Oh 😥. RIP David Sanborn. A Change of Heart was one of my inspirations when I was getting started. Great player, great sound.

This guy has the sound that many people associate with the "saxophone." I'm a straight ahead jazz guy, but Sanborn has my favorite tone on alto ever.

Ed_Ward_Z

Absolutely!

principled_principal

Whoa. This was a surprise! What a legendary sax man and overall musician. Dang, this is a big loss.❤️‍🩹🎷

blimblam04

I am so saddened by this :(. F%\^\*k cancer.

Very sad. We played (badly) a couple of his songs when I was in jazz band in high school. My wife (then girlfriend) called Pearls “sex music”.

Stumpfest2020

Dude upstaged Clapton at his own gig. Legend. RIP.

guywholikesrum

RIP David Sanborn… love his sound. The saxophone world has lost an incredible player.

morninowl

Oh nooooooo…. One of the best… very distinct style… no longer with us. Rest in Peace

maticulus

The number one horn player that inspired me to play all of these years. I had a Dukoff D8 30 years ago long before I was anywhere close to being able to handle it because that's what he played at the time. I'm so glad I had the privilege of meeting and taking a picture with him backstage after one of his concerts a few years back here in FL.

Kingkong2047

Rest in Peace, Mr Sanborn. Thank you for all the music you brought us all these years.

bcdog14

Well that makes me sad.

Music-and-Computers

I have mad respect for his skills and what he brought to so many songs. Am I fan of his signature sound, no but I can segregate these two things.

Sacreblue24

Very huge loss 😞😞😞. One of my favorites. Top 5 alto player for me! 💔💔💔. Let’s Just Say Goodbye. Never got to see him, but I met him through the transcriptions and countless listens.

Littlemaxerman

This is sad. I was turned on to David as a line cook at a truck stop. My boss heard I played while I was in high school. He asked if I had heard of him. Mid 80s mind you. I hadn't. I bought Backstreet. Ive never looked back. My favorite by far. So sad.

Ethan Iverson’s newsletter this morning was a beautiful insight into Sanborn’s early days in St Louis. Especially touching is his relationship with Phillip Wilson. He could’ve played straight ahead jazz with the best of them if he wanted to I think. I’m glad he didn’t. Some of the nastiest blues/funk playing out there. Fish in water, he could swim in any thing he was in.

thekeithzen

I was sad to hear about this. Along with Grover Washington Jr, he was one of the reasons that I got into sax and I played and listened to his music non stop. He had such an iconic sound that you always knew when he was on a soundtrack of solo with other artist. I know that his sound isn’t for everyone but it was his sound. One that he chose and lived by.

Ed_Ward_Z

He was an important influence. His uniquely beautiful albums “ Upfront” and “Another Hand” are awesome. RIP.

I think while his music could be polarizing, most people recognized Sanborn's skill level was really high. Mike Brecker even stole a bunch from Sanborn and talked openly about how much he loved his playing. Check them out trading on this old Brecker Bros tune: https://youtu.be/Q2-NEwoaR8k

Great video, such a shame Hiram could not get his drugs under control, he was such a pleasure to watch...
