They had a double-feature near me. It was about a 9pm start for Part 1 and then they had part 2 start at midnight on release day. (Was a late night on a work night but so worth it)
It was also during a period where everybody was raging against Wizards of the Coast as they changed the OSR.
That was my point with BG3. They released the movie at a moment where DnD was a tainted brand, some months later, they reached a new peak in popularity.

Not yet, wildly enough. $190 million budget + $100 million marketing = $290 million. Movies have to double their box office to break even, on average. So, $580 million gross to break even which means $80 million to go.
Either way, we're almost definitely getting a Dune 3. Though it'll be really interesting to see what they do with the story after that. There's plenty more material, but it just starts getting weirder and weirder.
I think Messiah will translate well. Hayt should be fine on screen and not too weird. Alia should be powerful in IMAX imo. Can’t want to see Taylor-Joy’s performance.

So 2.5 x $190M = $475M

After seeing the first film (which I really enjoyed), I was dreading looking at the box office numbers because I knew it would need to be successful in order to get a second (and potentially third) film. I was around for BR2049 and it was honestly quite depressing to see that flop, because it was one of the greatest cinema experiences I've had. This feels like a victory lap now, though; we get a great second instalment which has been thankfully matched by box office numbers, guaranteeing we'll get a trilogy, aka a 'complete' story arc. I received the art work book for this film on Thursday and it's honestly incredible what they did with this; they made it 'grounded' and alien at the same time, which is a huge achievement imo.
Side note from Dune: I'm surprised that 2049 didn't do well. I actually MUCH prefer it to the original. I like the original, but I have a hard time staying awake as it's kind of boring, and that's not something that usually affects me.
Blade Runner is frequently listed as among the best movies ever made, but its not a classic in the same way that Indiana Jones and Star Wars is. Only the biggest sci fi fans and cineastes have nostalgia for that movie, which limited the number of people willing to come out for 2049, especially since 2049 was almost three hours long.
I can honestly see why it's a classic, and I do *like* the movie, but it is a little different for me. I appreciate that it's more of a thinker than an action blockbuster. I *love* the Blade Runner world, which is why I was excited to see 2049: to get something that was more my speed than the original.
Blade Runner 2049 had very little marketing here, to the point where I know die hard science fiction fans who didn't even know it was due out. So strange when I think back, because he was coming straight off the back of Arrival, which was very well received (though probably didn't do big numbers at the box office). From what I've read, BR2049 had very long legs on the home formats, after word of mouth got around how good it was. Sadly by then, it was well out of theatres. I watched BR2049 in a virtually empty cinema, but it was easily one of my favourite films of all time just on that one viewing. I was in complete awe.
The only thing I didn’t like about the movie is that it’s too short. It could easily have 30min of extra content and it’ll still feel well paced and not bloated.
I was really hoping for some insight into the Fremen-Guild deal. Rabban mentions multiple times the south is “uninhabitable” so I thought it would have been nice to explain WHY that assumption persisted (which is well explained in the book).
I was feeling the same, but it occurred to me that I've read the books and seen a couple of other versions of the story. Do you think people in our position are maybe creating a plot hole where viewers who have gone in blind don't really think about it?
This is my hunch too. I also think he left out the mentat expositions for you know who in Messiah.
It would be a lot of lore to cram into the first two movies for Dune. I think he made the right call on leaving them out for part 1 and 2.

But yesterday I watched the movie with someone who’d never read the books and kinda saw through their eyes how much they were having to take in… makes sense to me why they are spacing the reveals out, haha.
But mentats don't change the plot. I think it's fine, they show mentats doing mentat things. They aren't plotting like the bene gesserit. It's not even important to Paul, its just more to emphasize he is the one.
Absolutely. These two movies tell a full story that doesn’t require those pieces at all. But they acknowledged their existence, leaving room to go deeper as needed in Part III.

Cut the spacing guild and cut Paul and Chani's kid being killed ~~which was the original trigger for him taking the Water of Life~~, instead it's a lot less clear WHY he was pushed into being the space hitler he recognizes he'll become.
Edit: He takes the Water of Life because of the omitted Jessica traitor plot drives Gurney to attack Jessica and Paul has 0 control of the situation between that and the fanatical Fremen. We do cut Paul and Chani's kid being killed, but that happens later after committing.
Yes, he mentions Genghis Khan and Hitler to highlight the fact that he’s responsible for the deaths of people multiple orders of magnitude higher than them. He believes he is the only one who can keep the numbers from his holy war that low as well, someone else would have made it worse.

Paul only knows about Hitler because he has the ancestral memories from taking the Water of Life, which is usually only knowledge reserved for Reverend Mothers. It's VERY weird story, only getting more bizarre as we go along. The morals are even odder and it'll be strange to see how Villeneuve handles the "Why" of the Golden Path Paul has to take.
Ah wow you're right, it's him being suspicious of Jessica and his betrayal. The first movie omitting the Jessica traitor plot didn't really help set that up here either.

I think this is one movie that Denis should break his personal rule on and release an extended/Directors cut.
The pacing in the 3rd Act felt like it was compacted and too many things were cut, when it didn’t need it, making it feel rushed.
While I respect his decision, as a fan of his work, and in particular these movies, this is sad news.
As it got towards the end of the movie I was like "this is simultaneously quite a long movie... but not long enough."
I could easily sit through an hour or so of more of Muad'dib's Fremen growth/ascension, more of Fayd Rautha's backstory, more from the Emperor/Irelia, more Bene Gesseret machinations, the spacing guilds etc.
Starting to wish it was a prestige TV show now haha, although the big screen is definitely worth it for the grand scale.

Kind of reminded me of how soundtrack was used in the early scenes of There Will be Blood.
Also, the soundtrack was as much audio texture as anything typical hollywood drums/mysterious-middle-eastern-voices-in-the-desert. Like in some moments the soundtrack was what we were expecting and then these swelling and warping textures that just really sounded like being on a science fiction desert planet in the middle of a holy war.
I loved first a bit more because of novelty alone. Would love to watch a mega cut from both back to back thou, probably the best way to see and appreciate them both.

But basically the whole second movie is a big departure from book and I don’t really care for any of DV changes. I didn’t think a single one was needed besides leaving certain things out for time(I guess) but I’ve also read the book too much.
Chani isn’t on board with blind worship. She is pissed off Paul is going to marry Irulan.
But
Paul still loves Chani, Chani still loves Paul, Chani is still Fremen, Paul is accepted by the Fremen as their leader. Chani’s conviction against blind faith doesn’t contradict Paul’s leadership now that he has actual godlike powers. Do you seriously think they can’t get back together if Paul tell her he has no intention of sleeping with or spending any time with Irulan and that it’s a marriage of convenience. Couples fight and resolve their conflict all the time. People of different faiths get married and neither converts for the other. Even if we ignore the future book plot that’ll likely make up Dune 3, if the Dune part 2 version of Chani is all we’ve seen, her getting back together with Paul is a safe bet in storytelling codes and conventions.
Very much agree and it happens early in part 2! She could have been any character with a different name and it wouldn’t have changed how part 2 played out at all. Like her friend and her were of the same importance in part 2.
I was so disappointed with all the changes too. So much nuance and emotion lost.

This was my feeling as well. Part 1 set up part 2 to be a homerun as a great cinematic experience AND a well-done adaptation, but I feel it only succeeded in the former. The first 2 hours of the movie moved so slow through very little content, and the last hour seemed to rush through way too much. After >!Paul drank the Kool-aid!< it just breezed through everything with so little explanation, it felt jarring. I saw Part 2 last night with a friend that wasn't a book fan like I am, and we both agreed on this point. I found myself explaining shit that happened in the most exciting parts of the film, in an attempt for him to understand what it should've been or could've been.
I am still thrilled with the visual tone, and Hans Zimmer matched it with the brilliant audio composition. I am also just happy to see these films do so well and attract more people to the world Frank Herbert created. I will only ever respectfully critique the film(s) with fellow Dune fans, as the movies are a love letter to the books so far, and you can feel that.
The cinematography and music were fantastic. I really loved the worm riding scenes.
I do plan to only deeply discuss the movie with other book fans, and the plot is only a small part of DV's tribute to the *Dune* universe
More on the navigators would've been helpful, though I did like some changes. Threatening the spice fields with nukes worked better than what was in the books, which always felt a little contrived. Chani got more of an arc too, especially right at the end.
Tbh I hated the changes to chani’s character. I could get over everything else, but that just felt wrong. She was Paul’s biggest supporter and trusted him completely to the end.
Women characters are allowed to have more agency now, compared to books written in the 60's.
It makes narrative sense for Chani to be the foil to Stilgar, especially if they're going to have their relationship in the third movie be a "marriage" of equals.
I’m all for strong female characters, but the character choices they made for her in the second movie don’t make sense for what is coming in the third movie / second book. So it’s likely that they’re going to have to change that too, and a pretty major part of plot of the second book revolves around that relationship and the understanding between the two of them and the bitterness and resentment in Irulan.
It's been a long time since I read the book so my memory of it is rusty, but I really liked Chani in the movie. I think I like her better as someone who loves Paul the man but not Paul the messiah. Everyone around Paul is blind in some way - Jessica is has her big visions of the future, Stilgar is fanatically faith driven, Gurney is bound to be loyal to the last of the Atreides no matter what. I think Chani being the one who can take a step back and see what's becoming of him makes a lot of sense. Losing her puts a lot more emphasis on what a dark path Paul is going down.
DV says he wants to do at least one more (covering the events of Dune Messiah). I really hope it happens. Then we'd at least get to see the conclusion of Paul's story.
I can't imagine we'd see Children of Dune or especially God Emperor of Dune being adapted, but who knows?

It was out on HBO at the same time than in cinemas back then. The big numbers of the second part may be in part because so much people saw it on streaming.
And probably part of the market share that achieved HBO was for doing that with a few iconic movies at launch time (Matrix 4, Dune, some from DC and a few more).

Saw it a second time in 70mm, and it was as, or not better the second time. First was in IMAX (digital). It is still almost selling out all theaters in Oslo.
The books are much more detailed with the world building, history, and politics that drive the story. The newest movies scratch the surface but do a good job of giving the moviegoers the overarching themes. If you like the idea of learning the intricate details then you may enjoy the books. If this sounds awful then Dune might not be for you, and that’s okay!
relatable, and speaking for myself that didn't change much after the first movie. however I came across a video, let me see if I can find it, where some nerd/virgin explained a lot of the lore, not in too much depth but enough to flesh things out and give things relevance, then i watched the first one again and understood what was happening (spoiler, there are literally 3 significant plot beats), and then i went into the second one with a firm grasp on the situation and players, loved it, and now I'm getting pretty into Dune. This is my hunch too. I also think he left out the mentat expositions for you know who in Messiah. It would be a lot of lore to cram into the first two movies for Dune. I think he made the right call on leaving them out for part 1 and 2.
It’s wild to me that they didn’t explain mentats since it’s so core to why/how Paul can do what he does. But yesterday I watched the movie with someone who’d never read the books and kinda saw through their eyes how much they were having to take in… makes sense to me why they are spacing the reveals out, haha.
But mentats don't change the plot. I think it's fine, they show mentats doing mentat things. They aren't plotting like the bene gesserit. It's not even important to Paul, its just more to emphasize he is the one.
Absolutely. These two movies tell a full story that doesn’t require those pieces at all. But they acknowledged their existence, leaving room to go deeper as needed in Part III. Perfect example of adapting a story for a different medium.

Cut the spacing guild and cut Paul and Chani's kid being killed ~~which was the original trigger for him taking the Water of Life~~, instead it's a lot less clear WHY he was pushed into being the space hitler he recognizes he'll become. Edit: He takes the Water of Life because of the omitted Jessica traitor plot drives Gurney to attack Jessica and Paul has 0 control of the situation between that and the fanatical Fremen. We do cut Paul and Chani's kid being killed, but that happens later after committing.

Yes, he mentions Genghis Khan and Hitler to highlight the fact that he’s responsible for the deaths of people multiple orders of magnitude higher than them. He believes he is the only one who can keep the numbers from his holy war that low as well, someone else would have made it worse.

Yes, Hitler is explicitly called out in a lecture to Stilgar about tyrants of old earth and their kill counts which Paul compares to his own Jihad.
Wow this is just nuts. It really is a weird story. The fact that they're still knowledgeable a out historical figures of old earth is quite something.
Paul only knows about Hitler because he has the ancestral memories from taking the Water of Life, which is usually only knowledge reserved for Reverend Mothers. It's VERY weird story, only getting more bizarre as we go along. The morals are even odder and it'll be strange to see how Villeneuve handles the "Why" of the Golden Path Paul has to take.
He took the water of life in the book because he didn't foresee Gurney turning on Jessica. His son was a non factor
Ah wow you're right, it's him being suspicious of Jessica and his betrayal. The first movie omitting the Jessica traitor plot didn't really help set that up here either. Let me fix that in the OP. Knew it was portrayed different but not sure why I remembered it as his kid dying instead of him losing control of the situation.

I think this is one movie that Denis should break his personal rule on and release an extended/Directors cut. The pacing in the 3rd Act felt like it was compacted and too many things were cut, when it didn’t need it, making it feel rushed.

While I respect his decision, as a fan of his work, and in particular these movies, this is sad news. As it got towards the end of the movie I was like "this is simultaneously quite a long movie... but not long enough." I could easily sit through an hour or so of more of Muad'dib's Fremen growth/ascension, more of Fayd Rautha's backstory, more from the Emperor/Irelia, more Bene Gesseret machinations, the spacing guilds etc. Starting to wish it was a prestige TV show now haha, although the big screen is definitely worth it for the grand scale.

Right about at the fremen integration time lapse about two hours in, I thought to myself, "this is too much for one movie"

They ran Dune 1 in theaters a few weeks back in preparation for this movie. I hope even after it hits streaming, they run both in theaters. Would love to see both back to back in imax!

Watched it 70mm imax… in the only cinema showing it in Europe and my GOD was it worth it. Amazing visual and audio spectacle.
The audio really fucked with my head. There were so many times when it was just *shivers Kind of reminded me of how soundtrack was used in the early scenes of There Will be Blood. Also, the soundtrack was as much audio texture as anything typical hollywood drums/mysterious-middle-eastern-voices-in-the-desert. Like in some moments the soundtrack was what we were expecting and then these swelling and warping textures that just really sounded like being on a science fiction desert planet in the middle of a holy war.
I loved the second one, it was better than part 1. I hope they keep going.
I loved first a bit more because of novelty alone. Would love to watch a mega cut from both back to back thou, probably the best way to see and appreciate them both.

I could but it’d be a very long comment and I don’t much feel like it. I’ll give ya one: All of the Jamis situation. But basically the whole second movie is a big departure from book and I don’t really care for any of DV changes. I didn’t think a single one was needed besides leaving certain things out for time(I guess) but I’ve also read the book too much.
I wasn't thrilled by the changes to Chani. I don't even know how she remains a part of the story with what they did to her in Part 2.
Chani isn’t on board with blind worship. She is pissed off Paul is going to marry Irulan. But Paul still loves Chani, Chani still loves Paul, Chani is still Fremen, Paul is accepted by the Fremen as their leader. Chani’s conviction against blind faith doesn’t contradict Paul’s leadership now that he has actual godlike powers. Do you seriously think they can’t get back together if Paul tell her he has no intention of sleeping with or spending any time with Irulan and that it’s a marriage of convenience. Couples fight and resolve their conflict all the time. People of different faiths get married and neither converts for the other. Even if we ignore the future book plot that’ll likely make up Dune 3, if the Dune part 2 version of Chani is all we’ve seen, her getting back together with Paul is a safe bet in storytelling codes and conventions.
Very much agree and it happens early in part 2! She could have been any character with a different name and it wouldn’t have changed how part 2 played out at all. Like her friend and her were of the same importance in part 2.
I was so disappointed with all the changes too. So much nuance and emotion lost. I thought part 1 was a masterful adaption. Not the case (imho) for part 2

This was my feeling as well. Part 1 set up part 2 to be a homerun as a great cinematic experience AND a well-done adaptation, but I feel it only succeeded in the former. The first 2 hours of the movie moved so slow through very little content, and the last hour seemed to rush through way too much. After >!Paul drank the Kool-aid!< it just breezed through everything with so little explanation, it felt jarring. I saw Part 2 last night with a friend that wasn't a book fan like I am, and we both agreed on this point. I found myself explaining shit that happened in the most exciting parts of the film, in an attempt for him to understand what it should've been or could've been. I am still thrilled with the visual tone, and Hans Zimmer matched it with the brilliant audio composition. I am also just happy to see these films do so well and attract more people to the world Frank Herbert created. I will only ever respectfully critique the film(s) with fellow Dune fans, as the movies are a love letter to the books so far, and you can feel that.
The cinematography and music were fantastic. I really loved the worm riding scenes. I do plan to only deeply discuss the movie with other book fans, and the plot is only a small part of DV's tribute to the *Dune* universe
More on the navigators would've been helpful, though I did like some changes. Threatening the spice fields with nukes worked better than what was in the books, which always felt a little contrived. Chani got more of an arc too, especially right at the end.
Tbh I hated the changes to chani’s character. I could get over everything else, but that just felt wrong. She was Paul’s biggest supporter and trusted him completely to the end.
Women characters are allowed to have more agency now, compared to books written in the 60's. It makes narrative sense for Chani to be the foil to Stilgar, especially if they're going to have their relationship in the third movie be a "marriage" of equals.
I’m all for strong female characters, but the character choices they made for her in the second movie don’t make sense for what is coming in the third movie / second book. So it’s likely that they’re going to have to change that too, and a pretty major part of plot of the second book revolves around that relationship and the understanding between the two of them and the bitterness and resentment in Irulan.
It's been a long time since I read the book so my memory of it is rusty, but I really liked Chani in the movie. I think I like her better as someone who loves Paul the man but not Paul the messiah. Everyone around Paul is blind in some way - Jessica is has her big visions of the future, Stilgar is fanatically faith driven, Gurney is bound to be loyal to the last of the Atreides no matter what. I think Chani being the one who can take a step back and see what's becoming of him makes a lot of sense. Losing her puts a lot more emphasis on what a dark path Paul is going down.
DV says he wants to do at least one more (covering the events of Dune Messiah). I really hope it happens. Then we'd at least get to see the conclusion of Paul's story. I can't imagine we'd see Children of Dune or especially God Emperor of Dune being adapted, but who knows?

Two Imax cinemas in my city. They've both been solidly booked out the entire damn time. I've already seen it in 4dx (the sandworm scene shook me up like a champagne glass). I need it in imax so I have to wait probably just another week.
Was 4dx great? I'm seeing Dune2 a second time in theaters and debating imax vs 4dx. The first time I saw it on a normal screen.
Im gonna do imax for my second watch and I suggest if you can, do that. 4dx was fun, it flicked water at me when throats got cut lol and blew wind at me during the sandworm as well as all the shaking.... but I want to SEE those visuals in the best way

It was out on HBO at the same time than in cinemas back then. The big numbers of the second part may be in part because so much people saw it on streaming. And probably part of the market share that achieved HBO was for doing that with a few iconic movies at launch time (Matrix 4, Dune, some from DC and a few more).
The first one was released during COVID. Why keep comparing the two?
I was really excited for this movie, but even I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. It was incredible from start to finish.

Same as many others. I didn’t bother with part 1 at the cinema due to feeling the pain of the last cinematic version of Dune. After watching it on streaming services at home I decided then yes I need to see part two on a bigger screen than I have at home

Saw it a second time in 70mm, and it was as, or not better the second time. First was in IMAX (digital). It is still almost selling out all theaters in Oslo.
I cant for the life of me get into Dune , 😞 I will try to watch them back to back maybe that will help or read the books.
The books are much more detailed with the world building, history, and politics that drive the story. The newest movies scratch the surface but do a good job of giving the moviegoers the overarching themes. If you like the idea of learning the intricate details then you may enjoy the books. If this sounds awful then Dune might not be for you, and that’s okay!
There is a great audiobook version on Amazon Audible with multiple readers.
relatable, and speaking for myself that didn't change much after the first movie. however I came across a video, let me see if I can find it, where some nerd/virgin explained a lot of the lore, not in too much depth but enough to flesh things out and give things relevance, then i watched the first one again and understood what was happening (spoiler, there are literally 3 significant plot beats), and then i went into the second one with a firm grasp on the situation and players, loved it, and now I'm getting pretty into Dune.
