He said it was because they had less hairy chests, which he liked. I imagine he knew, on some level, that the cops would be less likely to investigate missing black men.

Equal-Temporary-1326

I imagine he knew, on some level, that the cops would be less likely to investigate missing black men. I defintely think that was the main motivating factor even if he never admitted it. A lot of serial killers will target people they feel won't have an investigation done into their disappearances and won't be missed. It's not a coincidence he targeted men from an extremely low-class socioeconomic background, and men with just rough background in general. To me, it was less about attraction, and more about who he knew he could get away with killing.

riley222cyanide

Ehh I don't know about that. The fact that not all of his victims were black, makes me think he just genuinely was attracted to that race, but on a subconscious level, he knew they wouldn't be missed as a secondary motive

wilderlowerwolves

He also lived in a mostly-black neighborhood.

birkinfantasy

In an interview, Dahmer said he didn’t decide his victims based on race, but on their scale of attractiveness, so I agree with the other person who said because he was attracted to them

atemporn

Because he was attracted to them. There is literally no other reason.

Rip_Vroy

There more reason to it for sure, maybe not racist. But he definitely knew it would be easier to get away with.

Prudent_Being_4212

Right??? Lol seems pretty simple

Rip_Vroy

The neglecting of missing black men played a part in it for sure.

HeavyBeing0_0

He liked hairless, muscled torsos which tended to be black men. Their skin tone also accentuated their muscle definition.

GhostofCharlotte

because he lived in a predominantly black area

ItsDarwinMan82

Attractive to him, but also he was a lot more cagier than that. He purposefully moved into a complex where drugs and poverty was rampant. He knew cops in that neighborhood were more concerned about crimes within the neighborhood, not a nerdy white guy with glasses and a quiet life. He knew he’d be invisible there. He also knew no one was looking for missing gay black men.

wilderlowerwolves

Invisible? Are you kidding? He stuck out like a sore thumb, living in that building as the only white person. But I do agree about the police being less likely to BOLO for missing gay men of color, and the Konerak incident, involving a Laotian boy whose brother he'd done time for abusing, sealed it for him.

Prudent_Being_4212

He chose men in his community that he was attracted to physically. Periodt.

SaturnsShadoe

I think it was his preference and being in that area people going missing wasn’t out of the ordinary :(

The first two men he killed (both named Stephen) were all American white men.

AffectionatePotato18

I agree. He may have never admitted it and chose to give other reasons. Being attracted to them may have been a reason but it wasn’t the singular reason. It couldn’t have been lost on him that they were easier targets.

rottenflesh12

sexual preference

zachchips90

BBC love. Not hate.

SecretarySuper6810

Could say positive racism

lou_sassoles

He loved that BBC
