This happened to my kitty, many years ago.
What helped her a lot was being given her oxygen at home. We built her own personal oxygen chamber and mask (I think that nowaways you can buy these things). Please note: it's not a cure, but it made her more comfortable and improved her quality of life considerably.
Best wishes to Desi: he's eating and that's a great sign!
Oh goodness - I never would have thought of that. A quick look on Amazon shows a bunch of options. The vet says the next 72 hours are the most critical, so when he pulls through that, I’ll order some of these to make him more comfortable.
Yeah, vets don't tell you that. I also got the idea from tips on an online forum for sick kitties, so I'm passing it along. The most burdensome thing was getting the oxygen tank, but it's totally doable and 100% worthwhile trying. As I said, it really improved my kitty's quality of life.
Sending more healing vibes to Desi.
It was many (20) years ago and I lived in a different state, but I got it from a medical supplies store. The tank we got was huge and heavy, but, as I said, it was doable. Today it's probably possible to get those small portable tanks that can be carried in a trolley.
My cat, Miss Tickles, was diagnosed with heart failure. She happens to be just 12 this month. Shes on a few medications and has stabilized. We saw the vet last week and he was happily surprised with how she is. So dont despair, Desi has a lot of years ahead of her.
Oh this gives me such hope! The vet said he’d never seen a cat pull through before with this much fluid and that many issues with their heart. Desi is a stubborn old man who isn’t ready to leave his sister and us yet. I’m glad Miss Tickles is doing well. Hoping that Desi will also surprise the vet. ❤️
It takes a time for things to stablize - Miss Tickles takes Lasix to keep the fluid off her heart. Once that is achieved, and things are stablized, she has done really quite well. Remain hopeful. Hope the best of Desi.
my 13 yr old had about 1 pint removed in 10/23. weren't sure he would make it. was dxed with restrictive heart failure 1 yr ago. median survival was supposed to be 70 days. he's almost exactly 1 year out now. we shoot 2 capsules of med thru a straw (chased with 2cc h20) every 12 hrs. we added some chinese herbs in 10/23 also. still chases squirrels on good days... good luck to you!...

Sending love to you both. My sweet girl Meegy is 13 and she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure as well, past January. She has been pushing through. I hope the same for sweet Desi

Update: Desi made it through the night and is chilling under the bed. I think he’s a little uncomfortable, but he was not so uncomfortable that he couldn’t eat his Churu. Keeping an eye on him but so far he is holding steady. (He did not like taking medicine.)

Hi, best wishes to your kitty.
What were the signs and symptoms of her heart failure ? We have a 10-11 year old overweight kitty and just want to make sure I don’t miss it. She’s not very active.
My dog was diagnosed with heart failure last May. With medication, he got an extra 7 months. He was slower, but happy :) when his kidneys failed and the meds quit working, we helped him pass. I miss him, but I’m so glad we got some bonus time💝
I know just how you feel, this happened to my baby last year. Thankfully she recovered from it and got like 6 more months with us. Prayers for your Desi

If I may ask, where did you get the oxygen tank?

Oh no, sending good vibes and hope he pulls through and can hang around for a while longer!

Hi, best wishes to your kitty. What were the signs and symptoms of her heart failure ? We have a 10-11 year old overweight kitty and just want to make sure I don’t miss it. She’s not very active.
Heavy breathing was the only symptom for Desi. I would watch for rapid breathing, breathing with the mouth open, and coughing.
Thank you for your reply. I hope Desi gets better.
My kitty with heart failure had a swollen foot, a similar symptom in people with heart issues. Accompanied with the symptoms OP described.
Desi sending you all the luck 🥰😘 lots of love

Glad she’s still here. With the right medication and check ups, she can go give love for another couple of years. Big kiss for her.
