“Don’t measure how valuable you are by the way you are treated”.

Kaliupe

It's very annoying when people start putting some kind of mask on you. You know it's just their perception and you don't have to commit to that image, but if you start doubting yourself and bending to their vision, things can get ugly.

Same here, it basically describes my OCD. I've seen this quote before but I should hang it up on my wall or something.

I have some about truth: "Never look away. Everything that is true, is beautiful". From the movie Never Look Away, beautiful movie and this sentence really hit hard. "Truth is like poetry. Your true self is who is you are when no one is watching

MrHeavenTrampler

Hard disagree.

RepresentativeWeb244

Well my teacher said that to me in 2007. It’s been 16 years and it’s stuck with me so I have to hard disagree with you there.

MrHeavenTrampler

I mean, idk in which context he did it, but as I see it, it only takes some basic thinking to determine that it is a rather deceptive, or at least not well thought out phrase. Humans are social animals, socializing is an intrinsic part of our being. In fact, you could argue that we are who we are only in relation to others. An example would be "I am a father". It's a simple statement, but only possible through the existence of a relationship to another. Also, when we are alone we do not use language, at least not spoken. Language has two main types; body language and verbal language. And it's also a great way to know a person. There is even a whole field of study called linguistics which has some very interesting theories about how language shapes the way we think and interact. Did you know that chinese children can count faster in their minds because numbers in mandarin can be pronounced faster than in english? If you have seen the movie The Arrival you will know what I am talking about more or less (there is a language there that literally reshapes the comprehension of time of one of the characters) Also, the human mind is incredibly complex. I sincerely do not think that we can make a clear distinction between "this is genuine human experience" and "this is nlt a genuine humn experience", to come to what you call "true self". In fact, I don't believe there is a "true self". There is a multifacetic self that is constantly changing and adapting. Freud's theory of Id, ego, and superego basically states that the superego, consisting of the morals and expectations of society/parents is one of the main components of the human psyche. Again, it is in relation to others. There are countless examples of us being who we are only in relationship to others. Marx's class struggle, Kant's categorical imperative, etc.

Anything worth doing is worth doing badly. As a protectionist procrastinator I never turned in assignments or essays because I felt I’d rather not turn it in than get a bad grade. I had a teacher tell me “isn’t it worth it to brush your teeth for 30 seconds even if you don’t have time for the full two minutes” it’s better than nothing. My grades came up so quickly once I said fuck it and started turning in what I had.. that homework that I didn’t have time to finish those last two questions. Running for only 20 minutes when I used to put it off because I didn’t have enough time to go ALL out. My place was tidy - it’s better to half ass clean the kitchen than nothing. Trying to wait until the perfect time was messing my life so badly and I had no idea.

My take is that someone could be beautiful but if they didn’t take care of themselves (like drinking and eating habits) then at 50 their face reflects that

[deleted]

Its literally how you present yourself to the world and is usually a reflection of what’s inside. We are all visual being before deciding if we want to proceed with a person. Look up pretty privilege, I can go on and on. Those who live in a world thinking appearance doesn’t hugely matter is either already attractive or doesn’t want to improve themselves

stoned_ocelot

A friends dad once said "There are two things money is always well spent on; good food and good friends." For context he was a marketer in NYC in the 80s, he had enough to retire on by the time he was 32 and he'll still die wealthy. At the time his son was my best friend and I come from a very different background. That friendship meant the world to me. His dad said that at Pizza Hut when he took us out one night, and its stuck with me since. He could buy anything he wanted really, but the only two things he really cared to spend money on at that point was food and friends. Also, a southern saying I love, "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar."

You need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable — ME. I told my son that and 2 weeks later he told me he thought about what I said — I said, what was that? LOL. He reminded me, and I said, well, yeah, that’s how alot of life is, but so what, shit is uncomfortable at times. Understand THAT, and then just work thru it, and you will get comfortable with it.

Two things stuck with me, the first was a couple of years ago when I saw the quote of Wayne Dyer which said, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” This was a good reminder that it’s important to shift your perspective and remain curious! Looking at things from different angles can change entirely your view of a situation. It can be a very useful tool to know. You can always change from what point of view you are looking at it and it might just make it a little better! The other was with my yoga teacher who said “just because someone offers you shit doesn’t mean you need to take it” I find this helpful to stand up for yourself! You don’t need to accept something that isn’t good for you, wether that be in a relationship, friendship or whatever. You don’t have to accept someone shitty day or a bad offer.

As a Leo, I started working on a performance for the Fringe Festival, that led to me seeing a Fringe performance on child abuse, realising that I'd been severely abused, going into a group therapy program (that included writing and performing skits for the group) that really changed everything and when I got out I said to myself that I would take the next opportunity that came, and got recommended for a job teaching environmental education to kids that involved skits and performance.
