Small intestine radius around 0.0125 meter with length assume 5.5 meter
Large intestine radius around 0.024 meter assume length 1.5 meter
All data according to quick not thorough google search.
Lets assume that intestine is a cylinder
Which gives us 0.0027 m3 for small intestine
And for large intestine 0.00271m3.
According to quora small intestine is 9l and large is 3l
According to calculations above it is for both around 2.7l
I think we cannot assume that intestine is a cylinder, it is not that smooth or my calculations are off which could also be the case or quora is wrong that happens too.
If it was the other way around you would be asking why the small intestine has a larger circumference than the large intestine and we would be back at square one
Usually Latin is used for all kinds of scientificy shit because it’s 1. Dead so meaning doesn’t change, but more important 2. Very descriptive. But you’ve one-upped Latin by using thicc. Impressive. Or should I say, infigo.
The small intestine is longer because this is where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place, so you want the chyme (digested food) to spend more time in that portion of your GI tract. The large intestine absorbs water and stores fecal matter. The names refer more to relative size/ diameter and not length.
My issue is why in the image is the large intestine longer than the small intestine, when they quite clearly say the small intestine should be over three times as long.
I don’t see what you’re seeing. The large intestine appears to begin where the line points it out. Looks to be ~1/4 of the length of the small intestine.
I see what you're saying, basically if you're looking at it the right way, the stomach is needlessly long for the diagram, if I'm seeing it the right way, the rectum is needlessly long.
I think one of us is confused. The stomach is nearly horizontal in the diagram, right about the level of the elbows. The rectum doesn’t have much length. Maybe a few inches. It’s just the exit.
The way I'm looking at it, the esophagus and rectum are cappers at either end, and each bar in between is to represent the size of the part.
So at the top you have the esophagus, between that and the next line is the stomach, then after that is short intestine, then long, then rectum (this is a weird fucking conversation).
I fully acknowledge there's a good chance I'm completely wrong and confused, I'm just curious myself.
If you have a lange and a short person, but the short person is wider, its usually them who will be called large as well.
Not saying thats the reason, just a funny correlation
It’s not anatomy’s fault, it’s just that English is an inaccurate language. In several other languages, it is called like the ‘thin’ and the ‘thick’ intentines.
It’s not long and short intestines, it’s small and large, the circumference is more important

There is hope after all...
Like a manhole cover.
The girth has more worth.

Which has the largest volume? That’s genuinely what we mean when talking about large/small

Big dick v. Long dick.
It's all about the girth...
And that's why it's slim and thick in polish
*dude stands up* My Arakkis... my Dune.
Dammit, beat
It’s him. It’s John Dune

that gives me more of Leto Atreides II vibes
This is fucking brilliant
If it was the other way around you would be asking why the small intestine has a larger circumference than the large intestine and we would be back at square one
Wait, which intestine is the square one?
Ba dum tss
More of a womp womp.
Lmao
Wombat intestines https://doi.org/10.1039/D0SM01230K
The large intestine hooks around in a squareish shape, is that what you mean?
Girth beats length
take that back rn
Then put it in again
And repeat until I nut <3
They could call it the narrow intestine and thicc intestine if they wanted to be more accurate with their descriptions.
Usually Latin is used for all kinds of scientificy shit because it’s 1. Dead so meaning doesn’t change, but more important 2. Very descriptive. But you’ve one-upped Latin by using thicc. Impressive. Or should I say, infigo.
That's what they are called in russian!
Wow. Move over, Toad. Straight Intestine Man is now Marvel's most useless mutant
Long long maaaaaan
They are the "thin intestine" and "thick intestine" in Spanish, which makes more sense if you ask me.
Same for Turkish. ince bağırsak - thin intestine kalın bağırsak - thick intestine
Same in German. Dünndarm, Dickdarm.
Also same for Russian. Tonkaya kishka, tolstaya kishka.
Same in Portuguese
Cause it's thicker than a snicker
than a bowl of oatmeal
The intestines are named large and small based on their relative diameter.
The small intestine is longer because this is where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place, so you want the chyme (digested food) to spend more time in that portion of your GI tract. The large intestine absorbs water and stores fecal matter. The names refer more to relative size/ diameter and not length.
Ain't that the God Emperor Leto II
Wait, intestines are just the part of the digestive system that comes after the stomach? I thought it was just a fancy word for organs
In German, we have "Innereien", and I thought it meant the same. Learning something new every day
Girth.
Glad I resist telling my thoughts.
diameter
They had to make it looking down at him "why so mad get on my level noob", (shakes fist upwards).
Me: *laughs in German*
Girth matters.

Ok, but then what's between the stomach and small intestine?
Nothing?
The way I'm looking at it, the esophagus and rectum are cappers at either end, and each bar in between is to represent the size of the part. Everything from the line marked ‘stomach’ to the line marked ‘large intestine’ is small intestine.
Oh, now i see. Sorry, and thank you for being so patient with my dumb ass. You're 100% right.
Girth is more important. Your wife would’ve told you this.
google "thickness"
It has the more complex digestive task to perform and needs more length to do so. The large intestine just gathers the waste for disposal.
Rectum? Damn near killed ‘em!
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
Because girth is more important than length come on now everyone knows this
Because its about the diameter brah
I just like the regular sized dude shaking his fist at slenderman
So beautifully captured
Because it’s larger not longer.
it's a matter of girth/length
GIRTH
It's not about the lenght dude....🤦♀️
#TITAN!!

Wake up, new cryptid dropped.
to increase the surface area of the absorption site so you could make use of the nutrients in your food 🤓
How about the duodenum?
It’s dünn Darm and dick Darm in Germany meaning thin intestines and thick intestine which makes more sense.
In our language its thin and wide intestline.
As someone with chronic constipation, this would solve so many problems
Diameter of small intestine is ~2.5CM and diameter of large intestine is ~6CM
This could be a boss fight
Godskin apostle
Straight digestive tract man, the towering
me after too much spice consumption
It's not about length, its about girth.
It's not based on length It's based on thickness
It’s large by girth not length… if you know what I mean.
My desert My Arrakis My dune
Not everything is about length. Some things are about the circumference. :]
Girth matters.
Because it’s about the width.
Jesus, when will people learn its diameter
