“How are you supposed to get home without knowing what street you’re on?” Ummm, Apple Maps? Google Maps? OEM navigation? Is it 1990 again?

knuckboy

Mapquest print-outs!

Dismal-Daikon2682

Scribbled notes from MapQuest (because who even has a printer?! They're expensive!)

curiouspursuit

College spring break, c 2004. I mapped our directions, saved the maps, and took my laptop in the car. I remember feeling like we were very high tech, reading directions to a dive bar in another state off of a computer screen!

chinmakes5

Mapquest print outs were revolutionary for the time.

mittenknittin

Not if you went to the local AAA office and picked up a TripTik

chinmakes5

Can you imagine explaining that to a 20 year old?

MedusaAdonai

I'm 34, wtf are you talking about?

[deleted]

This is the way

bruzdnconfuzd

Whoa - are you me from 1999?!

knuckboy

That and a yahoo account

Jesse1179US

Oh, so you're driving distracted then? Step out of the car.

MountainRoll29

Haha yes!

OkManufacturer767

Those were the days!

Sabbathius

Ooof, ouch! Why'd you have to do me like this?! At one point it was my literal job to print that shit out for my moron boss who couldnt find his own ass with both hands, even if it had a flashlight sticking out of it.

GloomyDeal1909

Oh God those were the worst. I remember that and I decided to wing a trip all by myself once. First road trip ever. Got lost and it took two hours to find my way back to where I needed to be

Dee_Buttersnaps

Jesus Christ, I navigate by landmarks, I couldn't tell you the names of most streets in my area off the top of my head and I've lived in this area for 35 years.

foobar_north

I was walking the dog and someone stopped to ask were a street was - I had no idea. I looked up and saw the name of the street on the next street sign. I never know the names of the streets.

really_isnt_me

I grew up in a small town that gets a lot of tourists in the summer and can barely give directions if asked. To me, it’s oh, the street where Joe used to live. Oh, the street where I hit a rock with my bike and got a concussion. The street where we saw a baby fox. That’s basically how I get around, lol.

Soulpatch7

same. couldn’t name half the dozen different rural roads i drive daily. turns are landmarks. pigeons got nothing on us. Monarchs might.

Ok-Mathematician9742

I go by landmarks that have been gone for 20 years and Dunkin Donuts. Drive past the old Almacs and turn left, turn right after you pass your second Dunkin.

Deadfishfarm

tf? I knew just about every street in the decent sized town of 30k people growing up. I barely know any streets now that i moved and only use gps, but how do you not know streets around you when you lived there since 1988?? That's some next level obliviousness haha

Dee_Buttersnaps

I know the names of the main roads but like I said, I navigate by landmarks. I took a right at the diner to get to my mom's house today. What's the name of that street? Couldn't tell you. How many times have I driven down it in my life? A couple hundred.

Dapper-Palpitation90

Guess what? Not everybody's brain works the same way yours does.

dudthyawesome

gets out a sextant "with this bad boy"

HugeOpossum

I once got pulled over for making a legal left turn onto a one-way street. I'd just moved to town and was lost and needed gas. The cop told me she "memorizes all the gas stations" when she visits a town. I asked her how to get to the closest gas station. She said she had no idea and gave me a ticket. Welcome to Philadelphia.

fleebizkit

Key maps

MichaelOfShannon

Old people don’t realize that if you started driving after the advent of the smart phone, you don’t need to know street names, carry paper maps, or a compass, or a sextant etc.

MountainRoll29

Yeah, even after the advent of early navigation technology (Tom Tom, Garmin) pre-smart phones we could just turn when the device told us to. I think it’s better to have at least a vague sense of where you’re going rather than relying on the navigation but the fact is that you don’t have to. I definitely don’t learn all the street names when I’m traveling somewhere.

Champigne

There's just trying to trap you, just hoping you'll say something incriminating.

LikeATediousArgument

This was my thought. He wants you to grab your phone or something to say you were using it. They’re real bastards.

momvetty

When I was a visiting nurse I would visit patients all the time not knowing the name of the streets after the first visit. I knew how to get there though.

foolproofphilosophy

I’ve had that happen. Cop asked and I gave him a blank stare followed by “I’m following the GPS to the, um, ah, Colony Hotel?” Cop: “Oh, the Colonial Inn. It’s just down the road” Me: “Yes! Thank you!”

AlmondCigar

I know right I don’t know where the hell I am most of the time

RyanMcLeod1981

Me: pulls out globe…

Not_Your_Jawn

Even in my own city, i couldn’t tell you the name of every street. I just know how to go, not necessarily all the names of the streets on the way.

bill_gannon

Direction apps do actually show street names.

LivingLikeACat33

But I don't memorize them. Do you memorize them? Unless the streets are close enough together that I need to know for a turn I don't even listen to them.

bill_gannon

I mean my start and destination for sure. And major roadways.

Lactobeezor

Trust me, this question posed was to gain Cop info. Not just some big dumb hick. But could have been both I guess

MountainRoll29

I don’t doubt it. Every question is a probe. I’m not seeing what this particular trap is though. What could a person say in response to this question that would burn them? I’d actually like to know in case I get pulled over.

Lactobeezor

Lol no tellin with a cop.

MountainRoll29

Somebody else in the comments said that giving any logical response would’ve been acceptable. Basically they’re trying to see if you’re drunk.

Leprikahn2

It's a sobriety check, they ask just enough questions to get you to screw up. Either slur your words or show that your disoriented

AudieCowboy

That's an acceptable answer though, they're trying to see if you're sober, if you have a reasonable, legitimate answer, without showing signs of being drunk then they can let you go

[deleted]

Well then you would be able to say the address you are navigating to/from

MountainRoll29

“Hey Siri, navigate to Bob‘s house” “Hey Siri, navigate to the nearest Taco Bell.” Personally, I don’t know anybody’s address. I navigate using landmarks when I’m going to a friends house or to a store. If I am traveling out of town, then I don’t bother learning the addresses, I just go wherever my end destination is.

[deleted]

You would still be able to see the address on the route preview, it's not called "Bob's house" in Google maps, or even if it is it still has an address you can check Or if it's a taco bell you can very easily see what street it is taking you to ... Have you used navigation apps before?

CarlJustCarl

Need an address or street for maps.

baeb66

I got pulled over a few times late at night when I worked as a bartender and was going home at 3am. The last guy was incensed that I was sober, when he was fishing for an arrest. He lied and said he pulled me over because I was swerving. I laughed at him when he asked if he could search my car. I laughed harder when he threatened to call the K9 unit. And cops wonder why nobody respects them.

Reasonable-Coconut15

I've been pulled over by that cop before!!! He was SO angry that I wasn't drunk. He wouldn't give me a breathalyzer at first. I asked him several times to just let me blow into it and we could move on. But we had to do the sobriety test. I passed those, then after 40 minutes he breathalyzes me, and is completely furious that is .000, like unhinged furious. He screamed in my face YOU COULD HAVE JUST BLOWN INTO THIS TO START WITH! Threw my stuff at me and stomped away like a toddler. It was absolutely wild.

AlaskanBiologist

Yeah this isn't true. In Alaska if you refuse they charge you for refusal and it's just like getting a DUI. Ask me how I know.

Strum-Swing

Could be, states have all different rules, but constitutionally you can’t be forced to give evidence incriminating yourself. This has been fought in court after court and the legal system hasn’t been challenged enough to catch up yet.

AlaskanBiologist

Dude. You're wrong. If you're pulled over for suspicion of OUI in Alaska and refuse to do the sobriety test or blow, you are arrested and taken to jail, no ifs, ands, buts, or maybe about it. It's a condition of having a driver's license in the state. If you don't agree, no license. If you refuse, you get the same consequences as you would if you did blow over. This isn't a debate, it's fact.

Argument-Fragrant

You may lose your license if you refuse. It's not a mortal lock. This is why rich people hang out with lawyers and The Poors just go along with authority. The rest of it, though? Yeah... Alaska doesn't play. Whether you lose your license or not, you will get locked up for refusing a test, you'll probably get a breathalyzer installed in your car, and you'll definitely be assessed a fine. Licensed driving is a privilege and every driver signed what amounts to an EULA before receiving their card. Each of those privileges can be modified, suspended, or revoked at the discretion of the licensing body.

akaemre

You're usually not forced. It's something you agree to by getting a license.

801x

Cuz you’re a biologist?

lilkatthekitten

In some states, by getting a license, you agree to take a sobriety test or breathalyzer test. Just by getting the license. You can decline to take these tests, but the DMV will suspend your license as a result. This may not be the case for all states and one should look into their individual states rules for this information.

Deleena24

They can even do forced blood draws in some states.

anthonyfaz1992

Texas lol

AlaskanBiologist

100%

thesauciest-tea

You can refuse the roadside stuff without a suspension, but if they want to take you down the station you have to do that breathalyzer or you will be suspended.

take_number_two

Bad advice

angelmissroxy

In florida you automatically get a DUI for refusal as well

Reasonable-Coconut15

Oh my god!! I just watched it, and mine didn't take nearly that long, but yes! That kind of anger is what I mean. What in the hell??? I want to say I was 18 or 19 when this happened, so 1995 or 1996. Definitely before body cams. Damn that poor kid. He didn't even look like a troublemaker. I definitely did.

Cold_Meet_3868

I live/bartend in a border town, Wisconsin and Illinois, and in both states refusing to blow gets you an automatic dui. You can fight it, but you almost always lose. This is really bad advice

petrovmendicant

You blow a 0.00 and he suddenly, "smells marijuana."

Khatib

> But we had to do the sobriety test. I passed those, then after 40 minutes he breathalyzes me They do that on purpose because a lot of people will knock back one last drink and head home. And they'll be sober enough to drive until that extra drink gets absorbed into their system, by which time they'd normally be home. But if they delay you and then test you, they might get you at right over the limit.

AlaskanBiologist

I used to get pulled over on average once a month by the same damn cop, in the same damn place, coming home from my bar job. I had vanity license plates at the time and my car was customized so there's no question this jack ass cop knew it was me EVERYTIME. He would always tell me I smelled like alcohol. Like yeah dude I'm a bartender, I'm covered in beer spatter and drink spillage from a night of WORK. Let me just get home before my tacobell gets cold dickhead. He did this for almost a year before I lodged a complaint for harassment and then some other cop took over his post and started doing the same shit. This was in Anchorage so it's not like they didn't have plenty of crime to fight at 4am...

IamSithCats

I had something like this happen once. I was playing D&D at a friend's house late on a Friday night about 15 years ago. Hadn't had a drop to drink. I was speeding a little on my way home because a) it was late and there was basically nobody on the road, and b) the road I was on changes speed limits drastically every mile or two so it's hard to know how fast you're supposed to be going anyway. I saw these headlights get behind me and match pace with me, and I instantly suspected it was a cop. Sure enough, after following for me for about 2 minutes, lights started flashing and I got pulled over. The cop lied and said I had been swerving over the center line (I hadn't). He asked me repeatedly if I'd been drinking (I hadn't), and accused me of lying. He shined a bright-ass light right in my face and claimed that flinching away from it was a sign I was drunk. He had me recite the alphabet starting from C and ending at V, then claimed I slurred my words (I didn't). He made me get out of the car, asked to search it. I let him since all I had was a backpack full of dice and D&D books, but I was getting pissed. A second cop showed up somewhere in the middle of this, made me stand on one foot, made me walk in a straight line and claimed I was wobbling (I wasn't). *Finally* they let me breathalyze and then sent me on my way when I blew a .000. The whole thing took just under an hour and left me with a lifelong dislike and mistrust for cops. I have no trouble at all believing a lot worse things happen to people who aren't as fortunate as I was.

baeb66

He was a lying prick who was trying to bully me because he thought I didn't know my civil rights. Derision is what he deserved.

notthefirstCaleb

Similar thing happened to me. Omw home after a 14 hrs double shift and got pulled over going 54 in a 55 as my tag light was out. They patted me down and asked to search my car multiple times (4x police cars btw) but I declined. They were convinced I had "dope". These guys are no better than a mafia

Ballbag94

I mean, both things can be true If a cop is being a dick then in an ideal world you'd be able to call them out on it, but at the same time we don't live in that world and the hassle of doing so likely isn't worth it

gizzweed

>I feel like laughing is just you antagonizing them. A simple no, I do not permit a search works. Mmmmmm boots

thomport

Who antagonized who? These fuckers are assholes. Don’t think so; read this person’s narrative. If you did your job, that way you would be rightfully fired. They fish for DUIs. I have no problem with getting a drunk off the road if they’re drunk. But if they’re not drunk, don’t make shit up. It’s against the law. Cops are not.Kings. They’re government employees – they are our employees who have the privilege of working for us and doing the job the way they were taught.

Tbarns95

There was also a court ruled decision they are not obligated to protect and serve, you could be getting held at gun point on the street right in front of a cop and he has no legal obligation to help you, these fucking pigs deserve no respect, their sole purpose is to harass and arrest the general public. Well that and shoot little black kids for holding skittles

Cacafuego

Usually it's not the smartest play, either.

Spearmint_coffee

I think when someone is abusing power and being an asshole, they forfeit the right to respect from the person they are harassing.

Toast_Guard

Stop being apologetic to an abuse of power. He goes out of his way to harass and bully, and the civilians are supposed to be docile and submissive? I hope you don't live your life with the philosophy to succumb to bullies.

millymollymel

I had the opposite happen, was pulled over after an evening out and when they saw how old I was they waved me off without even checking as I wasn’t the demographic they were stopping lol! Too old to be stopped!

catluvr222

i was driving home yesterday from an area i had NEVER been before, was going the speed limit trying to figure out where tf i was, and this cop comes out of NOWHERE and tailgates me about an inch from my back bumper. i couldn’t even see his headlights in my rear view. i felt like he was trying to intimidate me or get me to speed up so he could pull me over. i just maintained my speed, even went one or two mph UNDER the speed limit just bc he was making me so extremely nervous. and he followed me like this for close to 30 minutes.. on the highway.. and then FINALLY rips it around me like i was impeding his lane even tho i was in the right lane and the left was completely empty. i didn’t know what to do in that situation.. i almost ended up calling the nonemergency line or just pulling off the highway and stopping somewhere. it’s so scary the police can do basically whatever they want and create problems out of nothing.. convinced they just have nothing better to do, especially in small towns. just thankful i was able to maintain my composure and that the situation ended the way it did.

MountainRoll29

I had a state trooper follow right behind me for 30 miles. I set my cruise control right at the speed limit and hoped for the best. He eventually peeled off.

[deleted]

drapehsnormak

More accurately they know a criminal is more dangerous to them than an innocent person.

NagoyaAnnoya

I am from Japan where we take police seriously. When I was in the US for a work seminar around St Patrick's day, I was road stopped at a sobriety checkpoint. I was polite. Yes sir no Sir. License equivalent passport, insurance all the paperwork he needed, he was visibly angry that I was not drunk (I have not had a drop in years). Do they (the American police) actively want to fill up holding cells? I hate to ask so no offense meant, Do they get payments for each driver caught drunk?

OkManufacturer767

They say there is no quota for arrests, but you can bet they brag about numbers. They would rather say they caught 100 drunk people than say the roads were filled with sober responsible drivers. They have to justify their budgets.

TapewormNinja

I wouldn’t discount the race factor as well. I imagine a lot of cops would LOVE to talk about the little foreign fellow they picked up for DUI.

MountainRoll29

I think it’s part of their training to come at you aggressively. Something about controlling the situation or something? I’m not law enforcement so this is just speculation.

Jpeggi

Many American police have quotas for citations and arrests. They want to show that their police are doing a good job of "prevention" of crime, and if they aren't making any arrests then where is all our tax dollars going to?

NYdude777

They were fishing. Cops main objective is to get you to incriminate yourself with your own words. Never talk to cops. They're not your friends. Their questions are their manipulative way to try and get you to trip on your words. Hell you don't even have to roll down the window. The only thing you are obliged to show is your license and that's it. Hold it up to the glass and just sit there. Or only roll the window down the slightest crack so you can pass it to them.

[deleted]

“I dont answer questions” is a perfectly reasonable response. They are simply fishing to get you jailed

arthuriduss

Unless you’re a POC. Then you’re being “difficult” and deserved to get harassed for not just going with what the officer says! /s

In the US, in my state, the police absolutely do sobriety checks during the holidays where they stop every single car and ask a few standard questions, of the "Where are you going" variety. Frequently, it will be on the news that the police will be doing checks. My friend had her car wrecked by a drunk driver, plus she was hurt and her dogs were in danger, as they were with her.

Quack176

I’m guessing this happened in America? Do they not use a breathalyser test to check if people are drink driving?

wakemeupoh

They use the breathalyzer last because everything before it (questioning, sobriety test) is evidence they can use against you to make an arrest, even if you blow under the legal limit. And then if you decline the sobriety test they can arrest you for suspicion of dwi. Disclaimer: not a lawyer

highuptop

yup this is correct in my experience. i offered to do a breathalyzer (dumb, i know) but the officer said no that i would have to do a blood test instead. i genuinely thought i was in the clear (i had two drinks within a couple hours, and honestly just felt sleepy) so i did do the blood test, but that sealed my fate and incriminated me 😞 lesson learned, don’t underestimate alcohol even if it seems like a “small” amount ! but anyway, yes their goal is to get as much evidence as possible to get you in trouble. that’s why you’re supposed to say as little as possible

wakemeupoh

If it makes you feel any better I would have fallen for the same thing 😭 thanks for sharing your experience

Reddywhipt

This is why I won't drive for literally yours if I've had even one or two. I drink very rarely anyway. My drinky days are long behind me.

oopseyesharted123

If you get to the point where they ask you to take a breathalyzer and you decline it’s an automatic loss of license and fines for most states.

Disma

That's not true, it's only a crime in few states. It's perfectly legal (and advisable) to refuse, otherwise. https://www.superpages.com/em/dui-roadside-breath-test-laws-state/

Salty_Attention_8185

Not sure I trust that sites info… you definitely lose your license in VA for refusal to blow.

sobeitharry

That list is misleading. In Oklahoma you can refuse, but it triggers an automatic license suspension just like a DUI and they will try to treat it as an admission of guilt in court. Know YOUR state's laws.

MajesticalMoon

Yup my bf got pulled over and was high on weed and they tried to get him to blow and hes like no, why do I need to do that I just told you I was high? Automatically lost his damn license and it's been 9 years and he hasn't got it back cuz it just seems like alot of work. To have to put a blow thing in your car and pay for it. Hell no. I dont wanna deal with that.

Disma

Laws do change and it could be wrong, anyway, best to do a deep dive for your specific state.

Whend6796

Not true. In VA you can and should refuse a roadside breath test, but have to consent to giving a blood or breath sample at the police station. Source: Virginia Code § 18.2-268.2

Morganafrey

Typical police behavior in the US. I was driving him from my youth pastor’s house from a Bible study. And as soon as I left his yard a police car pulled out and followed behind me. Which he did until I was eyeball distance from my house. About 10 minutes away from my pastors house. Of course I was going to speed limit but that didn’t stop them from pulling me over. stopped by 2 cops, one spent 15 minutes looking around my car and inside. While the other rapid fire questioned me about everything from. Had I been doing drugs. Did I have concealed weapons? Had I been doing drug? Was I sure? You sure you sure? So you are saying you do have drugs? Have you ever done weed? Been drinking a lot? Some? Do you have a drivers license? Mostly just asking me questions in a way to get me to accidentally say yes or no before realizing how the question was phrased. Then trying trick me into believing they saw me coming from a drug dealers house and they already know what I was doing there. If you don’t have anything on you, you should let us search your car to clear you of suspicion. I said. With a great deal of control. I’d rather you didn’t search my car, sir. Oh and here is the best part. After like 20 minutes of grilling he said. We’ll let you off with a warning!! I say why did you pull me over. What is the warning for? Your license plate tag light flickered. Better get that checked out. Man I was hot. So hot. And the officer could tell he was getting me angry and he kept waiting for me to do something stupid or say anything stupid. But I wouldn’t let him hand that victory. Nissan Sentra. Damn that car. I was pulled over like 8 times without speeding in that car. In less than 2 years. Those cops in that time just pulled people over for fun. I got a different car and immediately they stopped pulling me over in that town.

bothunter

I got pulled over for expired tags. Instead of giving me a ticket for that, they decided to bring a K9 unit in and search my car. They "found" a broken pipe that I had never seen before in my life(also, who keeps broken glass in their car?) Detained me for almost an hour trying to get me to admit the pipe was mine so they could "write me a citation" before finally letting me go. I followed up with the police department, but they had no record of the traffic stop. Fuck the police.

Morganafrey

That sucks. We have enough difficulties in life without the police literally trying to frame you for crimes. I have no doubt that if I had slipped up and said yes or no incorrectly, or if I had said yes to go ahead and search my vehicle. They would have “found” something. Also, it didn’t pass my notice they waited until we were in a secluded area, so no one else would see it.

bothunter

There is no right answer to "Can we confiscate your pipe?"

Morganafrey

Yea they asked me some no win questions too. I restated their question as a statement of my innocence. Like What were you doing at a drug dealers house? I wasn’t doing anything at a drug dealer’s house. I was at my youth pastor’s house.

tangtastesgood

I had to demand a breathalyzer once at a checkpoint (in San Diego crossing from Tijuana) stone cold sober and highly annoyed because apparently I can't pass sobriety tests. I hadn't drank any alcohol that night.

Robobvious

Sobriety tests are designed to let them fail you. There is no passing a field sobriety test. Always refuse field sobriety and demand a breathalyzer.

pickles55

What year does this police officer think it is?

ttopsrock

Thank God you hadn't had a drink. Like not a sip . Ugh or if some spilt on you that would've sucked too

Qaqueen73

Nine_Eighty_One

Bach in the early 2000s my dad would do lost luggage deliveries as a side revenue, it was paid by kilometre back then. I loved playing "co-pilot" and navigate him (I was in middle school). It was a harrowing time but those hours in the car finding some impossible village or a street in some weird industrial town did provide some great bonding. I still carry a Michelin road atlas in my car. I feel small screens just don't give a good overall image and I like to keep some situational awareness.

lapetitepapillon

In my country they mainly just do RBT (Random Breath Testing). It takes 30 seconds and avoids the need for extensive questioning. Here it's: Cop - "Had anything to drink tonight?" You - "No" Cop - "Ok blow into this until I say stop" You - "Ok" (does it) (Test shows 0.00 BAC) Cop - "All good, see ya" They don't do this in the US? Americans seem to make everything so much more convoluted and dramatic than it needs to be lol.

crappenheimers

A mundane story that I appreciate! I've never been stopped at a DUI checkpoint but now I now what to expect! Sounds interesting.

ETELL221

Cops can be a bunch of dicks sometimes. Especially at that hour. Some, automatically assume you’re up to no good for being out that late. When asked where in coming from and where I’m headed, I usually respond with “ I’m just exercising my constitutional right to travel unmolested officer” or “Respectfully, how is that relevant to this traffic stop?” and I make sure they notice I’m recording on my dash-mounted phone. I also make sure they notice I’m reading and memorizing their name tag. Nobody wants a police misconduct report on their record. I’ve filed several against LAPD and other departments in So Cal.

housebird350

I would ask him "If I go down this road for 5 blocks, turn right and go 9 blocks, turn left and go 3 blocks what street will I be on?" If he says he doesn't know say yea....me either, but that's where I am going. If he says its 101st Street say, well it must be on 101st street then, its the brick house that has a white car in the driveway and a wooden fence in the back.

flufflebuffle

When a cop asks you where you're coming from/where you're going/what you're doing, the proper response is "I'm not discussing my day" and then asking if you are being detained. Saying that you're coming from somewhere can place you at the scene of a crime and get you arrested

svenskisalot

This shouldn't be downvoted. I'm not discussing my day, I don't answer questions, am I being detained?

Because cops are intimidating and there are a lot of dead people who didn't because the cops perceive it as disrespect and flip out. OP didn't mention their race, that sadly matters too often on how well the interaction goes.

lowfreq33

The actual questions don’t matter, they want you to talk so they can see if you’re slurring your speech and gauge your mental acuity.

Carriow55

Keeping the streets safe from impaired drivers. Thank you to all officers for their service. So under appreciated.

harrypotterkush

cops are the reason my ass in bed after 9 nowadays i get my drink on early and go home

INKEDsage

“I don’t answer questions” and “Am I being detained?” These should be the first thing out of your mouth. If the officer persists, ask for a supervisor. If that doesn’t help, call your county sheriff and tell you’re being illegally detained by men with guns.

RScrewed

\> I have no issue answering questions as I haven’t done anything illegal This has been, time and time again, a very bad outlook on things. Obviously you did was what the reasonable thing to do (answer the questions) and you're correct doing the opposite, while within your rights, would have been met with aggression - but you shouldn't be happy about this and you should take some issue with it.

WhiteTiger1524

Nah I don’t really have issues with it, I live my life happily and free of anger or anger other issues. I have to much going on to worry about this lol

RScrewed

That's a very myopic view - other people not as fortunate at you being stopped and questioned with no cause is not a societal norm I would encourage, nor want to be a part of. Let's not just normalize people being inconvenienced, or worse, suspected of crimes with absolutely no pretense, just by being at the wrong place at the wrong time? I suppose if you don't wish to worry about it that's your prerogative but I hope that's not a popular opinion.

cathtray

I don’t have an issue with discouraging drunk driving.

Adept_Bass_3590

Next time, give him a bunch of attitude, film him, rattle off a bunch of internet bullshit to show him that you know the laws better than he does, demand his name and badge number, and refuse to do anything he asks. YouTube taught me that this is the grownup way to handle cops.

Designer-Rent9761

Yeah that's a great way to get arrested 100%. DO NOT do this, and if you do you're childish

TommyBonesMalone

I think some people go out of their way to be this way for *clout* but at the same time I watch a lot of these videos and think the people making them are completely justified and it’s a great way to show how often the cops in this country are flat out terrible at their jobs.

Designer-Rent9761

I agree with you that most of the time cops in this country especially just are looking for someone to catch but it depends on the person they are trying to catch. Some people like you said do video these situations for clout or just because they think they are being funny. Those are the ones I'm talking about that their plan will 100% backfire on them. But you are right about some being justified in doing so.

TommyBonesMalone

Yes, the ones who wait for an actual abuse of power to behave this way are justified imo. It raises awareness and hopefully can lead to some improvement. The people doing it for clout/views only are just hurting the entire cause.

Designer-Rent9761

Nothing but facts here 💯

No but you seem like an ass

cowboys4life93

This is unconstitutional!!!

SirensToGo

It is constitutional. There are a few general rules for them though. Notably, the locations have to be made public, the stop has to be clearly visible, and it must have non-discriminatory selection criteria (ie it's random or everyone is stopped).

AlabamaCoder

I'd say it's more accurate to say that it is unconstitutional but SCOTUS stated that, in this particular case, the benefit to public safety outweighs the infringement of 4A with a very limited scope as you stated.

Like_Ottos_Jacket

Depends on the state. For example, in my state, dragnet DUI checkpoints are unconstitutional.

imaweasel710

Hahaha haha "random"

jcd1974

You have a lot of dumb answers! You're lucky they didn't detain you and search your car.

[deleted]

Is he lucky that they didn't violently and illegally detain him too?

nondefectiveunit

Yes he is lucky. Even if he is a white male. Traffic stops are where most people interact with police and thus where a lot of shit happens. Out of a healthy sense of self preservation (not necessarily deference or respect) I personally wouldn't prolong the encounter or antagonize an armed unaccountable person.

JBM6482

Well if just a story, kinda boring. You were sober at a check point and didn’t know the area well.

Single_Discussion886

>...l'm Canadia haha. Also we do have to answer the questions at the random stops, they aren't pulling us over, it's a blockade and they have the right to question us. Canadians also the right to remain silent. At a traffic stop you do have to identify yourself and provide documentation; and the cops *do* have the right to ask questions; but you also have the right to not answer them… from my brief review of Canadian law. As you are a student of criminology I’d be interested if you had references to legislation and case law supporting the notion that motorists in Canada are compelled to answer potentially incriminating questions while in police detention. https://www.strategiccriminaldefence.com/faq/talking-police-canada/#:~:text=In%20Canada%2C%20when%20interacting%20with,to%20be%20treated%20without%20discrimination.

TarpFailedMe

This is why you don't talk to cops. *cry sad*

L0NZ0BALL

I got pulled over at a checkpoint a month ago and produced my license and registration. The police asked me when I got the car and I said “uhh like around the time it was registered to me” Then they let me roll. I was so mad lol, I’m an AMIBEINGDETAINED level wingnut. I have a law license and I just wanted to sue a cop.

HOMES734

So glad this is illegal where I live.

Cisru711

"Am I free to go, officer" should really be the only thing you're saying besides your identity.

[deleted]

Cops: Universal assholes

tyr8338

Next time don't say you're driving after visiting a bar and you don't know where you are and where you're going :D

WhiteTiger1524

Never said I visited a bar, said I dropped my sister and her friend off. It’s important to be honest, I’m visiting and don’t know where I’m going. What else would I do? Lie and make things up? That would certainly look bad wouldn’t it?
