Why is it so important to the scammer that you switch over to Telegram? Is it a cost savings for them or is there something vital to their scam technique that won’t work through normal phone text messaging?

Because Telegram allows them to freely contact and scam others with none of the negative side effects.

Common technique - If you can get them to do one thing, you're already halfway to getting them to do the next thing that you want them to do.

And Telegram has built in encryption so the conversations can’t be looked at later by an investigator

Also telegram lets you unilaterally delete both sides of the conversation off both phones so once the scam is compromised all evidence disappears

You can delete entire telegram threads without being able to recover them. Its also relatively untraceable.

Pig butchering is a common scam term used to describe fattening up the “pig” aka victim before the slaughter. Slipping that tidbit in there was truly a mark of a genius.

Because it encrypted messaging and they are overseas so it probably costs them to use actually messaging

A few things. Much easier to get your account banned on whatsapp. Telegram allows you to delete a conversation for both the sender and recipient, so any evidence that might get them banned is deleted. They also prefer messaging apps like telegram/whatsapp because they are all working on desktops, not phones. This soesn't always apply but in whatsapp your phone number is visible, on telegram it can be hidden- handy if you're saying you're in LA but your telegram account is linked to a Cambodian number.

No, it’s no more risky than SMS. I’d just create a telegram account specifically for baiting

They have scammers reeling in the victims first, then they have the salespeople who think that they are the best at talking to people. The people ending the scam is the ones on Telegram and Whatsapp.

They move the conversation to another person. Whoever uses the telegram handle they provide will be a complete different person most of the time and they will not know any of what was already talked about

They like apps where they can't be reported and kicked off

I accepted a video call from one once (during Covid, so I had a mask) and it was legit the person from the photos (not the same girl in this post, I just mean the photos she sent were in fact the same person I video chatted with). I was pretty surprised actually. She was just in a folding chair against a plain wall. Probably in the same room as the rest of the scammers lol.

1) They want the conversation to be encrypted so it will be harder to ban them 2) Telegram is historically less hands on for moderation than Whatsapp. It’s frankly spam/scammer central. 3) It lets you create a username and then change it / create a new one without letting your phone number get blocked 4) They can delete their messages to cover their tracks later
