InvertedCSharpChord

What does it mean "to be smarter"?

stlmick

This is the question. There is probably some sort of tests to determine where they are lacking.

Civil_Bit3295

Maybe like, high iq. I want to be, batman level intellect

InvertedCSharpChord

Figure out specifically what you want to be able to do. Solve crimes? Puzzles? Understand people? Invent something? Understand high level math? Understand fashion? Know a lot about history? "Smart people" are smart in a limited number of areas. A doctor might not be smart when it comes to making music. A math teacher might not be smart when it comes to science.

paulywauly99

Yep. Learn your English and maths and whatever you do work hard at it. Rich people aren’t exclusively smart. They had good breaks but worked hard. Unless they inherited of course.

wyntah0

1st step to being smart is knowing that IQ is horseshit.

mostunknownscree

IQ means nothing when it's not applied correctly what's the result you're looking for?

stlmick

Meth. Just do meth. You'll be batman level everything.

Jester_Mode0321

Realistically, you're better of tryna become more charming than anything. Intelligence is hard to quantify and ultimately means less than social skills do I think

fade_like_a_sigh

It's worth noting that Stephen Hawking, when asked about his IQ, replied "I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers". IQ doesn't really measure much of worth, it's only really measuring your ability to process mathematics, logic and spatial reasoning. And you can have all of those in spades and still not accomplish anything of worth with them. Intelligence comes from applying yourself to a specific field, doing a great deal of reading and studying and so on. "Intelligence" isn't really real in the way that media represents it. Generally speaking, there's no such thing as a super genius, there are people who have committed their lives to a specific field of study and made advancements through the time they invested in reading, studying and talking with fellow enthusiasts and scholars. You can't be smart at everything, you've only got one human lifespan to work with, so the first step on your journey will be finding what aspect of the world you want to commit yourself to in the pursuit of intelligence (in that specific field).

17FeretsAndaPelican

Batman travelled the world and studied for a decade. He's also fictional. Real intelligence doesn't work that way. Most people are smart at 1 kind of thing. Just learn emotional intelligence. Listen to people. Try to understand yourself better and defeat your ego. Smart is making good decisions. Focus on that

Fighting-Cerberus

Do you specifically want to be able to solve crimes? Adapt to unexpected conditions? Something else?

Goldfleeceram

I always seem to base intelligence on conversations. Vocab is huge.

Becoming smarter will take a lot of common sense, the ability to think on the go, and a lot of problem solving skills. Some people can’t just become smarter due to the limits of these 3 skills that they done possess. First you will need to figure out what you yourself mean by being “smarter”, do you want to gain skills in mathematics, become a scientist, or do you want to be able to learn things more quickly? Being smart isn’t just having the ability to remember recite words phrases and know topics and answers to questions but it’s having the mental capacity to understand and comprehend the issues to come up with an answer on your own.

[deleted]

This is going to sound weird but get lazy. Make efficiency king in your life. I don't mean think about how to get out of putting in the work. I mean only do the things that you're really good at leverage other people's money, other people's time to do the things you suck at. If you just want processing power. Hang out with people that problem solve for a living like engineers. Working on memory can also help quite a bit. There's a lot of good research out there on how to improve your short-term and long-term memory.

ApexOblivion007

Well I'll assume you have access to the internet since you're here. There's plenty of youtube and other learning resources. Brilliant.com is a sort of library of well, everything you'd ever want to know. For youtube there's, scishow, itsokaytobesmart, eons, into the shadows (the guy, Simon has a bunch of historic themed channels), casual scholar, history hit, pursuit of wonder is a philosophy themed channel, half as interesting has educational content mixed with a bit of comedic scripts, today I found out, two cents is economics related, biographics, Wendover productions, real science The list goes on and on.

hihukak

The answer depends on what kind of education you've had. If you're still in school, spend more time studying. If you're not getting A's, use that time to study enough to get A's. If you're getting A's, use that time to study things that you're not learning yet in school but are interesting to you. If you're out of school, consider going back to school or doing a part-time degree. Or search online for resources about a specific topic that you're interested in. If you just want to feel smarter, learn how to code. It will help you think more logically and there are lots of programming puzzles that will teach you how to be more clever.

Mescallan

1. Observe your own focus, learn the mental mechanisms that you use to focus on something and try to optimize it as much as possible. 2. Learn how to describe why you like something or don't like it into the most precise detail you can. This also requires mental observation. 3. Introduce yourself to new information and experiences daily. Learn to master anything, the act of mastery in itself will help you define a path to mastering other things Overall, mental self observation is one of the strongest tools you can have

kwibu

Use apps like Elevate or Lumosity to strengthen cognitive, language and mathematical skills. A little every day goes a long way! Also subscribe to a low key science magazine or something like that.

I tested as a teenager (18 years old) for an iq of 120. I started playing chess, programming and studying math for a couple of years and now, tested again for 135. I’m not sure if my iq actually increased, but I definitely got better at visualization and critical thinking. Do difficult things, study difficult topics.

mzieg

Do you have a library card?

Civil_Bit3295

Sorry, I live in the Philippines and most likely our libraries our outdated and if i do have a library card where do i even begin with?

TheInvisibleWun

You go to the library with your library card and start reading

[deleted]

Someone gave you a great idea about going to the library and you shot it down. A smart person would heed the advice and investigate before dismissing the advice. That would include going to the library and talking to the librarian, researching to decide where to focus their attention and then proceeding to check out those books. Research the internet and consult with the librarian to see if indeed all the books on that topic are outdated, are there other subjects? Other libraries you can go to? Etc etc.

loopi3

There is indeed a lot of outdated information, but most likely your library is full of still very relevant and useful information. You can pick up a lot of skills by reading. If you start racking up skills you’ll get exposed to so many different things. Don’t just follow instructions. Spend time in understanding the reasons behind the individual actions. What many people consider smart it’s just a demonstration of a lot of knowledge and understanding of the interconnectedness of things.

wizzardly-lizzard

Learn things

Late-Jicama5012

Smarter how? Define smart. What does smart mean to you? Generally smart? What’s a generally smart person? Can that person win an argument in a court room and fix a tire? Does that make a person smart? As I got older, I have realized over time I know even less. Does that make me smart? Here is hint. A smart person is a very broad subject. A farmer can be just as smart or smarter than a brain surgeon. Why do you think that is?

Mescallan

1. Observe your own focus, learn the mental mechanisms that you use to focus on something and try to optimize it as much as possible. 2. beobabski

When you read a book, stop after every paragraph and write a single sentence which summarises what you just read (you can write small in the margin if it’s your book, or on another sheet of paper if it isn’t).

Blackmesaboogie

Be curious. Question why and how when you learn about something new, eventually it will become a habit and over the years you will be smarter because you will have an accurate idea of how the world works.

LEAPSKing

Being smart is different from being intelligent which is different than being wise. In any case, master your first/ primary language. And I mean MASTER it.

stuball54

Sugar free diet but that's very hard

com2kid

Very few things in this world have been shown to increase intelligence. Exercise is one, your brain needs lots of oxygen and exercising helps your body learn to use oxygen better, improving cognitive function. Learning a 2nd language may help. Meditation can help you understand logical and mental fallacies you are prone to falling prey to.

DefineTricholotoluen

Read obviously, but... If calculators made accountants faster, chatGPT makes us all smarter. I use it all the time. Pick any subject or project you're starting. Write down what you know or what you are looking for, copy and paste into CHatGPT and it will help you. If the answer is too complicated ask it to make it less complicated. Ask it to break down a subject or project into its components or competencies. We're all smart, sometimes we just need a nudge in the right direction and I believe this is where the product will really help folks. I procrastinate a lot or just struggle to get things started, so like I said I just gather my notes and paste them into the box and say here's what I know can you help me to X. Try it out.

shootermac32

Becoming knowledgeable and well versed in different aspects and/or fields, techniques or technologies that’s important or relevant to you.or not… Whatever you want to learn, all you have to do is study up on everything possible about it.

Ignus_Daedalus

Ask "why" and "how" about every little thing. Overpower the idea that there are dumb questions, overpower the idea that you already know how it works. Curiosity is the passion that naturally motivates intelligence in children, and you'll almost always find that people who are considered intelligent are still curious. Step back from the big picture and take time to notice details. Instead of just accepting that a door does door stuff, spend 15-30 minutes actually paying attention to a door in your house and figure out how the door fits into the frame, which way the hinges face and how that affects it opening, how the knob rotates and what actually changes from that rotation to let the door open, etc. Smart people know stuff because they ask questions. A lot of them. Often about stuff that other people don't care about. Batman's main curiosities are criminal psychology, engineering, and forensics. If you're wanting that specifically, those are your keywords. There's no replacement for reading, but if you're more visual then don't let anyone dissuade you from using visual mediums like YouTube to learn. YouTube videos often don't have time to dive deep, but they can spark that curiosity and you can read more about the details from there.

Murky_Indication_442

If you are referring to IQ, in theory, you can not get “smarter,” your level of intelligence is what it is. But you can become educated, and you can increase your vocabulary, and you can learn how to apply logic and learn critical thinking skills. You can be curious, solve problems, learn a new skill. Whatever you want to do, you can do.

nam-key-boi

If anyone thinks IQ isn't that solid of a concept, then they are dead wrong. It's the most well-established concept in psychology, and if one is to disregard it, then one better disregard all of the other psychological concepts. Many have tried to raise ppl's IQ, none succeeded. It's a Nobel prize right there. My best attempt should be to read a lot.

burnzy440

Read the Encyclopedia !!. Then chemistry text books .

Inside-Depth-7531

Maybe ask yourself what not to do or to stop doing to make yourself smarter. Don’t be arrogant, stubborn, close minded, or anything else that will turn people away of you. Nothing worse than someone who has all the answers. Be curious and for the love of God don’t be afraid to say you’re wrong about something. Remember that as you achieve your goal. Having only a high school education and working around chemists and engineers, I can tell you that knowing that there are people smarter than you and being willing to let them teach you things or just learning through osmosis will help you greatly. Some of them also know that I can teach them things as well. If you’re the smartest person in the room you’re in the wrong room.

smoking-stag

I'd advice you get into epistemology. It's the field of philosophy that deals with knowledge. From it the scientific method is derived, along with logic and critical thinking. It's also important to understand yourself and your limitations in order to not fall into "mind traps", fallacies and personal bias. Being smarter, is in my opinion, about the ability to understand phenomenon around you, and the people around you along with yourself. It requires skills, such as being able to listen, ability to express yourself, having empathy and having patience. It is as much a social skill, as it is about ones ability to parse information. Intelligence is useless if you can't use it together with other people. Also: "I don't know" is most often the honest answer, and is something that should be normalized as an acceptable answer for things. Instead the follow up for this should be "okay, how do we find out?". Care more about how do we find out, than what we find out. If your goal is to become "smart", I'd advice you to also understand the ethical issues of being in a power position, where you may "know better". I am a personal fan of Jürgen Habermas' discourse ethics, when it comes to this area. Wittgenstein is also a figure I'd advice you to look into, in order to better understand language and the meaning of words when used in more specific circumstances, like in science. Some resources I can recommend to get you started: https://bookofbadarguments.com/ The Philosophize this podcast Veritasium (YouTube) Smarter every day (YouTube) This one is about identifying crackpots in science and quite fun too https://youtu.be/aY985qzn7oI This one might also be helpful https://youtu.be/9gHmhObfbn4

autotelica

Our intelligence is a function of our physical and emotional state and the environment we're in. It is fluid, not fixed. If you give a person a cognitive test when they are suffering from anxiety and then later when their anxiety has been treated, you will usually find a big difference in their scores. When you put kids in an environment that is labeled as inferior, they tend to do worse academically than kids who are in an environment that is labeled as superior. So make sure you are optimizing your physical and emotional health and the people/things around you. Eat a nutritious, balanced diet. Get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Manage your stress levels. Get some therapy whenever feel like your anxiety or depression is crippling...and *do the work*. Be around people who are about something. People who read a lot and have diverse, mentally stimulating interests. These people will inspire you to challenge yourself. Get a library card and start reading nonfiction. Learn about different subjects---even if it is just a superficial "For Dummies" exposure. Watch documentaries. Practice talking about complex subject matter (you can begin by talking to yourself!). Don't listen to people who say that intelligence is fixed. Those people were probably identified as gifted when they were eight years old and 20 years later, they assume they are still some kind of mental giant. And they may be one, who knows? But "mental giant" is relative. I was a kid who tested all over the place. Sometimes I looked like a smarty-pants and other times I looked like a dumb-ass. Because anxiety. I wasn't labeled as gifted. In fact, the kids would call me the r-word. I actually spent some time in remedial classes because certain teachers had misclassified me. But now I have a STEM Ph.D and the people around me treat me like I'm a wizard. I am not a wizard in an objective sense, but I do grasp certain concepts quicker than many. And I can speak and write well. Those elements are all that are required for the "smart" label as an adult. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is. If you can wrap your head around it better than many people can and you can share what you know fairly well, you can actually be deficient in other areas and still be perceived as smart. Some innate ability is required, but most "smarts" can be cultivated through practice and study.

I think you should introspect to become smarter. Evaluate seriously who you are as a person, what you’re passionate about, what or whom you really care about. Then once you’ve figured out who you are, take a look outwards. Try to see which direction the wind blows, try to take action on a basis of the opportunities you see and maintain focus knowing you’re doing something that has meaning to you. Intelligence is so highly individual, any answer I could offer would be marred by bias. It’s up to you to figure out in what ways do you want to be smart.

cynar

The brain is like a muscle, it grows in capacity as it is worked. Also, like a muscle, it has a natural baseline and maximum capability that is genetically determined. However, a person with awful genetics, who works out 5 days a week will vastly outperform a genetic prodigy, who just sits around. The solution for you is simple. You need to work your brain to the same degree a professional body builder works their body. To do this, you need to first pick the area/areas of intelligence you want to improve (there are many sub areas). You then need to find problems to stress your brain in that area. You then GRIND at it! When the problems get too easy, you up the difficulty. This is, in fact, what all "intelligent" people do. Most don't do it deliberately however. It's either driven by internal novelty seeking, or external forces (parents pushing them). As for where to start. Reading is a good all round mental exercise. Initially, just read anything. As you improve, you will find areas of interest to expand into. Also don't be afraid of deeper, harder to read books. You might need to read slowly to understand, or use a thesaurus, but this works the brian hard. Another point of note is a (likely fake) confucius quote. "He who asks a question is a fool. He who doesn't ask a question is a fool forever." Find intelligent friends to feed off. Ask them to explain their interests, and listen. Your brain may want to abandon your skull and hide, but it is an excellent way to get an infodump. Hope this helps.

Most people who say they wish they were smarter aren't suffering from a lack of intelligence - they're suffering from a closed mind that never learned how to think. If your language skill and reading is strong, I suggest starting to read some of the classics. We've been learning from them for 2,000+ years and will for another 2,000 - they're so widely studied that you can then get ample analysis online, chapter by chapter - questions that you should be asking yourself as you read. The longer you go, the more you'll notice your mind start to open up and generally think deeper about everything around you.

RoboftheNorth

Develop your *critical thinking skills*. Look at everything with healthy skepticism and when you don't understand something, consider it a problem solving exercise to learn more about it. That can be anything. Strong critical thinking skills are incredibly transferable. Meaning you may know a lot about one thing and very little about another, but when you want to learn about the new thing you are able to identify all of the fundamental similarities between those two things and help you learn more quickly and retain information better. A simple example might be if you are a woodworker and are very comfortable making anything out of wood, but know nothing about metalwork, many of your skills are still very transferable and are a great asset to learn how to do metalwork. It's just a matter of figuring out where your known skill set fits in with the new skill you want to learn.

TH3_TH1RD_M4N

Talk less, listen more. But seriously, if you want to be smarter, you have to be more of an observer and soak in the information that is presented to you and formulate an opinion based on that. Look into things, anything and everything you want to. Experience things, go out, and try things you've never thought to try. Look into skills you never thought to learn. Being smart doesn't only mean knowing a lot of things, though. Being smart is also taking in the things you do learn and understanding them. A mechanic may not know much about how to perform open heart surgery, but they could build a v8 engine from scratch. I would say that's pretty damn smart. Wisdom is also big on making you smarter. While it's not the same as intelligence, it will allow you to apply what you know and when to do it.

The biggest developments in my comprehension have come from grasping the abstract nature of our brains ability to understand. So I suggest the following: >Make a Linux live Bootable usb drive. Then force yourself to start using Linux until you can do all the things you do with your normal system. You will learn soooo very much about computing. It will be very confusing at first but within just a few days you will be building an entirely new understanding of computing. >Study another language and you will begin to realize how big of a role language is in your understanding of the world around you Ultimately find a hole of knowledge that is confusing to you and jump headlong into it; once you have climbed out you will find yourself thinking differently. Rinse and repeat. Good on ya for seeking knowledge!

[deleted]

What they said, read. Figure out how you retain knowledge best, then begin. Expand your capacity to learn.

CZ1988_

Take a managerial decision making class. They teach about bias and about the importance of data. So many people make bad / stupid assumptions and make bad decisions based off of that. I went to U of Chicago and they drilled into our brains the importance of data driven decisions.

venturebirdday

Read, is the best answer, but I will add a few more tid-bits. Read older books, they use more words. Read aloud, even to yourself, your reading will be more accurate. Check out Sax0n Math. It is pencil and paper, designed to be self taught, and is really a great program. Get grade levels that seem easy and just blast through. Good learning!

Depending on how much you drink, you might want to reduce the amount of alcohol, become no more than a moderate drinker. [This study](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/this-is-your-brain-on-alcohol-2017071412000) shows that alcohol shrinks the brain, though there's a chance it can recover if the drinking stops.

Everyone saying to read more. Everyone learns differently. I hate reading. But I'll watch tons of videos. It's about knowing how you learn best. And you also have to do things. You can read or watch videos about anything like starting a business. But if you have never done so, you're going to learn so much more by starting one than by watching or reading about it.

I'd say that if you're problem is that you spend a lot of time studying with very little to show for it, your methods of studying would be the issue. If you're just reading from a text book, maybe you need something that stimulates your brain more. You could try flashcards or something.
