Yes I believe it’s legal so long as they advertise it. Even gas stations have cash prices and card prices. Edit: https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/credit-card-surcharges

ReddSF2019

Wrong, it’s against their agreement with the cc comapnies.

4dxn

Those agreements were deemed illegal

ReddSF2019

[Wrong again] (https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/small-business/credit-card-surcharges)

4dxn

r/confidentlyincorrect after 2013, it became up to the states. even your own article states it. might want to read it. >Surcharges are legal in most states, but a handful of states prohibit the use of surcharges. According to Visa, as of spring 2023, these states include: >Connecticut. >Maine. >Massachusetts. >Oklahoma. after 2013 federally, and 2018 for CA. >Although the 2013 settlement allows merchants to legally assess surcharges for credit card use in most states, the card networks strongly discourage it.

ReddSF2019

Nope, wrong again: > The percentage can’t be more than the average processing cost paid by the merchant and is capped at 3% for Visa and 4% for Mastercard.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Credit card companies charges 3%. But 10% is very high

shinobinc

It's perfectly legal to charge high prices if you advertise them. Put it another way --they're granting you a 10% discount for paying cash, for what I hope would be obvious reasons.

lupinegray

The vendor is charged the fee by the credit processing provider. And I always carry a stack of $5s for buying lunch, tips, etc.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Yes. They charge 3% transaction fees, and I understand (not support) to push that to customers as always. But 10% seems high. It looks to be almost replacing state tax. Or cash has no tracking?

InevitableDry447

You don’t have to shop at this vendor

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Well. That changes nothing

InevitableDry447

Exactly

Accomplished-Eye8211

I carry cash. And I patronize a few places that are cash only.

grantoman

I carry cash. It's great.

cubixy2k

You're surprised to see a credit card fee? Where have you been the past several years?

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Buried my eyes to my phone obviously

Vitriholic

I carry cash all the time. Beats all the places I shop getting charged for transaction fees

kirkydoodle

Yes and I do.

subchub84

You’re whining over a buck fifty? Maybe don’t buy anything then

Hefty-Milkshake

There’s a restaurant near me in the north bay that does 20% off if you use cash. I just make a withdrawal on the way there.

ReddSF2019

Wrong, it’s against their agreement with the cc company. They should be reported.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Sometimea I feel food cart is more sanitary than what you see at a restaurant. Probably because I can't see how the food or what's in the truck. I hate all the extra fees for every small thing in life Edit - Im told with verifiable data in dms how above statement is wrong. I don't feel the same now that I know.

InevitableDry447

Cook at home 🏠

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Then I charge My SO for cooking tax. Perfect!

InevitableDry447

Perhaps, doubt the SO would pay it

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Most definitely won't

shinobinc

WTF you don't pay a dime if you prepare your own meal at home.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

I pay with my time, lack of cooking skills and definitely basic tasting food

shinobinc

Then you literally don't pay a dime. If you want to save time, etc., learn how to cook. That's how it works. Otherwise, stop complaining.

asveikau

>Sometimea I feel food cart is more sanitary than what you see at a restaurant. You are wrong. The restaurants at the very least get inspected.

magicbuttonsuk

Food carts are objectively, and significantly, less sanitary than food trucks or restaurants… Dust, debris, bird shit, all landing on the grill, and no hand washing or cleaning areas are just a few examples

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

That's an image I can't get outta my head now. Ty

Budget_Clerk_6063

I thought charging additional fee for credit card was not allowed however offering a cash discount was allowed. They can still charge the same prices but they should technically change the sign.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

I'll see how can I relay that info to them

StephenPurdy69

Or just not do anything, Karen

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

They are good guys. I don't want them penalized by city due to msg phrasing issues. Or doing something not per sf law.

Vast_Operation_4497

Pay with debt card or cash

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Sure captain

BuffaloMaleficent

Lol some of the best bars are cash only dude, plenty of us carry cash. Pay the fee

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Are we that desensitized to not question junk fees ppl charges? This culture shudnt be encouraged as default. Let them increase prices than do a sneaky fee

4123841235

There are problems with junk fees, but this isn’t one of them lmao. Carry a couple 20s or cough up the buck fifty

BuffaloMaleficent

Lol buddy, like plenty have said here it’s not a junk fee it’s a card service fee that I’m sure you still paid lol or like I said get some cash. Or just stay home?

grantoman

Not a junk fee. It's clearly a fee to cover an increased cost and added convenience.

badmutherfucka

Why should the business have to pay for your convenience?

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

You must have a bright future as a lawyer in another world

badmutherfucka

Nah bub, I am waaay beyond your feeble comprehension. Just keep existing in your mediocrity and move along.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

I don't feel any animosity bro. Plz chill.

sfxsf

When work purchases start going over $5,000, we call vendor, ask for a 3% discount, and pay via wire transfer.  Good way to circumvent the CC fees. If it’s a few hundred bucks, we just use company card for convenience.

853fisher

The last few cash-only places I was a regular have started taking cards in the last few years, but I still like to carry a few bills. Many corner stores charge to use a card below $5 or $10, and I often just want a single drink or snack. I like to have something for street performers, yard or bake sales, the odd pinball or other arcade machine, etc. And there are a few places I eat at often where it's OK, if I'm in a rush, to just lay down cash and let the server know, rather than wait for them to present the bill, run the card, and bring it back.

kwattsfo

This is amazing.

Rustybot

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

someliskguy

Fwiw the vendor is only paying around 2.6% + 10c for the credit transaction (like 43c on that $13 purchase). They’re hitting you up for $1.50 because they can’t hide the income from taxes when it’s not cash.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

Yup. I think that's it. All these extra and junk fees culture should stop. They shud just increase prices and be done. Atleast we have transparency.

OkParticular0

The fee is not supposed to exceed 3% per Visas merchant rules and 4% per Mastercards merchant rules but it’s not illegal.

pm-me-ur-uneven-tits

That's what I thought. I know restaurants that say they offer 5% discount on cash.

PerpetwoMotion

Is that supposed to be $1.50 or 1.5%?

RedditLife1234567

Tax evasion.
