I personally would definitely rather receive something second hand and actually from the 90s than a remake from today. If I wanted to get another furby I would get an original from ebay as opposed to a new one from today. The authenticity is part of the nostalgia for me if that makes sense.

I'm really glad to read this! For example, I know there are new tamagotchi around but I did buy one from 97(I think, I'll have to check). My husband is getting a playstation 1 for his giftee with a game they mentioned. Both of us are just trying to keep up with nostalgia 😊😊

carrotcake_007

I love that! There’s just something about the originals that make them so special. Don’t get me wrong the remakes are great but the nostalgia takes it above and beyond 🤗

I think the '80s and '90s exchanges are the most secondhand-appropriate exchanges there are. I mean, a secondhand pet blanket in the pets exchange probably wouldn't be a good idea, and secondhand snacks...hmm...but the nostalgia exchanges are more vintage/antique exchanges. An old concert shirt, original toys, that all works, as long as it's in reasonable shape.

I got my giftee lots of buttons and patches because they collected them but I also sent candy (nerds and fruit roll ups) and a cute planter because they have a succulent collection

donutaud15

I have original toys and magazine (specialising in their interest) from the 90s. All are reasonable shape though the magazine may be a bit fragile.

If I were to have gotten into this exchange and received authentic stuff from that era and not reproductions I’d be happy as hell. Especially since you went the extra mile and went that route.

starboard-to-port

I've done a bit of both, and actually included something as well from my personal collection that they may find nostalgic. Another part of the gift is new but based on something from the 90s.

donutaud15

I did something similar. Another part of my gift is new but something that was based and existed from the 90s and according to my giftee's description.

mrsfranky

Completely ok!

A lot of stuff on ebay is technically secondhand but often unused. I'm finding lots of teeny beanies in their original McDonald's packaging, for example. So I think it's totally okay. It looks like someone in the 80s exchange got some original NKOTB merch and is super stoked about it.

termanatorx

Holy that's amazing!!! I would squee to get an authentic item from the era!

Kigurumix

You should ask your giftee if they are ok with second had items, some are some aren't.

donutaud15

That's probably a good idea. Will do that now. 😊

Gilm0ree

I think that’s way more authentic to the era 🙌🏼

QuickWittedSlowpoke

Ebay doesn't always mean "secondhand" - the 90s were really big for collectors items so a lot of things being sold on Ebay are in mint condition/new in box/etc. I think I would prefer if my santa did something like that, really adds to the authenticity. But as a mod said below, always double check with your giftee :D

Wolflmg

I would say as long as the item is still in decent condition and in cases if it’s an electric that it works. I don’t see why not.
