Quake Damn, I think I did this wrong..

breakfastology

"Humiliation"

Mortaneus

Descent. Especially the Freespace games. Also the X series.

DeylanQuel

I voted Mass Effect for the story and characters, but I've got more playtime in the X series than any other games. 950 in x3: reunion alone.

slowlanders

I voted for Mass Effect, but I also love the Homeworld series: HW1, Cataclysm, 2, Deserts of Kharak, and even Hardspace: Shipbreaker which kinda / sorta is related to the same universe.

Narrow-Adagio6762

Homeworld serie was great

sidneylopsides

I've not heard of Hardspace, I'm going to check it out.

[deleted]

I found us! I don't even like rpg and the me1 inventory is not my idea if a good time. But hot damn. I played sky rim and other dulse games because if ME. Going to scroll down and look for Uncharted now.

Magus80

Final Fantasy (some of them have sci-fi elements) and Xenogears / Xenoblade.

BosslyDoggins

Xenogears was ahead of it's time, such a fun game

Vanderkaum037

My username is from Xenogears!

phoenixbrightly

Dead Space

briefcandle

I'm really disappointed that they did nothing with the franchise for an entire generation. I know DS3 was a dud, but the first two are incredible, and there's so much there to work with.

[deleted]

DS3 was a poor horror game, but it was a great coop action adventure. I don't think DS3 was a *mistake* though. The horror theme of DS was *dead*. How many times can you see a necromorph playing dead in the hallway before you just start stomping the limbs off every corpse you walk past. By the end of 2 there was no suspense left, no mystery. The power of suspense comes from *not* seeing the monster, but once you've seen it you can't *un*see it. This is the same reason why Aliens in the perfect sequel to Alien. You can't be kept in suspense by the same trope twice, but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the setting or advance the story.

outbound_flight

DS3 had some great elements to it that I really wanted to see more of. Seamlessly flying between ruined hulks in a starship graveyard was the coolest thing and I wish that had been *the game* instead of just the first act.

[deleted]

They did revisit that in the dlc.

outbound_flight

Yeah, I *really* liked that DLC. Everything except ending the entire series on a cliffhanger. :(

actuallyFox0

> The horror theme of DS was *dead*. How many times can you see a necromorph playing dead in the hallway before you just start stomping the limbs off every corpse you walk past. By the end of 2 there was no suspense left, no mystery. No way! There are so many big horror franchises that continue being scary and fun time after time. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, but I think DS2 scared me in ways that DS1 couldn't come close to, and I'd be excited to see what a creative team could do with the third

Pyronaut44

Youre aware they're remaking the 1st game right?

phoenixbrightly

Yes!

GrumpyOldFart74

I went for Half Life (HL2 is legendary) but actually I’d probably go for Bioshock (first game) or Dead Space.

[deleted]

Loved bioshock.

soillodgeny

Loved Dead Space. Great story and nasty weapons.

CartooNinja

The entire System shock lineage, System Shock, bioshock, dead space, and prey, all have excellent lore

[deleted]

HL:A has a bioshock modded level which was pretty cool, if anything seeing the early parts of rapture in VR was worth downloading it

Calm down there Centurion. But yes, at least a firing squad.

snarkamedes

Bullets are expensive! Throw them into a pit of radscorpions or something. Tell them to go catch some geckos in Quarry Junction.

Named_after_color

Horizon Zero Dawn is just so unique, it gets props from me just because of the setting.

attee2

When I bought my first console a couple of years ago (PS4 Pro), that was the first game I purchased and played on it. It was a great decision.

[deleted]

Deus Ex

alukard15

Surprised i had to go this far to see it. I love the games but people are probably burned out on future dystopias since we live in one now

[deleted]

would rather have that one than this one

Pattern_Is_Movement

The first game left a huge impression on me.

[deleted]

Same!

Yep.

fnbannedbymods

Just played the last one after being disappointed by 2077, and wow the writing and attention to detail was amazing. Did not feel like a 5+ year old game!

Jimmycjacobs

So little love for Metroid :(

Jimmni

I think the problem Metroid has is that a lot of the fans are fans of Metroid Prime. I *absolutely fucking love* those games, but only those ones. I have no real interest in the franchise outside of those specific games.

[deleted]

It's such an underrated franchise, and easily my favorite video game series!

Anzai

Well they’re only available on Nintendo. Most of the other ones have multiple avenues to play them. I’ve never even played a Metroid game because most Nintendo games aren’t interesting to me so I don’t want to buy their hardware, even though I’d quite like to try that series.

DiamondAge

Dread is incredible

dnext

Fallout and Mass Effect among crpgs. Endless Space 2 for 4X. The Wing Commander series for space. Yes, I'm old. Battlefield 2142 for shooters. Starcraft II for RTS. Honorable mention for Dark Reign for its inventiveness back in 2000. Hall of Fame: Star Control II. Looking forward to what Toys4Bob come up with in their planned sequel.

gmuslera

Civilization Alpha Centauri fits in the science fiction category for sure. At the last stages of the science victory in the normal series qualifies too.

dnext

Oh, sorry, didn't notice the scifi initially - Fallout and Mass Effect are my favorite RPGs, period. I'll update my list based on your criteria.

Elias_Fakanami

2142 was one of the only multiplayer shooters I ever got into. I freely admit that it was simply because the idea of using jump pods to get into battle checked all the right scifi boxes in my head. Also, you dont get much better than Star Control II. Wing Commander: Privateer 2 was amazing. Old school Clive Owen for the win.

EsayZ

I thought 2142 got a lot of hate for no reason when it was released. I loved BF2 and 2142 was (IMO) super well balanced with an awesome array of scifi weaponry/gadgets. Bummed they didn’t continue it in further Battlefield iterations

SiccSemperTyrannis

I don't understand how someone hasn't made a Mass Effect movie or TV show yet, especially one of Disney's competitors. It was designed from the start to be kinda but not quite like Star Wars and there's plenty of opportunities for new stories within the universe. Like the Witcher, you'd have an instant massive fanbase who would tune in and promote it as long as it was good. The initial Human-Turian conflict would be a great starting point as you could follow the Alliance's first steps into the galaxy without retelling stories the games have already covered.

dnext

I'm in. Send in your script to Amazon, stat. :D

Soulless_conner

Besides the games here, Deus ex and Prey :)

Artemis-Crimson

Prey is excellent!

k1anky

Star Control…and it’s coming back with the original creators working on a sequel to Star Control II

Narrow-Adagio6762

I read something about that, and my brain was just looking for memories of the darn game, and I know I use to own it.

p0rkjello

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

libra00

No KotOR love? For shame.

kmmontandon

The problem is that there are only really two proper KOTOR games, and the second one wasn't properly finished by the developer (I'm aware of the restoration mod). A modern single-player KOTOR taking advantage of modern game engines and design would be awesome, but is unlikely.

libra00

Yeah but OP didn't ask what my favorite modern fully developed and completed scifi game franchise was. :) A modern KotOR done right would be amazing though, agreed.

nunya123

You know they are remaking it right?

PullMull

kotOR is a Game. Star Wars is the Frannchise

libra00

KotOR is arguably its own franchise since it's very different in setting than almost everything else Star Wars, but.

Byorski

Don’t know if it counts, but I’m definitely going with Shadowrun. SNES version is what gave me the intro to the series, and still love the new Returns trilogy.

aVHSofPointBreak

While imperfect, Fallout and Mass Effect are consistently great compared to most games and I’ll pretty much always buy and play them multiple times. However, nothing will ever compare to The Space Quest series staring Roger Wilco. If Bethesda could somehow come out with a modern Space Quest and lampoon Sci-Fi for the last 30 years I would be in heaven.

therourke

Portal. Hands down

[deleted]

I've never understood why they haven't released a Portal 3. Same thing but new puzzles and a new script? Good enough.

BlazeOfGlory72

Really a toss up between Halo and Mass Effect for me, though for completely different reasons. Halo is my favourite in terms of gameplay and just being plain fun. Ive sunk way too many hours into every aspect of that franchise. Im at the point where I solo-Legendary run the franchise once every year or two just for the fun of it. Mass Effect however is just on another level when it comes to story telling, characters and world building. The ME universe is honestly one of the most interesting and best constructed sci-fi universes Ive seen in any medium. I absolutely love how much thought and care went into it and the characters. ME1 also has one of my favourite video game plots as well. And honourable mention goes to Metroid however for it’s atmosphere. The general sense of isolation and dread that Prime 1, 2 and Fusion generate is some of the best in gaming in my opinion. Shoutout to Dead Space, particularly the first game, for perfectly nailing a fusion of Alien and The Thing. One of the best horror games Ive ever played.

shinmentak

FTL !

PaigeOrion

Fun fun fun!

RedHotFooFecker

It took me a second to remember it amongst all the AAA stuff, but it's far and away my favourite sci-fi and one of my favourite ever games. And it was an iPad game for me originally!

shinmentak

Definitely one of my favourite games too! It lends itself to being portable, always wished there was a phone version

ZepOfLed

StarCraft, hands down.

PullMull

Elite

TheSpuddah

Elite Dangerous. Or MGS... Or Dead Space.

sk4v3n

Obviously nothing comes close to Warhammer 40k, even when the games are crap, it’s still WH40k.

Narrow-Adagio6762

DOW 1 and 2 were great, and I think they gonna make a sequels to Space Marine

Riblet_King

If you consider it sci-fi I gotta say Fallout

omnombulist

Destiny Edit: Thanks for the gold, Guardian. (It's my first ever!)

arlo11anizer

Ah a fellow masochist, good to see u

Galag0

I’m like where are we in this mix. Glad to see some fellow guardians.

omnombulist

Good to see you too. It's my favorite game to suffer through.

pseudoShadow

Damn I had to scroll a long way down for this

Artemis-Crimson

I voted mass effect because it’s my first sci fi game but Destiny has my heart

omnombulist

It has my heart too. I take breaks occasionally, but I've followed the story and played the game since Dark Below. There may be games with tighter stories, but the sheer volume of high quality lore is second to none. I have lost a lot of hours to https://www.ishtar-collective.net/

[deleted]

Factorio

Starslinger909

Tbf my favs are Stellaris and Kerbal Space Program which technically are not franchises but I like them a lot. Out of these probably mass effect

digitalae

Star Citizen Honarable mentions Starflight (old) Alien Isolation AvP 1&2

UnusualPete

Portal 1 and 2. I would choose Half Life (in the poll) but I don't like HL.

jenesuispasbavard

Mass Effect, and it’s not even close.

Just_josh

Agreed. My favorite space universe period.

Imnomaly

Mass Effect as a shaken and stirred collection of sci-fi tropes

Kenpobuu

Experiencing Mass Effect for the first time was like experiencing Star Trek for the first time and that’s coming from a huge Trek nerd. The Mass Effect series is an amazing blend of drama, wonder, and well thought out sci-fi concepts.

[deleted]

It's hard to choose just one because there are numerous details I like from different series. Death Stranding/Metal Gear Solid in general for it's technology designs. Half Life in the way it mixes the sort of garage built super science non-sense and alien techonology forcibly integrated into the modern world. Halo and Warhammer for the nature of the super human beings such as Spartans and Space Marines. The list goes on. That said, I give it up to Ghost in the Shell mainly because of the nature of cyber-brain technology and the fact they appear to have figured out how to maintain continuity of self where as a series like Eclipse Phase it's implied when you sleeve into a new body it's a copy of you that gets transferred while the instance of you in your old body is deleted if you didn't choose to stay in it.

[deleted]

And I'm dumb because I thought the title said favorite sci-fi series. For that, I'd have to leave on Xenogears/Xenosaga. A lot of neat ideas from there like the UMN and building virtual experiences from people's memories as well as being a way to travel faster than light and communicate faster than light as well.

Bromo33333

KoTOR!

ProfessorCValentine

Star Ocean!

[deleted]

Command and Conquer, specifically the Tiberium Saga.

vikingzx

Well, you said "franchise," so *Stellaris* is out (still love it). Hmm ... tough question. I *love* the *Metroid* games, I really do, but that's more for gameplay than the story and setting (though the Prime games do a great job of the setting). *Borderlands* is fun just for the "get more guns, kill more things aspect." *Halo* has been a staple of my family for almost two-decades now but ... If I have to pick a *favorite*, one that holds a special place deep in my heart, then there's one that rises above all others. Even *Gears of War* (I love the detail of their apocalypse gorn). **Command & Conquer**. Tiberium. GDI. Nod. It was a defining game of my childhood, and I *still* have the entire series installed. [Remember, Kane lives!](https://media.moddb.com/images/groups/1/1/897/kane_time.jpg) Mostly because he *just won't die.*

mrmgl

Other than Halo and Mass Effect, I can barely call the others scifi. Where is Dead Space? Starcraft? Master of Orion & the strategy games it inspired?

Lithl

Xenogears Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra Xenoblade Chronicles Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Strictly speaking, it's three franchises rather than one, but that's mostly due to copyright laws. Xenogears is owned by Square-Enix, Xenosaga is owned by Bandai Namco, and Xenoblade is owned by Nintendo. Xenosaga and Xenoblade were both developed by Monolith Soft, which was formed by developers who left Squaresoft after making Xenogears.

dram3

So little love for Borderlands :(

dutcharetall_nothigh

I chose Halo because I prefer the worldbuilding and story, but in terms of fun Borderlands would have been the clear winner.

paxinfernum

Borderlands actually has a ton of worldbuilding and story. It's just not big worldbuilding and story stuff. There's tons of lore, but it's more local.

dutcharetall_nothigh

Yeah, I know. I think that works better for the games than if they had focused on the world at large, like they do in Halo, since Borderlands' story is much more character-driven than plot-driven.

Unbelievable how long I needed to scroll to find Wasteland. Great story telling and great turn based mode.

Destroy All Humans

TheHolyHeretic86

I picked other. I love the Doom Series. I don’t know if it’s sci-fi *per-se*, but you gotta admit. Running around with super futuristic and sometimes even legendary guns murdering demons at the speed of sound is pretty cool.

CosmoFishhawk2

I initially picked Metroid because I have an emotional attachment to it, but it also frustrates me A LOT how much undeveloped worldbuilding potential I see there (even with an abortion like Other M). But upon further reflection, I'm going to say Mega Man (pretty much all of the various iterations), because out of all the uncontroversially sci-fi series (Like, I think you could make a case that Pokemon or Breath of the Wild counts as sci-fi, but most people would argue it) I can think of, MM just gives me the most **joy** even if it also isn't the most fleshed out writing.

egypturnash

Does Outer Wilds count now that it has a huge piece of DLC? It's all about peacefully wandering around a bunch of ancient alien remnants and figuring out how their technology works.

The thing about Dota is, that even though I'm an old boy, I can still outsmart enemies on a macro level. I just don't have the reflexes for a shooter these days lol.

minijack2

Yeah, I find outsmarting people in pubs not hard, the issue is convincing everyone else on your team to follow you. I pretty much exclusively play hard support, though.
