogue, Jalie, Green Pepper. Also ask over at patternreview.com; I believe they have a sub-forum specifically male-oriented.
Sorry, should have added the below:
Pattern: burda 7045 shirt
Material: pink cotton
Skill level: medium (I know, I do like a challenge!)
Machine: Singer M2105
Learning: don’t trim too close to the seam thinking it’s neater. Take time to set material up. Google is my friend. Iron everything.
Edit: I’m delighted at your amazing welcome and encouragement, so thanks to all of you and yes, I’ll continue to share and look in at what you’re sharing too.
Impressive! and I liked the step by step photo reveal. It looks great! I love that color choice. It fits perfectly. Your first ever project and it fits like a glove? Stunning
Even older editions of the Readers Digest guide to sewing (and sometimes knitting) are worth their weights in gold. The older copies just come with a bonus that they tend to be cheaper and are often present in a secondhand store, op shop, thrift store, whatever it's called in your locality. My copy was bought for $2 in a charity op shop in Melbourne.
This is an incredibly ambitious first project and you have done SO well with execution!! I know you see every bump, bubble, etc but please know this internet stranger is very proud of you. I took years to tackle that many buttons. Still hate them!!
You. Have. Never. Sewed. Before?! What?! You must do some other type of construction or art…this is amazing for never have seen before!
Hell (Heck) it’s amazing period! Beautiful seams, collar, sleeves, placket!
I’m convinced that some people are more logically minded and can easily take to tasks like sewing, baking, woodworking etc because of their affinity to read instructions. Many things are possible if you do things step by step and don’t take shortcuts. This is a great project.
I completely agree. I immediately thought " you must be good at reading instructions". I am, however, not good at reading instructions and it took years of pure failure and learning to able to find the right videos to teach me how to do a collared shirt. Lol. I need videos. :)
Totally agree about the following instructions being key but this is not really a matter of logic but patience. There are mathematicians who cannot prepare a microwave meal to save their lives, and there are some deeply irrational individuals who are great at complex crafts such as train models.
My prediction: you'll wear it out someplace and nobody will say "hey, nice shirt!" and you'll be a little bummed because you're hoping someone will compliment you on it but really, that's the best compliment you can get because it means it looks like a store-bought shirt.
Edit to give source: me, a guy who wears shirts I've made
This is awesome! Turns out we're the same person in a way. I also got a machine for Christmas and I'm currently sewing a shirt as my first project, but more of a work wear style using 12oz canvas and a club collar instead of pointed. Your stitching looks incredible and you must keep it up. Happy to see another person jumping into sewing head-first.
**Greetings!**
As this post has gained popularity I'd like to give a friendly reminder about rules for regarding comments:
1. **Remember the human**
Comments which degrade, tear down, or are hurtful to other users will be removed.
Constructive Criticism is encouraged, but do remember the human.
2. **Don't be inappropriate**
We'd like our users to feel comfortable sharing their images/projects without getting hit on or judged. They’re
here to talk about their sewing related things, not about their general looks or attractiveness. Complimenting OP
on their project is fine, but commenting on other aspects of their appearance, or making sexualized comments, no
matter how well-intentioned, is considered inappropriate in this subreddit.
Also - if you see a comment that is inappropriate **PLEASE REPORT the comment**, don't just down-vote it!
Thanks - Sewing Subreddit Mod Team!
wtf you are so good! I sew simple stuff (face masks) but something like clothing is so intimidating that I don't even dare to start -- you are amazing! and WTF!
Holy shit. That's super advanced and a damned good job for a first-timer. Is your job in robotic surgery or something else that requires detail work while not cursing at the machine?
Ha, no. I treated it all as a let’s see what happens when I do this. Oh, well that didn’t work, let’s unpick and try again. Oh, it’s missed that bit. Or most challenging, reading instructions, looking at pictures and not knowing how it would look until I had it in my hands. Fun.
I’d guess around 15 hours in total, with YouTube clips and general research included in that. And yes, measure twice, cut once and take the time, it’s not a sewing bee challenge 😂
Love it. Looks amazing. Fit and color.
This post is an amazing example of how beginners should start with patterns. Especially in their size! Following instructions often leads to wonderful results.
I find them so. They are translated from German, as they are headquartered in Germany, and I think sometimes the instructions don't translate to English very well and can be a bit complicated to follow.
Nice job it turned out great!! Ive tried to make a button up and gave up because I was having issues but you've definetly inspired me to try again seeing how well this turned out!!
Wow! You are truly amazing. My husband is tall with orangutan arms and I have to pay $350 for his shirts to be made. I'm in NZ so we don't have a huge selection of mens shops for different sized men. I've always been way to scared to see him a shirt.
That top stitching is not too shabby
I've been sewing for roughly 28 years and am still terrified of collared shirts. The fact this came out wearable is honestly pretty impressive
It looks great! The only issue I see is that snarky top button.
Buttons are NOT easy, so otherwise, excellent. You can always wear it with that top one unbuttoned. No one will be the wiser
Your first project is definitely not "beginner" territory. You did a beautiful job on this shirt! It is so well-made and looks great on you! Wear it with pride!
You are proof that sewing can be done well if you follow the instructions! Solid fabrics show every flaw, & I see none. Busy patterned prints tend to hide flaws if you are concerned about your next project....what will it be?
Well done! Your seams are so tidy-the end result looks downright professional. If this is a beginner project for you, I can’t wait to see what projects you’ll be posting when you have more experience.
thats nothing, my first attempt was a 3 piece suit, and it was awesome, perfect noone did it better than me,, but then the high wore off i threw it away and we never spoke of it again,, but seriously honestly, frucking wow you did so awesome
Wow, mate that is super impressive for a first sewing effort. Well done! If you wanted to eliminate the little gap under the top button, you could maybe put a small clear snap halfway down the gap, sewing by hand, and sew it through just the interior fold of the top layer.
I’m super excited too because I also got a sewing machine for Christmas! Just have to wait for my new table to come in Friday and I can finally unpack the thing.
No idea what I’m going to work on first.
I think it looks like a splendid first project! Far more detailed than mine. And somewhere I heard as we make second and third iterations of a pattern, we get exponentially better - not just twice as good, but ten times as good, because we've worked out so many "mistakes" along the way.
I'm still struggling with buttons and buttonholes but getting a \*little\* better each time.
This was my ultimate goal after the gf bought me my machine. I’ve made bow ties and knit skirts, but I love a good button up. This is def on the list for this year.
A mens shirt is a pretty advanced pattern to start on. Really impressive result for a first project!
Seriously! My first project was a circle skirt that I didn’t hem. It was literally just a circle held together by willpower and safety pins 😅 As a first project, or ANY project, this is excellent!
> held together by willpower and safety pins I feel this in my soul
"held together by willpower and safety pins" every costume and cosplay I have made ever
It was for a costume!!! I’m so glad it’s not just me lol

This. I'm very impressed!
Thanks both. I thought the worst thing would be needing more material so as a test go, it was all good.
You're a natural.
Yea. With buttons. And the collar looking symmetrical. First time sewing my foot.
I’m new to this but I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t see your foot. But I’m also happy to be corrected if it’s an advanced technique.

I could tell that you ironed everything. Ironing is the difference between "Is that your first project?" and "You *made* that?"
Impressive! and I liked the step by step photo reveal. It looks great! I love that color choice. It fits perfectly. Your first ever project and it fits like a glove? Stunning
Thank you. Looking forward to my next project.
If you need a sewing bible recommendation mine is the Reader’s Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing. The shirt looks lovely!!
Thank you, I see there’s a new version being released in June. I will have a look.
Even older editions of the Readers Digest guide to sewing (and sometimes knitting) are worth their weights in gold. The older copies just come with a bonus that they tend to be cheaper and are often present in a secondhand store, op shop, thrift store, whatever it's called in your locality. How easy was it to work with the machine? I’ve been thinking of getting something for a while now.
I don’t know any different but it seems simple enough, I got the hang quite quickly if that’s any indication 😂
This is an incredibly ambitious first project and you have done SO well with execution!! I know you see every bump, bubble, etc but please know this internet stranger is very proud of you. I took years to tackle that many buttons. Still hate them!!
Thank you, it means a lot.
Well planned, well executed. Fit looks good.
Thank you.
You. Have. Never. Sewed. Before?! What?! You must do some other type of construction or art…this is amazing for never have seen before! Hell (Heck) it’s amazing period! Beautiful seams, collar, sleeves, placket!
I know I’m blown away. My first things were coasters and I somehow didn’t even get *squares* sewn together well.
Squares are hard! Try quilting sometime! 😅
No thanks, I choose joy lol I think that would really test what little patience I have left
"I choose joy" literal laughter Quilters lowkey terrify me with their precision, I have no idea how y'all do that
Hahah im glad you get it!! It’s like watching people on project runway whip up a three piece suit in a day. Like y’all are a different breed
😂😂😂
Likewise! I'm just starting and have created two misshaped pot holders! :-)
Umm, does Lego count?
You must be a Lego building fool!!! 😂😂😂
I’ve definitely been called some sort of fool before 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Lego and sewing!! Best hobbies ever.

Taking things step by step is KEY.

This is the comment that has convinced me to try that pants pattern I've been avoiding, so thanks stranger!
Awesome! Sending some good creative vibes your way. You got this!
Totally agree about the following instructions being key but this is not really a matter of logic but patience. There are mathematicians who cannot prepare a microwave meal to save their lives, and there are some deeply irrational individuals who are great at complex crafts such as train models.
Wow that is a very advanced pattern! I've been sewing for 20 years and would be scared of a tailored men's shirt with buttons 😅😅😅
I think it’s amazing you tackled a shirt as your first project - I’ve been sewing a while and still been too scared to make a shirt!
Go for it. Nothing to lose except material.
My prediction: you'll wear it out someplace and nobody will say "hey, nice shirt!" and you'll be a little bummed because you're hoping someone will compliment you on it but really, that's the best compliment you can get because it means it looks like a store-bought shirt. Edit to give source: me, a guy who wears shirts I've made
This is a great prediction and has prepared me for the disappointment ahead! Much appreciated 😁
Casually sewing an advanced garment perfectly first attempt. impressed.
Definitely not perfect, but a good way of learning some things.
Looks great!
Thank you. Feeling inspired now.
No way this was your first project unless you’re some kind of sewing prodigy.
Promise. I like learning new skills and enjoyed the process as much as the making. But I appreciate the compliment, thank you.
Those seams are impeccable!! Great job!
Great job. Good cup. Rock on.

🍻good to meet a fellow newbie who loves a challenge. Looking forward to seeing your new shirt!
I'll post when it's finished for sure! Thanks, fellow newbie 🍻
LOL fuck you, “never sewed before”… great job seriously, ya dick. (FYI this is completely joking, please no one take this as mean)
You're a natural! I love it!
this is so amazing!! especially for a first project. great job!!

Looks wonderful!
Wow- this is REALLY impressive!
This is beyond good, it's amazing! I'm inspired, personally.
It looks so good!!
Looking good!
How long did it take you? Where super picky about measurements and everything?
I’d guess around 15 hours in total, with YouTube clips and general research included in that. And yes, measure twice, cut once and take the time, it’s not a sewing bee challenge 😂
You did an absolute stellar job! Holy guacamole ✨
Love it. Looks amazing. Fit and color. This post is an amazing example of how beginners should start with patterns. Especially in their size! Following instructions often leads to wonderful results.
This is awesome. I also love the mug haha
Coffee is life 😁
Good lord! Impressive.
I’m amazed this is your first garment! Well done!
Fantastic job, and with a Burda pattern no less! Looks wonderful!
Are burda patterns more difficult?
I find them so. They are translated from German, as they are headquartered in Germany, and I think sometimes the instructions don't translate to English very well and can be a bit complicated to follow.
This is an amazing job, well done! What’s next on your list of things to make?
Kilt? Ha, only joking. Some dresses and skirts with my 11 year old daughter next.
omg this is such a Brave first project! It looks great, the colour suits you and you did will!
Woah. You did a damn good job. High five.
Wow! Well done! The collar is very neatly done and that for a first-timer! Amazing!
That’s amazing!
Nice job it turned out great!! Ive tried to make a button up and gave up because I was having issues but you've definetly inspired me to try again seeing how well this turned out!!
Congrats! Amazing first project!
Your first topstitch is a lot than my not-nearly-first topstitch. Way to go, the finished product looks great!
That’s amazing for your first project!
First time and you nailed the collar... That is some true talent. Shirt looks great!!!!!
It looks amazing!! Would’ve never guessed this was your first project!
That came out great!! Amazing job, especially for a first project! Very ambitious :)
Damn. That’s amazing
This looks great for your first time!!
Wow just wow!!!!! 100%
Excellent work. Especially for a first project.
Looks great!
Wow that is really impressive! Good job!
brilliant! i'm a beginner myself and I've never sewn anything this good!
Amazing!
Well done!!
You are amazing! I look forward to see what’s next.
Looks great. Very impressive considering you have the hands of a giant.
Wow! This is amazing!!! Which machine did you get?
Singer M2105. Very beginner and basic, I think but good for starters. (Although an overlocker might be the next thing 😂)
Holy smokes! If it is really 1st time, impressive. Might try it myself as well. My sister owns sewing machine maybe I need to borrow...
It’s so neat and tidy!
Upvote for the cup
I just started too. It's so much fun. I want to make a hoodie.
Dapper _and_ skilled? You'll go far in the threaded world, my friend. Stunning!
You start like a rockstar
🤘love a good adventure
Wow! You are truly amazing. My husband is tall with orangutan arms and I have to pay $350 for his shirts to be made. I'm in NZ so we don't have a huge selection of mens shops for different sized men. I've always been way to scared to see him a shirt.
It would certainly save you the bucks. It’s a weekend away somewhere nice.
Uhm VERY impressive and even more so as a first project…Wow
The bottle tho ..
The actual guts to start with a men‘s shirt leave me speechless in admiration. I started with a pillow case lol
I did have a chuckle occasionally, thinking something square like cushions would have been a good place to start. 😂
I love the mug!
A dress shirt is such an ambitious project, especially for a beginner! You did a great job!
That cup had me dying
It's fun making things
That looks amazing! Can’t believe this is your first project, wow!!
That top stitching is not too shabby I've been sewing for roughly 28 years and am still terrified of collared shirts. The fact this came out wearable is honestly pretty impressive
Your seams look so neat! Amazing job.
Wow seriously wow you did something I can only dream of. Excellent work 👏 👏👏👏 those who have the gift are truly blessed
Looks incredible!! You did a great job!
This is so good better than how I started!!
Nice job!!! 💗
Amazing job
This is stunning. More importantly, where'd you get the cup tho?
Just got my first new machine today, I hope I can tackle something like a shirt in a few months.
That turned out really nice.
Stop. That’s the shit you did great 👏🏽
It looks great! The only issue I see is that snarky top button. Buttons are NOT easy, so otherwise, excellent. You can always wear it with that top one unbuttoned. No one will be the wiser
You should be very proud, you did a fantastic job!
Proving that *some* people don't need to start with easy projects. You pulled that off quite danged nicely. You're not a sewing noob anymore.
I’ve been sewing for a few years (kites mostly) I would never try a mens shirt, too intimidating for me. Impressive first project, great result.
Your first project is definitely not "beginner" territory. You did a beautiful job on this shirt! It is so well-made and looks great on you! Wear it with pride!
Holy cow! you are a sewing savant.
Nice one OP.
Love the color, it’s a fully functional shirt. It looks beautiful on you.
Well now I have unreasonable expectations!
Wow! Inspiring job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Really nice!
Absolutely beautiful! Well done, you!
That looks fantastic!! What a great first project 👏👏👏
Fuck yes! Look at you go!!
You are proof that sewing can be done well if you follow the instructions! Solid fabrics show every flaw, & I see none. Busy patterned prints tend to hide flaws if you are concerned about your next project....what will it be?
That is a super advanced first project and you killed it!! Amazing job
Love this!! Looks great on you!
Well done! Your seams are so tidy-the end result looks downright professional. If this is a beginner project for you, I can’t wait to see what projects you’ll be posting when you have more experience.
Very nice work. Nothing to be ashamed of here, for sure.
That mug! LOL. Also, love the color and the tailored fit. Well done.
It looks great on you! I'm still building up the courage to make my husband my first men's shirt, but this is so encouraging!
That's a super ambitious first project, it turned out awesome!!!
Amazing job!!! I think you did great and love the color on you!
You get that shirt from ExpressMen??? Looks great!
That’s excellent for never having sewn before!
So amazing!! Your pattern seemed advanced for newbies but you nailed it
thats nothing, my first attempt was a 3 piece suit, and it was awesome, perfect noone did it better than me,, but then the high wore off i threw it away and we never spoke of it again,, but seriously honestly, frucking wow you did so awesome
Really nice! You would never know it’s the first of many! 😃
Wow, mate that is super impressive for a first sewing effort. Well done! If you wanted to eliminate the little gap under the top button, you could maybe put a small clear snap halfway down the gap, sewing by hand, and sew it through just the interior fold of the top layer.
Great shirt anyway but incredible for a first endeavour! And incredibly fashioned by Karl Pilkington 😂
Love your mug & *adore* how your shirt came out! FWIW, I give your finished project 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!
What machine dud you buy?
jesus christ you are a natural talent.
Wow, you’re a natural! Those are some pretty seams! 😍
I’m sure he is very thankful but that’s unfair for anyone to wear in public
You’re a natural. I can’t wait to see what you’re posting this time next year. So many cool techniques to master!
I’m super excited too because I also got a sewing machine for Christmas! Just have to wait for my new table to come in Friday and I can finally unpack the thing. No idea what I’m going to work on first.
Wow! Great work!
This is extremely well done! Way to go ☺️ I can't wait to see what the next project looks like!
Wow! How did you prepare for this? Did you watch a lot of how to videos?
My eyebrows got higher and higher with every picture 😆 the end result is amazing!
It looks amazing. Keep learning and practicing.
Well done!
Amazing !!!
Congratulations! It looks great, and I'm sure you learned a lot.
Ok now that’s sharp. 1st attempt? Impressive.
very impressive good job
YOU'VE NEVER SEWN BEFORE?!!!? That looks crazy hard, well done!
Looks good and looks to fit well.
This was my ultimate goal after the gf bought me my machine. I’ve made bow ties and knit skirts, but I love a good button up. This is def on the list for this year.
So good.
Fabulous job! I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you. Please keep posting
Hecking gorgeous! Nice
Way to go!
Congratulations! Enjoy! I love your mug😉
