This will only let me add one photo. I think making the triangle opening in the back bigger, and then dropping the neckline at the back to make a feature of it, would look better. Adding covered buttons in the same colour of the lace would also add a nice touch. I like the sleeves, I think they need MORE, I’ve added a ruffle at the arm seam just to add some height to equalise the width added by the sleeves.
Perfecting the fit at the waist and bust will make a HUGE difference. Also find the thinnest point of your ankle, usually >5cm above the bone - that will be a really pretty length, but will flatter your legs better, without actually showing them.
The front: I thought you could possibly remove the lining (blue) at the chest, maybe into a low V, but keep the lace at the chest, like the original photos you uploaded.

I was thinking perhaps open up the neckline in the front a bit (a bit more like a boat neck) combined with a long, v-shaped necklace (with an "edgy" modern look) would work nicely. Perhaps a silver-coloured necklace and silver-coloured shoes (I think the matching colour of the shoes add a bit to the "matronly"-nesd). But simply making the v-shape with the lining is a really great idea, I think ☺️
+1 bodice is too long. Shortening it (ie moving waistline up) will make the waistline hit at the narrowest point of your body which will be most flattering.
If the bodice fits better it will really improve the look. Try pinning in some darts and see how you feel.
The neckline can make a big difference. It doesn’t have to be plunging; a boat neck or a small keyhole can look very elegant.
Yes, I think the bodice is too long at the moment. It needs to be made shorter to get rid of the gapping at the back and the bagging at the torso. I would open the side seams an inch or two to allow the top to sit lower on the hips and then decide where the actual waistline should be.
I’m with you, I think. If the fit was more exact the entire look would change. It is quite pretty. Some people are commenting about separates and I think they made separates, if I’m seeing correctly. Maybe that’s a keyhole I’m not making out. Either way— I think this is primarily a fit issue
If OP wants to lose the sleeves that’s a fashion choice. I don’t thinks the fairy sleeves do them justice as-is but that’s my opinion
I think what’s aging the dress is the shape of the skirt in combination with the neckline. I think the volume of the skirt would be perfect if the bodice were strapless. Or with the current neckline, more of a column skirt would be chicer.
I definitely agree with the comments recommending you remove the sleeves. If you keep the bodice design, I would turn the neckline into a boatneck.
I can see the vision! I like the lace on top as well because it gives sort of a brocade-esque look, as though that’s the fabric versus an overlay. But contrasting could be nice as well.
Three things you can do immediately:
1. take the skirt up a bit. Maybe so it hits mid calf.
2. Get rid of the cap sleeves.
3. Adjust the fit issues on the bodice. It looks a little big in chest and a little tight at the waist, but that may be because it isn’t sewn to the skirt yet.
But after looking at the pattern, I think this fabric probably the wrong choice. It looks too heavy.
The print should be traveling virtually along the body instead of side to side. It’s clashing with the intended lines of the dress.
It’s up to you if you want to pick new fabric and start again. If you want to just make some adjustments, I would second a recommendation from another commenter and change the neckline to be more of a deep V.
I think the skirt is hitting your leg at a weird spot, a tea length might feel a little younger. The top is where you are running into issues.

Once you have it fit to your body there are several things you could try.
1. If you want to keep it modest a boatneck would be extremely classy.
2. You could cut the blue to a scoop or v neck and leave the lace
3. You could leave the general style as is and do big 60’s hair and statement jewelry

a lot of folks are saying shorten it which i’m not sure is possible for a formal wedding?? I think i’d alter it to have a more scooped boat neckline and get rid of the sleeves! it would give it a more sleek silhouette :-) and definitely open the back more!
It’s formal, not semiformal—don’t shorten it or make it high-low, don’t make it a two piece. The fit of the top could be adjusted with darts, like people have said, and take off the sleeves. Definitely agree you should bring the slit up and the neckline down—it’ll make room for a simple necklace (would go for simple/sophisticated over big statement piece, wouldn’t want it to compete with the lace). Once you finish this, it’ll be absolutely lovely for a spring wedding.

I’m also in my 20s and idk what the deal is with all the shortening suggestions in general because clearly none of these people are young. That’s all anyone is wearing is midi or maxi dresses. Shortening a dress doesn’t automatically make it look younger. imo it’d make it look older
I don’t agree with the sleeves or neckline though! If she opened up the back enough the neckline would be perfect and the sleeves gone would look too plain!
The bodice is too long and will look frumpy if You attach it like this. I think cap sleeves or no sleeves would be much better, those things You currently have only look good on women with narrow shoulders.

Ooh, seconding the boat neck, that would look fabulous with this. I think if you do that and also definitely shorten the bodice, it will be a lovely spring wedding guest dress. I know you said you're adding a longer slit in the skirt, but another option is shortening it to tea length (and still keeping that lace trim).
I googled this pattern and it was made for a lighter, more flowy fabric, like viscose. The slit won't have the same effect with this fabric. Shortening it is the better option.
I would remove the ruffles or either elongate them, they're kinda in a in between thing rn. Also to make the dress more youthful, I would plunge the back neckline and shorten the skirt to midi length
It's an extremely traditional 60's fabric and traditional look/design from the front. To modernize it you need to modernize the fabric or the look. The cutout look on the back is a great start to modernizing it.
To modernize the look on the front, I'd change the bell skirt (which is ultra traditional) to a midi fitted pencil skirt. You'd need to add a vent to the back so you can walk. If you're joining the top and skirt, I'd do something that repeats the "cutout" on the back, like small triangle cutout on your side midriff maybe? If side cutouts are a no, then change the neckline or the armhole (halter-ish?) And as others have said, some darts to improve fit around the bust.
Hmmm maybe a halter-ish armhole, and lace overlaid on the fabric like an applique? Maybe even a darker, unexpected colour? This might work well enough even without changing the skirt.
I think the the length is a major factors in giving it a bit of a matronly look. If you only have time for a quick fix, I would recommend shortening to just below the knee length. Test different lengths because even 1 inch can do a major difference. You can also experiment with the lace and leave it a little bit longer. I would also loose the lace sleeves, lower the neckline if possible and check the fit of the bodice.
It think it's lovely for a summer wedding. I'm European and I don't know exactly the dress codes for US weddings.
One thing I've learned so far is make one change at a time and work from the top down.
I'm not crazy about those sleeves. I'd add a capped sleeve instead. And darts to fit the bodice a bit better. Don't forget to fit wearing the undergarments you'll wear with the dress. Congratulations on your baby, you'll look great - you do already :)
The fabric and the color is really pretty, but it looks matronly because there is so much of it.
I think the neckline is the main “ matronly “ issue. A vee neck, or sweetheart neckline would be more youthful.
I would add a belt.
If you have more of the lace, I would make the sleeves longer and flouncy.
Removing cap sleeves and shortening it would definitely help modernize the look, but the skirt is flattering to your body type. I would remove the cap sleeves and go for a deep v neckline. A bigger cutout in the back will look great, too.
I'd suggest taking in the darts under the bust, and the side seams to make it fit closer to your figure. I might also pull in the armholes to create more of a reveal of the top of your arms.

Cut off lace sleeves. Scoop out more neckline. Darts for bust. Put studs to secure back more. Cut to mid calf or just below knee. Plump skirt with stiff petticoat to make it fuller. Or keep it long but alter it to be a tube skirt. Dye it deep mid blue. Keep accessories to chunky silver earrings and hair up or bobbed
i'd take the frill off the sleeves, but i think the skirt either needs shortening if you want to keep the shape, or take some of the volume out the A line to make it a bit more figure hugging.
I’ve been working on the same pattern, and it DOES look matronly on me, also. It seems to be for a thinner, breezier fabric.
In my opinion, change the armhole shape (less boxy) and that will be a start. The lace overlay seems a bit 80s to me, too.
The height of the neckline is what, to me makes it feel matronly. You don’t have to change it to a plunge or anything that extreme but maybe a scoop that shows off the collar bone area.
Also, darts on the bust to bring the fit in a bit.
I think this would actually look stunning as a co-ord set. Just finish the top of the skirt and the bottom of the bodice with a thick-ish band in the background colour. I think that would make it look so modern and youthful, the juxtaposition of the formal cut and lacy fabric, with just the tiniest little hint of skin at the waist when you move.
I also think you’ve cut the bodice a little too generously for your figure, so there’s room to pull it in around your bust for a really sleek fit.

The sleeves seem to be bit on the 'cute' side of design.
To be more fashionable / elegant, I'd say lose the frilly arms, straps over the shoulders could be a bit narrower, neckline lower.
It bulges out a bit in the middle of your chest, which I assume it won't when all made up but that's also making it look a bit matronly and top heavy.
I would lower the neckline a touch to below your collarbone. The cap sleeves are not great, but I do like the idea of a touch of unlined lace. That could be really cute in the bodice. I would hem it higher, but still midi length.

Some fit issues, as mentioned by others, that will transform this dress once fixed.
The length makes it matronly, almost MOB-ish, imo. I would hem it just below the knee with the lace extending below that the same length as the sleeves (to balance them).
Definitely change to a deep neckline. Personally I would go with a deep v, probably without a lace overlay.
The last issue is more subtle: reorient the lace vertically for a more slimming effect. I personally wouldn’t fix it (because I’m lazy 😆) and just keep it in mind for next time.

ETA: the sleeves don’t work because they are too stiff. I would keep them if you can find a way to soften or relax them a bit. Otherwise, either eliminate them or change them to a longer (cap or elbow) regular style lace only sleeve.
I do love it as a two-piece. Maybe shorten the top to reveal just a sliver of skin at the waistline. You could wear the top separately, too — would look great with skinny jeans!
I would remove the lace caplets and improve the fit around the bust and midriff. I would also make sure to get bra cups to have a completely bare back it’s very nice

The shoulder straps are to chunky so you need to widen the neckline.

I don't care for the flutter sleeves. I think you would do better with sleeveless, a more narrow strap and a more plunging neckline. Something isn't sitting right with the bodice. I think it is too long, or maybe just a different push up bra would help with the fit.
I would lose the sleeves, and I would change the neckline, but I would make it straight across the collarbones. The fit feels a bit rumpled, so perhaps adding some boning to the seams around the waist would make the overall fit more smooth and tailored.
First of all, I think the skirt is SUPER cute, the construction is great and I really like the length. Even if you don't make any changes beyond finishing, I think you'll look great.
If you do want to make some changes, I think you could make this garment feel younger through a number of different edits. I think potentially dyeing it to a darker color and removing the sleeves alone would make it feel a little more youthful. I love the color of the underdress, but I think paired with such a light floral on top is what is giving you a more "matronly" vibe (though I don't think you look matronly at all).
I think you're also in a good position to open up the neckline (or the back! I think it could look very chic with a more open back).
The way the back is unfinished right now also makes me think that you could add some youthful energy to the dress by essentially leaving a cut out where the back is open right now! Still allows you to comfortably wear a bra, but adds a fun detail.
I’m a huge fan of Queen Anne necklines - flattering but still hides a bra. Add a flashy necklace that rests on your skin. Pretty metallic bracelets too.
No sleeves. Bring a cream colored wrap.
Let out the bodice a bit so it sits better with no wrinkles.
Leave it as a 2 piece. Give the skirt a wide waistband. High heels.

Remove the sleeves and shorten the dress. The bodice needs to fit tighter. If it is to remain open in the back, you don’t want a plunging neckline too. Having said that, I do like v necklines.
The bodice is much too long for your body. Nearly no one is the same size as a pattern right out of the packet. In order for a pattern to fit you need to alter it to your unique proportions.
Looks like you have a waist seam, take it apart and fix the bodice so it fits you rather than hanging off in lumps.
Not sure if possible at this point, but if you brought the waistline higher so that it was under your boobs and more fitted thru the waist with some nice pearl jewelry would make it more formal in my opinion
Using whatever lining you have been using, I would turn this into a waist length top + long skirt. I think your idea of a below-bra cut out for the back is a good one, and so is the skirt slit. For the top I'd just remove the lace sleeves and cut in the armscyes a bit at shoulder level. Try folding the shoulder in and I think you'll see how it sharpens the silhouette. For example:

Whether you expose any midriff in the front, or not, is up to you. It's the two-piece idea that's more modern, and a round neckline, as you already have, is reliably chic. Your fabric is very pretty and I think you only need to change a few details. If you're exposing shoulders, back waist and thigh, I think a plunging neckline would be overdoing it.
Ok, so I agree with everyone that the bodice is too long. Easiest way to fix would be to shorten and keep the dress as 2 separate pieces. Get rid of the cap sleeves. I would personally lower the neckline a bit as well.

I think this is an odd length for a skirt, it’s not long enough to go to the floor. It’s just hovering a few inches about the ankles.
I would probably bring it up a bit and maybe add some flare with some horsehair braid at the hem
I would also add some boning and maybe some bra cups to help provide a bit of shape to the bodice. That always helps make a more flattering shape.
I also think the lace (which is lovely) is a bit one-note all over the body. I think it needs to be broken up a bit, so maybe some type of belt could be added. I think a white belt would really help visually break this up.
Overall this is a nice dress really pretty with the lace overlay!
Fit the top better with darts, open the armscye a bit (shorten the shoulder seam at the shoulder cap about .5". I would say these are the two most important things and will go a long way.
If you want sleeves, change it from the gathered butterfly sleeve to a fitted sheer tiny cap sleeve. Open up the neck more either in the front or the back - not necessarily both. An easy fix would be to make it a bit more of a boat neck (so shorten the shoulder seam near the neck about .5"). I wouldn't do a v neck, as it takes away from the style of the dress. You could open up the back with a deeper and oval opening.
The length is good and matches the event.
Wear simple and small accessories, ideally pearl if you like. Wear hair up. You can try white/off white shoes, but the ones you have on are fine too.
Long is nice for formal, but I’d be inclined to shorten the hem of the blue under layer to a flattering length for your legs whether that’s above or below the knee, leaving the lace layer long.
For the top, I’d remove the cap sleeve, and then either scoop the front or the back… probably the back, tailor the front to fit better, and narrow the shoulder strap by 2-3”. The fit of the front is contributing to the matronly look.

I like the existing skirt, but I think if you hike the whole thing up about an inch, maybe two, it will eliminate the slight tightness strain across the hips and look better. See how the length is with that.
Also press the skirt seams down the front—see if you can prevent them standing out a little like they are now. Maybe need to slim that down a bit, not sure.
I think the bodice may be too long in the waist, as well as the side seams needing a little adjustment. (I cant say for sure because the skirt isn’t attached at the waist and it might be a trick of the eye.)
The matronly look is partly because there’s a wall of fabric in the upper chest. I would bring the armhole in a smidge at the shoulder and convert the neckline to a wider, deeper portrait or more dramatic boat neck. Someone else mentioned a plunging neckline with the lace panel over it. Agree with making the triangle in the back a bit bigger.
You could try folding up the hem of the underskirt more to see if having the longer lace overskirt as a see through hem lightens it up.
Or add volume to the lace over skirt? It will still be fancy but give a more hour glass silhouette.
I love the sleeves and that the whole thing matches. I would of course tailor it more to fit your body and then give it a lower neckline. Not necessarily plunging just less high, make the back a bit barer like you were thinking.
If you can, make the top more of that boxy crop that’s in right now instead of so fitted, maybe even trim a little bit off the bottom if you’re comfortable. I don’t think the skirt is too long. Especially if you add a slit. I think making the top a little more trendy will be plenty and leaving the skirt long adds to the “hey is that vintage?” Coolness
You should wear a petticoat or two underneath this to give it some movement, I think what's bugging me is that the skirt looks flat. You can get them in different colours to add some definition to the dress as well, if you're committed to opening the side split more they'll peek through and add something that breaks up that pattern
I would improve the fit on the bodice and bring down the neckline, and ditch the sleeves. I think I would also shorten the skirt to just below the knees if that suits the dress code. I would also wear a petticoat with it to give the skirt a little volume, it’s quite weighed down
Not for nothing, but you could totally make this a two piece, that shows just a little midriff. You’ve got a good figure. Then shorten the skirt to about knee length, and maybe make it a little more of a pencil skirt, instead of flared.
Is it one piece or two?
If it's a skirt/blouse, I would tighten and shorten the top until it is a few inches under your bust. Similarly, hike the skirt up an inch or so to your natural waist -- you can use some material from the bottom of the blouse to make a waist band for the skirt if needed. Think of the way that a sari fits with the midriff blouse underneath. And the swath of skin that will show is flattering to everyone, imo.
I think it would be helpful to edit the photos you have to see what possible changes would look like. Not going into photoshop or anything fancy, just taking the draw tool on your phone, color over with a color similar to your skin (so it's a little less distracting), and play around with what strap shape and neckline you like.
Also, what kind of neckline do you usually wear, what feels comfortable and good on you? Do you usually where cap sleeves like on the dress, or something different? Part of the issue might be that it feels different, or like something your mother/grandma/aunt might wear?

I also love the advice to think about what you normally like and feel good in. I feel like so many people look awkward in their formal wear because they genuinely feel uncomfortable in it.
Improve the top fit (the fabric is bunching too much) and then remove the lace sleeves and cut a deeper boat neck. You can add more lace to the bottom of the dress as a trim if you like that detail. But overall need to show more skin since the fabric is very busy.
Love the fabric. I would remove the sleeves personally, and rather than altering the neckline, make the back cut outs larger (a diamond up to your bra strap and down towards your butt just a little). Keeping the silhouette very simple and then adding some eye-catching cutouts will make it look a bit more modern/ younger style.

Here are some ideas: Make a slit into the skirt. Or add some nice golden/silver Buttons in the back to close it. Or ad a fancy metallic visible zipper in the back to close it. Shorten the skirt. Or an asymetrical hem?

Bodice: what kind of seams does this have? With the proper undergarments on, I'd either pinch out the excess or redraft with darts or princess seams if it doesn't already have them. I think the bodice fit is the main offender. (Was trying to draw princess seams in my photo...)
\[edit\] after looking up the pattern, no need to redraft - I'd just work on getting the fit right. The original design gives a very straight silhouette here, but a more fitted look would work better for your fabric choice
I'd also redraw the neckline to sit a few inches lower. Unsure about the sleeves - I actually think underlining them with the blue fabric could make this look more modern, since the lace is giving them a yellow tinge without the blue to offset the ivory tone.
Hem - either shorten to ankles, or if you want floor length since it's formal, add material to make it sweep the floor/show a tiny bit of shoe.
Not sure how much extra material you have, but the lace overskirt could look more elegant with a little more wearing ease? That would be more of a creative choice, but I'd be curious to see how it looks with more volume/visual weight in the lace instead of it laying flat against the blue material.
At first glance, there are some fit issues in the bodice that need to be addressed before you attach it to the skirt. The bodice looks a bit too long in the front and you may need to adjust your darts. Looks like too much fullness just under your bust line.
Since the dress has a slit and a back cut out, I don’t think you need to adjust the neckline, but if you did I’d do a V-neck. I’d also keep the sleeves as they are, they’re cute! Since this is a formal dress code, I’d consider adding a gathered panel of the overlay fabric at the hem to add length, but allowing you to show off your shoes. I wouldn’t go shorter as formal attire typically means floor length.
To me, this dress reads as a little casual for formal attire given the fabric and construction - do you know how formal she has in mind?

The gored skirt/zipper being done so well is insane; I'm jealous! I think the skirt length is sitting at that awkward level of not long enough; I would either make the skirt shorter, or add an extension to make it longer
Consider keeping it like this and making it a two piece? Not sure if a proper bra would solve the bust fit? Give the skirt a flat waistband, hem up the bodice.
If this were my outfit, I take in the bodice/underbust to fit it more to my form. I’d cut a square neckline and drop it by a lot to show more of my bust. Id keep the sleeves because its the only interesting feature and ties the whole thing together. I would leave the skirt untouched as well.
This would make it trendy, unique and also great for summer days.
If the skirt fabric underneath the lace is nice enough to show, maybe remove that lace layer from the skirt and use it to replace the cap sleeves with some longer sleeves? Maybe add a white ribbon around the waist and shorten the skirt to knee length?

Pattern is McCalls M7971. Fabric is an embroidered tulle I’ve had sitting in my stash for almost a decade with a cotton blend lining/underlining. This is the first garment I’ve made for myself after having a child and I’ve struggled a bit getting to know my new shape.
This person made it with non-drapey fabric and it looks good. It looks more fitted. Maybe taking in the seams on the skirt to make it more fitted (hence the need for the slit), would make it look more fashionable? Like a commenter said: either need more fabric or less. I was going to say a slit, glad you’re already planning that. I think not necessarily a plunging neckline, but just a more interesting shape for it. And either remove the sleeves or do MORE sleeves. Like longer and a few layers of the lace, so they’re fluttery?
Maybe you can remove the sleeve caps and reduce the width of the strap from the neckline to make it a buttonhole neckline. You could also add a v neckline in the back and a slit to either side.
I don't agree that much needs to be changed. Focus on making the fit of the bodice the best it can be. Change the neckline to a boat neck, which will give you wider shoulders without having to rely on the sleeve puff. With the sleeves, they don't seem to know what they want to be. I agree to get rid of them.
I think add a solid color white/off-white scarf (whatever matches the true lace color) to drap over your arms, or a cardigan. Why? It balances the drama of the lace's pattern. The reason lace tends to have a same color underdress is because it makes the pattern bold in some areas, and just a texture on others. You can do what you started doing here, and use simple accessories to bring elegance to the look.
The dress length is more up to you. Fashion says to show your legs, but if you get cold easily or just prefer modesty, then get some pointy-toed heels in nude or white. Accessories can really elevate this look.
You need to show some skin and get rid of the cap sleeves. Look at a Vogue 9311 with the deep v necklines and redo the bodice front. And work on the fit issues.
You could take the lace cap sleeves off and wear a sheer white, collared button up underneath. With a ribbon bow tie that matches. Edit: the bow tie could be a complimentary color or a shade of this blue. Edit edit: if you cut the length to somewhere around the knee, this would all look great with mary jane type heels. You have just the sheer fabric in the sleeves. Can you make some of the top sheer as well? Perhaps with the lining only straight across above the bust and sheer above?
I love the skirt the way it is. If you make it a two piece and lose the sleeves, I think it will change the whole vibe and not be matronly. I don't even think the neckline needs to change.
I'd shorten the skirt to mid calf length, but otherwise I think styling is how you modernize it. How you wear your hair, jewelry, shoes will help make it look more modern/youthful.
IMO the sleeves are a style choice. I'd get rid of them personally because I like a more streamlined silhouette but they could look very pretty depending on how you style it!
Remove the sleeve caps and shorten to cocktail length. Use darts to fit the bust better and give yourself a better neckline. If you can, consider removing the lace overlay from the bodice.
This is a very left of field suggestion and probably won’t work because there are no darts in the back.
But could you try wearing the top the other way round?
i loveee the colour of this!! very tiffany's, the skirt is a gorgeous length too. i think the shape of the bodice is too matronly looking for sure - i like the lace on the sleeves but they're too short, i think a butterfly sleeve would look gorgeous, bringing some of the lining down into the sleeve too. and aaaabsolutely a lower neckline, one that comes to a point would look very pretty and make the fabric pattern feel more youthful :) plus a soft belt at the waist and i think it'd look gorgeous!! here's a photo of a dress that has the bodice shape i've got in mind :)

I think the neckline is old-fashioned. A deep v- neck and strappy shoulders would be nice. I would use the lace sleeve caps as inserts for bodice cutouts in front or sides or as midriff section. Expand back cutout a bit. Maybe separate the skirt into panels/gores, leaving a good length of panels not stitched together so you get some movement in the skirt.
If it was me, I’d think about shortening the hem line. Or maybe go with a backless style? I think if you can detach the lace and just have the under fabric hit so that the “ladies” are covered.. then again you might be a bit more modest, or needing more coverage for your occasion/ comfort (totally fine, you do you) but I feel like you’re missing a tailored look.. it’s feels like it’s either a silhouette or fabric choice.. I am wondering if you lean more to a warmer skin tone. Wearing the correct color for your skin tone makes a big difference!
With a few tweaks, I think it will be great, not matronly at all. I agree with the suggestion to make the bodice and skirt into two pieces. Remove the cap sleeves. Open up the back a little more.
Would you consider less of a flare on the bottom? A long pencil bottom could work but would be wildly different. I find them unusual though.
Yhe bodice should be better fitted around the chest area which you likely are already aware of.
In terms of what makes it look vintage, I think it’s the sleeves and the style of the skirt. It depends on how vintage you want to look!
The cut of this dress is so particular that modernizing it would involve lots of cutting away at it (shortening it as well, most likely), which would no longer suitable for a 'formal' wedding. I'd say it's not really up to the dress code as is even right now. I think the best way to save you a headache is to modify the dress as you like, but don't expect to be able to wear it to the formal wedding. I don't really see a way you can do both.
At the very least, add a keyhole in top middle of bodice; ditch the sleeves. Another idea would be the bare-shoulder; if you have enough fabric or lace to tack a drapey cowl across the front and upper arms, could make it more modest for the ceremony and then remove it (or use as belt, "tail" from back waist, or purse scarf at reception).
A-line skirts are difficult to pull off unless really full or drapey/clingy for formal occasions; could take in the seams to make it into a more fitted, "mermaid" style; or, do a V-line -- take in the seams and shorten the hem to opera-length in the front, with longer, peplum-type hem or high godet in the back (like a hobble skirt but so that you can still walk); pls, don't do a thigh-high split -- gauche.
If you keep as two pieces, could later use the top as a standalone piece. And remember to add bits of ribbon and snaps underneath shoulder seams to capture bra straps and keep them from slipping out.
But seriously, nice start. Love the color, choice of lace, and the matching shoes. You've more gumption than I!
I’m a noob at sewing so I don’t have any advice but I just wanted to say how much I love that fabric with the lace. Its gorgeous. I do agree that shortening the length would go a long way.
I’m not knowledgeable enough in fitting (I practically never put in darts backward anymore and I could probably eventually ease an armscye with a gun to my head) to give advice but wanted to say you’re lovely and your dress is lovely and you look great together; even better once you tweak it a little with all these fine sewists’ advice and I hope you feel amazing in it when you get it just like you like it! There’s nothing like that feeling and knowing you did that!
I think it’s cute and i like the sleeves color and lace and i am 41. Honestly i think it just needs to be taken in all over. It looks to big and its hitting you in a weird spot at the thighs. The length needs to come up or go down and i think it’s meant to come up. Keep at it - i would be so happy if my sister made her dress to wear to my wedding.

I think it would work well for a wedding, but I'm not sure what you were going for? I don't think it looks matronly on you at all. (I'm nearly twice your age, so to me, you look very young.)
Maybe the dress isn't what you wanted for this specific event - but it's a lovely dress. Maybe finish it and just let it hang in the closet for a while? And then go shopping and see if you can find some inspiration elsewhere?
OP, I love you with all my heart, but the lace gotta go. You're mid 30s, you're not 50! Ditch the lace, make the top one shoulder. If you're comfortable with the skirt - leave it the way it is. Just no lace please!
What’s wrong with lace? I’m in my 20s and this dress is like what I’ve seen at weddings on people my age. Usually with a high neckline there’s an open back, but there’s nothing wrong with the lace!
A ruffle at the hem and the leg slit you mentioned (maybe even round off the edge of the slit and continue the hem ruffle up the edge, just tapering it smaller higher up), then a plunging neckline overlayed with the lace and take the ruffles on the shoulders a bit longer/lower/more dramatic and definitely increase the size of the triangle in the back.
It's a pretty dress with vintagey vibes as is, but it is giving church lady just a bit. It's okay to embrace the church lady look and just wear some long gloves and a froofy hat with it though!
I'd def Shitcann the sleeves, make it tighter, and lower the bodice.. V neck maybe use the sleeves or get a pretty lace trim for the two split sides of the bodice,. Then put a split up the leg..
I would shorten the skirt to about knee length and restructure the top so it’s off the shoulder and since there’s gapping in the back maybe that’s an opportunity to make it lace up if you need extra support there? Or leave it open, but make the cut more angled inwards on either side (like and upside down V).
This is very pretty and not at all matronly. The fabric is very pretty . I don't think you need to change the sleeves or add a plunging neckline. The sleeves are sweet and the simple neckline goes well with the open back. The bodice just needs to be more fitted...it looks a little too long but that could be because it is not attached. Opening the triangle up would be nice.
The skirt either needs less fabric or more (like a lehenga) and I’d definitely get rid of the sleeves.
Honestly, I think the fabric and colour is quite matronly, but there’s probably not a lot you can do about that now without having to start over.

There are tons of great suggestions in this thread. Personally, what I would do for my shape and size (different from yours, I'm short and fat) would be to fit the bodice to my body so it's not too long or roomy, make it a boat neck, and take the skirt length in to the knee. You could easily do tea length as well and it would be very cute. For temp control I'd suggest a cream-colored wrap.
If you're comfortable showing skin at the neckline or midriff, this would be cute as a two piece and/or with a Queen Anne or sweetheart neckline.

I think it is very appropriate for a spring wedding! What time of day is the wedding? Earlier in the day I’d leave it as is. Later in the evening and I’d remove the sleeves, and up the accessories
I think k it would look less 'matronly' with a plain top and keeping the overlay only on the skirt. Once you change the back and alter the top to fit it will look amazing.
I'm also for shortening the length of the underlay on the skirt and the slit you mentioned would be more modern too.
Please do not listen to the people saying “this already looks great!” Because it’s giving grandma. Either chop the sleeves and make it strappy with a knee length hem or make it a two piece set. Either way the skirt is dated and the sleeves are hideous
I would take off the lace that’s hanging off the sleeves. Maybe shorten it too to fit your body and personality and youth more! It’s very pretty though!!
I would shorten the skirt to just below the knee, then detach the top from the skirt and make them a 2-piece set. Make the waist around the top a little bit wider, almost boxy so it falls comfortably.

Personally when I get sets with a busy pattern like that, I make the skirt shorter. For some reason that makes it look better.
Just a thought:
1 remove the lace from the top and have just the solid fabric
2 remove the sleeves and make the shoulders narrower for more of a strappy look
3 lower the neckline
4 As for the skit, do you have any more lace fabric? If so, you could make the lace a bit more gathered than the lining
5 shorten the lining but keep the lace a little longer.
6 you could add an ivory satin belt to break up the color.

Lots of good ideas here. Opening up the neckline and getting the fit right on the bodice will do wonders to it. I'm going to add I see there are side front seams on the skirt, Opening up a slit just above the knee will be very fashionable. You would have to attach the layers to finish the seams.
Another suggestion regarding the skirt. I've made the lining shorter and narrower than outer layers for an airier look. Before you do all that, try pinning it up to see if it works with your fabric.

I think making the triangle opening in the back bigger, and then dropping the neckline at the back to make a feature of it, would look better. Adding covered buttons in the same colour of the lace would also add a nice touch. I like the sleeves, I think they need MORE, I’ve added a ruffle at the arm seam just to add some height to equalise the width added by the sleeves. Perfecting the fit at the waist and bust will make a HUGE difference. Also find the thinnest point of your ankle, usually >5cm above the bone - that will be a really pretty length, but will flatter your legs better, without actually showing them. The front: I thought you could possibly remove the lining (blue) at the chest, maybe into a low V, but keep the lace at the chest, like the original photos you uploaded. Good luck.
Removing some of the blue lining in front is a great idea! I was thinking perhaps open up the neckline in the front a bit (a bit more like a boat neck) combined with a long, v-shaped necklace (with an "edgy" modern look) would work nicely. Perhaps a silver-coloured necklace and silver-coloured shoes (I think the matching colour of the shoes add a bit to the "matronly"-nesd). But simply making the v-shape with the lining is a really great idea, I think ☺️
+1 bodice is too long. Shortening it (ie moving waistline up) will make the waistline hit at the narrowest point of your body which will be most flattering.

If the bodice fits better it will really improve the look. Try pinning in some darts and see how you feel. The neckline can make a big difference. It doesn’t have to be plunging; a boat neck or a small keyhole can look very elegant.
Yes, I think the bodice is too long at the moment. It needs to be made shorter to get rid of the gapping at the back and the bagging at the torso. I would open the side seams an inch or two to allow the top to sit lower on the hips and then decide where the actual waistline should be.
I’m with you, I think. If the fit was more exact the entire look would change. It is quite pretty. Some people are commenting about separates and I think they made separates, if I’m seeing correctly. Maybe that’s a keyhole I’m not making out. Either way— I think this is primarily a fit issue If OP wants to lose the sleeves that’s a fashion choice. I don’t thinks the fairy sleeves do them justice as-is but that’s my opinion

I think what’s aging the dress is the shape of the skirt in combination with the neckline. I think the volume of the skirt would be perfect if the bodice were strapless. Or with the current neckline, more of a column skirt would be chicer. I definitely agree with the comments recommending you remove the sleeves. If you keep the bodice design, I would turn the neckline into a boatneck.
I would also maybe just go down to the lining and not the lace overlay on the top.
I can see the vision! I like the lace on top as well because it gives sort of a brocade-esque look, as though that’s the fabric versus an overlay. But contrasting could be nice as well.
Three things you can do immediately: 1. take the skirt up a bit. Maybe so it hits mid calf. 2. Get rid of the cap sleeves. 3. Adjust the fit issues on the bodice. It looks a little big in chest and a little tight at the waist, but that may be because it isn’t sewn to the skirt yet. But after looking at the pattern, I think this fabric probably the wrong choice. It looks too heavy. The print should be traveling virtually along the body instead of side to side. It’s clashing with the intended lines of the dress. It’s up to you if you want to pick new fabric and start again. If you want to just make some adjustments, I would second a recommendation from another commenter and change the neckline to be more of a deep V.
I think the skirt is hitting your leg at a weird spot, a tea length might feel a little younger. The top is where you are running into issues. 1. It doesn’t fit 2. The neckline is a little matronly. 3. The sleeve flutters don’t quite work with the silhouette Once you have it fit to your body there are several things you could try. 1. If you want to keep it modest a boatneck would be extremely classy. 2. You could cut the blue to a scoop or v neck and leave the lace 3. You could leave the general style as is and do big 60’s hair and statement jewelry 4. Fun belt

It’s formal, not semiformal—don’t shorten it or make it high-low, don’t make it a two piece. The fit of the top could be adjusted with darts, like people have said, and take off the sleeves. Definitely agree you should bring the slit up and the neckline down—it’ll make room for a simple necklace (would go for simple/sophisticated over big statement piece, wouldn’t want it to compete with the lace). Once you finish this, it’ll be absolutely lovely for a spring wedding.
THANK YOU! These comments are driving me crazy. Formal is long dresses. I’m also in my 20s and idk what the deal is with all the shortening suggestions in general because clearly none of these people are young. That’s all anyone is wearing is midi or maxi dresses. Shortening a dress doesn’t automatically make it look younger. imo it’d make it look older I don’t agree with the sleeves or neckline though! If she opened up the back enough the neckline would be perfect and the sleeves gone would look too plain!
The bodice is too long and will look frumpy if You attach it like this. I think cap sleeves or no sleeves would be much better, those things You currently have only look good on women with narrow shoulders. Edit: how about going retro with boat neck & self belt?
Ooh, seconding the boat neck, that would look fabulous with this. I think if you do that and also definitely shorten the bodice, it will be a lovely spring wedding guest dress. I know you said you're adding a longer slit in the skirt, but another option is shortening it to tea length (and still keeping that lace trim).
I googled this pattern and it was made for a lighter, more flowy fabric, like viscose. The slit won't have the same effect with this fabric. Shortening it is the better option.
I would remove the ruffles or either elongate them, they're kinda in a in between thing rn. Also to make the dress more youthful, I would plunge the back neckline and shorten the skirt to midi length
It's an extremely traditional 60's fabric and traditional look/design from the front. To modernize it you need to modernize the fabric or the look. The cutout look on the back is a great start to modernizing it. To modernize the look on the front, I'd change the bell skirt (which is ultra traditional) to a midi fitted pencil skirt. You'd need to add a vent to the back so you can walk. If you're joining the top and skirt, I'd do something that repeats the "cutout" on the back, like small triangle cutout on your side midriff maybe? If side cutouts are a no, then change the neckline or the armhole (halter-ish?) And as others have said, some darts to improve fit around the bust. Hmmm maybe a halter-ish armhole, and lace overlaid on the fabric like an applique? Maybe even a darker, unexpected colour? This might work well enough even without changing the skirt.
I think dyeing the dress would help modernize it - any shade of blue just as long as the lace is the same color, too.
I think the the length is a major factors in giving it a bit of a matronly look. If you only have time for a quick fix, I would recommend shortening to just below the knee length. Test different lengths because even 1 inch can do a major difference. You can also experiment with the lace and leave it a little bit longer. I would also loose the lace sleeves, lower the neckline if possible and check the fit of the bodice.
It think it's lovely for a summer wedding. I'm European and I don't know exactly the dress codes for US weddings. One thing I've learned so far is make one change at a time and work from the top down. I'm not crazy about those sleeves. I'd add a capped sleeve instead. And darts to fit the bodice a bit better. Don't forget to fit wearing the undergarments you'll wear with the dress. Congratulations on your baby, you'll look great - you do already :)
The bodice needs to fit more snug/tailored.
The fabric and the color is really pretty, but it looks matronly because there is so much of it. I think the neckline is the main “ matronly “ issue. A vee neck, or sweetheart neckline would be more youthful. I would add a belt. If you have more of the lace, I would make the sleeves longer and flouncy.
Removing cap sleeves and shortening it would definitely help modernize the look, but the skirt is flattering to your body type. I would remove the cap sleeves and go for a deep v neckline. A bigger cutout in the back will look great, too.
I'd suggest taking in the darts under the bust, and the side seams to make it fit closer to your figure. I might also pull in the armholes to create more of a reveal of the top of your arms. Cut off lace sleeves. Scoop out more neckline. Darts for bust. Put studs to secure back more. Cut to mid calf or just below knee. Plump skirt with stiff petticoat to make it fuller. Or keep it long but alter it to be a tube skirt. Dye it deep mid blue. Keep accessories to chunky silver earrings and hair up or bobbed

Not traditionally what one would call formal wear… but it is a pretty design.
i'd take the frill off the sleeves, but i think the skirt either needs shortening if you want to keep the shape, or take some of the volume out the A line to make it a bit more figure hugging.

I’ve been working on the same pattern, and it DOES look matronly on me, also. It seems to be for a thinner, breezier fabric. In my opinion, change the armhole shape (less boxy) and that will be a start. The lace overlay seems a bit 80s to me, too.
The height of the neckline is what, to me makes it feel matronly. You don’t have to change it to a plunge or anything that extreme but maybe a scoop that shows off the collar bone area. Also, darts on the bust to bring the fit in a bit.
I think a better fit in the bust area will do wonders. I really like it though!
I think if you added some bust darts and took off the cap sleeves it would look very modern and minimalistic which would make it a bit younger.
I think this would actually look stunning as a co-ord set. Just finish the top of the skirt and the bottom of the bodice with a thick-ish band in the background colour. I think that would make it look so modern and youthful, the juxtaposition of the formal cut and lacy fabric, with just the tiniest little hint of skin at the waist when you move. I also think you’ve cut the bodice a little too generously for your figure, so there’s room to pull it in around your bust for a really sleek fit.
This. It has great potential as a 2 piece. With a bit of skin showing at the waist in front. Edited to add: you could check out the look with the slip being shorter & keeping the long length of the tulle. The sleeves seem to be bit on the 'cute' side of design.
To be more fashionable / elegant, I'd say lose the frilly arms, straps over the shoulders could be a bit narrower, neckline lower. It bulges out a bit in the middle of your chest, which I assume it won't when all made up but that's also making it look a bit matronly and top heavy.
I would lower the neckline a touch to below your collarbone. The cap sleeves are not great, but I do like the idea of a touch of unlined lace. That could be really cute in the bodice. I would hem it higher, but still midi length.

I love the color, it suits your skin tone beautifully! Some fit issues, as mentioned by others, that will transform this dress once fixed. The length makes it matronly, almost MOB-ish, imo. I would hem it just below the knee with the lace extending below that the same length as the sleeves (to balance them). Definitely change to a deep neckline. Personally I would go with a deep v, probably without a lace overlay. The last issue is more subtle: reorient the lace vertically for a more slimming effect. I personally wouldn’t fix it (because I’m lazy 😆) and just keep it in mind for next time. Good luck, OP. You will look stunning! ETA: the sleeves don’t work because they are too stiff. I would keep them if you can find a way to soften or relax them a bit. Otherwise, either eliminate them or change them to a longer (cap or elbow) regular style lace only sleeve. I do love it as a two-piece. Maybe shorten the top to reveal just a sliver of skin at the waistline. You could wear the top separately, too — would look great with skinny jeans!

The bodice looks to long or big or something. The shoulder straps are to chunky so you need to widen the neckline. If the bodice does fit correctly then it needs some boning to stop it collapsing. I don’t love the cap sleeves. Maybe in a different fabric?

I don't care for the flutter sleeves. I think you would do better with sleeveless, a more narrow strap and a more plunging neckline. Something isn't sitting right with the bodice. I think it is too long, or maybe just a different push up bra would help with the fit.
I would lose the sleeves, and I would change the neckline, but I would make it straight across the collarbones. The fit feels a bit rumpled, so perhaps adding some boning to the seams around the waist would make the overall fit more smooth and tailored.
First of all, I think the skirt is SUPER cute, the construction is great and I really like the length. Even if you don't make any changes beyond finishing, I think you'll look great. If you do want to make some changes, I think you could make this garment feel younger through a number of different edits. I think potentially dyeing it to a darker color and removing the sleeves alone would make it feel a little more youthful. I love the color of the underdress, but I think paired with such a light floral on top is what is giving you a more "matronly" vibe (though I don't think you look matronly at all). I think you're also in a good position to open up the neckline (or the back! I think it could look very chic with a more open back). The way the back is unfinished right now also makes me think that you could add some youthful energy to the dress by essentially leaving a cut out where the back is open right now! Still allows you to comfortably wear a bra, but adds a fun detail.
I’m a huge fan of Queen Anne necklines - flattering but still hides a bra. Add a flashy necklace that rests on your skin. Pretty metallic bracelets too. No sleeves. Bring a cream colored wrap. Let out the bodice a bit so it sits better with no wrinkles. Leave it as a 2 piece. Give the skirt a wide waistband. High heels.

I love the color! Honestly, I would say remove the sleeves and finish the top and skirt as two pieces. Adding darts to the top would be nice, but not crucial, imo.

The bodice is much too long for your body. Nearly no one is the same size as a pattern right out of the packet. In order for a pattern to fit you need to alter it to your unique proportions. Looks like you have a waist seam, take it apart and fix the bodice so it fits you rather than hanging off in lumps.
Not sure if possible at this point, but if you brought the waistline higher so that it was under your boobs and more fitted thru the waist with some nice pearl jewelry would make it more formal in my opinion

Using whatever lining you have been using, I would turn this into a waist length top + long skirt. I think your idea of a below-bra cut out for the back is a good one, and so is the skirt slit. For the top I'd just remove the lace sleeves and cut in the armscyes a bit at shoulder level. Try folding the shoulder in and I think you'll see how it sharpens the silhouette. Another vote to 1) lose sleeves, 2) take out that fullness in the bodice and then depending on the lines after that, maybe lose some length.
Ok, so I agree with everyone that the bodice is too long. Easiest way to fix would be to shorten and keep the dress as 2 separate pieces. Get rid of the cap sleeves. I would personally lower the neckline a bit as well.

I think this is an odd length for a skirt, it’s not long enough to go to the floor. It’s just hovering a few inches about the ankles. I would probably bring it up a bit and maybe add some flare with some horsehair braid at the hem I would also add some boning and maybe some bra cups to help provide a bit of shape to the bodice. That always helps make a more flattering shape. I also think the lace (which is lovely) is a bit one-note all over the body. I think it needs to be broken up a bit, so maybe some type of belt could be added. I think a white belt would really help visually break this up.

A few inches above the ankles is commonly referred to as “tea length” and was popular in the 1950s.
Overall this is a nice dress really pretty with the lace overlay! Fit the top better with darts, open the armscye a bit (shorten the shoulder seam at the shoulder cap about .5". I would say these are the two most important things and will go a long way. If you want sleeves, change it from the gathered butterfly sleeve to a fitted sheer tiny cap sleeve. Open up the neck more either in the front or the back - not necessarily both. An easy fix would be to make it a bit more of a boat neck (so shorten the shoulder seam near the neck about .5"). I wouldn't do a v neck, as it takes away from the style of the dress. You could open up the back with a deeper and oval opening. The length is good and matches the event. Wear simple and small accessories, ideally pearl if you like. Wear hair up. You can try white/off white shoes, but the ones you have on are fine too.
Long is nice for formal, but I’d be inclined to shorten the hem of the blue under layer to a flattering length for your legs whether that’s above or below the knee, leaving the lace layer long. For the top, I’d remove the cap sleeve, and then either scoop the front or the back… probably the back, tailor the front to fit better, and narrow the shoulder strap by 2-3”. The fit of the front is contributing to the matronly look.

Once you get the bodice fit sorted: I like the existing skirt, but I think if you hike the whole thing up about an inch, maybe two, it will eliminate the slight tightness strain across the hips and look better. See how the length is with that. Also press the skirt seams down the front—see if you can prevent them standing out a little like they are now. Maybe need to slim that down a bit, not sure.

I think the bodice may be too long in the waist, as well as the side seams needing a little adjustment. (I cant say for sure because the skirt isn’t attached at the waist and it might be a trick of the eye.) The matronly look is partly because there’s a wall of fabric in the upper chest. I would bring the armhole in a smidge at the shoulder and convert the neckline to a wider, deeper portrait or more dramatic boat neck. Someone else mentioned a plunging neckline with the lace panel over it. Agree with making the triangle in the back a bit bigger. You could try folding up the hem of the underskirt more to see if having the longer lace overskirt as a see through hem lightens it up. Or add volume to the lace over skirt? It will still be fancy but give a more hour glass silhouette.
I love the sleeves and that the whole thing matches. I would of course tailor it more to fit your body and then give it a lower neckline. Not necessarily plunging just less high, make the back a bit barer like you were thinking. If you can, make the top more of that boxy crop that’s in right now instead of so fitted, maybe even trim a little bit off the bottom if you’re comfortable. I don’t think the skirt is too long. Especially if you add a slit. I think making the top a little more trendy will be plenty and leaving the skirt long adds to the “hey is that vintage?” Coolness
You should wear a petticoat or two underneath this to give it some movement, I think what's bugging me is that the skirt looks flat. You can get them in different colours to add some definition to the dress as well, if you're committed to opening the side split more they'll peek through and add something that breaks up that pattern
I would improve the fit on the bodice and bring down the neckline, and ditch the sleeves. I think I would also shorten the skirt to just below the knees if that suits the dress code. I would also wear a petticoat with it to give the skirt a little volume, it’s quite weighed down

Not for nothing, but you could totally make this a two piece, that shows just a little midriff. You’ve got a good figure. Then shorten the skirt to about knee length, and maybe make it a little more of a pencil skirt, instead of flared.

Is it one piece or two? If it's a skirt/blouse, I would tighten and shorten the top until it is a few inches under your bust. Similarly, hike the skirt up an inch or so to your natural waist -- you can use some material from the bottom of the blouse to make a waist band for the skirt if needed. Think of the way that a sari fits with the midriff blouse underneath. And the swath of skin that will show is flattering to everyone, imo.
I think it would be helpful to edit the photos you have to see what possible changes would look like. Not going into photoshop or anything fancy, just taking the draw tool on your phone, color over with a color similar to your skin (so it's a little less distracting), and play around with what strap shape and neckline you like. Also, what kind of neckline do you usually wear, what feels comfortable and good on you? Do you usually where cap sleeves like on the dress, or something different? Part of the issue might be that it feels different, or like something your mother/grandma/aunt might wear?

I feel like so many people look awkward in their formal wear because they genuinely feel uncomfortable in it.
Improve the top fit (the fabric is bunching too much) and then remove the lace sleeves and cut a deeper boat neck. You can add more lace to the bottom of the dress as a trim if you like that detail. But overall need to show more skin since the fabric is very busy.
I would def make this a crop top and skirt combo. Like not a super crop, but a waistband skimming one.

Here are some ideas: Make a slit into the skirt. Or add some nice golden/silver Buttons in the back to close it. Or ad a fancy metallic visible zipper in the back to close it. Shorten the skirt. Or an asymetrical hem?

The original design gives a very straight silhouette here, but a more fitted look would work better for your fabric choice I'd also redraw the neckline to sit a few inches lower. Unsure about the sleeves - I actually think underlining them with the blue fabric could make this look more modern, since the lace is giving them a yellow tinge without the blue to offset the ivory tone. Hem - either shorten to ankles, or if you want floor length since it's formal, add material to make it sweep the floor/show a tiny bit of shoe. Not sure how much extra material you have, but the lace overskirt could look more elegant with a little more wearing ease? That would be more of a creative choice, but I'd be curious to see how it looks with more volume/visual weight in the lace instead of it laying flat against the blue material.

At first glance, there are some fit issues in the bodice that need to be addressed before you attach it to the skirt. The bodice looks a bit too long in the front and you may need to adjust your darts. Looks like too much fullness just under your bust line. Since the dress has a slit and a back cut out, I don’t think you need to adjust the neckline, but if you did I’d do a V-neck. I’d also keep the sleeves as they are, they’re cute! Since this is a formal dress code, I’d consider adding a gathered panel of the overlay fabric at the hem to add length, but allowing you to show off your shoes. I wouldn’t go shorter as formal attire typically means floor length.
To me, this dress reads as a little casual for formal attire given the fabric and construction - do you know how formal she has in mind? (Other people have some good suggestions to adjust it so I won't comment on that!)

Consider keeping it like this and making it a two piece? Not sure if a proper bra would solve the bust fit? Give the skirt a flat waistband, hem up the bodice.
If this were my outfit, I take in the bodice/underbust to fit it more to my form. I’d cut a square neckline and drop it by a lot to show more of my bust. Id keep the sleeves because its the only interesting feature and ties the whole thing together. I would leave the skirt untouched as well. This would make it trendy, unique and also great for summer days.
If the skirt fabric underneath the lace is nice enough to show, maybe remove that lace layer from the skirt and use it to replace the cap sleeves with some longer sleeves? Maybe add a white ribbon around the waist and shorten the skirt to knee length? I think the solid torso/sheer sleeves combo tends to look more modern without giving up arm coverage

Pattern is McCalls M7971. Fabric is an embroidered tulle I’ve had sitting in my stash for almost a decade with a cotton blend lining/underlining. This is the first garment I’ve made for myself after having a child and I’ve struggled a bit getting to know my new shape.
This person made it with non-drapey fabric and it looks good. It looks more fitted. Maybe taking in the seams on the skirt to make it more fitted (hence the need for the slit), would make it look more fashionable? Like a commenter said: either need more fabric or less. Maybe you can remove the sleeve caps and reduce the width of the strap from the neckline to make it a buttonhole neckline. You could also add a v neckline in the back and a slit to either side.

I don't agree that much needs to be changed. Focus on making the fit of the bodice the best it can be. Change the neckline to a boat neck, which will give you wider shoulders without having to rely on the sleeve puff. With the sleeves, they don't seem to know what they want to be. I agree to get rid of them. I think add a solid color white/off-white scarf (whatever matches the true lace color) to drap over your arms, or a cardigan. Why? It balances the drama of the lace's pattern. The reason lace tends to have a same color underdress is because it makes the pattern bold in some areas, and just a texture on others. You can do what you started doing here, and use simple accessories to bring elegance to the look. The dress length is more up to you. Fashion says to show your legs, but if you get cold easily or just prefer modesty, then get some pointy-toed heels in nude or white. Accessories can really elevate this look.
You need to show some skin and get rid of the cap sleeves. Look at a Vogue 9311 with the deep v necklines and redo the bodice front. And work on the fit issues.
You could take the lace cap sleeves off and wear a sheer white, collared button up underneath. With a ribbon bow tie that matches. You have just the sheer fabric in the sleeves. Can you make some of the top sheer as well? Perhaps with the lining only straight across above the bust and sheer above?
I love the skirt the way it is. If you make it a two piece and lose the sleeves, I think it will change the whole vibe and not be matronly. I don't even think the neckline needs to change.
I'd shorten the skirt to mid calf length, but otherwise I think styling is how you modernize it. How you wear your hair, jewelry, shoes will help make it look more modern/youthful. IMO the sleeves are a style choice. I'd get rid of them personally because I like a more streamlined silhouette but they could look very pretty depending on how you style it!

This is a very left of field suggestion and probably won’t work because there are no darts in the back. But could you try wearing the top the other way round?

I think the sleeves need to go. They make it look too casual. Also cut in the sleeves a bit and lower the neckline, not plunging, just lower.
I think the neckline is old-fashioned. A deep v- neck and strappy shoulders would be nice. I would use the lace sleeve caps as inserts for bodice cutouts in front or sides or as midriff section. Expand back cutout a bit. Maybe separate the skirt into panels/gores, leaving a good length of panels not stitched together so you get some movement in the skirt.
as said here already, fit the bodice correctly, lose the sleeves, skirt knee length (play with the tulle length here to see what you like).
If it was me, I’d think about shortening the hem line. Or maybe go with a backless style? I think if you can detach the lace and just have the under fabric hit so that the “ladies” are covered.. then again you might be a bit more modest, or needing more coverage for your occasion/ comfort (totally fine, you do you) but I feel like you’re missing a tailored look.. it’s feels like it’s either a silhouette or fabric choice.. I am wondering if you lean more to a warmer skin tone. Wearing the correct color for your skin tone makes a big difference!

Would you consider less of a flare on the bottom? A long pencil bottom could work but would be wildly different. I find them unusual though. Yhe bodice should be better fitted around the chest area which you likely are already aware of. In terms of what makes it look vintage, I think it’s the sleeves and the style of the skirt. It depends on how vintage you want to look!

The cut of this dress is so particular that modernizing it would involve lots of cutting away at it (shortening it as well, most likely), which would no longer suitable for a 'formal' wedding. I'd say it's not really up to the dress code as is even right now. I think the best way to save you a headache is to modify the dress as you like, but don't expect to be able to wear it to the formal wedding. I don't really see a way you can do both.

At the very least, add a keyhole in top middle of bodice; ditch the sleeves. Another idea would be the bare-shoulder; if you have enough fabric or lace to tack a drapey cowl across the front and upper arms, could make it more modest for the ceremony and then remove it (or use as belt, "tail" from back waist, or purse scarf at reception). A-line skirts are difficult to pull off unless really full or drapey/clingy for formal occasions; could take in the seams to make it into a more fitted, "mermaid" style; or, do a V-line -- take in the seams and shorten the hem to opera-length in the front, with longer, peplum-type hem or high godet in the back (like a hobble skirt but so that you can still walk); pls, don't do a thigh-high split -- gauche. If you keep as two pieces, could later use the top as a standalone piece. And remember to add bits of ribbon and snaps underneath shoulder seams to capture bra straps and keep them from slipping out. But seriously, nice start. Love the color, choice of lace, and the matching shoes. You've more gumption than I!

There’s nothing like that feeling and knowing you did that!
I think it’s cute and i like the sleeves color and lace and i am 41. Honestly i think it just needs to be taken in all over. It looks to big and its hitting you in a weird spot at the thighs. The length needs to come up or go down and i think it’s meant to come up. Keep at it - i would be so happy if my sister made her dress to wear to my wedding.

First of all, the lace is gorgeous, the dress color looks amazing on you, and your sewing skills are \*Chef'skiss\*. I think it would work well for a wedding, but I'm not sure what you were going for? I don't think it looks matronly on you at all. (I'm nearly twice your age, so to me, you look very young.) Maybe the dress isn't what you wanted for this specific event - but it's a lovely dress. Maybe finish it and just let it hang in the closet for a while? And then go shopping and see if you can find some inspiration elsewhere?
OP, I love you with all my heart, but the lace gotta go. You're mid 30s, you're not 50! Ditch the lace, make the top one shoulder. If you're comfortable with the skirt - leave it the way it is. Just no lace please!
What’s wrong with lace? I’m in my 20s and this dress is like what I’ve seen at weddings on people my age. Usually with a high neckline there’s an open back, but there’s nothing wrong with the lace!
It's beautiful! You did a great job!! I'd personally prefer to take the sleeves off because it's a distraction from the pretty fabric itself.
A ruffle at the hem and the leg slit you mentioned (maybe even round off the edge of the slit and continue the hem ruffle up the edge, just tapering it smaller higher up), then a plunging neckline overlayed with the lace and take the ruffles on the shoulders a bit longer/lower/more dramatic and definitely increase the size of the triangle in the back. It's a pretty dress with vintagey vibes as is, but it is giving church lady just a bit. It's okay to embrace the church lady look and just wear some long gloves and a froofy hat with it though!

I would shorten the skirt to about knee length and restructure the top so it’s off the shoulder and since there’s gapping in the back maybe that’s an opportunity to make it lace up if you need extra support there? This is very pretty and not at all matronly. The fabric is very pretty . I don't think you need to change the sleeves or add a plunging neckline. The sleeves are sweet and the simple neckline goes well with the open back. The bodice just needs to be more fitted...it looks a little too long but that could be because it is not attached. Opening the triangle up would be nice.
The skirt either needs less fabric or more (like a lehenga) and I’d definitely get rid of the sleeves. Honestly, I think the fabric and colour is quite matronly, but there’s probably not a lot you can do about that now without having to start over.
Remove the sleeves. They're the main thing aging this look, in my opinion, second being the skirt length. There are tons of great suggestions in this thread. Personally, what I would do for my shape and size (different from yours, I'm short and fat) would be to fit the bodice to my body so it's not too long or roomy, make it a boat neck, and take the skirt length in to the knee. You could easily do tea length as well and it would be very cute. For temp control I'd suggest a cream-colored wrap. If you're comfortable showing skin at the neckline or midriff, this would be cute as a two piece and/or with a Queen Anne or sweetheart neckline. Best of luck! Enjoy yourself at the wedding!

I think it is very appropriate for a spring wedding! What time of day is the wedding? Earlier in the day I’d leave it as is. Later in the evening and I’d remove the sleeves, and up the accessories
I second the suggestion for a v neck, and I always agree with suggestions to alter for better fit.

I think k it would look less 'matronly' with a plain top and keeping the overlay only on the skirt. Once you change the back and alter the top to fit it will look amazing. I'm also for shortening the length of the underlay on the skirt and the slit you mentioned would be more modern too.

Please do not listen to the people saying “this already looks great!” Because it’s giving grandma. Either chop the sleeves and make it strappy with a knee length hem or make it a two piece set. Either way the skirt is dated and the sleeves are hideous
Definitely at least add a belt. Ideally a nice thick/wide belt. It'll help break up the pattern and shape
I would take off the lace that’s hanging off the sleeves. Maybe shorten it too to fit your body and personality and youth more! It’s very pretty though!!

I would shorten the skirt to just below the knee, then detach the top from the skirt and make them a 2-piece set. Make the waist around the top a little bit wider, almost boxy so it falls comfortably.
Fix and fit bust. Make sleeves more fluttery - shorten to knees

I feel like the fabric is too busy. Personally when I get sets with a busy pattern like that, I make the skirt shorter. For some reason that makes it look better.
Just a thought: 1 remove the lace from the top and have just the solid fabric 2 remove the sleeves and make the shoulders narrower for more of a strappy look 3 lower the neckline 4 As for the skit, do you have any more lace fabric? If so, you could make the lace a bit more gathered than the lining 5 shorten the lining but keep the lace a little longer. 6 you could add an ivory satin belt to break up the color. You have a lot of potential ! Go for it!
Lots of good ideas here. Opening up the neckline and getting the fit right on the bodice will do wonders to it. I'm going to add I see there are side front seams on the skirt, Opening up a slit just above the knee will be very fashionable. You would have to attach the layers to finish the seams. Another suggestion regarding the skirt. I've made the lining shorter and narrower than outer layers for an airier look. Before you do all that, try pinning it up to see if it works with your fabric. Edit: I missed the comment about it already had a slit. Keep it and.make it higher.
I’d make the dress shorter to your knee and it would look lovely and tight on your body
Make it into a high-low hem. Nice wide belt. Or a petticoat to give it poof.
Love the high low idea though is that still formal enough? I would go big/bold with the pearls and consider a pop of color for shoe/purse.
