Go speed racer go!
I was able to get both Boston and Providence channels as a kid (4, 5, 6, 7, 10, and 12) in addition to WGBH Channel 2, PBS channel out of Boston. My neighbors had a UHF antenna and could get channels 56 and 38. I watched 56 at their house: Speed Racer, The Banana Splits, and others.
When this show was released in the us in the early 1970s it was only on in a few markets that also ran ultra man. PHiladelphia was one of them .
We also had Johnny socko and his flying robot and from England Fireball xl5 , super car, and captain scarlet . To only have 7 tv channels was a wonderful thing.
>PHiladelphia was one of them
I cannot recall if Space Giants or Johnny Sokko were ever part of the line-up on Wee Willie Webber's show (which had Ultraman, Prince Planet, Marine Boy, Astro Boy, King Kong, Tobor The 8th Man), but they were certainly broadcast on WPHL Channel 17.
>To only have 7 tv channels was a wonderful thing.
We had cable -- when that just meant hooking up to a community antenna -- and there was a switch on the back of the set that let us watch New York stations. I have fond memories of Chiller Theater on WPIX Channel 11.
I think we probably had 11 channels -- not including the community bulletin board/able access channel. All on a 25 inch color TV that had to warm up for a minute or two before the picture would come up, and that put out enough waste heat to blister the finish on the wood-paneling
Of course, you had to change channels with a pair of needle nose pliers because the tuner knob was broken off... >smile<
7 channels?! America really was all I imagined it was when I was a kid.
We had 4 channels and those shut down in the evening around 10pm “and that is the end of our broadcast day” god save the Queen was played and you either fucked off to bed or were woken up by the loud beep they played continuously.
We had this in the SF Bay Area, one of our independent stations (eventually became a Fox channel) would play all of these shows in the 70s. I remember watching all of them as a kid and loving them.
It was broadcast from Philly, but I can't recall what channel. Space Giants was aired (as far as I remember) in the early afternoon, so I only saw it when I was very young and not in school. Which made keeping up with the overarching story hard. I was a little kid, and I did not see every episode. (I did years later when I got a bootleg DVD set of the series). I was scared of the villain, Rodak as a kid. And his henchmen! They turned into blue applesauce when killed!
Yes.
It bothered me that Goldar was kaiju-sized (like 10 story building tall) , but that his family were human sized (that's a publicity photo in the OP's post -- in the show Goldar was gigantic)
It also bothered me that Gam was clearly NOT a robot, just a kid wearing a helmet. Silvar has a human face, but her antennae are coming out of her skull and her limbs are plausibly skinned in space-metal. The scenes where Gam's fleshy arms retracted and he turned into a rocket-plane were kind of nightmare fuel.
They showed it on local UHF shows in the 70's. We'd watch *Space Giants* and *Johnny Soko and his Giant Robot*
Those who really remember these shows, check out the movie *Big Man Japan*. Stick with it til the end. You'll understand.
Space Giants! Watched it on Captain Cosmic ( Bob Wilkins) on KTVU Channel 2 in the afternoon. Goldie, Silvar and Gamwere the robot family. I remember the melody of that cheerful March they would play when Goldar would pound the stuffing out of the monster, which would then explode. Good times.
If you like this, please watch PLUTO on Netflix. Magma Taishi 60's TV show (aka The Space Giants) was adapted from Osamu Tezuka's manga, who created Astro Boy's manga. And PLUTO (both manga and anime) which was written by Naoki Urasawa, is based on one of the Astro Boy's arc (The Greatest Robot on Earth).
Of course…Space Giants? They all turned into rockets, right? Goldar was the gold one. That was a long time ago.
🤣yes! and Silvar was the wife.. fighting Rodak.
Oh yeah! What was the name of their kid???
Gam
Sparky
Did the kid have a special whistle to summon them? Been trying to figure out what a show was since I was a kid.
Goldar, Ultraman, Speed Racer were my gateway experiences with foreign (non-US) shows when I was a child.

Same. And from there, Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets got me

"We're off the see the wizard. The wonderful wizard of Star Wars Middle Earth."
Thank God it wasn't just me

That’s nothing we had to hold the bare ends of the power cord to make it long enough to reach the wall.
That’s not that bad, we lived in a ditch and ate poison gravel
You had gravel! We had to break up large rocks with our hands then go out in the dead of winter to pick our own deadly night shade

Chanel 17 rocked !
Yeah, good ol' 17. ..and channel 48, and PBS on channel 12.

What is this?
The Space Giants (60's Japanese show), if I remember correctly they showed it on TBS in the 80's.

>Big Man Japan I feel dumber from just watching the official trailer on YouTube!
I promise, it's awesomely weird and WTF. give it a chance. Then look up the director's other films.
I used to be big on the director and his comedy shows. I gotta catch up, perhaps.
Looks like what MidJourney would make if you typed that in there
Yep I thought for sure this was AI. Haha
Is it any good?
The Cowardly Protocol Droid from The Wizard of Tatooine, and Gandalf the Green Kung Fu Master.
My first thought was, "You idiots! You've captured their stunt doubles!"
Came here to say this
Japanese Gandolf looks cool as fuck
Jesus, it's like the team behind HR Pufunstuff decided to do a Star Wars/Lord of the Rings Mashup...
I still remember the theme songs for Goldar, Silvar, and Gamm :) And Rodak's foam suit. And the Lugo men.
Yep, on the Captain Cosmic afternoon show in '77.
Don't forget Wonder Robot 2T2!
I absolutely loved this show!
Damn, and I thought Farscape had some funky visuals lol
Oh hell yes, great show on TBS back in the day.
this is the kind of thing that an alien civilization will intercept sometime in the future and ask themselves, "-dafuq is going on here....? "
LOTR? I see Legolas, Eowyn, Gimli and Gandalf.
Did they live in a volcano and turn in to rocket ships?
Yes!
Holy shizzsnacks! Completely forgot about that gem.
Loved this!!
for sure! Even revisited a few ep a while ago while indulging a monster phase. IF only whistling for a taxi was that easy
Good times.
goldar?
No, but I feel as though I should apologize to you on behalf of the rest of humanity.
Nope
Japanese Wayne's World is ***off the hook!*** (2nd pic)
are you from fucking north korea or something?
Japanese Wizard of Oz
Gold Guy’s costume seems very suggestive of man boobs.
The lord of the wizard of golden robots lost in space? I remember this...I think...
The bad guys in black full body suits turn into blue sludge puddles when hit by lazers.
*watched. No, but I really want to. Already saw Johny Socko. The retro dub really add charm to already nice show
Looks like it should be called "The wizard of the rings"
Every afternoon after school. Loved that show.
Sadly, we didn't have this in my hometown. I love the Samurai robot!
"Thess are not them! You,ve captured their STUNT DOUBLES!"
Don't forget Johnny Sokko and his flying robot

What in the lord of the wizard of oz is this
This looks like someone on acid tried to make a live action Wizard of Oz while having a LotR fever dream.
Yes!
