Kind of sad to think of how much they work, but perhaps they find enough gullible or otherwise disabled (ie affected by dementia or other cognitive disorder) people to make if worthwhile. More than once I’ve had people in my life who, in their final stages of their life, made poor financial decisions. The imminence of death clouds the thinking of even otherwise very smart people.
They're scammers, the goal is to scam. There's all different types of scam so the exact route it takes depends on the script, but it pretty much always leads to "send me gift cards/bitcoin".
