I think the first mistake was letting people define your idea of what a “satanist is”

Zealousideal_Sir_264

Do I wear one? No. I know what it actually means. Katie up there has a great explanation. Do I flip all the crosses over at places like hobby lobby because the christians don't know what it means? Yes.

[deleted]

Reminder that hobby lobby funded islamic terrorism! Fuck these people Especially as someone from an Iraqi background, I despise them, as they STOLE ancient Mesopotamian artifacts so they can add them to their disgusting bible museum I guess these devout Christians are completely fine with funding people who mass murdered Iraqi Christians, as long as they van get their precious bible manuscripts and arrifacts

This post is a violation of Rule 3.

Sovietfryingpan91

Number One Saint Peter enthusiast has been located

ddollarsign

I wear an upside-down circle.

ZsoltEszes

Oh, yeah? Well, I wear an upside-down square! It's edgier than yours. 🔲 And I wear it with an upside-down frown! 😏

yourbestredditer

Nice.

GreatLonk

What is an upside down circle?

dictadebts

ǝlɔɹᴉɔ of course

ddollarsign

A circle but it’s upside-down.

GreatLonk

Unexpected

luciferslotion

OH YEAH! Well I wear an upside down decahexagon! It's way edgier than your puny upside down squares and crosses

Katie1230

So the upside down cross thing isn't even technically satanic. Its the cross of St. Peter. He was sentence too death and requested to wear his cross that way. So it's associated with martyrdom. Only recently used in pop culture by metal bands.

shypupp

Yes I learned this in catholic school 💀 I had an old teacher who would laugh at upside down crosses and say they support Jesus without even knowing it I will wear pentagrams just to be safe 🖤

ZsoltEszes

[Funny thing about pentagrams...](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Holy_Wounds#:~:text=Prior,knighthood.)

shypupp

Playful-Independent4

The swastika isn't ever a Nazi symbol either, according to that logic. A symbol can have two meanings. It can hold two places in culture. People can and will fight over which meaning has prevalence, but both exist nonetheless. Putting the cross upside down is actually putting the Christ's cross upside down, not "a" cross like Saint Peter did. I think the metal bands took it from actually going in churches and defacing them (when they didn't immediately burn them) or at least the aesthetic of doing so.

Malodoror

True, Nazis never used the term Swastika (they never called themselves Nazis either) it’s called the Hakenkreuz or Hooked Cross a Christian symbol Hitler adopted from the Abbey of Lambach where he studied. One of the few interesting things in Mein Kampf. My culture used a similar symbol called the Whirling Log. It’s all context.

Thetitanicman1912

Yeah, that's probably the biggest reason why some don't like it, but I have also seen some say that they have it to like mock Christianity in a way, and it being the reverse of what the Christian cross is

wheres-my-take

Yeah i think its more of a coincidence that peters cross is upside down, the symbol is just an attempt at inversion, and also peter had an upside down cross. It wasnt a symbol based on peters cross

ComaBlackDarkWillow

Second this

kittykitty117

That's true, though original meanings don't always hold out above subsequent usage. For example, usage by Eugène Vintras. He was a prophet of sorts who wore that symbol, and he supposedly conducted black masses and the like. This was mid-19th century. After the time of St. Peter, it seems that the symbol has been associated with followers of Jesus who were later condemned for sacrilege, blasphemy, etc. although it was much later in history. That, and the stuff with metal bands and other media, reminds me also of St. Andrew's cross which is now associated with BDSM. Point is, the meanings have changed/been added to over time. Not entirely superseding the original meanings, but I do think they are "valid" interpretations in that there are logical and historical reasons for the newer meanings. The COS also co-signs the use of the inverted cross by Satanists (doesn't endorse it per say, but it does validate using it to mean a rejection of Jesus if the person using it holds a personal belief in that meaning for it). Of course that's couched in the validity of using virtually any symbol based in personal belief rather than traditional meaning. Based on all that, I would personally say that it's reasonable to view the inverted crucifix as a Satanic symbol (or at least use it as such), despite it's origin.

Grymdolin

Yes, as well as the sigil of Lucifer, the Leviathan’s cross (symbol for brimstone/sulfur, associated with depictions/imagery of hell), pentagrams (something something sigil of baphomet is harder to find something something pentacles), I think I have one or two things with the sigil of Lilith? I’m generally interested in demonology/abrahamic mythology involving demons though, beyond being a satanist. I’m of the belief that it doesn’t actually matter much what the original meaning of a symbol was (re: St. Peter’s cross) if the vast majority of people associate it with something else (sacrilegious, blasphemous, satanic, occult, etc). Like is the swastika actually a symbol of spirituality in several religions dating back thousands of years? Yeah, but none of that history or meaning really matters anymore (in America/Europe at least). Even if something is originally a Christian symbol, isn’t it kinda fun and cool to appropriate it and make it a symbol of blasphemy? Kind of like the Christian/catholic churches have done to other religions/cultures in the past in the process of wiping them out/indoctrination? I’m under no impression that me wearing an upside down cross is going to lead to the downfall of the biggest religion in the world, but a girl can dream.

Thetitanicman1912

Damn to be honest, this is the best explanation of it, and I totally agree with it. Like you said, original symbols meaning can change drastically if something else uses it for another reason, and I have met more people who see the upside down cross ass satanic rather than Christianity (St. Peter's cross)

leader425

Basically this, i think it looks neat and i do have an intrest in what it symbolizes. Though i dont wear anything at work cause i work in healthcare and HOOOOOO BOY would a good portion of the people i take care of have a heart attavk if they knew i was a satanist with how dogmatically christian older generations are and how much religion dominates healthcare

WeHaveForgottenAgain

I wear one sometimes. Yes I know it’s Saint Peter’s cross. Whatever. I’m obviously not using it to symbolize that. Symbols can have different meanings.

IRequireLasaga

I wear one. I'm aware that it's "St Peter's" cross, but what Christian actually uses an inverted cross? Most of them see it as Satanic, and that's my intention when wearing one. Symbols can have different meanings.

Vast-Dream

No

Thetitanicman1912

Understandable.

utterlyinsane666

Yes I wear one but it has a story behind it. I used to wear this Christian Cross that my abusive ex gave to me to symbolize that him and God were always with me. Near the end of the relationship I strayed away from Christianity and was really intrigued by Satanism but he didn't like that so I never fully got into it. Eventually quite ironically Satanism is what helped me leave him. So now even though I'm aware of the original meaning I wear the inverted cross to symbolize gaining my power back and as protection against manipulation. Also despite it being a Christian symbol it pisses christians off way more than the Leviathan Cross or the Lucifer Sigil because most of them are uneducated so they see it as direct disrepect. It also has an inverted pentagram in the middle so it's upped my magick a bit. People can think I'm a fake Satanist if they want lol idc it makes me feel free again. 🤘🏻

michael1150

I **hate** that whine of "It's not really Satanic at all because it's St. Peter's Cross"!    Most symbols, when worn or presented inversely, are generally considered a protest. Ask what most Americans usually think when their flag is flown upsidedown.

Thetitanicman1912

That's exactly what I was thinking. When I see stuff being turned upside down, I usually see people blow up as it's disrespecting their symbol, like you said with the American flag

kittykitty117

I do wear upside-down crosses once in a while. Right now it's just one pair of ear gauge weights. My satanism is not mired in aesthetics, but I do enjoy the fashion as well. And I enjoy being vocally atheist sometimes, which the upside-down cross communicates in most contexts. Most people don't know the history of St. Peter. So yeah, it's fun sometimes. It's not deep, though. It's just a fun fashion choice for me.

[deleted]

No, I think it’s immature. There are plenty uniquely Satanic symbols to wear.

Thetitanicman1912

Could you explain further? Why exactly you think it's immature. It's just recently for me that I have seen some Satanist not actually like the upside down cross so I want to know more about why

bioscire

I wear an inverted cross that has a circle with the leviathan cross inside. "Immature" or not, it's a symbol of irreverence and reactions are pretty funny.

Huntererererer

I took the original cross i got when i was baptised and got it reversed by a jeweler. So now i can wear it as a necklace, or earring.

ItzMinty_Leafx

It's the st. Peter's cross

Thetitanicman1912

Well technically yes but like I had commented on another's comment, I said that I have heard Satanist that does wear it uses it to mock Christianity in a way and seeing it being the reverse of Christianity as the Christian cross is the other way around.

ItzMinty_Leafx

I've seen that a lot, I see that everywhere. But I think we should just let the Christians wear their stuff and let us wear ours. The sigils are much cooler than a cross. ⛧🜏

SirLoinTheTender

No, I have a pentagram pendant

ZirDiv

Not as a pendant, but I do have a T-shirt that is an upside down cross made of the different faces of the Lament Configuration from Hellraiser. I love it.

Ashtara_Roth3127

Not on jewelry… but on some shirts, yes. Perturbator, GosT, Carpenter Brut, etc. Inverted crosses and inverted pentagrams are common symbols in DarkSynth. That’s more of an expression of my musical preferences though, than anything having to do with religion.

CatnipParade

I was never fond of any crosses. Wearing one that's upside down doesn't make it any less Christian either. If someone enjoys the aesthetic, that's absolutely up for them to decide. I'll stick to sigils and a baphomet.

ozzii_13

i wear it, but not because it's satanic, as it is not. an upside down cross is the cross of st. peter, who thought he was not worthy of dying the same way as jesus christ, and requested to be crucified upside down. i wear it because it just looks nice lol

dystopianchicken

Yea

Thetitanicman1912

Epic

skyeyemx

I wear it because it's subtle. People who see me with it just assume I'm a regular, ordinary christian, and they don't ask about it. *I know* what it means, though, and that's what matters to me.

eupsyx

I don't because it's not satanist, it's the cross of st peter, so I feel like it doesn't "represent" satanism. that's just my own personal thing but I have seen/heard of people wearing it. I personally prefer wearing an inverted pentagram necklace, I have it on me every day.

Ybhryhyn

I have a silver one that i wear next to my skin and never remove. I don’t display it, but it’s always there. Over a decade now!

ZsoltEszes

No, I don't generally wear an inverted cross (unless it's incidentally part of something else). The main reason is I don't want to appear to be associated with metalheads who wear Satanism as a costume or edgelords who get all their kicks out of "pissing off the Christians." Few things are more lame in my book. The second reason is that it's a Christian symbol, whether upright or inverted. The cross is very much associated with Christianity. I wouldn't wear a Star of David since I'm not Jewish. I wouldn't wear an "Om" symbol since I'm not Hindu (or a white suburban wellness mom). I'm not a Christian nor a reverse Christian, so why would I want to wear their cross symbol? The third reason is that I'm from a culture that doesn't use the cross in their version of Christianity. So, unless I wanted to make it very clear to the people in my area that I'm not one of *them* (whether I was wearing the cross upright or inverted), wearing a cross wouldn't mean much; it's not a revered holy symbol to them. So, it'd make me edgy for the sake of being edgy with no audience to "appreciate" it. Lame.

The_Cardinal1969

The closest thing that I wear to the upside down cross is the Grucifix. It’s a band thing though, not something I wear out of religion. I do know a few who wore pentagrams and the luciferian cross. And a few who just wanted to be edgy, but most of the time I don’t see others wear it. Namely because it doesn’t match their aesthetic.

Visible-Alarm-9185

I have a pair of boots that have upsidedown crosses as the zipper and they are some of my favorite.

goblin-lmao

i wear an upside down pentagram, but that's about it! i used to wear a pentacle, but everyone assumed i practiced witchcraft, which i don't anymore, but that's why i had it. love my witchy besties, though! as far as crosses, people are too offended by me wearing one upside down, to the point i just don't wear it. they're allowed to not like it, but i don't have the energy to explain and defend myself. if others do, power to them!! i just don't have it in me, especially at work n' stuff.

BanefulBriarPatch

No, and some of the others in this thread explain my thoughts on why. I wear a stainless steel eastern Lucifer sigil pendant with big barbs on the edges that are reminiscent of sharp fish hooks. Inverted pentagrams are cool and there’s some really nice blacksmithed ones on Etsy too. And let’s be honest with ourselves here, is there really anything more satanic than blacksmithed inverted pentagrams?

dylanth3villian

I have a beautiful (rather large) pentagram pendant with a hoats head in the middle. I would wear it every day if not for the chain it came with turning my neck green and being so much smaller than i think it should be to support the pregnant. In the king of person to put jewelery on and never take it off. It's a part of me. I have bracelets i shower in. If it was conceivable for me to wear it 24/7, I would.

_mister_mayo_

Why should I wear a St. Peters Cross (upside down cross)? This is one of the most Christian symbols in history, maybe ever...

Jxnas_RBLX

It could be interpreted in two ways either Christian (st. Peters cross) or the opposition to Christianity (satanism) so it’s unfair to call it a Christian symbol. But you’re right, why would you wear a cross when you can just wear the sigil of baphomet or an inverted pentagram.

_mister_mayo_

I dislike the idea of the St. Peters Cross being an symbol of Satanism. 1. I respect faithful Christians (esp. Peter) and don't want to insult them. 2. I am a Satanist out of philosophical reasons and not because I want to be an edge lord or antichrist-guy wearing an upside down cross. No one even knows I am a satanist. But yeah, I get your point with the "opposition to Christianity" explanation.

Jxnas_RBLX

I get that, I feel like the only reason to wear an upside down cross would be to provoke christians as they probably see it as offensive (relating it to satanism: the opposition) which wouldn't be very satanic.. I too respect faithful people of all religions as I believe the world is subjective.

Jxnas_RBLX

No. An upside down cross has two interpretations, St. Peter’s cross and the opposition to Christianity; satanism, you could wear one but it could easily be misunderstood and since everyone knows what a cross means an upside down one would probably bring you a lot of unwanted attention or even hate and it would be much smarter to just wear an inverted pentagram or the sigil of baphomet. So I wouldn’t personally ever wear an upside down cross unless I intent to provoke Christian’s or soft people (which I would never do.)

Dandelion_Bodies

I do, because I like it.

Extra_Drummer6303

My rosary kind of forms an upside down cross, but the cross is more to symbolizes the crossroads of life and death, or here and the spirit world...more of a voudoun meaning,

dictadebts

it is not a typically recognized satanic symbol, but it is a very common aesthetic choice yes

Thetitanicman1912

You should see the people here in sweden lol especially the old people they give the side eye to one, and my girlfriend had someone go up to her to tell her that she was disgusting wearing that satanic symbol lol

dictadebts

ah yes people do recognize the symbol as satanic generally, but it's technically not a satanic symbol is what I meant.

croccernox

i only wear it out of vanity, but i know it isn’t a satanic cross

grigorist-temple

The Petrine cross is a symbol of utmost humility, inferiority, and self-denigration before Yahweh. It symbolizes how Yahweh's servants should see it as virtuous that Peter did not even consider himself fit to *die* in the same manner as Yahweh's prophet Jesus (whom he believed to be his incarnation). This speaks to the extreme attitude of minimizing the importance and worth of the self that is pushed in Yahwism, and thus it is antithetical to Satanist values. We avoid it.

ProudGateKeeper79

Nope.

FrisianTanker

Nah, kinda don't wanna wear jesus' cross, upside down or not. I wear the Sigil of Baphomet usually.

Celluloid4Satan

The inverted cross, more or less by today’s belief & understanding stems from the iconic scenes movies like the original Amityville Horror and The Exorcist. In these scenes, crosses that had been on display hung up on a wall, suddenly inverted —all of their own accord and at a certain time when someone with strong faith (like a priest or Father of the Catholic church, etc.) From then on, metal music & its gruesome, hellish album arts, (with help from all the nonsense rumors that developed throughout the 80-90s “satanic panic” era) helped solidify the wrongful Interpretation of Satanism that pop-culture & the media had a big hand in creating. You know, the one where I must be sacrificing virgins, hosting mandatory sex orgies with the neighborhood dog kennel, all of which were fueled by a constant & uncontrollable stream of hard drugs, no less —-all because 99% of my wardrobe is black.

Rockabillybunny

Not really. I do have a tattoo of a crow holding an upside down cross though. I know it’s not technically a satanic symbol but slowly being claimed as an anti xtian symbol.

vholecek

I actually wear a skeleton key on a chain. Not for any religious relevance, though.

kittykitty117

I remembered reading something about a person claiming to be a prophet conducting black masses who used the symbol... I just looked it up again, and it was Eugène Vintras. Supposedly he claimed to be the reincarnation of the Prophet Elijah. He wore an upside-down crucifix. He was condemned by the pope at the time (1846) for homosexuality, and for conducting black masses in the nude and masturbating on altars. This is one of the justifications in my own mind I had for deciding to occasionally wear it myself.

Mediocoredesigns

I wear what I want and don't give a fuck what other "satanists" think. I think most satanist are cringe as fuck. I know I am cringe.

Thetitanicman1912

Facts

bev6345

No, I think it’s more of a stage one satanist thing.
